I'm a food nut; can't hear enough about food. Even though DLC isn't known for the exotic, there have to be some weirdest food stories out there?

One of the teens in our group was brave enough to order the Escargot one night as an app. I was surprised that even my 17 year old son tried it. Didn't care for it, but at least they tried something new!!!

Yup, the snails were my appetizer that evening also. My son (6 at the time) had his eyes bug out when he saw their "feelers". Hey, it was something I'd never had and with garlic butter sauce....anything tastes good!

I also had the escargot. They were good but it must be an acquired taste. I also tried the maple glazed samon. It was delicious.....

I too tried the escargot and learned to like it. It always frightened me, but eventually one of our servers many cruises ago talked me into giving it a try...he promised to remove it immediately if I hated it! Well, I love garlic, and there's plenty of that, so I can forget the fact that it's snails.
I used to adore the carpaccio (raw beef slices) at Palo, but unfortunately it is no longer offered. My brother and I, as well as my hubby, are voracious raw meat eaters. Last weekend, we went to a restaurant that offers steak tartar. We ordered it, and my sister-in-law watched in horror as a huge plate of totally raw ground steak was plopped in front of us, topped with a raw egg. We mixed in the egg and some onions and plowed right thru it. I was amazed to find someplace that offers it due to the liability...it is so delicious that I would sign a waiver.

Barb (inkkognito) -

I just love your food style!
Let's party together some time! You bring the carpaccio and I'll bring the raw oysters and clams!

Last weekend, we went to a restaurant that offers steak tartar. We ordered it, and my sister-in-law watched in horror as a huge plate of totally raw ground steak was plopped in front of us, topped with a raw egg This is my mother's favorite and anytime she can order is she takes full advantage of the opportunity. Years ago when our whole family went to Denmark, we found this wonderful little restaurant that served a late dinner after the ballet. To my mom's delight, they had steak tartar. My sister and I had to sit at another table as I truely can't watch her eat it, but I'm glad she so enjoyed it. She went back there several times before we left;)

As far as the cruise, our daughter's 18 yr old friend decided she would try the escargot for the first time. What did she order to "wash it down" with? Why a big glass of MILK, of course!!

From the number of people checking out this thread, I'd guess there's some interest in weird food experiences. If DCL is a little tame in this respect, how about cruising in general. Of course, what I'd really like to know as a first timer is "how weird does it get on DCL?"

Escargot and maybe some sushi is about as weird as you'll find. Disney is family-oriented and therefore very mainstream. Palo is fancier, but still nothing too weird...more like the kinds of things you would find at a really good restaurant at WDW.
For all you Chicago area and Northern Indiana people who might want to find the steak tartar, it is at a place in Peotone called Die Bier Stube (people who are familiar with the Frankfort, IL, may remember it in its previous incarnation there, before it burned down). They also serve something like a dozen kinds of weiner schnitzel.

The weirdest thing I ate on board was those bizarre crayfish thingies at the seafood buffet. eeeeeewwww (is that a word?)

...but the escargot gets it for the squishy texture factor.

Sushi and "crayfish thingies" sound promising. For me, coconut shrimp sounds pretty weird, though dylansmom says it's great. I have a hard time with sweet as part of a savory food. I'm still a little dummed about the disappearance of the carpaccio.:(

I'm not sure that you would consider this wierd, but to me it was an adventure. I ordered the duck and goat cheese on flatbread. I had never tried duck before and wanted to try it. It was delicious. Shared with my tablemates and even the 8 and 9 year olds loved it.

My husband had the escargot and enjoyed it.

My kids also ate escargot and really enjoyed it.

This past April - one of our young cruise mates at our table requested calamari to be brought to the table. They told us that it is only available in Palo --- but she said that she can't go to Palo as she is just a tween. She asked to talk to the head server (quite assertive kid she is -- and a very nice and polite girl on top of that). From night two until the end of the cruise we had calamari appetizers (two large plate fulls) at our table every evening shortly after arriving. The head server seen that the calamari was delivered from Palo every eveing when we arrived.
