We went to Ellis Island to celebrate the Koch family's 100th anniversary of their arrival at Ellis island from Hungary. I was on the ferry for these shots and the boat was bobbing up and down more so than I would have liked.

This first one is poignant for what is missing....

..... and here is our favorite gal from the rear. The sun was behind her at this time so this exposure turned out well.

The shots from the front did not come out the way I would have liked despite shooting on manual and bracketing for exposure. She was back lit by the sun and moving at top speed on a bobbing ferry :boat: was just to much of a disadvantage! :scared1:

Beautiful! I'd love to visit her one day.

You did great coping with the backlighting. She even looks good from behind!

Very nice. I like the light on the one from behind. Too bad you couldn't get her to turn around :)

She said she was a little stiff from all that heavy lifting of the tired, the poor and the just plain fortunate! ;)

It's funny how around the fourth of July the Lady Liberty seems just that more beautiful. She is a fitting symbol of our country, she endures through out all times.

When I was photographing her it was tempting to go with the whole body composition but I love that this close up of her shows her strength and her rusty wrinkles, much like the United States itself. I can't help but think looking at her hand that she comes from "hearty peasant stock", much like most of us.

We are fortunate indeed! :thumbsup2

I agree, I like seeing the texture and the detail.

I would LOVED to have seen her in her original copper color. I can only imagine how breathtaking that must have been.

Great job! Nice and sharp! And nice, rich colors, too!

Sounds like you're gonna have to make another trip out there for a "frontal" shot!

Quote "wow nice shots! what camera and lens did you use for this? "

Camera: NIKON D60
Exposure: 0.002 sec (1/500)
Aperture: f/9.0
Focal Length: 200 mm

The lens was Nikon DX AFS Nikkor 55-200mm 1.4-5.6 G ED VR

I was shooting on manual and bracketing for exposures. I had to fight the temptation to trust that the LCD screen was indicating that I had the exposure I wanted. I'm finding that the LCD screen only gives you a ball park indication for exposure.

When you get home and download your pictures you will find that perhaps a subtle shade of color, or shadow or avoiding a blown out high light was 1 exposure away plus or minus.

That's why it always pays to bracket for exposure. I always find some subtle detail that I had completely missed when I was rushing around firing off the camera. For me, sometimes it's those subtle details that can really add to a shot.

Great pictures MM!! I really like the picture taken from behind with the sunlight giving it so much detail .. Print worthy! ... as close as I am and as many times as I have been to NYC I have no pics of the grand lady. :confused3
