View Full Version : Any DVCrs do the cruise?
Wondered about the cruise and how many points it would "cost" for one adult and one child 4 to go in December, staying in a basic stateroom.
Anyone know? Point values say based on double occupancy. What does that mean?

We've been on a 4-day with points and a 7-day using cash. We couldn't come up with enough points to do a 7-day :(. The double occupancy means you have to have 2 full price passengers in each room. So if it's just you and a child, then the child would be paying the second full price rate. The rates then drop for the 3rd & 4th occupant of the room.

Double occupancy means the price is for two persons, minimum of 2-persons in the room. In other words, if a single person wanted a room for themselves alone, they would have to pay as much as if 2-people were in the room.
You and the child would be two people, so effectively you would be using an adult's points for the child.
Right now, there is a special on for selected dates in September, November, and December. Cat. 10 or 11 inside stateroom is 106 points per person. Thus for two of you it would be 212 points.
This is for the 7-day cruise. Check your latest issue of VM, pg 3 for details.
If you had someone else join you, using the 106 points for them, then the child would be 53 points, or a total of 265 points for three persons.
Hope this helps. I don't know what 3 or 4 day cruises would be. You can call Disney to find out.

Thanks for the clarification.
A few more questions:
How did you like the cruise?
How would you compare that experience to a DVC resort experience?
Would you do it again?
Any help is appreciated...

We have been DVC members since 1993 and love it.
We have taken 2 cruises with DCL, 1 on each ship. The ships are amazing. These were the best 2 vacations that we have ever taken. Taking a Disney cruise is a must.

We have taken a 4-day cruise and a 7-day cruise on Disney. They were both beyond our expectations. Right now I am trying to figure out a way to cruise again soon.
One thing to keep in mind when deciding about the cruise. The price (points or cash) cover all food while on board and you non-alcoholic drinks at meal times. In addition, the nightly shows and daily seminars are included.

Just a clarification. If a single person is travelling alone, you do not pay the full 2 person rate. It actually is about 1 3/4, perhaps slightly less. This is true whether you are paying cash or using your points.

We are DVCers and have booked 7 day Magic for Dec 8, 2001. With the Fall Fantasy Special Rates, CAT 5 (deluxe stateroom with veranda) for 2 adults (145 pts ea) and 5 yr old. (53 pts). Total 343
This is a 'savings' of 68 pts from the original point schedule. Originally, we had booked for 411 pts, but those points were restored to our account, plus we are getting a $150 on-board credit.

Thans all for the info. Are there regular discounts like the Fall Fantasy? I'd like to try the cruise, but won't have enough points this year.
Anyone remember when the Fall Fantasy promotion ends?

The Fall Fantasy is not a guaranteed yearly promotion. They did have it last year and now for 2001 also, but for different cruise dates. Note that it is only for the 7 day cruise, not for the 3 or 4 day cruises. I am very tempted myself... :)

SharonS is right in that a single person doesn't pay 2x fares. I was just trying to keep my first answer simple. For a single person they back out the costs of meals, and I believe port charges as they are not actually being used by any second person.
We've taken the 3-day and the 7-day and thoroughly enjoyed them both. However, we paid cash both times, did not use points. Depending on seasons, discounts etc., we've gotten both cruises cheaper than what we consider a point value. For example, for the current 7-day special, if you value a point worth $10.00, then the 106 point cat 10/11 cruise equals $1060/person. If you can get it for cash for less than that, you might consider that route.
On the other hand, if you only have so much time available anyway that you couldn't take a cruise and also have enough time to use all your DVC points separately, then use your points for the cruise. In September a 1-BR at VWL or preferred BWV is 200 points for a 7-day week. By comparison, 212 points for 2-people for a 7-day cruise is a pretty good deal.

We just got back from the 7 day Magic on Saturday. We used points for 7 of the 8 of us. We paid 629 for one kid. It was wonderful! I enjoyed it much better than the 4 day last spring. We used all points for the 8 of us then too.
