Well today I leave for a weekend trip with the girl scouts to hershey park and camping. Tent camping. First time tent camping and with 16- 11 year olds. The only saving grace is that we have 11 adults going. I just hope it doesn't rain. I must be crazy at 33 weeks pregnant going, but I can't disappoint the girls. Here goes nothing. We leave around 1pm. The girls are getting out of school early on their last full day of school.

I'll let you all know how it goes.

Well we had a great time at hershey park. my air mattress deflated the first night and i was quite uncomfortable. We spent the entire day at hershey on Saturday and after dinner we went into chocolate world and after the tour we looked outside and it was lightening and thundering. we hung around for a little while and went back to the camp ground to find the tents got water in them and that they were calling for thunder storms all night. we decided to pack up and head home. We got home about midnight and I got to sleep in my own bed.
The only issue is that I have one parent that feels that we should have stayed and stuck it out. This parent wasn't even there with her daughter and never goes on any of out trips. She text me telling me that is was a rain or shine event. Me and the other leader felt for the girls safety and our sanity we should leave. I was really upset that she would even send me a text and not call me. Her daughter told her it was just rain and we didn't want to get wet. It had nothing to do with just being wet. We felt that the girls would be scared with the thunder and being in a tent around lots of trees. I don't even want to see this parent again. I would love to put her in her place, but being pregnant and hormonal I might not be very nice. I spent the entire day at an amusement park where I couldn't go on any rides in 90 degree heat do her daughter could have a good time. Why do people not understand that it is a volunteer position being a girl scout leader. If they don't like how it is being done then volunteer themselves. I just don't get it.

Sorry about the vent I just needed to get it off my chest. The parent even put a post on facebook about us not being prepared and my husband wouldn't let me respond.

Well safe and sound at home. A little sun burnt but all 16 girls are safe at home with their parents.

Oh dear! First, I'm glad you got home safe and sound. I'm sorry that happened!! I totally agree with you, and I would've wanted my child to come home if it was storming like that (whether I went or not)! You definitely made the right decision!

I hate it for you that some people can't be appreciative of the volunteer time you put in and of the care and thoughtfulness you put forth toward them and their children!! Annnnnnd, to post it on Facebook would annoy me to no end!! Vent away, dear! You've got our support!!! :hug:

Oy! Having been in your shoes last weekend, I know how you feel. We went for one night and it stormed for a FULL HOUR (from 2:30-3:30 am - and the birds started at 4:15). It was horrible.

Morgan and I were planning on leaving early anyhow (so she knew she wouldn't be able to swim), but a number of the girls were not happy that they did not get to go swimming..."we paid for this and it said swimming..." Um, your mother may let you swim in thunder and lightning, but I'm not gonna. And it was $10. It's not like they each paid $100 each and didn't get to go swimming. Some people amaze me.

The other thing is that all we were going to do in the morning is get a "bagged breakfast" and possible swaps and then head home. We had to be out by 11am.

A lot of our parents see girl scouts as cheap childcare. I'm sure what she was upset about was having to take care of her own kid before she was ready. Too bad!

Yes, I know a mom like that - sent her rainbow (5-8) child on an event for 75 years of guiding (or whatever it was) so she could be rid of her and her bigger (Brownie) sister for the whole day - poor child was exhausted and spent most of the afternoon, evening and coach trip home asleep.

And thunder and lightning are not good mixes with tents:rolleyes1 Hello! Sticky-up metal constructions with lightning!!:scared1: When we were at WDW we were cleared out of the pool when lightning threatened, and DS's school sports was called off once just for lightning in the distance (the storm never actually came over, not even a drop of rain:headache:).

What is that mother thinking? Thunder and possible lightening camping do not mix. Don't pay her any mind. She obviously is not thinking for the safety of the children. Thank goodness there was responsible adults there taking care of her child.

It's one thing to sit in a house and listen to a thunderstorm -- something else *entirely* to be out in a tent during one. Camping is a physical activity, and after even one rough night, being faced with another -- while in charge of that many young people! -- is even rougher. I think you made the right call. Phooey on the party pooper.
