Thanks everyone! We're leaving tomorrow night! :cool1: And I'm sick :sad2:. One of my friends has been sick with a virus for the last couple of weeks and I've been telling her to stay away from me. But it looks like I've got it. It seems to be just a cold at the moment - runny/stuffed nose, cough, headache - but my chest is feeling kind of heavy today. I'm thinking about going to the After Hours GP tonight (cause I'll never get in to my dr now) and see if they will give me some antibiotics just in case.

Other then that, we're excited! Last night my 6 year old was talking about footy training next Tuesday and I said "we'll be at Disneyland next Tuesday" and he squealed! Later on he told me that he "nearly fainted" when I said that :rotfl2:

I just went to change some cash at Harvey World and their rate was 76c so I held off. I'll try again at Sydney Airport on Friday. We've got our travel cards all set but I want some cash for day one so I don't have to try to find an ATM asap.

I've always found the fees at the airport pretty high and the fees at a currency exchange to be much higher than a bank. Last time I changed $1000AU to US I think my local Commonwealth only charged a $10 fee, and the exchange rate was better than expected.

Have a wonderful trip :)

Cant wait it has come up so quickly, we have had a few down with my husbands work and with the money situation we will have a bit of a tighter budget now but we will still have a great time. As I saw a quote on the board "You don't have to spend money to have a great trip"

i am going to start packing tomorrow is that too soon.

Hey shaz, just wondering if you have been collecing vouchers (coupons). Last year I took a stack of them that I had printed off online and it really did end up saving quite a bit of money.

This time I have also been printing them out if I find any and already have quite a collection.

Definately worth doing, especially if you are on a budget, I reckon :thumbsup2

Aussiegirls would you mind sharing what types of coupons you are collecting? We are going to Disneyland in September and I have printed some for rainforest cafe which I found on a link on these boards but I am not sure what else I should be looking out for - if you could point me in the right direction that would be great :yay:

We're back!

Got home yesterday and the jetlag hit hard. I'm trying to unpack and do 6 weeks of washing today  but will hopefully get some time to update soon.

Highlights - Disneyland of course  (we were chosen as the family to open DCA one day and made Honorary Citizens of Disneyland!! ), NYC (absolutely amazing), WDW, Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I loved Washington DC and San Francisco, wish we had more time in both places. I am not a fan of Las Vegas, definitely won't rush back there in a hurry.

Will update more soon. Safe travels to everyone leaving soon, you will have an absolute ball!

Oh my goodness, that is SO exciting about being chosen as the family to open DCA and to be honorary citizens of Disneyland :cool1:

I can't wait to read your report, particularly NY (we will be there in 52 days  )

I'm a big coupon collector when we go to the US.

There are websites where you can print up printable coupons. I just go through and find stores and restaurants that we like to shop and eat at and print them up. You can get them for all sorts of things from clothing stores to food, tours, restaurants etc.

A couple I have used in the past are...

http://www.coupondad.net/
http://printable-coupons.blogspot.com/
http://www.wow-coupons.com/printable-retail-coupons.php
www.couponcabin.com

I haven't started looking yet as many have an expiry date, I'll start printing in a few weeks.

If you sign up to some of the outlet shopping centers (prime and premium outlets) you can print up a coupon to get a coupon book when you arrive at the outlet center on the day. Also if there are certain shopping centers you will be going to, have a look on their website as they have different specials sometimes that you can print up a coupon for and get discount coupon books or a free bag etc.

Hi all,

So these are some of the coupons that I have collected so far.

http://www.glscrip.com/download/240910GLSCCouponBook.pdf

http://www.anaheimoc.org/Articles/Archive/Webpage10153.asp

http://www.facebook.com/mimiscafe?v=app_139372682739751

That last one is from Mimi's cafe (awesome restaurant). Also if you go to their website and sign up to get their emails they will email you a voucher for a free breakfast. But only sign up a few days before you go because the vouchers are only valid for about 14 days.

I think if you sign up to get Millies emails they will also send you a voucher for a free meal. I know that if you have a kid that is having a birthday around when you are going and sign them up for the Millie's kids club they will send them a voucher for a free kids meal.

Denny's will also email you a coupon for a free breakfast on your birthday if you are having one whilst you are there.

I also have lots of coupons from Getaway Today. They used to have all their coupons available on their website but apparently too many people were using them (duh, that's what they are for ). So now they have them hidden away somewhere out there in cyberspace and I think they only give the link to people who buy an package from them. You can find them if you do an advanced Google search, but they are quite difficult to find. I can't post a link because it is a PDF, but I do have a copy stored on my computer :rolleyes1. So if anyone wants them just PM me with your email address and I will send them to you. Personally I think these ones are the best of all that I have - lots and lots of discounts

Finally there is Restaurant.com. You can buy gift certificates for very cheap. I bought a $25 gift certificate for House of Blues for $2. If you sign up to get their emails they will send you (almost on a daily basis) promo codes that you can use on their website to get discounts off the prices they have on there. If you wait about a week or so they should come up with an 80% promo code that would allow you to get a $25 gift card for $2. You can pay in USD if you have a travel card or something similar. Just one thing to be wary of, in the fine print, it says that you can't use more than one voucher in one restaurant per month. So no point getting multiples for the same restaurant.

Anyway, that's all that I can think of at the moment. Hope that helps some. If I find (or remember) any others I will definately post. Hope it saves you a few $$$$ guys.

I appreciate the kind thoughts of the Disboarders!!!!!

Yes we leave next Saturday night from Perth via Brisbane to LAX. A short flight to Vegas with 7 nights at the Luxor before a few days with the in laws who live a couple of hours outside of Vegas. A 3 week roadtrip through the National Parks of the West (Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Arches, Canyonlands, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier, North Cascades,Olympia, Mt Rainier, Crater Lake, Lassen Volcanic, Yosemite, Zion and Bryce). Upon arrival back in Vegas we fly to Orlando for 10 days at Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Our family is Me, the bloke at 43, The Boss....she's 40, and the Big Boss...well she's going to celebrate her 3rd birthday with her Grandma. The temperatures are touching an average of 43C in Vegas. The in laws home base touched 47C last weekend, and Orlando is sitting on the low 30'sC with the usual intense humidity. By the time we get there to Orlando on the 28th August, hopefully the temps may be a touch cooler, but the humidity will still be way up there.

But I wouldn't have it any other way. As we all know, the Disney holidays are magic for creating memories for ourselves and our youngsters for the years to come. As DVC members, they are our major overseas destination. We therefore limit our travel outside our US trips to allow us stateside trips every couple of years.

We are indeed fortunate and blessed. Who knows if I get my you know what together I may well try and do a trip report for the 6 weeks.....if people are interested and if I can work out how!!

GrazingGoat1966 - Now I'm really envious!! The only NP in your list that I haven't visited is Grand Tetons. If you haven't done this trip before, you're in for a great time.

There's a zigzag (dirt) road from Mexican Hat near Monument Valley into the Southern Utah National Parks. Not sure if you're planning on taking this road. It's in the middle of nowhere; but a lot of fun!!

But if you're heading into Colorado towards Grand Tetons, and you have time for a detour, try heading towards Mesa Verde....It is worth the detour.

I'd love to see pictures - I only have the film variety and keep meaning to head back....someday!

Look forward to posting some photos!!

Thanks PrincessinOz. We are at 36 sleeps and everyone is so excited. And since I have been pouring over the food trip reports for weeks now, you know I will so be taking food porn pics.

I had to remind myself today to stop and smell the roses on this trip. I was already starting to get all anxious about getting in and out of adr's quickly to get to parks, back to the resort, etc. I need to remember to just go with the flow, we will see much of what we want to and do much of what we want to and if not, hopefully there will be a next time.

I ALWAYS take food porn. Only way I can recall what I ate. And I don't know about anyone else but a significant thing for me anywhere I go on holidays is the food. I just let fly and eat whatever comes in my direction. I can always walk it off. Well that's my excuse.

We are 3 weeks, 4 days and 3 hours from takeoff.

I see the weather forecast is

Orlando - 34C with 52% humidity (Hovering in low to mid 30's with thunderstorms)
Anaheim - 32C with 35% humidity (Hovering between 28-26C for rest fo the week)

Heat like that will be a shock to the system after our weather in Melbourne.

Thanks for the good wishes PrincessInOz - we are off the Disneyland in September too.

Do you think it would be ok to add where people are traveling to (ie DLR or/and WDW) I think most or you are off to WDW.

Dont forget me PrincessInOz. We leave in 30 sleeps.:cheer2:
Ms Shuttergirl, Im like that too. Im over trying to sort out which park and when and fit in with ADRs. What would be an average time to get from a park back to resort then onto another resort/park for ADR, by bus. I know it must vary a bit.

Oz-kateer
08-18-2010, 04:48 AM
Depends on which park and which resort, but allowing for walking through the park, possibly lining up at the restaurant for a bit, waiting for buses and actually travelling - and the time of day (it is "peak hour"?) I'd allow at least an hour and a half.

Also investigate the option of other modes of transport if you can - buses are not always the quickest.

I used taxis sometimes, just to make life easier. Average taxi ride from any point to any point in WDW was $10-$15, and it can shave hours off your travel time.

I think the taxi idea is a good one. We have decided that we will catch a taxi to all of our dinner adr's to save having to catch 2 buses from resort to park to resort. After dinner we will then just catch a bus to the park we wish to go to. If for some reason we are going back to our resort, we will consider a taxi again. If my feet are hurting the money will be well spent :rotfl:

Travel Mum
08-18-2010, 04:08 PM
Are the taxis that operate in WDW all standard size 5-seater cars? As a family-of-five, we cannot fit into one of these as, with the driver we need a 6-seater, so hailing cabs in cities is really tricky.

kyl
08-18-2010, 06:20 PM
Very good question we will have six of us, I wonder if you can order like what we have here called a "maxi taxi"? Anyone know?

Oz-kateer
08-18-2010, 07:04 PM
Yep - maxi taxis are available. LOTS of taxis available around the resorts and around the parks. If there doesn't happen to be a maxi taxi hanging around at the taxi rank, get the hotel concierge to call you one. If yu like the maxi taxi driver (or even the taxi driver) you get, get a card from hima ndthen call on him every time you get a cab.

DON'T FORGET TO TIP! Overall you'll find taxis less $$ than we pay here (well, in Sydney at least) but it's expected you'll tip about 20%, which sort of makes up for the lower fares.

Having said that however, Disney employees and people around Orlando in general are used to Australian tourists and are aware of our tip-less culture, and don't usually get too bent out of shape if you don't tip correctly, or at all.

I thought it was 15% tip for taxis, yikes! I only tipped 15% when we were in the US last time.

I've been boogieing on down to a bit of Taylor Dayne this morning. I am very excited to see her at the F&W Fest. If you see a crazy chick with frizzy blond hair (my hair doesn't "do" humidity well) dancing up the front, you'll know it's me :rotfl2:.

Na na na na na na
Na na na na na na

I have curly hair as well and the Florida Frizzies damn near drive me INSANE.

It sounds very vain but if the excitement over what I'm going to EAT at WDW is anything to judge by, the anxiety about what I am going to do with my hair is right at the other end of the scale.

Before I go this time I'm going to have a Keratin treatment done to see if might help things stay under control.

Otherwise it will be hats, clips, combs and elastics again.

I want at least ONE photo of me in Florida with reasonable hair. We're doing breakfast one morning at MK so I'll see if I can get one shot early in the day, the traditional castle shot.

Standard tipping for a taxi is 15% so you tipped fine :thumbsup2 If they are super helpful, help you with luggage, shopping, stroller etc into the boot then you can up it to 20% but 15% is fine and it's the expected amount from a taxi driver.

I can't believe we are 17 sleep out now!!! The clock has definately slowed down big time, so for each day it feels like two. Never mind I am sure the last week will go really quickly thats what happened last year so lets hope it happens again. So who is off first? Loving the land have you told your children now? What a lovely lovely exciting surprise for them. Far out I wouldn't of been able to contain my excitement and not tell them for this long. You have great will power and I am sure the excitement of finding out so close to going will only add to the magic in there little lives. xx

Kyl it's been so hard but it will be worth it. Dh & I have to keep making sure we delete our text messages. (we text each other at work each morning with the how many sleeps countdown). I'm so paranoid about them finding out now when we've kept a secret this long. There have been so many times when we've nearly let it slip. DS 12 keeps growing out of his shoes rapidly as he's having a major growth spurt and I so wanted to say "in 2 weeks we will get you new basketball shoes in America". Then he found some he loved on sale and wanted to buy them with his own money and we wanted to say "no, save your money and don't get the shoes yet", but we couldn't so we will give him that money and extra money back the day we leave. He will just get some over there in the next size up which will probably fit him next month anyway, hehe. But there have been so many times when it would be so much easier if they knew.
Now we are trying to find a box big enough to put the helium balloon in. It's 69 x 53 cm.

lovintheland
09-01-2010, 08:16 PM
Kyl, have you packed yet? What are you doing to prepare/pass the time? Any good ideas? I have been putting together surprise boxes which has occupied me a little.

kyl
09-01-2010, 09:19 PM
Oh wow surprise boxes do tell.....I ended up buying some new clothes yesterday to take away. I am going to do a full pack this weekend. I have brought bits and pieces over the last couple of weeks now just to put altogether. How long are you going to disneyland for? We are going to do our last few nights in the states there and I just got accomodation at 25% off in the disney hotel. So exciting isn't it!
Well to pass the time, ummmm being on here is a way. I had to laugh last night DD(7) has no underpants left in her draws. I couldn't understand and asked her where on earth have all your nickers gone? Next thing she pulls out a secret bag she had packed for herself. It was so cute. Lots of undies, swimmers and two PJs oh and one jumper. Thats it she said I'm packed mum. What a sweet heart hey. Children can be so funny. Last year when we went to disneyland she again had packed a bag and came to me with it and said is this alright? It was full of her toys and a box of tissues go figure???

Well, at the bottom of the big box at the front door containing the helium balloon with note attached is going to be 3 boxes (1 each). I got really nice gift boxes from Disney store online and I also got a few items of disney clothing each and disney pyjamas and other bits and pieces. a Mickey bead for DD15's pandora bracelet. I also have little disney gift boxes to put inside them which will contain some $US cash. Then I also purchased some Mickey shopping bags from Disney shop which I will do like show bags for the plane with lollies, chips, chocolate, diaries, pens and a magazine each. Kyl, how precious of your daughter. Their excitement is so cute and makes you realize why you do it all. Not like you didn't already know, but you know what I mean? anyway, we have 14 day passes to Disneyland. Not sure how many days out of the 14 we will be there that we'll actually go. Want to play it by ear a bit this time. I also booked the Disneyland hotel for the last 2 nights because it was really cheap. Not sure I will love the idea of changing hotels when the time comes, but at least most the packing will be when it comes time to fly home two days later.
Aussiegirls just think, when we're all home we'll be wishing we were you. But at this point in time I seriously don't think I could contain myself for any longer then 2 weeks.:yay::yay::yay::yay:

kyl
09-01-2010, 11:02 PM
Oh what a clever idea how exciting to see their faces when they open the boxes and the bags for the plane. Great idea! I am going to copy the plane bag idea.....14 Days disneyland. Wow thats so exciting I think I could of done 14 days we did I think 6 Days but stayed 7 nights last year in the GCH. Beautiful hotel, can't afford to do it this time though. But I think the disneyland hotel looks nice as well. You will get to see everything for the 14 days how nice not to feel rushed, you can just stroll and enjoy. Then you can also relax at the pool midday and not feel like you are going to miss out. Very smart I say! O.K so today is nearly over...he he he. Another day down well nearly.

Lovintheland I will just live vicariously through your stories at the moment and then when you come back you can relive it vicarioulsy through mine :lmao:

I love the idea of the plane bags, I might just steal that one too.

One question though lovintheland, when you have ordered from Disney online, have you had to pay billions of $$$ in postage? That has been the one thing that has really put me off buying from there.

Yes Oz-Kateer, the plan is for DH to leave the house for work (cough cough) he will go to his car and get box and place it at front door, knock on the door and then hide at the front of the house with video camera in hand. The boxed will be addressed to them and as always when their aunty sends them gifts in a box I make them all open it together. so DH will capture it all. fingers crossed it will all go to plan.
Aussiegirls when I ordered there was a deal with free shipping which of course didn't apply to Aus. But I ordered some absolute bargains and got a big box delivered only a four working days later for only $36. I was truely amazed and actually wished I'd ordered more. The weird thing was DH had happened to come home before us that day and lucky he did because the box was sitting on our outdoor table when he got home. We are still not sure how it got there as we have two dogs who bark crazily when anyone enters the front of our yard let alone the back. But the box had Disney right across it so lucky the kids didn't see it.

We have 3 sleeps!!!

The kids clothes are all organised (and packed) - what we are taking is all washed but no other packing done.

We are having the house painted (inside) while we are away so we are still really busy packing everything away taking pictures down and cleaning in those corners you (well me....) usually just ignore cause no-one looks there anyway!!

Has turned into a really horrible time this last week with my husband finding out he is to be retrenched in November. So we can't wait to just run away from it all for a while - and what better place to go.

Happy organising everyone - will keep in contact while we are away with some on site reports as we will have the lap top.

Only 10 more sleeps to go! Wow! Where did the past 9 months go? We booked in March, and Jan 8 was SO far away - and now it's right around the corner! I can't sleep, and when I dpo, I end up waking up an hour or 2 later thinking about the trip. I did a trial suitcase pack on Monday, which got me depressed as I can't take anywhere near enough clothes with me, and my tendonitis in my elbow has already flared up from dragging suitcases from room A to room B.

DD8 will be distracted from our trip by her father arriving for a week's visit tonight - she's driving with him up to her Nan and Pop's place and I don't get her back until Jan 6 (giving me no time to track down the things that will undoubtedly get left behind up at Port Maquarie). Me, I do't know what I'm doing during that week! There's only so many times I can re-pack my winter gear LOL. DH and I were going to the Hunter Valley for 3 nights but decided we could use that money better elsewhere, although he did say that I am NOT to take that as go-ahead to spend another $2K shopping in Hawaii :rotfl:

So do you want a run-down of what we are doing and when? If so, I'll let Aust take over from here, as she's the planner of the DL part of my trip!

Hi all. I am back from our trip now, my daughter and I flew in from Honolulu on Saturday night. Aust has updated the trip report I started over in the DL trip report area, if any of you are interested in reading what we got up to. We had a really good time :thumbsup2 We rarely had more than a 5 min wait for a ride, the GCH was AMAZING, and it was wonderful to relax in Hawaii after the week in Anaheim!

We caught up with Chesire and family for dinner one night, and my sister did a tour with Luisa the day my girl and I flew out for Hawaii. So plenty of Disboards interaction :rotfl:
