View Full Version : Photography Board Summer Assignment, 2010: Scavenger Hunt
Pea-n-Me
05-31-2010, 03:47 PM
By popular demand, I've put together a Scavenger Hunt for our next Assignment. The Assignment will span the entire summer, including the months of June, July and August. I am including all of the items at once so that people will have plenty of time to find, shoot and post.
This Assignment is open to everyone, regardless of skill level, type of camera you use, or whether or not you're a Photography Board "regular". The whole purpose of the Assignments are to get out and use your camera, therefore all pictures used in this assignment should be NEW.
Rules for Scavenger Hunt - PLEASE READ:
1. Post as often as you wish.
2. Photo MUST have which scavenger item it is listed with it in order to receive points. Only one picture per item as I've listed them, please.
3. Categories are open to your interpretation, but please don't stray "too far" from the intended meaning.
4. Pictures must be new, ie taken no earlier than the time of this post, and date picture taken should be verifiable by EXIF data. Pictures that are not new cannot be counted toward points.
5. Points will be awarded as follows:
- One point for each item.
- Two points for each item with one asterisk.
- Three points for each item with two asterisks.
- You can only get one, two or three points for each item, i.e. they are not cumulative.
- If you post an item and then later get a picture of that same item that's worth higher points, you may replace the picture but you will only get the points for the higher item, not both.
6. The Winner will be the person who scores the highest points by the end of the Assignment. There will also be Second and Third place Winners for points scored. Winners will get a trophy for their signature - to be developed. (Bragging rights go to those who get pictures from every letter and every asterisk category.) Winners will be determined after midnight on September 1, 2010. Entrants will keep track of their own points but these points must be verifiable. Winners can expect to have points tallied carefully and should be able to provide EXIF data for all photos.
7. No cheating or arguing, please. It's all just for fun. If there is an issue, please PM me.
As an aside, there may be times that, by nature of the item, your picture will be difficult to take. Heck, you may barely get it  which is fine. Post it, by all means, to get those points. :thumbsup2
But since this *is* a Photography Board and part of the reason we're doing this is to improve our skills, let's try whenever possible to take *good* photos which we can all not only enjoy, but learn from.
If there are any interesting stories that go along with your getting you pictures, of course we DO want to hear them! :lmao:
Editing is allowed, but not necessary.
LET THE GAMES BEGIN!! :woohoo:

Looking forward to trying this.....but will have to get a little creative with the Last Day of School one as all the schools here are already out for the summer......gotta think on that one! Great list!:thumbsup2
Wow Linda - you sure put a lot of thought (and work!) into this list! Thank you so much!
Although I took a ton of photos at the Memorial Day parade this morning and have many that will fit your categories, but they were all before you posted the list so I can't use any of them, darn it! Well, there's alway the 4th of July parade.....

Great job Linda in putting this together and organizing it. I am looking forward to participating in this. Awesome list of things to "find". I took almost 1200 shots today at an all day rodeo event ... once I get thru them I am planning to dive in and start scavenging. :) Thanks for all your hard work to give us all this great activity for the summer.

It looks like it going to be a lot of fun. I bought a new camera back at the end of February and I been trying to take a picture a day with it. This will definely help with ideas. I can see a couple of road trips coming up this summer because of the scavenger hunt items. Bring on the Road Trip.

Wow! That's a lot of work Linda!:cheer2: It looks like fun. Now I just have to get up out of my Adirondack chair and get a picture of it.:lmao:
Seriously, I use Smugmug to post pictures here and it apparently strips the exif data. Does Flickr do the same? If it keeps the exif intact, I'll open a Flickr account just to use to post pictures here.

I made a few minor tweaks to the list so if you printed it already, please note the changes and/or reprint. (Please see post #25 for specifics.)
I'm glad everyone's excited about the Hunt! I am too.
I appreciate that everyone has some recent pics that would fit some of the categories - believe me, I do too. But to be fair, we all need to start with a clean slate from the outset. That's how all scavenger hunts are run.
Questions:
Can we only get one thing in each category, for example, can we only get one A or one of each theme in A? Understand?
You can get one or all in the category. The more you get, the more points you get.
will have to get a little creative with the Last Day of School one as all the schools here are already out for the summer......gotta think on that one!
Out already? Wow! I figure it's going to be pretty difficult for anyone to get everything on the list. I don't remember the last time I saw a platypus, for instance. But I was thinking of some of our friends in different parts of the country - and other countries - and wanted to be sure there were things they could get, too. I think there's plenty there to keep us all busy, and I'll be pretty surprised if someone gets them all!
I can see a couple of road trips coming up this summer because of the scavenger hunt items. Bring on the Road Trip.
:thumbsup2 That's the spirit! Can't wait to see your work.

You don't need to post the EXIF, just keep it handy so that if you're in the running as a winner, you can provide it. :) (Winners will have to show EXIF.) We're going to go on the Honor System here, but I'll hope that everyone follows the rules and uses new pictures.

Yes. You shouldn't have any trouble with the papoose and a few others, then, either. Your new camera's going to get a workout. ;)

Do you want us to just make posts every day?
I was thinking of making a album on photobucket called The Hunt and including a link in my signature with all the pictures for the assignment in there. Each picture can be called what it represents in the contest to make it a little easier to tally up in the end. Thoughts?

I was thinking of doing the same sort of thing. Also, photobucket keeps the exif data and it is free so anyone wanting a nice easy free hosting site that keeps the exif data, photobucket works great for that and for posting on here.

EXIF data is data that's embedded in the photo when it's taken that includes the date and time it was shot, what settings were used, type of camera, etc. You can't necessarily see it when you right click on the photo (that's a different date, which signifies when it's placed on hosting site I believe), but there is software that enables you to see it, and, as pp's mentioned, some photo hosting sites make it readily available.

I was thining along the same lines - for ease. I might use my SmugMug acct. But I'd hope that the pictures themselves are posted, too.

Absolutely! It'll be fun to see what everyone's coming up with!

FYI re: the edits I made last night:
- added Disney's excluded to Boardwalk***
- changed Barbeque Shack to BBQ shack
- deleted cobweb, but left spider web (too similar, and meant to delete one or the other)
- added with bird* to buoy
- added or monk alone* to monastery
- added prize winning vegetables with ribbon* to vegetable garden
*** I did that on most of the shots that could be found at Disney (at least that was my intention) because that would be too easy for us (we'd probably have dozens), with the exception of the WL geyser, which will only be worth one point.

So there is nothing I have to do right? I take my pic (do I have to use the date setting on my camera ?) and I use photobucket to host (just the free version) and then I post it here,,,nothing else I have to do to prove when taken? When I right click on some of the pics I have posted it only shows when created amount of pixels, dimensions, and the link for the host site...confused...nothing about the camera used settings etc...? See you are teaching me a lot already...thank you :worship:

If you are taking pictures that are new since yesterday afternoon, it's not something you need to worry about. Just have fun and post your pictures as you usually do. There is nothing else you have to do.
If you're in the running as a winner, you might have to show that your pics were indeed all new, just because it is a contest and some people may either not have been aware of the rules or thought they'd skirt them a bit  (as my DH and his team did the time we did a scavenger hunt in real life; of course he would also tell you that one of the people on my team tried to stretch the interpretations a bit and I wouldn't be able to disagree, lol).
Remember, it's all in fun. Now stop worrying and go out and get some pictures. :)

Hey Pea, just wanted to say a big thank you for all of this. You really gave me a kick start this morning and it turned into a fantastic day with my son.
On a typical day, I worked late the night before (2nd shift) and wake up early to take my oldest (DS6) to the bus and every other day my youngest (DS4) goes to preschool. Today I usually would have begged my youngest to take a nap, but instead we went out shooting! We hit a memorial park and a state park and had a blast! I even stopped in to the stables where my aunt and uncle work to see the horses. Since I barely get to see them, I can honestly say we both needed that. I know I won't be able to do it every day, but there's no way that this will be the only one.
Thank you so much!

Ugh! This isn't starting well. Thought I would get some last day of school shots, but had to pick DD8 up early because she's sick. Looks like strep, but we see the doctor in a couple of hours.
In the meantime, I could always get that shot of the adirondack chair on my back porch!

NateNLogansDad, thank you, your post made my day. I totally remember those days of long, late shifts and half day kindergarten, lol. I'm glad you had fun with it this morning. Going to a horse stall and a state park would be pretty cool. :thumbsup2 And connecting with people and the world is always a good thing. It's so easy to get caught up in the rigors of every day life, it'll do us all some good to unwind a bit!
I actually got some shots this morning, too. I'm sure I was driving the friend I was walking with crazy stopping every two seconds to take a picture. But he was one of the people that helped me put the list together (and ran the scavenger hunt I did IRL) so he was a good sport about it. The funny part was we were planning to head down to one area but changed our minds last minute. I didn't think I'd get much where we were going, but I actually got a lot, even from memory because my printer ran out of ink.
I also got some ideas for 2011 while I was looking around. For instance, I saw a guy raising a flag (and got his picture, he smiled and everything :lmao: ) and realized that would have been a good asterisk category for Old Glory. (Too late now, the list is finalized as is.)
Which reminds me: I'd appreciate it if, while doing these challenges and we think of other ideas, that we all jot them down for next year to make it a little easier to get the list put together then. We can pool the ideas when the time comes. Thank you!

We are soooo excited to do this!!!!!
Let me get this straight. We can only get points per item listed. We can't get 2+ points for taking 2+ pictures of different kangaroos right???? The kangaroo picture is only worth 1 point no matter how many kangaroo pictures we take. Thank you for putting this together. It will be a great activity to do with the whole family. Thank you Thank you Thank you:worship:

Yes, a trip to the boardwalk, but without the kids. I'll have to sneak out one night when DH is home. My work schedule is light now so I might try to get over there tomorrow if it's not raining. I feel a salt water taffy craving coming on! :rotfl:

Okay, thanks! Her class was supposed to have a beach party this afternoon, but she had to miss it due to strep. She's been sicker today than ever with it. Here she is this afternoon sleeping on the couch while her classmates were having fun with water balloons.

I copy and paste in an Excel file and got it down to eight pages. Then if you print in one pages at a time front and back I got down to four pages.
I can email to you if you want.

Oh I just had a thought (as weird as that sounds it doesnt happen as often as one would want...)
Would it be easier to keep track of it all if each entrant started their own thread, that way they would all be in their individual groups, then all each poster has to do is edit their original post. They could bump it weekly after they update it. I'msure it will flood the photography board but it certainly would add more action to the forum...

I have it on good authority that the highest number of points one could possibly obtain would be 541.
I was planning to put the words on index cards to easily store in my camera bag (I'll print and cut/tape). I'll use both sides and staple them together and keep track of what I take and what I still need. I'll put some of the shorter lettered categories (like XYZ) on one card.
DaisysDH, I'd like to just keep it all here on one thread. Everyone can track their own points fairly easily, I think.
NateNLogansDad, good showing! (Hopefully someone can answer your horse question!)
Colleen, no, boat moving is worth two. Nice job! Especially love the Shepherd! I also love those adirondacks, wish the store was near me, lol. I spent a lot of time in Atlantic City as a kid. It was a family travel destination and my father had business there as well. A lot of the summery things I envisioned for this assignment came from my memories there (though I also live in a beachy area now). I haven't been to the Boardwalk since the casinos came in, though. I did look up the hotel we used to stay at thinking about a little trip to show the kids, and apparently there was a murder there! :scared1:

NP, it was just a suggestion, if there are 50 participants, who post 1 new photo a day thats 4 new pages to track a day. Didnt know if we were self counting or if there was an official judge. Nope, but we still have wikipedia....
From Wikipedia:
The modern Quarter Horse has a small, short, refined head with a straight profile, and a strong, well-muscled body, featuring a broad chest and powerful, rounded hindquarters. They usually stand between 14 and 16 hands high, although some Halter-type and English hunter-type horses may grow as tall as 17 hands.[citation needed]
There are two main body types: the stock type and the hunter or racing type. The stock horse type is shorter, more compact, stocky and well muscled, yet agile. The racing and hunter type Quarter Horses are somewhat taller and smoother muscled than the stock type, more closely resembling the Thoroughbred.[citation needed]
That being said, I still don't know what a qtr horse is...

I believe it's considered Media PA. It's at Rose Tree Park just off of Rt 1 and 252. They have concerts and stuff during the summer and it's pretty nice. For the most part it's just a huge open field but if you're ever in the area, check out the Ridley Creek State Park just down the road. That place is HUGE and has all kinds of trails for walking and biking. On the weekends, they have pony rides too.

Luckily I keep my cell phone with me all the time and it has a decent camera. I think I'm going to make a separate gallery on my smugmug site to keep these pictures in one place.
If anyone has an iPhone AND has MobileMe with it, you can copy and paste the list to a word document then download that file to your MobileMe iDisk and have it on your phone at all times.

Great shots, everyone! Love the police officer and the Emu - which actually gave me my chuckle for the day. "Emu" was the subject of much debate when we were putting the list together. We had a lot of laughs over it. I knew someone here would find one! :thumbsup2
Don, love the headstone. I'll probably be able to find some good ones, too. There's a couple of colonial cemeteries I've been meaning to explore, this will give me the chance.
Kyle, we may be in competition for some of the same items!

Birds nest, complete with bird (pigeon). Kind of funny how the building owners put up those spikey things to stop the birds from nesting, but I saw 3 nests built right on the spikes - this was the only one that had a bird on the nest. I guess if the birds are determined to build there, nothing will stop them!:)

My first post to one of the monthly assigments in a long time.
While watching my Husband try his first Bud Light ever today, I couldn't help but take a picture. The verdict? He wasn't a fan, because real men drink lager....lager, or Scotch. :lmao:

Just realized I have another taken today that I can use for the hunt. How exciting.
Our littlest kitten, Mr. Winkle (who is a female, by the way). She has huge round eyes that remind me of Puss In Boots from the Shrek movies, so cute.

:rotfl2: You're too funny. I took the camera out for a spin after shooting only a handful of shots during 2010 so far (have just been in a rut) and felt SOOOOO FREAKIN RUSTY. You can't imagine how much crap I got today, but thank you all the same. :goodvibes
It's an 85mm prime. Blasphemous, but I don't own any zooms at the moment, decided that right now they weren't really my thing...whatever that means.

PS: LOVE your shot for "Bubble." Not sure if this is straight out of the camera or not, but if you did any editing, I think you did a great job. Not too heavy handed and had just enough contrast for my liking. :thumbsup2

Do you own any primes yet, like a 35mm or 50mm f/1.8? If not, I can completely understand why you'd think I'm nuts, but once you have one I'm sure you'll fall in love. :lovestruc
I definitely don't mind the zooming, I think it's more that I like shooting with a really shallow DOF and while the f/2.8 can produce some really nice subject isolation, I just think it's easier with f/1.8 and below. Plus, they're light, they've been making them for years so I can get some good deals on used ones (like the 85mm f/1.8 and my 50mm f/1.2) and they force me to get a little more creative than I might if I had the option of zooming.
AND contrary to popular DIS belief, I don't have many lenses. Just four, plus a lensbaby---so really five total, I guess. :cutie:

I have the 35mm 1.8. Until I step up to a D90 I need newer lenses for now. One of these days I'll take a day's worth of pictures for the assignment just using the 35mm for some nice DOF shots. Since I haven't used it in months, I think it needs to get a little dirty! Maybe tomorrow depending on the agenda hmmm.....

You do NOT need newer lenses for now, not at all! My 50mm f/1.2 is completely manual focus (on all cameras, not just mine) and since I have a D90 it doesn't meter at all. It's a piece of cake and if you over or underexpose a little, you can just make adjustments in post.
I may not own that many lenses, but I AM the ultimate enabler.

Thank you, no I didn't desaturate it, I did shoot it in raw and awb which made it look a little yellow so I changed the color temperature and adjusted the levels and contrast.

Well, it's that time of year again. Memorial marks the start of summer (at least for our doggies) and that means......WATERMELON!
WATERMELON

Feeding them watermelon is one of my favorite weekend activities, it's so cute and fun to watch.
On another note, Linda---I don't see a ** next to watermelon if you take a picture of your extremely cute dog eating it, but I think there should be. :thumbsup2
http://annnewjerz.smugmug.com/For-Fun/Furry-Friends/My-Pets/6/892213625_rLXpb-M.jpg
Our chocolate lab kept grabbing his slices and running into the yard, and since I don't walk around those land mines without shoes, I'm without cute pictures of him eating his summer treat. I did, however, manage to get him to smile for the camera once we got inside. Although I realize this is not for points, I felt it necessary to share in the same post so he didn't get jealous when he noticed his brother was on the DIS and he was not.
A little blurry, but hilarious to see on my LCD screen none the less.

Had a nice visit with my grandparents today and got some scavenger hunt pictures while I was there. My grandparents are avid bird watchers so all we had to do was fill the feeders and wait. This is such a fun assignment!

Just a quick word on the storm car, which I LOVE! I don't think it will fit Icon, but it would be good for stormy.
One other thought - it could also be used for Ingenuity. :thumbsup2
Ann, when I saw the first watermelon shot I laughed to my DH, "Her dogs eat watermelon". Then sure enough, there it was in the next picture! Love the smile/teeth in the last shot. (Hey, don't forget to label the beer shot. Frosty Beer, right? Or was it Emotion? ;) )
Whoever had the azalea bush picture - suggestion: use Azalea with that and save Flower for another type.
These are great - and too funny! I really enjoy seeing where everyone lives and individual interpretations of the items.
I had a fun Hunt yesterday morning. I'd just finished up a couple of overnight shifts and had a couple of things I wanted to look for around Boston on the way home. (Besides the portapottie) I got a little side tracked when I spotted a Foggy Prudential building, so, in an effort to get closer to it I worked my way down some tiny streets and alleys that I've never even ventured into before! Then I kept seeing one more thing after another and before I knew it, almost an hour had gone by. I just came out of the fire station when my phone rang, it was my DS telling me I had to get home soon, I had his "cup" in the car and he needed it for a morning game! :faint: Talk about bursting my bubble. :lmao:

I had never seen the Harriet Tubman monument in Boston before, so it was fun to capture it on the hunt. I wasn't clear about her Boston roots so I looked it up to learn more. Here's what I found, for anyone interested:
There is a small park and statue near the corner of Columbus Avenue and Pembroke Street in Boston's South End that is a memorial to Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman is a well-known former slave who helped 70 to 80 slaves to freedom.
Tubman visited the Boston area to discuss issues of slavery and freedom with abolitionists. There is a statue of Tubman leading slaves to freedom as well as a map that shows the major stops. Starting in Maryland, the route stopped in Delaware, Philadelphia, New York City, Albany, Rochester, Syracuse and Canada.
SE5: Harriet Tubman House and United South End Settlements 566 Columbus Avenue
This site honors Harriet Tubman (1820-1913). Born into slavery (her real name was Araminta), Tubman escaped in 1839 and lived most of her life in New York. But she went back to slave territory 19 times, risking her life to lead over 300 slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad and earning her the title “Black Moses.” Poet Eloise Greenfield wrote, “Harriet Tubman didn’t take no stuff, wasn’t scared of nothing neither.” The site was the first settlement house in the United States (1891). Besides housing a day care center and other services, Harriet Tubman House has photos and exhibits on Harriet’s life.
SE6: Harriet Tubman Park
In 1999, a 10-foot bronze sculpture that honors Underground Railroad “conductor” Harriet Tubman was dedicated. Step on Board is the first statue on city property recognizing an African American woman and the first on city-owned property honoring a woman. Created by sculptor Fern Cunningham, this powerful work of art is the focus of the newly-renovated Harriet Tubman Park. Cunningham, an art teacher who lives in Dorchester, spent three years creating the statue of the physically small woman whose words “galvanized abolitionists, both black and white” according to the Boston Globe, and whose courageous actions saved the lives of hundreds.

Nice work, MadilynnsMomma. Your pics have a certain familiarity about them. ;)

I've got the Korean War Monument already and have some thoughts for museum - glad he fit for Icon, and yep, it's from Main Street, Hyannis

What? You want me to help the competition?!?!? :lmao:
The trails are caused by the shutter being open longer. The 2 important things you need are a LONG shutter speed and for your camera to be MOTIONLESS. I set my camera up on a tripod on an overpass last night on the way home from work. If you have a ledge and more guts than me, that will work. Set your camera to "Shutter Priority" and experiment. I went with 15 seconds. If the camera moves in the slightest way, the picture will be blurry.
Also, set the ISO low. I went with the lowest setting I had (100) because if the shutter being open so long. Looking at it again, I should have gone manual mode and maybe put the Aperture down a little.
Here's a tip for those cameras that don't have the functionality to control shutter speed. Get closer and TURN OFF THE FLASH! It may not be the same shot, you'll get headlight trails.

The rivalry goes back A LOT further than Magic and Bird. Before the 80's the Lakers and Celtics met 5 other times in the NBA Finals.... The Celtics first won in 1959 while the Lakers were still in Minneapolis. Then the Celtics won again in 1962, 1963, 1965 and 1966 after the Lakers moved to Los Angeles. They didn't meet again till 1984 when the Celtics won again, then the Lakers finally won in 1985 and 1987 before finally meeting again in 2008.

Impressive captures everyone! Too many good ones to shout out to (well ok especially loved the Woof and the Emotion in the nursery), but enjoyed all of them! :goodvibes (Didn't see any that weren't acceptable.)
Amy, I can't believe your youngest has graduated! Will/are your sons doing marching band in college? Do you have deer in your yard like that all the time? Wow!
Hi Linda! Yep, I'm officially OLD now!;) My DS20 is still doing marching band in college, but DS18 wants nothing to do with it. They joined high school marching band for diff. reasons - my older son loves music. My younger son also has musical talent, but he only joined band for the social aspect. When we were looking at colleges, he had only 3 things he knew for sure: he didn't want to go too far from home, he didn't want to go to the same college as his older brother, and he was NOT going to join the college band.:)

Yes, it is the "right" way up! ;) The branches of the grevillea are quiet soft and his weight bends the branch dramatically!! This is from my front garden and I was able to get within about 4 feet of him!!:)

I would like to join in on this! I just got back from a Disney trip so I am a little behind. But since I am a teacher on summer break this will get me to learn to use my camera. I just got my dslr in May so it is all new and I am not that good at it yet, but this will help.
Do I just post as many pictures at a time as I can? From what I read it seems like as you take the picture just post it, right?
Oh and another question... since it is "open for interpretation" if we post something that doesn't count will you tell us?

HI Linda - thanks - I feel honoured that you thought of me for this!! :thumbsup2 It makes some of them easier for me..!! Although I will say I'm not sure what some of the items are either - I wait for someone else to post a picture, then I have my "a-ha" moment!!!
The green bird is a rainbow lorikeet - we have lots of them here. They are nectar eaters, and the native grevilleas and bottle brushes are their favourite food! Hence I have lots of those plants in my garden! They are so beautiful! (Charlotte chases birds from the garden, but I have told her that these birds are OK and can stay!!! :lmao:)
I am so loving everyone's photos - it's good to have something to focus on now my Disney holiday is over...
Keep the photos coming!! This is fun!!

In the spirit of keeping it fun, I'd hope people just do their best to work within the guidelines:
3. Categories are open to your interpretation, but please don't stray "too far" from the intended meaning

I'm sooooo happy I found this :) I lost motivation some how around the end of the school year which is not good since I'm going to school for photography next year so this is the perfect way for me to stay active! If it wasn't 1am I'd be all over editing my photos a very special event to rack up some quick points, but I have to work but tomorrow I am so starting!!
Thank you sooo much!!!
