I'm reading an awful lot about "concierge" service. Can someone explain to me what this is and why it seemsto be such a big deal? Thanks!

Concierge service is a hightened level of service provided by the rosort at a premium. The services vary from resort to resort but in general the guest can call the Concierge desk and have tickets,PS's strollers and such taken care of by the CM's. The lounges provide continental breakfasts and snacks thru the day. Some provide late night snacks and cordials. They also have turndouwn service and robes and slippers in your room for use during your stay.

At WDW, concierge service generally means: pre trip planning help, with things like PS for restaurants, any special activities you want to do, tickets, etc. It also includes a quicker check in, not having to wait in line at the front desk (at least, at the GF it does). It means robes and slippers in the rooms; it means food and beverages out from 6 am - 10 pm; it means a CM generally available during those hours too, who is dedicated to only concierge guests. It CAN mean maybe a little extra pull in getting a diffcult to obtain PS, but it DOESN'T guarantee that.
