We started collecting pins in 2007, really got into it in late 2009 and I have yet to find a pin marked AP. I thought I would ask a few questions about that.
1. Is there only one AP pin put into circulation per pin design or are there several?
2. Is AP stamped into the pin in a certain place on the pin or does it vary?
3. Can you find AP pins on the rack when you purchase or is this something you can only find by trading?
4. Is it easy to spot an AP pin, meaning are there noticable differences that make you realize it could be an AP pin OR is it just a total surprise when you flip the pin over and find the marking?
THANKS in advance for any help!

Can you clarify what you mean by "AP"? Because to me, that stands for Annual Passholder. And Annual Passholder pins have to be purchased from the CM working the pin area register. They are not rack pins. This is why I am confused about what you mean by AP.

I'm so sorry I didn't make that clear...I meant AP for artist proof (I *think* that's what it stands for)

I have a few Artist Proof pins and I remember when purchasing them that the bottom front of the pin backing said Artist Proof and the back of the pins also said Artist Proof, then whatever number in the series it was.

The artist proof pins are made in each of the metals (gold, silver and black) so there will be 3 AP pins per design. Disneystore.com has sold them in the past and you can often find them at pin trading events on the pin trading boards. If you know a particular pin was released with gold metal for example and you see one in silver or black then it could be an AP pin. AP pins are marked on the back "AP" sometimes it can be a little difficult to find the mark. If you attend any of the pin trading events at DL or WDW they also auction off AP pins.

A few weeks ago I traded with Scoop Sanderson on Main Street in WDW and got an Artist Proof Pin (Pluto Christmas Party 2009) from him. He is known to carry them every so often.

I have actually purchased a few of my AP pins of the rack @ World of Disney - In NYC and in Orlando - they were buried on the rack with the regular pins - when I got home I took them off the card and saw the AP stamped on the backs - I was not looking for APs and consider myself very lucky.
I do not recommmend that you take pins off the cards in the store..
From what I have heard/read there can be 1 or 10+ AP's in a particular run of pins.

There is a very camouflaged "AP" stamped on the back of the pin
If this works you will be able to see it on the back of pin : Pin 73710: WDW - E-Ticket Attractions - Test Track
