On August 12, 1851, Isaac Singer was granted a patent on his sewing machine.

On August 12, 1944, Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., son of Joseph and Rose Fitzgenald Kennedy, was killed with his co-pilot when their explosives-laden Navey plane blew up over England.

On August 12, 1953 tthe Soviet Union conducted a secret test of its first hydrogen bomb.

On August 12, 1972, the last American combat ground troops left Vietnam.

On August 12, 1992, the United States, Mexico and Canada concluded the North American Free Trade Agreement to create the world's largest trading bloc.
