There's a rumor floating around (pardon the pun) that several WiSHers are meeting for the inaugural Myrtle Beach (SC) Mini (Half) Marathon (http://runmyrtlebeach.com/site80.aspx) to be held October 24th.
The draw??? Another state for those trying to capture their Half Fanatic/Half2Run 25 states, a WiSH gathering for those of us who can't get enough WiSH socializing, and an amazing 8-inch surfboard medal!
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i132/getnthinr/myrtlebeachminimedal.jpg
Several of us are planning to stay at the Hampton Inn at Broadway at the Beach (http://hamptoninn.hilton.com/en/hp/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=MYRCCHX) (the restaurant, shopping, touristy center of Myrtle Beach (http://www.broadwayatthebeach.com/stores.aspx?type=Nightlife)). The hotel is offering a discounted rate of $99/night for two queens non-smoking. Call 888-916-2001. Be sure to request rooms near WISH Racing Team!! (There is a 72hr cancellation notice required to cancel without penalty.)
This is an inaugural event, so there are no guarantees, but the race web site (http://www.runmyrtlebeach.com/Home.htm) does claim the event is "walker-friendly".
If you are a Facebooker, the Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon fan page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Myrtle-Beach-Mini-Marathon/158511436946) is here:

I'm really wanting to do this one. Just waiting to hear back from a friend in NC on whether he is doing the race or not and can use his family's place. Raleigh is the only place down there Southwest fly's into. What's up with that?

WDWFAN9 (Pat) said that SWA is supposed to start flying into Charleston, SC soon. Not sure when, though. If I can get better airfare, I'll go. Right now, the best option for me is to fly Delta and the ticket price is $650. :scared1: What's up with that?!!!!!!!

DH Jim (jims2cool) and I are in! I don't usually repeat non-Disney states, but made an exception for Indy, and now for this one. It looks awesome!!
We'll be staying at the Hampton Inn/Broadway Fri-Mon; the hotel provides a free shuttle to/from the airport. Since the closest SWA airport is currently Raleigh (no word on how soon service to Charleston will begin), we ended up booking with Delta, directly to Myrtle Beach.
We hope to see a lot of WISHers there!!

The medal is awesome looking, I might have to try and make it to this race. However, my race schedule is pretty full already.
I got the Wine & Dine HM(Oct 2nd), the Richmond HM (Nov) and the WDW Marathon (my first) in Jan. Trying to add the Myrtle Beach HM might be too much.

Can you tell me more about this?
Funny thing is that I told my husband I would want to run a half in every state before I am too old to run anymore ---- I am new to this, as I just did my first half at the Princess.
Is there really a bunch of races that are part of this group?
As a mom of 4, wife and a new runner - this is a great way to keep me on track!
Any info would be great -- thanks a million in advance;)

Can you tell me more about this?
Actually, swim-mom, I'm not a member of either group (and I don't even play one on TV :rotfl:). I just hang out with WiSHers who are!
I think the Half2Run (http://www.half2run.com/) folks express it best (though the Half Fanatics (http://www.halffanatics.com/) have the coolest shirts -- Next to us WiSHers, of course!):
Think of all the places you've never dreamed of going to and never wanted to. By committing to only half the states, you can find 25 pretty nice places you want to visit.
Also, we love running and travel, running a full marathon makes it hard to enjoy the experience of a new city, you worry about not doing to much before … and can’t always do much after. <snip> With a half-marathon, an easy sightseeing run the day before and after the race are not out of the question, in fact, it might just be what the doctor ordered. Race half as far, run twice as much!
On race day, you'll be happy to see the finish line after 13.1 miles. The Party Can Start Early and there is time left in the day for more adventure!! You're done in half the time and if you're running in crummy weather--you're in it for half as long.
The Half Fanatics let you increase your "ranking" by the number of halfs you complete within a certain number of day, while the Half2Run folks are more focused on the ultimate goal of 25 halfs in 25 states.
I believe several WiSHers are members of Half Fanatics and a few of Half2Run -- maybe they can chime in.
WDWFAN9

I'm a member of both! Love the philosophy of Half2Run......I've done 20 states so far and we are having a blast.

Huh, I am interested. I have sent an email to a friend to see if he would be in. I am doing the Wine & Dine and going down for marathon weekend in January so another long distance half might not be in the cards but I will crunch some numbers and see if it is possible.
If my friend can't go and anyone is interested in doing a room share shoot me a PM or post here. I can't guarantee I am in yet but knowing if I can at least split some of the expense it will make the decision easier.

Wendy, wish Tom and I could swing Myrtle Beach, but it just isn't going to fit into the fall travel schedule. Too far to drive and our airline buget is maxed out between the DL1/2 and W&D.

Colleen, WiSH you could make it too. I know what you mean about travel/race expenses. I'm trying to find races I can drive to nearby, but I think I'll need to wait till the Fall when things cool down and the schedule of races picks up.

Depends on your goals for WnD. My plan, in the words of a great friend, is to finish upright and smiling, and just within the timelimits, so it is no problem to do back-to-back events. I've also done a lot of halfs so I know how I feel afterwards. If you are looking to be super-speedy or are nursing injuries it might be a little more difficult.

This is so exciting. Myrtle Beach is just down the road from me. I've just registered for my very first race ever - I'm walking a local 4-mile walk next weekend.
I've never done so much as a 5K before but I walk regularly for exercise at about 5mph for 5 miles. I'd like to walk the Disney Princess Half at the end of Feb. I feel that a 5K will be no problem - is walking a half-marathon by Oct. 24 a reasonable goal for me? Like I said, I'm a regular walker but not speed walker. Thank you very much for any advice.

I'm going to have to take myself off of the maybe list. There is an outside chance I will end up doing the Men's Health Urbanathalon that weekend in Chicago with a group of friends but I won't be able to get down to this race in 2010. IF I do this race, it will truly be a back-to-back for me. I will do a race in Arkansas, get on a plane and do this race the next day. How goofy is that? However, my goals will probably be different than both of your's. Like Pat, I just plan to finish both races upright and with a smile. :teeth:

Yay! More people who have heard of this race!! :rotfl2:
It's local for me (relatively anyway) so I decided on a whim to sign up for it as a 'test run' for the Princess Half. We'll see if I'm ready by then!
I'll be walking 99% of it though. I'd love to know there are lots of other walkers out there. I know they made it a point to say it was Walker-Friendly, but I'm nervous that we just don't know HOW walker-friendly it is since it's the first time they've done this race.
I'm excited about it!

To say I'm nervous is an understatement. Can anyone give me a bit of an idea of what it's like to walk in a marathon? How crowded is it? How do they "corral" you? Does everyone who finishes in the allotted time get a medal? Do you always wear a bib w/ a number on it and that is how they time you?

Since this is an inaugural I am not sure how crowded it will be or if there are official corrals. Speaking in generalities - some smaller races just ask participants to self-corral according to your expected pace, others like Disney assign you to a corral and there is no moving into earlier corrals. This race gives all the finishers that awesome surfboard medal, which is way cool. You are expected to wear your bib on your front-side. I've forgotten which kind of timing chip MB is using....some clip on your shoelaces, other races have chips embedded in your bib (isn't technology great?). Your time will begin when you cross the start line.
Walking a half is very do-able and a blast. We like to party at the back-of-the-pack!! Come join the fun.

38 more days! Has everyone finalized their plans?
I'm starting to get nervous about my first half. I wanted to go out last weekend when I was down there and check out the course, but I didn't have time. I've been told there is a decent hill around mile marker 1. Then again, that may just be a hill for those of us used to walking/running at sea level. *laugh* Others of you may laugh!
Wow, the race is getting close! I know that everyone who runs/walks the half gets a finisher's medal but I also read on Facebook that everyone who completes the 5k gets a medal too. Anyone know if that is true? I must admit, a little bling will help me through to the finish;)

You know, I saw that same post on Facebook and I'm not so sure it's true (even though it was the 'race people' that posted it). It says nothing whatsoever in the race information about anyone except the winners getting medals for the 5K. I know because I read it about 20 times while trying to decide if I should sign up for the 5K instead of the half (and then, of course, I went back and read it again after I saw the FB post :lmao: ). I am definitely doing this for the bling since it's a trial run for the Princess.
I really wanted to question it on FB but didn't.
Also, I asked once and someone else did recently about race photography at this race. No one has ever answered any questions about photography. I wonder if they just missed those posts or if they are not answering on purpose. I'd love to have pictures from the race!

Elizabeth,
Both 5K and half marathon participants will receive finisher medals. Age group awards for both the 5K and half marathon will also be handed out.
Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon Info (http://www.runmyrtlebeach.com/Nav_Top_Section/Half_Marathon/Race_Information.htm)
Please click on the link above and scroll to the bottom of the page. This section can be found on our website if you scroll over the “Half Marathon” tab and click to the right on the “Race Information tab”. Aside from the finishers medals, half marathon participants who finish in the top 3 of their age groups (see link for age divisions) will also receive another award.
Coastal 5K Info (http://www.runmyrtlebeach.com/Nav_Top_Section/Coastal_5K.htm)
Those Coastal 5K participants who also finish in the top 3 in their age group will also receive age group awards. If you click on the link above and scroll all the way down, you can find the age division breakdown for the 5K.
Yes, there will be a photographer on site for these events!
We hope this helped you out!
Best,

I can't find specifics on the medal for the 5k. I think it may have been a later addition to the race since it wasn't first promoted.

I'm walking the Half. Unfortunately, my MS doesn't allow me to do much running (at least, without the falling part :lmao: but I can do a teeny bit when the desire hits). My longest distance so far has been 11 miles, but I did do a weekend two weeks ago with a 5K on Saturday and 11 miles on Sunday.
You should do the half! I'm hoping the course is as 'walker-friendly' as they advertise it to be!

OK, I think I've caught the list up again. Let me know if I inadvertantly left off your name or your running buddy's.
Now, it's time to start planning the extra curricular activities. There are both some fabulous tourist-trap-type spots and some off-the-beaten-path spots at Myrtle Beach.
Here are a few suggestions:
Ripleys Aquarium (http://myrtlebeach.ripleyaquariums.com/your-visit/welcome/) -- small, but cool, aquarium with walk-thru shark tunnel
Brookgreen Gardens (http://www.brookgreen.org/) -- quiet, scenic gardens filled with statuary
Margaritaville (http://www.margaritavillemyrtlebeach.com/) -- great food, great giant (and I mean GIANT) blender photo op
Barefoot Landing for photos with real live tigers and tiger cubs (http://www.myrtlebeachsafari.com/)
Hard Rock Cafe (http://www.hardrock.com/locations/cafes3/cafe.aspx?LocationID=107&MIBEnumID=3)

So, I gave in and signed up for the 5K on Saturday too. I'm hoping I'm not digging a hole for myself. :lmao: I couldn't pass up a chance for another medal! And, the awards ceremony isn't until an hour and a half after the race starts (the High Heel Dash starts an hour after the 5K), so hopefully I can walk as slowly as I want (to enjoy the morning and just have a warm-up walk) and still 'finish'.
That would be nice! I did have to extend my stay since I wasn't planning on coming in until Saturday, but this will be more fun!

With all the excitement of Wine and Dine, is anyone still headed for Myrtle Beach? I'm guessing MeredithRX is! ;)

Wendy - Thank you sooooo much for the tourist trap spots. Those of us from Michigan have no clue how to pass the time before the race. :-)
We (Cathy and my friend/Coworker Linda) are really looking forward to this one.
If you have any other suggestions on what to do we would really appreciate them.
Can't wait to see you!

Did everyone else get their bib #'s? I'm 2928. I don't have my buddies numbers yet.
Anyone else?

#1455 here!
I was excited to get the email tonight. It makes it seem just that much more real. I am SO ready to head to the beach for the weekend. I know I live nearby...but I'm ready to get away!

How am I the only person I've heard of so far (from multiple sources) who doesn't have a bib number in the 2000s? :)

Awesome!!!!
We are staying at the Driftwood Lodge. Someone I know stayed there and they liked it well enough. We chose this spot because there will be 3 of us and we were able to get a suite for $60 a night. Not too bad when you are splitting it 3 ways.:cool1:
Can't wait for this race!!

OMG! I have to say there are too many hotels to choose from!! I will look into the 2 Pat and Susan posted. Are they close to the start or finish line? I am trying to get my friend to come with me but if not I will have to drag the DH and kiddos along.

We're staying right at the start, but we're down there a lot, so we didn't really feel the need to stay near the water. There will definitely be no shortage of hotel options this time of year! It's the perfect time to go. All the tourists are gone! ;)

We're staying at the Hampton Inn at Broadway at the Beach (http://hamptoninn.hilton.com/en/hp/hotels/photo_gallery.jhtml?ctyhocn=MYRCCHX) (primarily because many folks are members of their loyalty program and are collecting "points" for their stay), but I've heard it's full.
There are a ton of hotels in MB though -- and a lot of good deals this time of year, as others have said.
I'm hoping we'll all gather postrace for a victory meal. Broadway at the Beach has a lot of dining options (http://www.broadwayatthebeach.com/stores.aspx?type=DiningLighter) -- well, heck, all of Myrtle Beach is full of dining options -- it's a tourist mecca!

Yeah the Hampton Inn Broadway at the Beach is full. I am thinking about the Breakers. Need to call to see if I can get late checkout.
Where is everyone eating saturday night? Looks like I will have my girls with me for the expo and dinner. Am thinking of taking them to Friendly's restaurant for dinner. Ice cream is a carb right?? ;)

Dang! I just gave up my room at Hampton Inn. I should have checked to see if anyone needed it.
Hope you all have a great race! Since I can't be there, I'll be rooting for you in spirit. Can't wait to see your pics!

Go WISH Team! I'll be missing out on all the fun. Hope you all have a great event.
That 5K medal is so tempting but my hip hasn't been too happy with me this week. Planning to save it all for the half. I will be at Holiday Inn Pavillion.

Good luck to the 5k runners!!

Hope to see a few of you this weekend; I'm running in the 5k, only. I know Meredith will be there. :thumbsup2

It was an awesome time! If anyone is interested in this race next year early registration is open until Oct 31st.....only $45. Wow! What a deal.
Keep in mind though that the inaugural RnR St Louis MO race is the same weekend - and at least a few of us are headed that direction!

It was great! I really enjoyed my first Half. I saw a lot of WISH shirts, but never could get away to chat! Hopefully next time! I almost got to a large group of you near the info table/tent after the Half around 11 o'clock or so, but my friend pulled me one way and all of you must have walked the other because when I turned around, the sea of green was gone!
OK, someone had a DH and 2 adorable girls with cowbells near the mall all dressed up in WISH t-shirts. They were such good cheerleaders- even for those in the VERY back of the pack! Whoever they are, tell them they did a great job!
