What I like about DL is that you can stay off-site, go cheap and be within walking distance. :thumbsup2

I really need to get a room. My goal was by Monday...well, I spent half the day at the doctor's. Checking my thumb from fall two weeks ago and tehn a MRI on it. Both ligaments are torn and bone broken, so......I Had to go to the surgeon Wed blah blah balh.....so I don't have my resevations yet. I'm traveling solo so I need a decent, cheap place.
Training is going slow, but at least I can still train a bit.

I am. I am on week 3 day 3. It will have me finishing the program a few weeks early but since it ends with 10 miles I will repete the last week a few times becasue I really want to try the 13.1 miles before the Half Marathon.

I run and walk the miles becasue I can't keep it up the whole time but I plan to run/walk the race anyway. I do noticethat I can run for longer periods of time now and at a faster pace. I have been doing most of my training on the tredmill at the gym because I had no way to know for far I was going outside. But I just got the Nike+ shoe thingy to use with my iPhone but now it's been too windy to run out side. :sad2:

We've decided we're going to drive. That way we can check DD7 out of school mid-way through Friday (checking out early doesn't count for an absence!) and we can still get down there before dark. It will also allow us to pack an ice chest with some healthy food options. Not that we won't hit a few park favorites, but on Friday and Saturday, especially, I don't want to load up on typical DLR offerings of high carb/high fat food. What types of meals do you usually eat the night before the Disneyland Half? Do you eat at one of the restuarants? Or do you bring something from home?

Hi!

I'm running the half again and staying at the Anaheim Desert Inn and Suites.

There are plenty of resturants within walking distances around Disneyland. There is Mimi's right by HoJo, & the Garden Walk mall has Bubba Gumps, Roy's PF Changs, CA pizza kitchen, Cheese cake factory.

If you have a car you can drive down S. Harbor Dr and there is a Bucca De Beppo, Joe's crab shack & a few other resturants. There is also a Target and Von's (grocery store) down S. Harbor Dr.

The parks have "ok" pasta if that is what you are looking for the night before. Someone mentioned the Gardenwalk restaurants and that is a great choice.

I just moved to orange county (15 minutes from the parks) and may splurge on one of the Disney hotels as my welcome to Cali present to myself. I hate mornings so every extra minute I can get would be great.

Also love the idea of World of Color Sunday night. I am sitting in line waiting for for the show right now. It is amazing!!!!

Happy training everyone.

We fly into LAX as well because of the price. We use Super Shuttle (www.supershuttle.com) to get us to Anaheim. I think it's one of the recommended shuttles to use. We've never had a problem with them.

Thanks, Maura! I'll have to do more digging as the one for super shuttle expired at the end of May. Some of the others expire at the end of August. However, the codes still might be good or there may be another link with some updated coupons. This just reminds me that we need to be looking out for coupons for our trip.

Joan - several people I know use the Super Shuttle. Have you checked the rates for this service? As Maura suggested, there's probably some coupons available for this. Since it's Labor Day weekend, there may not be as many good deals out there because this is a very busy time for DL.

I know you can get either a DL Bus or Super Shuttle from SNA. Forgot the website for the Super Shuttle, I've googled it in the past. Was recently looking for my sister, b/c she is flying out for the 5K. I think the Super Shuttle was actually cheaper than the DL Bus. Booking a round trip also may lower the cost vs buying 2 one ways. It may also be faster, b/c only so many people can fit into one shuttle as opposed to a whole bus. If I remember correctly, the shuttles can only hold a max of like 12 people. Hope that helps.

Thanks Stephanie. I've been to that thread, just can't decide the best option so if anyone has an opinion let me know.

I'm glad you had found my transportation thread, but sorry it didn't help you decide on your means of transportation. I think it's fun to take the Disneyland Express, but if you're eager to get to the parks, it's not necessarily the fastest way to get there. My family flew into SNA last time we went, but it was a fluke since we were supposed to fly into LAX and due to a airplane delay, they put us on an earlier flight to SNA. We had already paid for the Disneyland Express from LAX and transfering to the SNA to DLR instead was no problem. We had our DDs (6 and 3 at the time) and had not brought car seats, so the large Greyhound bus was really our only option, but we did have to wait for the bus to arrive. If it had just been DH and myself, and we were looking for cheap and fast, we would have taken a taxi from SNA. If we were looking for something a little fancier (and pricier) we would have pre-booked a limo. The reviews on Super Shuttle (which I've used many, many times with no problems) are a little iffy lately and I think I'd avoid them if I could (read the last couple of pages on the Airport Proximity to DLR and Ground Transportation Information Super Thread (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2318297) for more information on the Super Shuttle debate).

Thanks for the info, but don't need it anymore. :goodvibes I'm driving down and my sister is flying, didn't think her plane would get in much later than I was arriving, and definitely did not want to go from DL out to SNA on a Friday afternoon in traffic after driving down in the morning. But she got an earlier flight so now I get to pop over to the 405 and pick her up on my way in. Little out of the way, but it won't be that bad. Expo won't be open yet, and unfortunately no DL until after the race:headache: Thanks though!!

I started out good with my training but then I had major family issues and then I got sick so I just got back into it this week. I did 7 miles yesterday with about a 12 minute mile pace. 12 minute miles sounds great to me! Especially after being sick and having family stuff (sorry to hear about that ).

I've been wondering about how early to get there, too. I remember reading to be there at 4:30, but that seems WAY too early for a 6:00 start.

escape
08-12-2010, 02:56 PM
I think we got there about an hour early...and we stood around for a while, if I recall correctly. We had plenty of time for port-a-potty visits as well. I know some people that will probably get there 30 minutes before the race (or later). Do what you are comfortable with, though. If it will help break your "nerves" to get there a little earlier, then do so. You can absorb the "atmosphere" of the race, do some people watching (catch some of the costumes they're wearing) and visit with WISHers or others. You won't be able to miss us WISHers - we'll be in the lime green shirts!

You might consider taking a trash bag to sit on while you wait.

Moto - since this is your first race, try not to worry too much about the race itself - just have fun! Just think of it as another training run with a few thousand friends. :teeth:

we cut it a little close last year. I think we were aiming to be there half an hour early, which is easy because we just walked over from the hotel. But by the time we hit the port-o-potty and made our way through the crowd to our corral they had already started the race! I am aiming to be there closer to an hour early this time, just so I don't feel rushed.

Rupert B Puppenstein

Does anyone know how many people are running in this race? I think it is important to be there as early as possible due to portapotties, etc. It isn't fun sitting around for a while or standing, but at least you get into your corral and focus for a while. At least it won't be cold! :cool1:

I plan to get there by 4:45 a.m. I got to the Disney Princess Half around that time and it was fine except for that it was cold. I use my iPhone for music so I can play scrabble or monopoly for a while! ;)

The past couple of years the # of participants has been right under 10,000. Don't know if they opened more spots b/c of the 5th anniversary though. It sold out early, so I think the number is still around 10,000. 4:45 - 5:00 is good. That's what time I've gotten there in the past and haven't had a problem with the bathrooms. They have a ton in the "waiting area" if that's what you call it. Hopefully we'll have the marine layer again!!

According to the Disney Endurance website, 11,651 people finished the half last year. Don't know how many signed up but didn't run or DNF. I thought the limit was closer to 13,000, which is still a lot less than WDW.

I am planning to get there around 5am, since we are staying at DL Hotel, it won't be a long commute!

I don't think the CoolMax WISH shirt order will be in and shipped out before the Disneyland Half. (I was hoping, but definitely not counting on it!) I do have a plain lime green running shirt, though, and I'm thinking of using fabric markers to decorate the back with a Mickey Head with WISH written in it or just the DIS WISH slogan written on the back. Gotta have some way to identify myself as someone on these boards!

Stephanie, that will work! I wish we had iron-on decals that you could put on a shirt. That would make it a lot easier on new WISHers who can't get an "official" shirt right away.

The first year we ran DL I wore a lime green shirt and made a WISH visor from a lime one I found at WalMart. It identified me as WISH but did not have the risk of ink running when I got sweaty. I thought an iron on design on a shirt would feel too "stiff" to run in. DH will likely be using my homemade visor again as his real one accidentally became throw away clothes during the WDW full.

I picked up some green mickey head paint samples from Home Depot. I have made a Minnie outfit so I'm thinking of glueing them to my bib.

Leaving for DL in two weeks!

Ack! Now I'm worried about ink running down me! Though, I think if I put it on and wash it, anything that's likely to run would be long gone. I may try the fabric markers out on a tech shirt I got at a 5K that's way too small for me and throw it in the wash a couple times to see how it does.

I like the idea of getting a lime green visor, too. Anyone seen any lime green ones around at a chain store recently?

I've got a lime green WISH visor that I never wear if anyone wants to use it. I'm not even sure it has ever been worn but I will make sure it's clean before giving it to you. :teeth:

If anyone is interested, let me know.

Where would I purchase WISH gear? :confused3

I am still trying to decide what to wear. I have never run in a visor but will be trying it this evening because now that I'm putting in more miles I sweat alot (sorry, TMI) and it gets in my eyes.

Also a question for the ladies...do you wear shorts that have the built in undies? I have regular running shorts but my cotton undies aren't cutting it anymore. Again sorry for too much info but I'm pretty new to the whole running/exercising thing and want to be as prepared and comfortable as I can be for this race.

Some stores sell underwear that has a wicking material. I've seen it at the running store near my house, Nike Stores and Sports Basement. The ones I've seen have always been black. You could probably look online and find a pair if there are no stores that carry them around you. I've never worn them so I can't help you with reviews, but I'm sure you can find some somewhere.

This may be TMI, but you asked:rolleyes1 For races, I wear compression shorts with my Race Ready shorts over them. No undies. Too much potential for chafing etc. You may need to try a few scenarios and see what works and what is comfortable for you. On my short runs during the week, I wear the shorts with the built in panty. Again, no issues with chafing or the dreaded runners wedgie:eek:

Good luck to everyone running the half in just 2 short weeks! I'll be in the ChEAR Squad! :cheer2: BF is getting really excited for the race. I soooo wanted to register for the 5k, but our flight doesn't get in until 730p on Friday so I wouldn't have made it to the Expo in time to get race number, etc...earlier flight wasn't possible because of work...work ruins everything!

Hey! Anyone register for the 5k that won't be running it afterall (but can still pick up packet at the Expo) and interested in meeting up friday night and selling off their race number, D-tag and T-shirt? I'm sure it's a long shot, but I had to ask! :flower3:

Leaving for DL in two weeks!

Question- what are the mickey head samples?

I went to Walmart this morning looking for a green hat- no luck. I then went to the Nike Outlet by my house hoping they would have bright green shirts, especially in the men's dept. (Men always get better selections plus it fits better on me) and no luck. Not even colored running hats. BUT!! They did have lime green running windbreaker jackets on sale for $60. They were really nice I got one for January, hopefully that and not a jacket! I figured I could wear that over my stuff in a couple of weeks to keep me warm. I'm still looking though, somebody has to have bright green running shirts somewhere!

Home Depot sells disney paint and the sample colors are mickey head shape. I picked up two different greens to see what might match best.

I know it would/might be too late for some of ya'll but the company we order the cool max WISH shirts from are usually represented at the marathon expo at WDW and might be at the DL expo as well. They usually have the plain bright green shirts that we wear. You might can find a green visor as well. ??? You can also order the plain shirt from the company Internet site. Just a thought.

Thanks for info, I'll look for a hat. :goodvibes I was going through my running shirts this morning trying to organize the drawer, and I found my tech shirt they gave out for the Boston Marathon 5K, and it's bright neon green. It has the BAA logo on front, and '10 5K on the back. Do you guys think that will be okay?

So I stopped by Michael's this morning and got a lime green feather boa type thing, some sheet foam and some pin backings. No idea what I'm doing yet, but I'll play around this weekend. :woohoo:
