Welcome back cruisers

Here's the part 2 thread ready for carryng on where we left off.

Old thread can be found here (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2206751)

So not long to go. Who wants to place a bet on how many pages we fill over the next few days before we cruise? In fact I'll throw in a little treat for whomever guesses closest (to the page number as of when i wake up on Sat 15 May). :hippie:

The next two posts - i'll drop in roll call and FE lists as i won't be able to go back and edit these on the original thread once it is closed (i don't think so anyway).

I had that the other day - although that was because Heath farted really loud while i was playing online with my sister on the playstation - she heard it through the headsets and over the loud game music. :rotfl:

I honestly thought i was going to die because i couldn't breathe because i was laughing so hard (not because of the noxious gas) :lmao:.

I wanted to repeat a previous post from the board before it moved. My TA got us a rate of 1.28 and with fees it was I believe 1.31 or 1.32. It definately appears that the euro is tanking quickly and I am going to wait until Sunday night but if it continues to drop then I may pick up more. Everyone... Shop around and speak with your TA's about their rates b/c it seems people are all across the board on this one.

I am officially going to guess 30 pages on the board finale Mr. Barker.:rotfl:

Your TA got you the actual current rate plus fees. I just got .7757 Euro to the dollar here in Belgium, so my that is about 1.29 rate. The bank here at SHAPE has an agreement not to charge us a fee for the exchange so we get actual rate at the specific moment. If I went right now I would get .78494.

I just hope it keeps changing for the good so when I cash my check next week for the trip I get a really good rate.

Hello LIVE from the May 5th cruise! We're having a great time. It is chilly though. Didn't stop my daughter or most other kids from swimming, but the adult pool is EMPTY.

Safety drill was shortly after 4pm on the 5th. Sail away party was at 4:30, though we didn't actually pull out until about 9:30. First night was Let the Magic Begin menu and the All Aboard, Let the Magic Begin show. Tonight is Prince and Princess formal night and Twice Charmed. Tea with Alice and the Mad Hatter on either sea day, as well as character breakfast on one of the sea days. Um...any questions? We'll try to leave her in good shape for you!

In terms of the Colosseum tickets:

From looking at train schedules: there is a 7:59 and than an 8:40 and with approx. all ashore at 7:45 it ended up at 8 for the last Med crusie I would plain the 8:40 train it gets in at 9:50 and then all you have to do is hop on the metro and go to the Colosseum (metro stop is real close to it)...I would get tickets for 10:30 or 11 based on your options

Do you know what time your boarding actually started? Were Palo ressies open immediately on boarding or was there a delay til 1pm?
(I've seen different reports on what is happening)

Fingers crossed it warms up for you. :wizard:

Im sure we didn't have to select a time when i booked ours???

Am at work so can't check. Can anyone else confirm if a time had to be selected? (I know we did for the tickets to climb the Leaning Tower pf Pisa)

You are correct, if you buy the Colosseum tickets through the official site it was a 2 day ticket. Are you trying to buy the guided tour ticket instead of the regular just admission ticket?

I was starting to get worried that i wasn't going to be able to buy all of the Disney merchandise that i was planning on buying (and that's a lot!). :rotfl:

That is weird. I called two local AAA offices and they only sell tip packs (prepackage Euros) in $100 or $250 with and exchange rate of 1.5625. :sad2:
It is based on what they paid for them when they bought the euros.

Different AAA apparently do things differently. Here in Huntsville, they order the Euro (2 business day turnaround) so they don't keep them in the office as a commodity.

There is nothing to indicate any cause for concern about travelling in the area around Tunis beyond the precautions one would take travelling anywhere. I've looked long and hard before signing up for our 4x4 Jeep excursion out into the countryside. Your daughters will be fine. When on a Disney cruise tour there will be LOTS of fellow cruisers AND several castmembers around at all times.

The zip line park is about a 45 minute drive from Ajaccio and opens at 10:00. I know at least 3 drivers are sharing a cab to airport to pick up cars. I don't know if any will have space or not. Cars run around $120 so I would say $30plus gas money would be transpo cost. Park I think is 10 euros. Expect to stay 1.5 to 2.0 hours. Some drivers may come straight back to town and then drive along coastal road in afternoon. Others may stay near zip lines and go to the tortoise sanctuary.

As far as zip lining goes there are more things than zip lines. Think rope trails through the tree tops. Here is the website again with lots of great pictures. http://www.revesdecimes.fr/ Maybe your cousin would like to come just to document your death defying feats for the family history books.

I thought the LDSsinglegirls had disappeared! Do you have a link for the train?

This is the only train schedule site for Corsica I know of.

http://www.corsicabus.org/Train_services.html

The times in pink DF are the Sunday trains.

Looks like you would catch the number 5 train at 8:00. The closest city to Vero is Carbuccia. Arrives at 8:26. Then you would have to find a way to get to Vero. Return train is the number 6 and leaves Carbuccia at 12:44. That is the only train leaving Ajaccio in the morning. You could travel as far as Corte look around for an hour and come back.

It is possible I guess but what happens if you miss the one train returning?

The other Adventure park in Vizzavona I haven't looked at much because the train arrives at 9:08 and departs at 12:07. Since I was to nervous to depend on one train each direction I decided to rent car and go to the closer park.

I fumbled on the website for quite a while and ended up finding some information. There are 12 different courses and 4 different levels. The cost for a 4 hour adventure is 20 euro. I, like you, found the trains to be not so reliable. We would have to rent a car. The closer park might be the route we take.

Looks similar. The one in Vero has 13 courses and costs 20 euros for up to 4 hours. Groups of 6 or more get a 2 euro discount. Looks like less than $25 for 4 hours. The cruise ship excursions usually only stayed for 2 hours so not sure if people will be interested in a whole 4 hours.

Jane, are the shampoo and conditioner good quality? I may forgo bringing my own and save the room. Anne

They are H20 products. I haven't used the shampoo and conditioner but I LOVE the rest of their stuff.

Jill

I really like them - i get quite greasy hair whihc means i wash my hair every day - I find they are one of the few that don't make it worse.

I also love the way the Shampoo and moisturiser smell, and for me its "DCL smell" hence why i'm using htese ones now - get me in the mood.

I say we will end of at 47 pages.

In 5 days our family (along with Travelbee) will be flying to London. It will be my family's first time there and we are just so excited. Any recommendations from the locals on must sees or dos? Any good places for the kids? Will only be there 2 days but looking forward to the visit.

Oh 1 more thing. I really enjoy Indian food and heard London has some of the best Indian restaurants. Any recommendations?

Thanks much :goodvibes

Answers to your Q's are in red Charlotte...

There will be with me lol!!
your suggestion of around 10 pm is good. I think the Promenade Lounge is a good place because there's more seating there than anywhere else.

Hi All its Me again!!!!! Its the middle of the night but just cant sleep (am watching to see who gets in goverment but really day dreaming about the cruise)
1. Can i ask yet more question!!!! We dont really want to take a buggy although will need one if / when we get off so i know they have a limited amount do you think they will be all gone as we will be one of the last to board (if we get there in time ahhhhhhhhh)

Can't answer this one sorry - I'd imagine you'd be ok. Call DCL and ask what they think.

2.If we do get off at ports can we take there tales or should i bring our own!

If you mean towels ;) then you can take DCL towels - pick them up by the pool - just make sure you bring them back to the ship.

3. Instead of a pillow case to ask the characters to sign could i bring a photo frame and where do i go to get that sorted!!

They're happy to do that - take it to Guest Services. You need to put it in a bag with pens for the characters to use and most people put in a bag of candy for the characters to share. That's the real reason Mickey has a little bit of a pot belly :rotfl2:

4. Does it show on our tickets when our dinner time is (i called iglu who said they dont know when it is but have sent disney an email to request early) Why is it everyone else knows!!!

It will show your dining rotation online if you log into your reservation on DCL site. It also says on your KTTW card you'll get when you check in at port. Times are 6pm for early seating 8.30pm for late. Your KTTW card will also show you whihc restaurant you are in each night (A= Animator's, P=Parrots Cay and L = Lumieres)

5. Am thinking of booking teeth whitening treatment (brits arent renoned for great teeth lol) but dont want to decide on a time now as hate to book when doing something with my bubs!! soooo do you think i could book on board!

Don't know if they do it - check out the Spa treatmets section on hte DCL website is my best advice - or maybe someone else knows.
6. Have had another idea for my Fe gifts but not sure if its allowed... can i bring flower seeds or is that a food substance dont really no much about customs!!!!

Seeds will be a big no no Customs for most cruisers going home will confiscate them and some penalties for bringing in fruit related items like seeds are pretty harsh (big $). I'm not sure you are supposed to take them into Spain either.

7.My daughter wants to bring all (16) disney fancy dresses but really dont have the room do the have ones there for her to wear or hire!!

AFAIK there's nowhere to hire the dresses. I think you can buy them but it sounds like you don't need any more if she already has 16 :scared1:

emmmmmmmmm thinks that it for a few hours lol !!!Thankyou in advance for your help

They're kind of like Gummi Bears but slightly bigger.

They are gummy on the inside with a slightly harder outside and are shaped a little like babies. They also have a powdery sugar coating.

If you'd like to try some i can bring a bag along next week.

Absolutely. The people aren't going to give up their 14 months pay for 12 months worth of work/year. How Draconian that the government even ask?

What is the consensus on whether to take original passports or copies into the ports? I did hear on the DIS podcast for Tunisia that you had to have the original with you. Also, for anyone who knows do they require proof of identification when using credit cards- therefore bring along DL, state ID, etc.?

Hi Helen, I am not a local but I do love London! My suggestion that I would not miss out on is the Tower bridge/London Tower. The tours are incredible! All the guides are dressed in period clothing (beefeater gaurds) and tell the most fascinating tales and participate in reinactments. My wife likes the part with the Crown Jewels on display :thumbsup2 (wonder why LOL)

One more thing your children might enjoy in the London Eye. It gives you a panoramic view of the city. It is also close to Big Ben and Parliment (suddenly getting Chevy Chase flashbacks :rotfl2:). I envy you guys! London is one of my favorite cities!!!

As far as Indian food we ate at the BALI house near Victoria station and it was pretty decent but nothing to write home about.

Neither of us get sea sick but we talked with several people who swear by the patches. The ginger pills are excellent anti-emetics but if you can find candied ginger in a local whole foods store they taste great and are quickly and easily digested (for those sudden onsets of sickness). :thumbsup2

I was going to bet 98 pages, but some of you folks are leaving early...so I'm guessing 78! But you guys that are traveling to Barcelona early just have to post to let the rest of us know how the city it, how the fountain was and what the temp is. It all so exciting!:yay:

Ginger is a real good option for the younger kids. Remember patches are time release so be sure to get them on when prescribed to start prior to actual travel. I too have heard from people who swear by them and others who swear at them, it is dosage and personal reaction to the active ingredient that will dictate success.

We bring Dramamine and Ginger, if real bad seas are predicted we take as a precaution even though we have never experienced sea sickness. If someone starts to feel queasy we do some ginger.

Brick Lane, near Liverpool Street tube station, has a lot of Indian restaurants. However, if you're *really* serious about wanting a good curry, then there are two places you can go - New Tayyabs and the Lahore Kebab House. They're a bit further out from the station (closer to Aldgate East, I think) but they're the best curries I've ever had. More details here:

Charlotte you crack me up!:rotfl2: Don't worry about being the last on the ship, my flight doesn't get into Barcelone airport until 130PM.
As long as you fill out the online checkin before leaving, Disney will know when you are arriving and I'm sure they will have transportation (if that's what you've purchase, we bought the Disney transfers).
It will say on your KTTW card when your diner seating is and which dinning room you'll be in by th letter. L for Lumier's, A for animators palate, and P for Parrot Kay.
What's a "tales"?
If you check the spa treatments online you can find out if they offer teeth whightening, I don't recall that they offer it. But you can check.

Charlotte, last year we did a 7 day cruise and spent 3 days in Disneyworld before hand. I wore the patch for a total of 11 days and I had no problem. I can get very sea sick, I joke that I get sea sick in the bath tub. The patch is the only thing that works for me, I've tries everything else! I just picked up 5 patches from my doctor, since you have to change the patch every 3 days, she never advised me against a longer trip. You'll know it's me by the tan patch behind my ear!:rotfl2:

Do you know what time your boarding actually started? Were Palo ressies open immediately on boarding or was there a delay til 1pm?
(I've seen different reports on what is happening)

Sorry, we dropped our luggage off at 10:30 and then went back to see more of the city and do the Aquarium, so I'm not sure when boarding actually began. They did have a Flamenco dancer and guitar player to entertain, as well as some characters, in the boarding area. There were definitely Palo reservations available, including for brunch, b/c our tablemates booked it when they got onboard.

Malta is much better weather. You can definitely swim in this. The TV said the Mickey pool temp was 90.8 F, which is plenty warm enough for even me.

Oh, and contrary to what I was told when I called DCL, you CAN order the 7 night wine package. That's what we did our first night at dinner, at our server's suggestion.

They have a decent selection of Med DCL merchandise and seem to be getting more when they get into Barcelona. For example, one style of kids shirt they only got the box of larger sizes and no smaller ones. They have hoodies, mugs, magnets, spoons, photo albums, scrapbooks and scrapbooking kits, pins, postcards, etc. Plus the Dooney bags. Already bought one of those!

Lots of spa specials onboard. They are promoting a mother's day special elemis facial and massage for a total of 110 minutes for $239, including Rainforest room. Today's is a 75 minute special with a 50 minute massage and 25 minute facial, rainforest pass and glass of champagne for $149.

Tonight's entertainment is Phil Keller for families and Paul Zerdin, ventriloquist for adults.

They had a Princess gathering in the lobby yesterday and will do it again on the last at sea day. Last night, they had Pluto's PJ party in the Kids' Club, which my daughter loved. They made special pillowcases and Pluto showed up and played with them. Earlier, she'd made a Peter Pan hat with the help of Peter Pan. She's a happy, happy girl!

To quote multiple posts, hit the quote marks + icon on the lower right of the posts you want to quote. It'll turn orange and have a - sign. On the last post you want to quote, hit the regular "quote" button and it will bring up all the posts you marked.

I'm giving it a try right now! Thanks, Anne

To the right of the "Quote" button on each post is a button that looks like a piece of paper with "+ (quote sign and plus sign). Click on that button on each of the posts you want to reply to, then either hit "Quote" on one of those posts, or hit the "Post Reply" button. You'll get quotes for each post you mark. Put your comments after each tag. This works even across pages (if you want to quote one post on Page 2 & one on Page 3, it remembers them). I really like this feature. I'm not sure how long it's been there, I just noticed it a couple of weeks ago.

This is alot better! Thanks!!:)

Tinker myself and my gd Deidra (21)will be doing this pottery trip, so we would be more that happy to have the added company. just let me know. pooh:)

Finally seasickness has anyone ever tried the patches that you put behind your ear if so do they work?I am generally OK on cruiseships, but have problems getting seasick on smaller boats. Back in Sept, for my Alaska trip, my doctor prescribed me the patch for a small ship tour we were taking. I put it on the night before the tour, and kept it on for about a day & a half. No problems whatsoever, and absolutely no seasickness. I have heard that most people who do have problems with the patch have it if they use it long term (longer than 3 days). So I can't help you with the long term part, but short term? Fabulous!

Also, you have to be REALLY careful when you put them on that you don't touch the active (sticky) part of the patch. If you do, you'll absorb it through your fingers, and be more likely to have the side effects like sleepyness.

Thanks Jeff I'll put these dates in my diary, can you put the info on the website.

I have tried all of them... pills, patches, perscriptions, I have found Motion EZE is the best. I bought it on line... it is natural and smells like pepermint and wintergreen. one small drop behind each ear and all is good for several hours. :)

I know a lot of you are discussing anti-seasickness rememdies but I found this for preventing jet lag.

http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=79281&catid=1192

I bought some and will be trying it out. My dbf used it on his trip to Palau and said it helped.

I stop reading when I see "homeopathic", which equals placebo.

Thanks pooh. Our daughters Kate and Mary (26 & 21) will be going. It will be nice to have someone near their age also. One note, I wrote someone who went on the 4/24 cruise that went to the pottery excursion and they said you are only there for one hour or so and then they take you to a shopping area where they were extremly pressured and everyone left after 15 mins.

Oh 1 more thing. I really enjoy Indian food and heard London has some of the best Indian restaurants. Any recommendations?

When we went to London last year with Adventures by Disney's Knights and Lights we went to a restaurant called Sitaaray, 167 Drury Lane, Covent Garden, London WC2B5PG, 44-0207-269-6422.

It definitely has a Bollywood theme -- in fact they show snippets of Bollywood films during the meal on the wall -- but we had a lot of fun, the food was delicious and as much as you can eat and we would definitely go back again.

As far as things to do in London we had one extra day and ended up spending the entire day in the British Museum. And we could spend a couple more and still not see it all. It is spectacular.

What is the consensus on whether to take original passports or copies into the ports? I did hear on the DIS podcast for Tunisia that you had to have the original with you. Also, for anyone who knows do they require proof of identification when using credit cards- therefore bring along DL, state ID, etc.?

Thread page guess - 75

Retail stores in Spain have been checking my ID pretty consistently when using credit cards. Restaurants have not. But, if you've got your passport, that should be good enough ID for a credit card verification.

What I don't understand is what I'm supposed to do with my passport when I go to the beach.

My guess is 71 pages.

Here is what DCL says:

Leave passports, air transportation tickets and cruise documents in the safety deposit box of your stateroom. You do not need your travel documents while visiting Tunis.

We've never taken our Passports out of the safe while onboard. We do keep copies of our PP with us though and also have picture ID (DL) with us at all times.

Oh, and contrary to what I was told when I called DCL, you CAN order the 7 night wine package. That's what we did our first night at dinner, at our server's suggestion.

Jan (Ebony) - We're on the same BA flight from Heathrow to Barcelona! I read an article today that said the earliest strike date is now May 17. That'd affect our flight home but DH's response was "Could you really mind if we HAVE to spend a few extra days in Barcelona?"

That is the earliest they can strike. I know of someone who is cabin crew (a non striker) and she has said that. Also last time no flights from London Gatwick were cancelled. She also said that BA have been training up more staff to cover striking cabin crew, so there should not be as many cancellations as the last time.

Hi I love the h2o products and I'm normally quite fussy about my conditioner

I found these products fine on our last cruise, so am not packing shampoo or conditioner. Hope they give out more than 1 tube of each per cabin. :) They do not provide shower gel only soap

Finally seasickness has anyone ever tried the patches that you put behind your ear if so do they work?

Hi there i went to my doc today and asked about the patches ( i WILL be the lady being constantly sick:sick: and green:sick: throughtout the cruise:eek: lol) He said they work well for a single trip but not for prolonged times!!!!! so he gave me PROMETHAZINE TEOCLATE :confused3tablets to take 3 times a day!!!!!!!!! Also said the jabs on board would be a good idea!! Any one know how much they are???
Unfortunatley he couldnt give me anything for my children (d/d 4 has just started to become quite travel sick) not sure how d/s 2 will be lets hope they havent inhertited my week system! Hubby should be ok ! ;)

We took bonine tablets on our last cruise and we were both fine. So that is what we are taking again. Whatever you take, they do suggest you do a trial run first, to make sure that there are no side effects. Wouldnt want to be poorly on the cruise.

Because I grew up in Baltimore, MD and it is going to be a huge disapointment after all the other travels you have done. :lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

Hey everyone! We just got back last night from Germany. Our flight was quite delayed because we had to take the southern route over Spain and Portugal (and then back up over Nova Scotia) because of the ash clouds.

I haven't unpacked yet, but I'm still on Europe time, so I'm up trying to get organized for Wednesday's flight back over there. The weather in Germany was dreary all but the first day I arrived, but it was a wonderful trip. I even packed an emergency cruise bag in case we got stuck over there because of the delightful volcano. We really contemplated staying when it started blowing again.

Now, it's time to sort laundry, drycleaning, figure out what needs to stay in the bag, toiletries that need to be replenished, etc.

We would love to meet everyone at the fountains on Friday night. Looks like 8:30 or so?

I feel very lost right now as I haven't had much time to plan for Barcelona. I know we will do the HOHO bus and plan a trip to Montserrat, but not sure which days what. We will have a couple of days on the return as well.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi to everyone as we begin the countdown!

For info - 15 airports in Spain have been closed today due to the volcano

Doesn't include Barcelona but isn't too far away.

Looks like they're due to reopen later today but worth keeping an eye on.

Well, it's rain in east tn so it looks like we r going to........ PACK!:yay: I have my iPad out and packing list ready. We leave on Wednesday from Atlanta and arrive in Barcelona Thursday morning. Anyone else on the flight? We have a 5 hr layover in Atl so downloading things for kids on iPad. One important thing for everyone staying a few days in Barcelona needs to pack is outlet converter. Cruise ship is okay if your on the left side of the pond but hotels aren't. For those out there actually listening to your local dermatologists, remember to pack sunblock that is an SPF of 30( any higher isn't necessarily better) and look for the ingredients zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide and you will be good to go. True BLOCKS will contain one or both ingredients and are infinitely better than screens. Hint.... They will not come in sprays and they are thicker to rub in.
Question to the travel pros.... Can my wife wear sandals in the cathedrals and Vatican?
Holy GI ulcer batman! We leave in 5 days!

What - no sandals! Say it ain't so...great question though considering that's mostly what I have packed and it would damper plans considerably.

Crummy, wet and windy here which reminded me to pack a couple more sweaters and another pair of jeans. And I was so proud that I hadn't even come near the weight limit. It's the last minute things that always get you!

Checked the weather for Barcelona on the 15th and now they're predicting showers all day - mid 60's.

We have our sunscreen packed!! Hoping that we will need it, it's sunny here in Nova Scotia today but rain is on the way. We started packing yesterday and hope to finish up today. I'm having too many dreams where I only have 2 hours to pack and I can't get it all done. We are leaving on Wednesday night and spending 1 night in Paris before flying in to Barcelona on Friday. We are super excited!!! I just wish that ash cloud would settle back down! I don't want to have to worry about it. We are flying with Air France.

We will be on this flight. We are getting into JFK around 11:00 coming from Orlando FL. It will be a very LONG layover, but the flights were alot cheaper that way. I will have lots of time to reread my Rick Steves books ;)

We have about 4 hours at JFK. Perhaps I need to put some games on my new iPhone. :)

Hi All,

Two Questions:

I am soooo looking forward to this cruise but dreading the long flight over. I hear rumors that crossing the Atlantic is quite turbulent. True or untrue?

Secondly, I have a very nagging feeling that I am forgetting to pack something. So what useful thing did you remember to pack that others (like me) have probably forgotten? I have the extension cord, noisemaker, camera & phone chargers, hangers, nightlight...........

:confused3

Untrue. No worse going over the Atlantic than flying anywhere else. Perhaps some people become hyper-sensitive to it because they're over open water.

On packing, don't forget the link for the DIS packing list HERE (http://5-15-10-medcruisers.weebly.com/packing-list.html). (website under "Links")

We would love to meet everyone at the fountains on Friday night. Looks like 8:30 or so?

Correct. We will have our lanyards on and I think I'll know many folks from their Roll Call photos. We'll be on the Espanya side of the fountain.

Sandals are fine. Just be aware of the other rules about covered shoulders and knees.

Finally seasickness has anyone ever tried the patches that you put behind your ear if so do they work?

My mom feel sick on every cruise, so she tried Dramamine, Bonine, Gravol (here in Canada), the patch. She also were the bracelet.
For her, the patch was not OK, afer 24 hour of having it, she was green and was sick, she remove the patch and was OK after that. Now after 12 cruise, sge prefered non-drowsy Dramamine.

So if you decide to get the patch, try it before leaving

Funny! We had a wonderful time anyway, and my husband was there for the glorious first week! We were actually not far from your home-we were in Schwabisch Hall. We celebrated Maifest with business associates in their tiny village of Enslingen. What an amazing experience.

We're considering liveblogging the cruise.

http://vagabondsforbeauty.com

If any veteran bloggers have tips, feel free to PM me.

In case there are others considering doing this as well, here are some tips.

In terms of blogging live from the cruise, the biggest tip I can give anyone, if you're planning to include photos in your blog, is to either reduce the photo size in the menu of your camera to its lowest setting *or* download them to a computer (if you have a laptop) and use whatever software you have to resize them to 100 Kb or less. The internet connection on the ship is typically painfully slow and can be intermittent. People, not knowing, will try to upload 3-5-10 Mb photos and after 20 minutes of grinding (and using your minutes), you'll get a message back that the upload failed.

The 2nd tip is do as much as you can offline.

The 3rd tip has to do with the way they have the Magic internet set up. You have to connect *and* disconnect every time. Closing your browser and even shutting down your computer doesn't necessarily disconnect you. you must consciously go through the process of disconnecting; otherwise, your minutes will rapidly evaporate.

Currency Conversion question:

If I walk into a bank in Barcelona, which I am assuming will give me the best rate, can I convert $1000-$2000 US dollars for Euros without having an account at the bank? What fees will the bank charge to convert the currency? (I am assuming that banks in Spain are like banks in the U.S.--they do nothing without a fee attached.)

Thanks in advance for any info.

I *HATE* packing, I *HATE* airlines, but I *LOVE* traveling, so I guess the first 2 are necessary evils... :confused3

One week from right about now, we'll be settling in for our first meal together on the Magic. I am *SO* looking forward to getting to know all the wonderful folks I've met here on the DIS. I can hardly believe it's less than a week away! :yay:

I feel like I've made way too little plans for the day in Barcelona, but I have no idea what condition I'll be in, arriving that day, so I'm just playing it loose. Heaven knows the next several days will be FULL of things to see & do, so if I don't see tons of stuff in Barcelona, I think I'll be OK. :)

La Caixa bank operates in the T1 and T2 terminals of the Barcelona airport. On the Barcelona Tourist site they say they don't charge commissions but also don't list their rates.

Latest from Iberia's website:

According to the latest news from Eurocontrol (http://www.eurocontrol.int/) and the civil aviation authorities, most of the airports closed today in Northern Spain will reopen between tonight and tomorrow early morning.
The airports of Galicia – Santiago, Vigo and Coruρa – will remain closed at least until tomorrow at 11 am; they could remain closed longer, depending on the evolution of the volcanic cloud.
Authorities are informing that the volcanic ash cloud could affect some airports in France, Italy and Switzerland tomorrow, although this information has not been yet confirmed.
Iberia is going to operate bigger aircraft to the airports that have been closed today in order to carry as many passengers as possible.

I actually just started a blog today on Wordpress. The reason why I picked Wordpress was because I was able to download the app to my blackberry. I am going to pay the 64.99 (which wil really end up being about half because I will only have it for 2 weeks) to add the international email and internet to my Verizon account. This way I can just type everything once and not have to repeat myself to multiple family members and friends.

Sounds like you can't use blogspot, which is a bummer because that's why my blog is on. I can also blog using weebly, which is what the cruise web site is hosted on. Kaleigh from the 5/5 cruise, who did their web site is blogging on weebly. You might give it a try...you can set up a web page and blog for free and the tools on it make it really easy.

Two things that I can think of. Blogspot has an option where you can post via email. That would certainly be the simplest, but you'd have to keep your format simple.

Another is setting up a proxy, so you connect to the proxy and the proxy connects to blogspot. That'll fool most blocks. We had to do that for one of our banks so we could access it while traveling, as it wouldn't allow connections outside of the USA.

All these volcano disruptions are so stressful. We leave Tuesday night for London and then Friday evening to Barcelona. Praying that all the airports will be open so we can all have a wonderful time on the Magic.

Good night to all and happy mother's day to all you moms.

Happy Mother's Day to all our American cruisers (we already had our mother's day back in March in the UK)

For those travelling early - good luck getting all your flights over here - transatlantics to Northern Europe (UK/France/Germany) and European flights into Spain all seem to be disrupted (mostly really long delays rather than cancelled). Hope everyone who is travelling in the next few days has safe and smooth travels.

This time next week i'm hoping ot be stuffing myself silly at Palo (hoping for the brunch ressie for 1st sea day) popcorn::

Hope i'm not being cheeky!! But would you by any chance have enough to do a small one for me as well. Could not find any magnetic paper :sad1: No problem. I got your email. I'll print it off tonight and find you onboard to give to you. :)

For those obsessing about the volcano (like me!), here's a link to follow European airport closures and delays that Steven3367 posted on another thread. Thanks Steven! Airport closure map (http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/04/15/world/europe/airport-closings-graphic.html)

I'd be happy to do it. We've got 4-5 packs of the magnetic paper. What would you like?

That's the link I had on our website. It's still not updated. It shows last update was back in April after the first big eruption. Our flight AA 152 out of JFK made it yesterday but it was almost 4 hours late into BCN. I'd take that.

And Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there.party::dogdance::flower1::flower1::flower1:

I just received this email that I thought others might find interesting. It is a virtual tour of the Vatican.

INSTRUCTIONS: After you link on the site below and select an image and it appears, then HOLD DOWN THE LEFT MOUSE BUTTON AND SLOWLY MOVE THE CURSOR AROUND THE ROOM, YOU CAN ALSO MOVE THE CURSOR DOWNWARD TO CHECK OUT THE CEILINGS AND UPWARD TO SEE THE FLOOR AREAS

Did you book your airfare with Disney? If you did, then it's up to them to work it out. I'd be giving them a call to see what their contingency plan is!

Sayhello

I did book through Disney, I think I'll take your advice and give them an early call.

Some good news on airspace.

UK flights to Barcelona have been flying today - most seem to have been up to an hour late but have been running.

Fingers crossed it keeps improving

Another is setting up a proxy, so you connect to the proxy and the proxy connects to blogspot. That'll fool most blocks. We had to do that for one of our banks so we could access it while traveling, as it wouldn't allow connections outside of the USA.

Set up the proxy and tried logging in to my blogspot dashboard and it gives me an error "Method Not Allowed". :sad1:

Have just checked the EasyJet website and they have cancelled loads of flights to Barcelona....am starting to panic now. DH is already thinking of driving down there instead!! Going to have to play it day by day i think

That's very strange - BA and Iberia have flown all of their flights to and from Barcelona today (at most 1 hour late). Ryanair cancelled one from around lunchtime but one about an hour ago left on time. (edit - i've only looked at from UK to Barcelona)

Easyjet may just be suffering a backlog from yesterday and will be back to normal tomorrow.

Fingers crossed for all of us.

If you have any left, we couldn't find any magnetic paper either. We are not picky and would happily accept any design that you see fit. If not, no worries, we were just going to decorate our door with WDW magnets.

So, do you want the mickey ears as shown HERE (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2172891)? If so, which one?
