Jim - I hope the move went well at DW's business, and I hope the back is feeling better.

Bookwood & Carrie - Goodluck at the Flying Pig. I hope you are able to stay dry. The weather doesn't look promising for tomorrow.

Stan - Congratulation on the PR.

Kathy - Congratulation on the new adoptive granddaughter. Watching little ones can wear anyone out.

Thinks have been going pretty well training wise for me. I got a new toy in the mail Wednesday. I bought a Garmin 305. I think it is really going to help with my training. I wore it Wednesday for my 4 1/2 mile walk and then on Friday for my 8 mile long walk. I was able to average a 16:02 mile for my 8 mile walk which is real close to the pace I would like to maintain at the half. I even included a hill again this week. The only down side is I developed a couple of blisters. They both occurred on the edge of where I had placed my moleskin's. I may need to use a bigger piece so it is less likely to shift as I walk.

Life around the house has been hectic. Last Wednesday, mom went into the hospital with an infection and being worn down and last Saturday we transferred her to a nursing home to build her strength back up. She had a stroke about a year and half ago and suffers from moderate Alzheimer. So, I've been trying to get out to the nursing home when I can. She is improving and hopefully will be able to get home soon.

Happy Saturday Warriors!!!

I went for a 50 (ok, ok, actually 49.4) mile bike ride this morning. I was feeling very puffy & full of myself, when, as I was heading back into town, I noticed another cyclist about 1/2 mile ahead of me.

I saw he was not going as fast as I, so I tried to catch up to him. As I closed on him I noticed his bike was loaded down with cruising packs on his rear rack (so I had BETTER be going faster than him !!! ). I caught up with him after a few minutes and we began to talk a bit as the high speed traffic repeatedly tried to kill me.

So I asked where he was coming from. His answer? "San Diego"............... wha..........?? 2200 freakin' miles?? He said he was with his DW and a few others (but had decided to come into St Augustine a day early), had been pedaling for 2 months, and had (now get this..............) already put in about 62 miles so far today (& had about 10 to go......).

And did I mention this guy was about 15 years OLDER than I???? Really nice guy. I gave him directions & warned him about the area drivers that have NO respect for cyclists & left him for the rest of my ride.

I REALLY have a lot of work to do............................. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Finally went out for a walk. My DH and I did 3.22 miles. :cool1:
The last time I walked it was on April 4th for 8 miles. The spinning on the exerciser did help.

Jim: Great story and thanks for sharing it. Kinda puts things in perspective right? Especially how our own worlds can have their own perspectives. Cool that this guy was traveling by bike, very neat - but remember he was cruising and relaxing (a bit) and seeing the sites. You had a different purpose in mind and most likely doing it for speed and miles. Hope you back is doing well.

Jeremy: I love my Garmin, I have a 405. My training became so much more consistant and better after I got one. I am sure you will find it to be a good training partner and friend. I love my "garmi". Blisters will happen and I am sure you starting to realize this to be true. The more miles and time you spend in your shoes, blister can "pop up" :lmao:. Yes, moleskin helps and have you tried lathering with body glide. Hopefully you are not wearing cotton socks as cotton typically = blisters and or chaffing. Sorry to hear about your Mother's health and I hope it gets better.

Kathy: I am sure it felt good to get out there again

FLYING PIG PEOPLE!!! - hoping you had a great race and tell us all about it! :cheer2:

AFM: got up and out the door pretty early around 7am. 6 miles for today. Summer has pretty much arrived and the humidity and heat are ramping up so that means trying to get out there before the sun gets too high in the sky.
Been purging myself of some bad things in my life but keeping up with my miles and days. Right now I am not really suffering from any bad aches or pains and for that I am truely greatful. I will start to ramp up miles soon as the Disneyland Half Marathon gets closer.

No, I'm not wearing cotton socks. I was using Sports Wax with cheap Wal-Mart wicking socks. I'm now using DryMax Socks. They recommend not using any sort of body glide, power type thing with the socks. I may experiment with using both this week. I just don't have that many training day left to do much experimenting and none of them are long distances. Mom is continuing to improve, albeit slowly. Don't know if she'll get home this week or not.

Hi Warriors! Another weekend another half. Got the Columbus Distance Half done on Saturday. It was a warmer, rainy kind of event. Not bad, just playing in the puddles.

Jim, my wha a story. It is amazing that someone would take a trip like that.

Sorry for the drivers who just insist on playing chicken with the bicycles. Happens all around here and drivers insist that bikes belong on sidewalks even that it is against the law here to be on the sidewalk riding your bike.

Hope everyone is doing well with getting steps and moving around.

Tracy, with the heat season coming, I guess this would be your off time for training. Good luck finding cool time. Good for you purging the bad and moving forward with the good. Glad you can keep moving along for yourself.

Hi Warriors!!!!

I too was in the wet and humid Columbus Half. While it wasn't my best time due to conditions and not doing my normal training I had a really good time. I got to see Lily and chat for a few and that made my day!! Haven't run since Saturday, but did get in 3.5 miles of walking yesterday. Getting back after it today I hope.

Tracy: Stay cool out there - I never understand how people in hot climates train through the hot summer! Even in Seattle, I melt if I run after 9:00 in the summer, and it rarely gets above 75 here!

Jim: That is a great story!

As for me, I'm actually RUNNING again! I finally broke down and bought a maternity running skirt from runningskirts.com. In addition to being ADORABLE, it also has a supportive belly band that has completely eliminated my back and belly pain while running. I ran about 4 of my 6 miles on Saturday and I had no back pain at all, afterwards! It's such a great feeling. I've been wearing it for pretty much everything, now, including my short walks with the dogs, and it's made such a difference. Too bad they only make it in two colors, or else I would have a new running skirt collection... :rolleyes1

I have my 10 miler coming up on Saturday, so we'll see how that one goes...

Jeremy - Congrats on teh Garmin! it will be your new best friend! Is there somethign in your shoe rubbing? Can you see any worn spots on the insole? If so, I have a product I foudn that may help. Let em know. So sorry about your mom. It was hard enough for em to deal with a grandmaother with az. :-( I can't imagine.

Kathy - COngrats on getting out again! Can't wait to hear about your first visit with your new granddaughter!

Jim - When I reconnected with my old roommmate, she sent me a messgae to kept up. Told me about runnign a 5K. I skimmed after that, as my head was already writing a reply. Told her about my marathons and how she should try a half and such. WIsh I had read mor futher. She was a 4-time IM at the time. :rolleyes1 Ooops. Don't ya' love those puffed up moments? :p Can't imagine riding 2200 miles. :scared1: BTW - I think your 50-miler was awesome! You can be puffed up with me! ;)

Tracy - Glad you will have a race on your schedule! I dont' have another scheduled until the end of June and feel lost now. :guilty:

Got to see Pam and Barb at Flying Pig! Short visit, but great to see them! Also got some quality time with aladdinsgirl adn skfulkers fro those that may remember them. Wonderful! Pi was HILLY and WET. There was a flash to bang with less than 5 secods 15 min before the race. I was just sure it was going to be canceled. I was also sure it was because I bought a finisher's hat at the expo. :scared1: The announced that they were workign with the NWS asn police and fire, though, adn it was just "random strikes" :scared1: and the race would go on. Luckily, that was teh last of the lightning. It was not the last of teh rain, though.

Beautiful course. Really good support ont he course, even in the rain, great friends and my body did ok. I realized a few days before the race that, although I had been doing great witht eh swim and teh ride, I had not run sinc ea half 3 weeks before. :headache: I *almost* wish I had not done as well as I did for Pig so I would have learned a lesson. :upsidedow Need to do better now. Time to really focus on tri season coming. Yay!

PS - Tracy had a great idea to keep track of everyone's races fro teh month so we can virtually cheer fro our Warrior friends racing.

Good Afternoon Warriors!!!

I dragged my slow lazy a** to the pool this morning & did a 1,000 meter sprint workout. Boy, I REALLY get gassed in the pool!! I worked so hard that I was actually sweating after a pool workout. Hopefully it will pay off in the long run.

I then did a 21 mile bike ride afterwards. I had to cut it short because, in a fit of terrible motor skills, I fumbled a water bottle & it slid down a storm drain. Half my fluids gone in a second.

Plus, it was windy. And HOT. And did I mention it was Windy & HOT!!??

Rain is due this afternoon. Maybe if it gets a bit cooler I may try a small run this evening.

FYI - No races this month. It's basically 5k & Tri season in Florida now. No long races until the fall. Too hot.

Happy Wednesday Warriors!

I've been down and out with yet ANOTHER bout of bronchitis. But at least I caught it early this time. I was able to continue working out to an extent instead of just sitting on the couch! Today is my last day on medication! :woohoo:

As for upcoming races, I am doing Bay to Breakers in SF on May 16 and a local 5k, No Excuses, in Sacramento on 5/31. That's it for May. And then the tri's start up in June. I can't wait!

Just a mid week check in. I'm solidly in taper at this point. But, even though my miles have been decreasing, I'm trying to keep the intensity up. On Monday, I did intervals, combining 3 minutes of walking with 1 minute of slow running. Did 8 repititions with a 1/2 mile warm up and cool down. After Cleveland, I'm hoping to springboard that into a c25k. Right now, I planning on doing the conservative plan on http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/Programs/conservative_program.htm starting in month 3 2 days a week combined with the long run in the Marathoning for mortals Walk/Run plan with the goal on being able to run half an hour with at most 1 or 2 walk breaks and do a fall Half Marathon with a walk/run. Does that seem like too ambitious of a goal?

Today, I focused on a steady to improving negative splits for 3 miles of all walking (since I am signed up in the walking division in clevelan). Other than 1 1/2 mile of daydreaming I did very well the split times from my Garmin show

I have my Garmin set for half mile auto laps because that's what the markings on the trail I walk are so I'm used to looking at half mile times and I gives a decent proxy for current pace (which seems to bounce all over the place on the Garmin). The first half mile was a warmup.

Carrie, As far as my insoles go, when I tried Dr. Scholls Gel insoles I completely wore out the area right over the ball of my foot very quickly. I've since switch to the Dr. Scholls big and tall insoles and they seem to be performing well. I just need to be sure the arch support is directly over my arch and not too far forward or backward.

Good afternoon Warriors,

Hello from warm & sunny central IL. Just wanted to let y'all know I became a marathoner this past Saturday. I ran the Il marathon in Champaign, IL. Did it in just over 5 hours by my Garmin time. I'm still pretty pumped up about it & have the desire to do another one.

I guess I am doing another one (Goofy challenge) in 2011. I have done a couple of race reoprts on my blog, the Kentucky Derby mini marathon & my marathon last Saturday. If you would like to read them, you can find them at http://bloomingtonrunner.blogspot.com.

42 miles on the bike this morning. A nice comfy (somewhat slow) ride, but nobody really tried to kill me, so that's a plus!!

Jeremy, looks like you are doing a good job, I am a racewalker first and a jogger second and it seems like you are working your way into things. Take it easy. If you start experiencing aches/pains then slow it back down.
How is your Mom doing?

Lily, Nope summer = training for Disneyland this year, otherwise it would have a 5k a month at least. So, out in the Florida Sun I go. Of course I am trying to play it smart. :)

Chris, BUDDY!! Hoping you are "getting back in it" as you have a Half Marathon at Disneyland coming up!:rotfl:

Sarah, Glad the skirt is making it comfortable to get out there and run! Fabulous! Yep, its warm here in South FLA with a high today of 92. But like anyway, if you play it smart and prepare it can be done and only makes you stronger!!!

Carrie, Congrats on the PIG!:thumbsup2 also thanks for doing the Warrior race tracking!

Jim, Great Pool workout and I always find it interesting when you sweat from a pool workout.

AFM - Things are moving along nicely. Today, as some of you know, is my regular miles day. Today was 4 miles and in between the lightening alarms going off, I got er done! We got new scrub at work and I am loving wearing a size smaller, nothing like the little things in life!!

Sarah, glad you've found the running skirts to help you. I would have never thought that the skirt would give that much support.

Jeremy, you're doing Cleveland's event? Really. Darn, I'll miss you there, I would have cheered, if we were were in town. Where do you do your training that has markers for half miles? I train on the Towpath with mile markers. Seems like you've got a good plan worked out for yourself. Hope you can figure out the blister thing.

Carrie, good job getting the Pig done! Hope your tri training goes well.

Jim, good going on the pool w/o and biking. What a machine.

Michelle, sorry about being sick. Glad you seemed to have caught it before it got out of control.

Tracy, yay for the smaller size! We have less high heat time here and while I do get out in it, I certainly do not enjoy training in it. I don't envy your high heat training for DL.

It's been a bit of an emotional time for us here. DH has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He's had the last test and all info is being sent to Cleve Clinic where he'll be consulting with a doc there as far as procedure. That's the bad news. Good news seems that it looks like it is contained in the gland so prognosis is good. Another bump in the road. I walk/run to relieve stress. Some moments I think there is not enough miles these days.

Leaving in the a.m. for a drive to Indianapolis mini 500 half on Saturday. There are other WISH Team members going to be there and we will have a mini meet. Happy training Warriors!

I'm back at it and have done a 5 mile and 3 mile run. Also getting in some walking 2-3 miles a day. Been eating better the last week and a half and it's really showing in how I feel when I run. Not to mention the warmer weather.

Everybody signed up for their Disney races? Disneyland is at 70% and Disney World in January is now at 50%. Better get moving......

Jim - Good to hear your enjoying your bike riding.

Tracy - Mom is doing well, yesterday dad went to the doctor and he said the next time he saw mom he would release her from the nursing home (barring any unforeseen problem).

I'm looking at that conservative c25k to hopefully avoid overdoing it. They plan is less structured than Coolrunning c25k but the basic idea is each week you do do 3 30min workout and as you progress replace 2 minutes of walking with 2 minutes of running each week with a near repeat week every 4th week. But it leaves it up to you to decide how long each walk and run cycle need to by. I plan on keeping my half mile warmup walk and half mile cooldown walk so all total it will be between 45min. and 1 hour 2 days a week.

Lily - I live in knox county and do the vast majority of my training on the Kokosing Gap Trail (http://www.kokosinggaptrail.org/) It is a very nice 14 mile long paved rail/trail. I live about a mile from the Mount Vernon end of the trail but drive to different parts of the trail to get some variety into may workout. They have markers every 1/2 mile (more or less, there are a couple that the garmin says are .03 - .04 of a mile off. )

Chris - Good luck getting back started.

Tomorrow is my last long (only 5 mile) training before Cleveland I haven't decided what pace I want to go at. I'm planning on playing that by ear but leaning toward a slow pace. My feet are doing better and the reduced milage is allowing the blisters to finish healing.

ETA: went out this morning and did my 5 mile training walk. I ended up doing it at a fairly slow pace. I averaged a 16:45 mile. My feet held up well. So now, I just need to decide of final race strategy. Right now, my biggest fear is starting too fast and fading too much at the end.

It is a freakin' hot day today. I left the house this morning about 1015 for my daily run. Waaaaaaaay too late. I managed to slog through 2 miles before I decided it was just not the right time to run. Ran 2 miles, then walked a mile home.

So, feeling guilty, this evening I went out and did 4 more slow miles. Not sure if it's the heat or tired legs from yesterday, but it was a slow day. But I guess it's expected to be slower in high heat. It has gotten really hot really quickly, so it's gonna' take some time yo get back in the hot weather swing of things.

I guess it's almost time to sign up for the Stupi........................ uhhh, Goofy Challenge. See ya' there???

I can't believe I haven't checked in since stalking Carrie at the Flying Pig! (I ran behind her for quite awhile- would have to stop with calf cramping then catch up again - I might have even gotten ahead at the top of the hill when she stopped for photos but finally lost her on a potty stop)

I liked the pig- fun race I could leave the rain though- I'm almost afraid to sign up for a fall race after WDW and Flying Pig I think the 2010 race season just might be jinxed!

Carrie congrats on the flying pig- oh i can imagine the tension as you waited to hear if it was on. I'm always really reluctant to buy finisher stuff before a race,but have promised myself that if I don't finish something then I would throw the items away! sorry i don't have any races planned for this month :(

Jim well I'm glad it's not just me that sweats in the pool. Oh no actually i 'glow' ha ha. Love the determination you have for swimming, guess you'll spend more time in the water with the heat rising? My word it's hot there!

Michelle rubbish that you've been poorly sick again. You'll be the best bronchitis diagnostician ever soon! If it's your last day on meds do you feel better then?

Stan congratulations on becoming a marathoner!!!!! How does it feel and has it sunk in yet?

Jeremy you're training sounds really consistent! brilliant effort. I too love my garmin (not the fit of it mind you!). Do you always record your splits after a run and keep a log or something? People keep telling me to keep more detailed records of runs, but not really sure about it! Glad your mum's doing well, we have two elderly relatives (one's 98) so know all about caring for people too. Look after yourself too tho!

Tracy just in case I hadn't mentioned it..... so proud that your hard work is paying off!!!Lightning alarms hey, as if the lightning was scary enough on it's own!

Lily oh my word Lily i am so sorry- you're absolutely right though, it's one bump and you've got through so much together in your life that you guys will sail through. Thrilled that it's contained. Walking is amazing to destress so def keep at it!!!! Massive cuddles coming your way.

Chris congrats on your half too- let the training recommence ha ha ha.

Sarah wonderful news that you found a bump cuddler for your runs. they really do think of everything don't they! Hey you should get some fabric paint and decorate some of them so you can feel like you have lots of different styles!!!! :)

me got home from WDW on thurs morning and have to admit i was half hoping te ash cloud might have stopped our flight..... i wouldn't be that selfish for everyone else tho and was desperate to see DB :) Had a brilliant time with my parents, weather was HOT after the first 2 days. Melted a little but got in 3 runs: 2x 3 milers and 1x 6miles around coronado springs which was gorgeous. I should have been out again by now but a friend's wedding last night has had somewhat lasting effects so I'll delay for now :rotfl:

So pleased to see you're all doing so well!!!!!

Katie - My consistancy right now has come from my work schedule. I teach college part time. This quarter I'm only teaching t/th. The good part is that leaves me M/W/F free to train, the bad part is income is down right now. Prior to getting my Garmin, my log consisted of scratching off workout on my training routine. Now, I'm playing around with 3 computerized loging method.

1) Garmin Training Center - the software that came with my garmin, you can download it off the Web Site though.
Advantages - Download automatically when I plug the Garmin in to recharge, best at making advanced workouts.
Disadvantage - Only basic features.

2) SportTracks (http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/)
Advantages - Does nearly everything Lots of features
Disadvanges - Not automatic, some complain of it being complicated.

3) Garmin Connect (http://Connect.garmin.com)
Advantages - Online can share results easily. More features than GTC
Disadvantages - not automatic (at least with my 405), not as feature rich as Sports tracks

There are tons others. Right now, I think I'm going to keep using all 3 because they each serve a purpose. Garmin Training Center for the automatic downloads (as a backup in case I forget to download). Sporttracks for the bulk of my analysis, and Garmin connect for online use, sharing results.

Afm I got in 8 miles yesterday and man it was hot. I enjoyed them though as I hit a metro park instead of the normal streets so I'm sure that helped

Lily - :grouphug: for DH's prognosis. My father was diagnosed with it about two years back. He has a few 2nd opinons and finally went with the seeding. He is doing fine now and the one good thought is that pretty much most prostate cancers are not life threatening. I hope it all works out. Take your time, do research and get 2nd opinions.

Chris - yep, told your DW to just sign you up for Goofy when you weren't looking because you are just indecisive. :lmao:

AFM - did a 6 mile March of Dimes event yesterday and a small 2 miler for the Breast Cancer Walk to Empower this moring. So I am a bit pooped.
Going to try and catch the spaceshuttle launch this Friday and then going to hop over to WDW that night and stay one night. Anyone going to be at WDW the 14th or 15th??

It's been a "bad back day" so far :-(. But I was still able to get in a slow 7 miles this morning before it got too hot. I think I am going to have to "pre-medicate" myself before I go running.

Did another 3.33 miler walk. Did it in better time than the week before. Need to really get back into the miles but next week I go to Texas to see my grandsons in El Paso. I try and see them every 3 months as long as my son is stationed there. :woohoo:

Got into our pool and did some swimming and still spinning the pedals.

Marcia, glad to see you. You've got time before DL. Just don't let yourself get too out of the running habit.

Chris, I like Tracey's idea of having your DW sign up a Goofy in the family.

Jeremy, the trail sounds like a great place to do your walking. My advice for the Cleve event would be to not try to go too fast and cause injury. Use the event as a starting point or training adventure. See what you can do, but be wise in keeping your control until you are sure the blister problem is defeated. You don't want to necessarily risk injury and set backs by going faster than you should just now.

Tracey, wow, 2 events this weekend. You should be tired.

Pam, glad you got the event done and sorry about the weather thing surrounding your events. Hope that the next one is perfect weather. What fall event are you thinking of doing?

Kathy, good job improving your pace. Enjoy your visit. Maybe you can find a spot to get in a few steps for the fun of it.

I did the half Saturday in Indianapolis, IN, OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. What a fun event! It was wicked windy and with cool weather that was interesting, played very slowly as we went around the race track and made up for that with improved pace after. Still did it in almost 3:30. It was all good though. We had a great WISH Team mini meet and that made the weekend enjoyable.

Treated my Mom and of course me and DH to a Mother's Day ice cream. We all enjoyed.

Lily -party: Congratulation on your finish at Indy. Sorry to hear about your DH.(missed it the first time I ready through your post). My dad had prostate cancer in the early 80's. He had surgery and radiation treatments and hasn't had any troubles since. Caught early enough, prostate cancer has a very high treatment rate. BTW, do you have any suggestions for places to eat in Cleveland that would be good and cheap?Last year, we went to Olive Garden, when my friend ran at cleveland.

Kathy - Have fun visiting the grandson. You can work on building miles when you get back.

Tracy - Congratulations on your back to back runs.
Chris - Glad you were able to make it through a hot workout.

AFM I got out today for my 30 min. taper walk. Boy did that feel short. I ended up doing 2 miles in a little over 30 minutes. The middle 15 minutes I combined 3 minutes of normal walking with 1 minute of faster walking. I got rid of the running I'd been doing the past couple of weeks but kept the interval work. My feet are almost completely healed.

I've been using a fanny pack in training to carry water and I'm planning on carrying the following items. 2 water bottles, a pack of Power Bar Gel Blasts, Kleenex, Cell phone, Copy of ID, medical tape, MP3 player (haven't decided on using or not). Any other things you can think of that would be useful?

Right now, my plan for Sunday it start near (at) the back of the pack. Looking at last years results, there are about 300 people going my desired pace or slower. Miles 1 probably 2 - Just let them happen both the marathon and half marathon are sold out so that's alot of people to get moving. Going to try not to go out too fast but don't want to get run over either. Mile 2-3 try to find a group of people going a comfortable pace to stick with until probably mile 10. Hopefully that equates to average pace of about 16:00 mile, starting out slower and slowly building to about 15:50 (did this except went to 15:30 in my 8 miler). Mile 10-11 is the last long hill. It will probably slow me down a little. Miles 11-13.1 decide what I have left to push to the finish. Looking at my last couple of long runs, if everything goes well, 3:30ish is a good possiblity. I will be happy though with just finishing with a smile.

One last question, I've been training with the Heart Rate Monitor the past couple of weeks since I bought my Garmin. Do you think I should wear it in the race or just run without it?

My next race will probably be in Sept- Fort Wayne Indiana has a half marathon (usually the 3rd Sat- but I havent' even checked for this year yet) I've done it every year since it started so I'll probably do that - it's too convient to miss! (20 minutes away- I can shower at home after the race) That's probably the only thing on my agenda for now unless I find some local shorter races to do.

I'm waiting another week to get back into training after the pig mainly because I spent the week after the pig in several elementary schools with "snot nosed kids" (literally) and now have a whopping cold of my own- besides the fact that here in fl I have to be out before it's light out or it is too warm for me to run- I have my gear with me but I'm thinking it'll go home clean!

I've gotten a bit behind in my work-outs because life has taken over! I have one more run to finish the C25K and then I start the 10K work-out plan. I think I need to do more intervals and less straight running. I suspect for the 1/2 marathon I'll end up walking a minute for every 10 min I run (or something like that). It still seems overwhelming at this point! Plus, we're not sure about $$$ right now for the trip in January so I may end up running a different 1/2 marathon. I'm still optimistic that it'll work out!

I was a bit tired after my two events this weekend. Saturdays March of Dimes, March for Babies was pretty HOT!!! Sun right on the beach with barely any shade for all the walk and not much of a breeze.
Sunday was much nicer and was at Jungle Island in Miami and it went all along the trails at the park.

I am headed up to Spacecoast on Friday morning to catch the space shuttle launch! Whoo hoo and keeping fingers crossed that it goes off on schedule. Supposed to be at 2:20pm. Then heading over to WDW to stay the night and then come back home on Saturyday!! plus that gives me a chance to see the shuttle again if it is postponed for some reason. I might as well try it again as I am off from work on Friday.

Jeremy: I would definitely wear the Garmin and HRM for your race! It's kind of nice to know your level of exertion - but I would turn off any alerts you have programmed into your Garmin because they can just become frustrating!

As for me.... same old story. Still moving, but it's getting harder. I did 10 rolling (see: turn the corner and start cursing the uphill) miles on Saturday in the first really warm day we've had yet and it was really tough, to be honest. It took me 2:32 to do 10 miles and I was dead tired at the end. I was the last runner/walker back from our running group - the half marathoners were only scheduled for 6 miles, but I decided to do the 10 mile marathon workout just to see if I could. :rolleyes1 I thought the poor Arthritis Foundation director was going to be having a fit about it (I don't think their insurance covers crazy pregnant ladies!), but it turns out that he was sending "spies" up the road in their cars to make sure I was still coming. :lmao: They've also decided that I need to carry one of the family service radios that we normally use for events on all our runs, now. :rotfl:

I've been bribed with ice cream to show up for an extra run tomorrow after coaching, so I'll be getting in a hopefully sunny 3 miles tomorrow!

A lovely hot day in NE Florida. A bit of an southeasterly wind today, but otherwise pretty roasty toasty.

As for me, I did a 40 miler on the bike yesterday, and 7 miles running today. It's still the "get used to the heat" time of the year. I did not get out of the house on my run until about 10:3o this morning. I seem to have the need to watch my stock portfolio get hammered in real-time before I can leave the house. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Did the run with a "run 7/walk 1" m inute strategy. It went ok, but I decided to cut it short & not press my luck. It was kinda' slow, but that Galloway guy sez in the heat that's ok. I'll take his word on it. :rotfl::rotfl:

I was going to swim this morning, but found my goggles had gotten broken & did not want to fry my eyeballs in the chlorine, so with my work schedule, it will probably be Tuesday before I get back in the water.

Hey Warriors! Missed you all! Planned to check in Friday after indulging in a nap after core work out. Checked my e-mail when I got up though, adn found out a good friend's dad had died. Threw me for a big loop. Then traveling to see my mom and my MOIL Mother's Day wekend. Spent the day Monday with my friend who lost her dad. Then I have actually had work to do at work. Go figure. ;)

Been doing well with work outs. 28-mile bike ride adn 900 m swim this week, plus core adn yoga.


This weekend we have 2 Warriors to cheer on Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!!!!! :p :banana:

The Space Shuttle Launch was amazing!! I have lived in South FL all my life and I can see the lift offs (puffs of smoke) from my house, but never saw one live and in person. I picked a park that is the closest you can get without buying a ticket for on property. Was about 14 miles straight across from the launch pad. Got there pretty early, or at least what I thought was early. The two brothers I sat next too had been there since 8am and I got there around 10:45am. The place just filled up more and more until the 2:20pm launch time. The one brother was getting updated on his phone so I knew what was going on. I had all my fingers/toes/legs and arms crossed that nothing would go wrong and there would not be any utterings of the word "scrub". With the tminus 9 minutes started on time - all seemed right and then it kept going unitl 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 and lift off of the Space Shuttle Atlantis and its last official mission to the ISS. What and incredible experience!! Breathtaking!!

Went over to Disney which took about 2 1/2 hours and should have taken 1 hour. That is how packed it was!!
Spent the evening eating over at DTD and visiting with an old HS friend. Saturday I suprised my Mom for her birthday. My Dad and her are spending the weekend with the Mouse. Parked at Boardwalk and walked over to HS and SURPRISE!! Got some TSM in and headed over to EPCOT for a few things and then home. A nice mini vacation and a Disney World Fix. Life is good!

Had a good 5.25 miles today. Serious DL Half training will start in a few weeks.

Tracy - Good to hear the shuttle launch was exciting. The closest I've ever come to seeing a shuttle launch is from US. I was out by the lake and saw this big line of smoke. People then told me that was the shuttle.

Thanks for the encouragment everyone. I took Sarah's advice and wore my HRM. It was very useful at letting me know when to slow down a little.


Most everything went well this weekend (for the most part). Yesterday, got a little bit of a late start because the friend who was driving me had to work in the morning. He's self employed as a lock smith and right now, he can use any work he can get. We arrived in Cleveland about 4:30. I picked up my bib quickly and easily. And then went over to the expo. I picked up my goodie shirt and goodie bag. It had an OK supply of stuff. A nice tech shirt, 2 pieces of candy, several granola bars, sun screen, Gold bond powder and a few other things I can't remember. On the way out of the expo, I stopped back at registration and ran into Frank (firedancer). It was good to be able to talk to him and put a face with a name. Me and my friend decided to eat dinner at Olive Garden and then stopped at Half Price Books so he could grab some reading material before heading to another friends house to go to bed.

After a too short nights sleep,I got up at 5:00 to eat breakfast and get ready to go to the race. We arrived at the race about 6:30 which game me a good amount of time. The race started mostly on time at 7:00, and I crossed the start line at 7:07. The first mile went relative uneventfully was keeping a good pace 16:08 and felt good. My first minor mistake happened in first half of mile 2. I look down at my watch and see that I'm walking at a 14:00 pace (walking with a group I thought was going slower than that). Once I noticed it I slowed down closer to what I was planning. Course support was very good. I didn't need all of the water I was carrying with me. The crowd support was a bit spotty though. The best crowd support was in a new part of Cleveland (Tremont) for the marathon at mile 3-5 and they had several parties going on and great crowd support even for us back of the packers. At the 10K mat look at my watch and it was 1:38, My 10K time last fall was 1:37:07 with a sprint to the finish and today was all walking. Around mile 7 I stopped briefly with the thought of going to the restroom but they were all full so I kept going. I found an empty portapot at mile 9 and grabbed it. I probably lost about minute there. Miles 10.5 to about 12 are a long half way steep hill. At the top of the hill even though my feet were killing me, I decided to alternate between regular walking and fast walking (I signed up in the walking division and wanted to walk the entire way even if other people weren't). The fast walking actually felt pretty good in short burst because it used a slightly different set of muscles. When I rounded the final corner to the finish I walked as fast as I could to the finish. I finish with a clock time of about 3:34 and I stopped my Garmin at 3:27:55 and 13.21 miles. My goal was between 3:30 and 3:45 so I beat that by a little bit.

The biggest down side right now is that they don't have official results up for me yet (I was hoping to get those results before posting). I've email the race officials so hopefully in a couple of days I will get results. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice and encouragement. You really help me do my best.

I felt tired both days. Bleh. I was hoping to get a really loooooong ride in yesterday, but about 7-8 miles into it, I knew that was not going to happen. Maybe it's because I started out going into the winds. Anyways I slogged through 25.

At work today, back at it tomorrow.

Have done some runs tho, went out with DBF who runs stupidly slowly in training (11min/mile) compared to races (8min/mile half marathon)! How does he do that!?!?! Then speed work this morning outside. Wasn't able to run at sprint as long as i'd hoped, but pleased even attempted this.

Kate - I don't know about the grade I'll givev you fro a parent.....making an announcement like that with no picture???? :eek: :rotfl:The fact that my running shoes were for pronation adn so were my orthotics finally did me in Saturday. So, I really did need new runnign shoes. At least that's what I'm sayin'. ;) What's aweful? I don't know what style they aer, jsut Saucony's made for people with orthotics. Bad, me!

Jim - Sorry your ride was not so great. You will ahve better one! Good for you for getting 25 miles in in those conditions!

How cool is it that I can be relaying a story to my old roommate by e-mails, she calls her dh adn when I arrive at the running store, the other employees are waiting for em and already know styles of shoes I should try??? Got to love having a friend's dh work at the store. I felt so special. :goodvibes

Plus, the woman who waited on my asked if I was trianing for something. Well...as a matter of fact I am. A Half IM! (Boy did I feel nauseous after saying that out loud! :scared1: )

I ran a VERY warm 3.9 this morning. SLOWLY adding miles in the heat. It's gotten really hot, really quickly here.

Kate - congratulations on the new arrival. I wish my race times were that much faster than my training times as well.

Well, I took Monday and Tuesday off from formal workouts, but on Monday I walked around Wal-Mart and Tuesday I was teaching and had to walk between buildings. Today was my first official day back working out. I did a little over 2 miles, with 4 1 min. jogging sections in the middle. I'm doing a 5K on Friday and wanted to know if I could walk/run it. Running slow didn't feel too bad, I guess because it uses a different set of muscles.

I got my first "post Pig" run in on tuesday- 2.5 miles and am hoping to get some more distance in today. I'm not sure I will as I have to be at the HS track to time for sectionals around 5:15 and school is 20-25 minutes out of town and after I run I'd have to shower. I'm still hoping to be able to get a run in.

I've been plugging along. Only one week to go with the new runner group. Their 5k is on 5/31/10! I can't wait. It should be a lot of fun!

The other new development is that the other day while at the track with us, DD5 (almost 6) was in the mood to run. She completed 10 laps (2.5 miles)!! I was so shocked. So after talking to her about it, she is going to do her first 5k with me at DL!! She is so excited!

Michelle - I sound like you could have a little runner on your hands. Just keep plugging along, May 31 will be here before you know it.

AFM, I ran in the Radiou 5k yesterday. As you remember, I just did my first half marathon last Sunday so I had no idea how it would go. I normally wouldn't have dreamed of competing this close together but this is the one race that is becoming an annual traditions. Radiou is a hard rock Christian radio station in Columbus Ohio with repeaters around the country. This is the 4th annual 5K and the 3rd I've done. The first time it did the 5K I finished in 57 minutes. I was untrained and did it solely to support the station. 2 years later, missing the 2nd annual race, I finished in 47:01 and I was just getting started in training for my 10K. This year, I was hoping to do better than last year but with only 5 days of recovery I wasn't sure.

We arrived very early for the race because last year there was a problem with shirt sizes and a friend didn't get a shirt that fit. He's a Large and when we registers all they had left was XXL (my size) and Small. This year, there was no problem getting shirts and we had over an hour to relax, warm up, meet the DJ's. etc. My race strategy was to approximate a run 1min, walk 3 min. interval. I had done this approximately 2 miles during training. Even though the course was fairly flat, I planned to very the Walk/Run times a little bit to take advantage of running down hill and walking up hill.

So, we get the start line, the gun sounds and we're off. I decided to start with a running interval, and I'm feeling good for about 30 seconds, I look down at my watch and I'm going fast (for me) closing in on a 10:00 mile, too fast by the end of my first minute I needed my walk break. So, I slow down to a brisk walk. I waited a little bit longer than 3 min before going into my next running interval. This one was about a 12:30 pace about where I wanted to be but since I still hadn't completely recovered from going out to quick, I needed this second walk break. Right about his time, I met up with the lead group coming back. As I closed in on mile 1, it was time to try the 3rd running interval. I ran as far as the mile mark and finished with a 1 mile split of 13:13 but I knew a fixed walk/run interval was done. I decided to run when I could and walk fast the rest of the way.

Over the next 2 miles I only did 4 runs each of which shorter than minute. I reached the turnaround my time was 21:18. I reached mile 2 in 27:37 for a 13:49 mile. Mile 3 I slowed down even further walking the entire 1/2 mile from 2 1/2 to 3. For the final .1 mile I decided to start running again at .05 mile I kicked it up to as much of a sprint as I could muster a 6:26 pace. I cross the finish line with a time of 43:39 a full 3 minutes and 22 second faster than last year and I'm more tired then I was after my half marathon. I also have a better idea of what my maximum heart rate is. Using the various calculators I had calculated anywhere between 175bpm to 185bpm. During my final sprint to the finish my heart rate was between 188 and 190. According to what I've ready online that should be about 5 beats below my maximum heart rate but I'm going to use the 190 for training.

I am thrilled with my results but I can't help but wonder, if I could finish faster on fresher legs or if I hadn't started out too fast. But, that will just need to wait for next race which probably won't be until late summer or early fall.

Tracy - Glad you were able to see the shuttle

Normally we can see the trail from our backyard, but I was in Texas having a great time with my 2 Grandsons ( 9 & 11). My son and his wife are both stationed in El Paso so I do try and get out to see my grandsons plus May is their birthday month for both of them.

Jeremy - Great job on the back to backs.

AFM - Just got home from going camping at a state park close by. We had a great time even though the temp. was in the low 90's. My DH and I did a 6.91 mile walk on the Legacy Trail and then today we did a 10 mile bike ride before packing up and going home. :cool1: It was great after the walk because we showered and then my DH fixed breakfast. We think it will work great for the marathon in Jan. We plan on taking the motorhome over to Epcot and relaxing before hand and then back to the rig afterwards. No buses this time.
Has anyone every parked over at Epcot for the marathon and was there any issues. :confused3
We are staying at Fort Wilderness again but we would un-hook just to make it more comfortable. This we will do for the 5K, 1/2 and then my husband will be also doing the full and then I can relax after seeing him off.:cheer2:

Michelle: Yep, seems like you may have a little runner in the midst. Cool.

Jeremy: Sounds like you did well, considering you just did a Half Marathon just a short time before this event. Could have maybe gone faster, but could have been a combo of just doing a Half and maybe starting out with a pace your body may not have been able to handle. These things can be a situations of trial and error and you just have to see how your body can take it.

Kathy: Not sure what your question is. Do you mean walking from the parking lot to the start or walking from Fort Wilderness to someplace. I don't see an issue with driving over there, but maybe take the buses for the 5K? It is not that big (means participation wise) and buses don't really seem to be that much of an ordeal that day. The buses that are usually packed are the value hotels like the All-Stars and Pop.

AFM: DId a nice sweaty 6 miles this morning. Some elbow bombs and a sweat rag was required but no Pinky pistols yet. I am so ready for the LOST final episode!!! However I am going to miss the beginning, but I am going to TiVo it. First two hours are a recap kind of a thing. I made plans with an old High School guy friend that I reconnected with via facebook. (Isn't FB a trip?) Going to finally see "Oceans" by Disney.

I went 3.33 miles today! I'm so proud. That's the furthest I've ever gone. I'm doing this 10K training which is lots of intervals. Today was run 3 min, walk 1 min repeat 10 times. With 5 min warm-up and 5 min cool-down it was 50 min. I'm not fast but I'm going further than I thought possible!!!

I meant just parking at Epcot. We did use the bus system last year for the
5K. Everyone at the Fort last year was so confused at where to pick up the bus for the 5k and then when the internal buses would be running. It was finally determined that we did have to pick up the bus for the 5K at the lodge . Very confusing.

Kathy Can't help with your question sorry. We went into Epcot after the 5k as neither mum or i were too much of a mess and we popped our race shirts on. No problem at all with the buses after the marathon either- the walk to the bus seemed almost as long as the run, but i'm certain it wasn't :) great workouts too :) I love the idea of being able to chill out whilst DH runs tho ha ha

Jim well there you go then- you found two positives, more than i even asked for!

me ran a very beetroot hot 6.14miles saturday morning, we hit 26oC which is weirdly hot for this time of year. Nearly.... died..... but ran at my speed again of 8:50/mile. Then walked my mum for another 2 maybe 3. Spent today visiting elderly relatives, just a quick walk to get milk which clearly doesnt count. only a few weeks til i do leadership in running fitness course so i can lead my own beginner run club!!!!

Kate - I'll give for arms a rest. Running in the heat can be a problem especially when it is unexpected. Today it was 80 f when I started my walk but staying in the shade wasn't too bad.

Amanda - great job on the repeats.

Tracey - Sound like a good in not HOT run.

AFM - I decided to go out at do a slow recovery walk today. It was warm out and I did about 3 miles in 52 minutes. I had forgotten about one event I have coming up. I signed up for the churches Relay for Life (http://main.acsevents.org/goto/johde) Team. They did the initial signup for times last Sunday while I was at Cleveland and the only times not covered are 1:00 am to 5:00 am. I may decide to double up with someone else on their hour. There was talk around the church that the youth might be taking the overnight hours.

Hey Warriors!!

Happy Sunny & hot Monday!!

It is turning out to be a really warm Spring. And quickly! And Humid!! The heat index is usually 5-7º above the temperature. As a result, I dropped the running mileage back a couple of weeks ago and have slowly been adding .2-.4 miles/run to build the heat tolerance back up. I did about 4.8 today in a slow 10:00+ pace.

One issue I have had recently is that my legs have felt really "dead" (for lack of a better term) for the last few weeks. After trying to figure out what the heck was going on, the only thing I could find different was the pain killer the spine doctor prescribed for me. Sooooooooooooooo, I went off the pain killers about 4 days ago, and today, my legs felt fine (heat tolerance aside). So it looks like I am back to Tylenol & Motrin for pain management. Hopefully it'll work out ok.

Bike tomorrow. I have a meeting at the office tomorrow, so that's about a 16 mile round trip + whatever else I toss in on the side.

I have managed to find 5 1/2's in the fall in the general area. I may turn into a 1/2 ***** this fall just for fun. After the Goofy in 2011, I may stick strictly to 1/2's (for the back).

You guys all rock!! Keep up the great work!!

Hey Warriors! Hope everyone is having a good week.

I got a new road bike last weekend! :woohoo: I am so excited! Haven't been able to ride it yet. DH has not put the pedals on plus it has been raining the last few days.

Last night at the track, we did a timed 5k. My lungs have not recovered from the double bout of bronchitis, so I did a 3/1 interval to give them rest. I didn't want to crash. I finished only 1 minute off of my 5k PR! I couldn't believe it! I can't wait for these lungs to stop acting up on me. But until then, I'll just keep plugging along. :)

Thanks for the encouragement. Yesterday's work-out kicked my butt but I'll re-try it tomorrow. I still did 3 miles in 45 min but I walked the last one. I've decided that I'm ok with walking much of the 1/2 marathon as long as I can finish! I still have lots of time to train.
I'm off to San Fran tomorrow for a work convention. I'm planning to take full-advantage of no children and a nice hotel gym to get at least 2 work-outs in this weekend.
Happy Memorial Day to all (in case I don't get to check in again!)!!! I'm so grateful for the support and to read about all the amazing things that the Warriors do!!!

Tracy - I just don't know how you handle that heat. We went from 50s/60s last week to mid to upper 80s this week. It's killing me!

Jim - Hope the meds switch does enough for your back. Bumme rthat the other meds screwed up your legs. :-(

Pam - I have to always have a race planned or I would never work out. Tris are so much easier for me in the the summer too!

Michelle - COngrats on dd runnign adn on the new bike!

Did 31 miles on teh bike in 89 degree heat MOnday. Longest ride ever!!! Love tha thte heat isn't half as bad on teh bike! OK, shade and a breeze helped too!

Things have been going well for me. I currently don't have any races planned but I'm strongly considering the half marathon portion of the Columbus Marathon in October. So, I won't need to get back into distance work for about a month. In the mean time, I'm looking at starting a C25K Program at http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/Programs/couch_to_5k_overview.htm I'm starting this week with week 4 of the 16 week program. I'm skipping ahead because Week 1 is all walking, Week 2 is Run/Walk ration of 3/27 3 min of running total and 27 min of walking. Weeks 3 and 4 are 6/24. For the last several weeks, I've been doing 1 day a week of 8/24 so going back a step and increasing it to 3 days a week seemed like a good plan. Yesterday, I did a 1/2 mile warmup, then the 30 min. workout, and finally a 1/2 mile cool down. On the weekends I plan on doing 1 and 1/2 miles at the end.

The goal over the next month is to get to half walking and half running for the 30 minutes. At that point I need to switch to half marathon training and will evaluate where to go from there. I think it will be to switch over to the week 14 or 15 of the 27 week plan for 2 days a week and do the long distance from Marathoning for Mortals Walk/Run plan. To keep from going to fast on the run steps, I've set my Garmin to alert me if I'm going faster than a 12:00 mile.

Went out this morning and got my 4 miles in today with 30 min of walk/run.

Happy Friday Warriors!!!!!

A nice sunny (warm) day in Beautiful NE Florida!! I got in 36 miles on my bike yesterday and ran 6.12 today. I fought my back to a tie the last couple of days, so I'll call that a win!

I'm trying to find a Tri event to do this summer, but no luck so far (not spending enough time in the pool anyway, so that's probably a good thing ;-) ).

Ya'll sound like everything is doing well. Remember, many times training is two steps forward & 1 back, (as I personally know too well) so little setbacks are to be expected. Be careful of the heat!! I'm thinkin' the last few days that maybe Al Gore IS right. It's HOT!

On a slight tangent, I just want to remind everyone to PLEASE let your friends & family know how much they really mean to you. Often. I had to go on a call last shift where a man went to work at 6 a.m. & came home at 5 p.m. to find his wife of 20+ years dead on the sofa (natural causes, but extremely unexpected). You just never know when life is going to punch you in the face, Live with no regrets and no loose ends!

Hi Warriors

Trying to work on my balance issue. Have had problems since my car accident. Borrowed my Dad's WII game and have been doing some of those training. As anyone tried any of these games or any other suggestions for balance:confused3

When I walk I do notice myself not walking in a straight line so that is why I thought I better start working on that because when I finally get to do the 1/2 I don't want to walk into anyone.

I will be out tomorrow morning and I think we are going to walk the bridge going over the IC. That is the only hill here on the west coast of Florida and that is like the overpasses at Disney. Easy pace still, especially when my DH just did 150 miles on his bicycle today.

Been awhile since I have checked in. It has been super hot here in central Illinois. Just got home from a fishing trip to Canada with my Dad.

I am 7 miles short of 500 for the year so far, hope to get them done in the morning. Hope everyone who raced this weekend did well.

Had a nice active bank holiday weekend, 2 runs and 2 walks. I was a bit worried after running club on thursday that ITB was back in action, but it seems to have been ok since.

Oh I actually LED the group!!! The main guy had to help his soon move so i was left in charge! It went really well, we covered 4 miles although from mile 2 i was limping I'm not sure anyone noticed :)

Jim- thanks for your post, it does make you think. I always make a point of telling everyone important to me I love them before i fly, but apart from DFiance, no-one else gets a regular one. I'll work on that!

It sound like everyone doing well. Congratulation on everyone who raced this weekend. I went out to do my workout. The goal was to do 21:00 walk/ 9:00 run. I was going to do 8 reps of 1:08 run/2:30 walk after warming up. I actually did more running. I lost track of my reps and started a 9th run step instead of starting cooldown. I was about 1:30 in before I started wondering why this step was taking so long. So I ended up doing 20:00 walk/ 10:30 run between warmup and cooldown.

Great work out there Michelle, even with the ITB. I hate that - oh I posted a good video on Facebook that shows good ways to stretch that sucker!

Nice work Jeremy on working on your intervals. I find with intervals you need to work with it for some time and then see how it is going, adjust it and then stay with it for awhile before deciding if you want to change it up or if your body can change it up. (if that makes any sense)

Carrie I have a 5K on June 26th that I will be doing with a fellow WISHer Tricia.

AFM: I had a good 5K this morning even though it was a bit on the warm and humid side. I was able to get a course PR, so that made my day!! This was the third time for this little local race. Turn out was 670 people! Official time was 36 min 2 sec.
