I was trying to find some of the baby birds this morning (looking around in the lawn area, etc.) -- there's only one left in the nest! :o As I walked past my neighbor's porch (he's in the townhouse unit next to mine), I heard this flapping noise coming from inside his column!!!!!   I glanced up to see a nest has been built on top of his column, too!!!! (Doesn't look like the kind of nest in mine, though). I can only guess that's there's a baby bird that fell out of the nest and inside the column!!! As you can imagine, I'm horrified! I called the Townhouse Association and they have someone en route right now!!!! I'll let you know how it turns out!!!! Keep your fingers crossed!!!!
UPDATE - One of the guys has arrived and had to go back for some special tools & equip to remove the column. We're not hearing the flapping noises anymore. I'm hoping the poor little bird is still alive!!
He also told me that this is pretty common. Many of the nests become too heavy and the nests and birds fall right into the column. I'm so glad that didn't happen to mine!

Oh no! You'd think they'd reinforce the tops of the columns if it's happened before. That's too sad. :(

The poor little thing. I think its just wonderful that they help these birds out though. I'm not sure that there are that many businesses that would. You live in a great place kara.

Unfortunately, they opted to not remove the column on the basis of the structural instability it would cause in the porch roof and the cost of repairing it. (In addition, they would need the approval of the board, and of course, none of the board members could be reached by phone yesterday.)
I was heartbroken and just plain sick at the thought of that bird starving to death in the column, but there is simply no way to reach it without removing the column. :(
I asked the Association director how I could go about petitioning the board to fund the cost of closing up the tops of the columns on all of the townhomes so that this tragedy will not happen again. He was extremely sympathetic and informed me that that is already in the budget that is going up for approval by the board. I will definitely keep on top of that situation and plan to be ready to advocate for it should it not be approved. I'd like for something positive to come out of this heart-wrenching situation. :(
Needless to say, between all of my fledglings leaving yesterday, and this poor bird trapped in the column, I was not having a good day yesterday. :( I guess I can be grateful, however, that the nest in my column was sturdy enough to withstand the weight of the nestlings. I can't imagine how devastated I would have been if their nest had fallen into the column!!
Thanks to all of you for your support and concern. It really means a lot. The DIS is full of wonderful, caring people.

Hopefully they will correct this and it won't happen again, sorry about the little bird :(
Kara, I think you're suffering from "empty nest syndrome" too.
