Snorkeling- mask steaming up?

Does that happen to anyone? Is there anything you can spray on the mask to keep it from happening? Or am I resigned to wetting the inside (which I'd like to avoid as since I wear contacts, I'd like the inside of the mask to be as dry as possible).

It only seems to happen when I am out of the water with the mask still on for a while.

Spit in it. Yukky, I know, but your spit will keep it from fogging. Just be sure to rub it all opver the mask on the inside of the glass though..

Also, most good sporting goods stores sell anti-foggers. Big 5, Sports Authority, etc.

But the old standby that works wonders?... Saliva.

Yep.

Spit into your mask and (yuck) rub it around, then rinse it out good. It will keep it fog-free for several minutes.

We were in a dive shop in Key West and I heard them telling someone that toothpaste works. Not sure if it was paste or gel though. Anyone?

The anti fog drops work well, but I can't remember the name, sorry! There is a dive shop near where we eat out a lot & I got them there, but I've seen them at sporting goods places. Much better than spit :)

they offer several types of anti-fog solutions, and some aren't all that expensive.

The first order is to make sure the glass is really clean, hence the toothpaste, or if a good quality mask, scouring powder (try it in a corner to make sure it does not scratch). Then, once it is clean and grease free, yes, saliva. Rinse a quick dunk in the ocean, then it should not matter if you get leaks, it should still be fog free, your mask should never be so tight that it will keep out every drop! (Talk about a facial hickey). Saliva, still the best and you carry it with you where ever you go and the price is right..;) Learn to clear the mask on your face, place your face a bit out of the water, hold the mask tight to your forehead, then tip the bottom slightly off your cheeks and blow hard out of your nose, the water will clear. Also, if you must slip your mask completely off to clear it, slip it down around your neck, then up on your face, much easier to keep hair out to keep the seal. Masks on the top of head and gesturing and waving with your arms used to be (still? has been awhile since I was certified) a distress signal for divers. Still freaks me to see snorkelers in the water with masks on heads.

I've bought anti-fog spray at Wal-Mart and Sports Authority and it works great. It isn't expensive and it lasted the entire time we were snorkeling.

Old fashioned spit (saliva) is the best way to cure this problem.:cool:
