On August 8, 1945, President Truman signed the United Nationis Charter.

On August 8, 1963, thieves made off with 2.6 million pounds in bank notes in Britain's "Great Train Robbery".

On August 8, 1973, Vice President Spiro T. Agnew branded as "damned lies" reports that he had taken kickbacks from government contracts in Maryland and vowed not to resign. He evenually did.

On August 8, 1974, President Nixon announced he would resign following new, damaging revelations in the Watergate scandal.

Boy! Do I remember the Spiro Agnew and Richard Nixon thing. My dh was in his 3rd year of law school, so we followed all of this very closely :)
