I've heard a couple people say that they've heard great things about this place. We drove by it when we were there in March and there was a line around the building in the middle of the day. I've never seen anything like it except when In and Out opened in Tucson..... that was insane! People camped out the night before and for the next couple of days just to get a burger!

I've never eaten there because the line is always so long, but I figure it must be great to have a line like that consistently! At first I thought it might just be busy like that on weekend evenings, but sure enough I have driven by at 5:00 on weeknights (it's on my way home from the grocery store) and always see the same insane crowds - even in the rain!

OMG, we ate there b/c we smelled the great aromas and it was awesome. We waited about 20 minutes, and the line was across the front of the building to the corner (there is a sign there that says the wait from that point is 21 minutes or something like that). HUGE amounts of food, and it is all very tasty. I had a combo plate, DH had a pulled pork sammie and a ribs sampler, adn we had leftovers for a couple of lunches (our hotel had a fridge and micro). They also had great onion rings - I order the small, after hearing it was about 5 or 6 huge rings, but it was more like 15 at least - too many for me to eat alone for sure.
Definitely worth it!

Thanks! It sounds awesome! We are spending our limited time on the beach so I'll sent dh out to pick some up and bring back to the hotel. Kids won't eat ribs or pulled pork anyways.
Thanks for posting!

Love Phil's! I highly recommend *calling* your order in and then going to pick it up - there's a separate line for phone orders so it moves a lot faster. You can pick up your order and then eat it there if you want to. For phone orders, my experience is that whatever they tell you as far as when it will be ready, add at least another 10 minutes to that. At least for the evening - it might be different if you go right when they open for lunch.

I ate there last week. I really was anticipating the food because of the long lines. I really thought it was going to be good. To me the food was okay, but not great. The sides ruined it for me. The ribs were pretty good. Before I went in, a couple of people told me it was better than Famous Dave's. I thought it was pretty much along the same lines. Some Famous Dave's are really good, and some are not. I would put Phil's in the middle. It was not worth the wait for me. Just my opinion, though.:surfweb:

I think it has been featured on the Food Network..that coupled with the some people being really big fans...makes for the long lines.

I thought I'd update with our review from our trip this past June.
Dh called in our order and went to pick it up. Wait was 5 minutes to pick up. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with fries. Dh ordered the ribs. Both were excellent. The pulled pork was huge!! So much meat and this great big huge roll. YUM! Dh liked the ribs as well.
We will visit again on our next San Diego trip and probably call in and pick up. We can't waste any of our beach time sitting in a restaurant. :lmao:

Phil's is great... best deal in town is the Rib Tickler. Under $7 for baby backs, fries, onion rings and slaw.
