Disabled child/kid clubs

On the potty training issue...

I have an almost 8 year old son with developmental disabilities. We consider him to be continent, but he still has accidents every once and awhle. We are confident enough in his abilities that he wears underwear everywhere--- to school, on long car trips, etc. Last school year--- the entire year--- he had a total of only 4 or 5 accidents.

That said, I'm nervous about the change in routine in the kids clubs. I'd like to put in him a Pull-Up just to be safe. I'm sure his Pull-Up would stay dry, and we of course would check in with him frequently so that if there was a problem we could get it taken care of right away.

Do you suppose there is anyway the DCL staff will be flexible with us on this issue and allow him to wear a pull-up? Or, are we better to just send him in underwear and hope for the best. Again, an accident is highly unlikely but not totally out of the question.

I would call DCL and speak to someone in special services. Explain the situation. Be sure to get the name of the person you speak with, plus the date and time! My guess is that they will say it's OK.

But if they don't, gently remind them about the ADA. This would certainly fall into the "reasonable accomodation" category. If they still say no, then speak to a supervisor.

Hold your ground, you'll win this one.

I agree with Anne. This fits in the reaonable accomidation area. My DD was in day care centers from when she was 3 until she was 12. Even though the rules said kids needed to be toilet trained, we had to get accomidations to fit her disability.

Does ADA apply since the ships are actually registered in the Bahamas?

Well...I had thought about that before I answered. The ships are boarded in Florida, and owned by a US company.

If it came right down to it, my guess is that the court would rule in your favor. But it won't come to that, because Disney doesn't want the bad press. In all honesty they will bend over backwards to accomodate disabled guests.

It seems reasonable to me for them to allow your son to wear a pull-up while in the clubs. However, they can not assist him in any way if he wets his pull-up. They would probably have to page you.

If he goes to school in underwear, I would really give that a try first. When you take him to the kids club, stop by the bathroom first, to minimize the chances of an accident. If he does happen to have an accident in the kids club, then approach them about his special needs and your request that he be allowed into the club in a pull-up. They don't kick kids out after one accident, from what I've read here on the boards. Is it two accidents?

They have a medical information form you fill out when you sign your kids up for the club. Put any relevant information there. If you want to be 'safe' and not have him possibly 'have an accident' that will mess up his clothes I would use a pull-up just in case. If he does mess up the pull up the CM can discreetly page you to help him. Without the pull up all of the kids would know if we had an accident. They do sell the GoodNites that are thin like underwear so no one(kids) would know unless he told them. Who knows after a day or so he may be adjusted to the routine enough to go with just underwear. I think the CM's will work with you in this.
