THIS TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELED, YOU CAN FOLLOW MY NEW REPORT HERE
May 2011 - Flowers and Star Wars and Harry, oh my! (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=39181741#post39181741)
Hey there Disers! That's right, I am back for another PTR/TR adventure! What is the trip this time? Well a 5-night Double-dip cruise on the new Disney Dream of course!
http://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll421/polnickyhunt/PTR/disney-dream-cruiseship-view.png
That is not all though! We have a big two week family trip planned for 2012 and this PTR may actually turn into a PTR for that trip. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that both trips will pan out. I'll be looking to all of you to help me plan these two trips and along the way I will share mini-reports about our non-Disney travels. ;)
Going on the 2011 trip on the Disney Dream will be myself, Lessa, and my mom, Beth.
I booked the cruise the first day it opened for general bookings in order to secure the lowest price. Since I am a full-time Nursing student it is not 100% that the cruise trip will actually happen but the 2012 WDW trip is a definite go.
The 2012 trip will include all of the family. That's right! The Brothers Grimm are returning to WDW! You all know what that means! ;)
A little about my family:
Lessa (that's me!) - I am 26 years old and I have just gone back to school to get my second degree, this time in Nursing. My first degree is in English Lit and Classical Studies so this new course of study is a totally different direction for me. I am loving it though! I joke with my friends that I will be the most educated and well-rounded nurse out there. While tending to my patients and their medical needs I can also discuss ancient history or literature with them, improving their bodies and their minds. :laughing: I am a total Disney addict and I love reading and writing trip reports. I wrote my first one back in 2007 and I have been hooked ever since!
http://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll421/polnickyhunt/PTR/Image063.jpg
Next is Mom, Beth, 47 - She is very hard-working and always deserves her vacations. She is almost as big a Disney nut as I am. Of course I can thank her for the Disney gene, I was raised on the stuff! She loves to travel and she loves to meet new people, she has never met a stranger. ;)

http://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll421/polnickyhunt/PTR/Image389.jpg
Alek (24) - The middle child. He has a big personality and likes to be the life of the party. He is not shy and will often perform outrageous and hilarious stunts. His favourite partner in crime is our baby brother Erich.
http://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll421/polnickyhunt/PTR/P121.jpg
Erich (21) - Erich is the baby of the family. He and Alek are a fearsome duo and are sure to provide tons of laughs and of course tons of frustration for their sister and mother. ;)

The rock fighting photo was taken on top of BlueNose Mountain in the Okanagan Valley, BC.
The second photo is of Eva Lake in Revelstoke National Park, BC.
The third is from Boldt Castle in the Thousand Islands.
And then the last two are from Ottawa. The first was taken from the Rideau parkway looking over the Ottawa River into Quebec and the second one is from the Tulip Festival! :thumbsup2

It really does. I remember having to move the last cruise from December to May and that was bad enough and that wasn't even a canceled cruise, just a moved one. :laughing:

Perhaps you all would like some more details? ;)
So trip number 1!
I booked the cruise on the Disney Dream for May 2011. We are set to sail on a 5-night Double Dip cruise leaving on May 29th. That means that we get to go to Castaway Cay twice! Hopefully that will make up for getting rained out halfway through the day on the last cruise. The other port we will be visiting on the cruise is Nassau and then we will have a Sea Day somewhere in there.
Since I am paying for this cruise all on my own as a gift to Mom I decided to book an inside stateroom. I am a poor suffering student so I went with the cheapest option. ;) Had this been a cruise on the Magic or Wonder I probably would have gone with an Oceanview room but the inside cabins on the Disney Dream will feature a nifty virtual porthole. The porthole plays a live feed from various cameras that are positioned nearby on the outside of the ship. In addition to that live feed you will get a random Disney character popping up every now and then. It all sounds very fun and the Inside Rooms were the first to get booked up when the Dream became available for booking.
Here's what the room is supposed to look like:

wow, those inside staterooms looks SOO spacious! Are the rooms on the Wonder and Magic just as spacious?
The pictures always show a very spacious inside stateroom, but I'm never sure if that's exacty what I'm getting.

The verandah room we had on the Magic was very spacious. I would say it was around the size of a value room at a Disney resort. Mom and I were very comfortable in our room with all our stuff spread out. The inside rooms are smaller than the verandah rooms as they are lacking the balcony and some do not have the split bath system that the higher room categories do. I think it will be fine though but I would not recommend an inside room for more than 2 people. I guess I will just have to wait and see for sure though how roomy the inside room will actually be!

:rotfl:
Nope, it is a Queen bed, word is that the beds on the new ship will not separate into two beds like on the Magic and Wonder. That will probably only get confirmed or denied closer to sail date. The couch will turn into a bed though as on the other ships.
This room is actually smaller than the one we had this past May, just a different layout so the bed is up against the back wall.

What I like about the new oceanview cabins is that the porthole has a nice window seat that you can sit in, the older ships don't have that.

This one's my fave!
I think the virtual porthole may be one of the best ideas the cruise industry ever came up with! It actually make the inside staterooms desirable. I hope the prices don't up too much because of that.
I really want to go on a Disney Cruise. When I went on my Royal Caribbean cruise, the room was TINY. And so was the tiny little shower. There was very little room to move and the vanity area was very small. If I can pay the same price for a room on the Magic or Wonder, then I'll take it!

I think once the Fantasy is released and DCL has four ships out the prices may become a little bit more reasonable. More supply=less demand=lower prices, well hopefully! :laughing:

:thumbsup2 For the short cruises like this one I think spending the money on a verandah is a bit of a waste. It is really nice to have one though when on a longer cruise. You are right though, if the difference between going and not going is staying in an inside room then it is definitely worth it. They are so much cheaper!

Nope, we were able to choose our room if we booked a higher category but the Inside Rooms were only Guaranteed Status so we won't find out our room until close to the sail date. I'm not concerned about it though, I'm sure wherever we end up will be fine. I have read that a lot of the people in the guarantee rooms end up getting upgraded so that DCL can then open up those cheaper rooms closer to sail date to try and get as many people onboard as possible. That probably won't happen on our cruise with the ship being so new and thus very popular but you never know. ;)

Only one week of school left and then I will be off for a 3-night girls trip to Niagara Falls! :woohoo:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am not usually a fan of short cruises as the 7-night last year really spoiled me. What convinced me to book the Dream was that they were offering 5-night cruises with two stops at Castaway Cay. 5-nights is still kinda short but there are two stops at Castaway Cay! That is what did me in and convinced me to book. :laughing:
Our last trip we only got to spend about half a day on Castaway Cay before we got rained out. :sad1:
Castaway Cay has undergone some renovations to get prepped for the new ship. They will be expanding the family beach, adding a new water play park, private cabana's, and a new eatery to name a few.
Here is the DCL video released that previews all the changes.
Yep, all the food on the island is included, it is like you are eating on the ship. The only thing you pay extra for is alcohol and specialty drinks.
I write my last exam of the year this morning, physics, should be fun. ;) No matter what I get on this last test I know that I am finishing the year with a 4.0. :banana:
As you can see I have my academics all straightened out but there is one area in my life where I am failing, my weight. I have a big two week hiking trip with my dad in June so I have been trying to get ready for that. What does this have to do with the cruise? Well.... I have been inspired by my fellow Dis buddies Carissa (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2376342) and Missy (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2448592) to get into shape by running. Disney runs a 5K on Castaway Cay and my goal is to run it on our next cruise. So hopefully now that I have announced this here on the boards I will actually go through with it. ;):rotfl:
If you want to run the 5K you meet up at the dock and leave the ship before the rest of the passengers. You are then led by a Disney guide. You run from the dock out to the opposite side of the island and then back.
http://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll421/polnickyhunt/slide3.jpg
So that is where I leave you for now. I am off to Niagara Falls with some friends once I finish my exam this morning. See you when I get back!
I woke up the morning of the trip with a horrible pain in my back. I must have pinched a nerve or pulled a muscle in my sleep as I couldn't turn my head without being in pain. I sucked it up and got ready to head into school to write my last final, Physics. It was ridiculous how easy it was and I was done in 15 minutes.
It was off home to pack, it took me forever! We didn't hit the road until nearly noon.
Going on the trip were my friends Kyah and Brittany. Two of our other friends, Erin and Erika, were originally go on the trip but they couldn't due to jobs/finances. Since they couldn't come I suggested that we bring flat versions of them!
We arrived in Niagara Falls around 4:30 after dropping Erika off at her home in Burlington.
We had booked a City View room at the Sheraton on the Falls through Expedia. They had an excellent sale going on and we got the room for $70 a night.
There was no line at check-in but the girl who checked us in was a real snot. She was not friendly at all. I had put in a request for a room on a high floor to make sure we didn't have any noise from traffic since we had that city view. Well we got our request and got a room on floor 22, the very top floor!
We parked the car in the Casino parking garage and then made our way to our room. Our hotel was part of a complex that joins three hotels, the casino and an indoor waterpark. So we were able to get to our room without once stepping outside.
I was very pleased with the room, it was very spacious and comfortable.
Being from a Chinese family, any time friends or relatives from China or Hong Kong come to visit, we take them to the falls.
My siblings and Chinese friends are already sick of it, but I still love going.
For a more romantic experience, I suggest one of the many bed and breakfasts lined up around the Falls, or the Fallsview casino hotel.
It was really windy out that day which made it pretty chilly. I was regretting my decision to not change out of my skirt before heading down to the falls. I had to keep grabbing at my skirt to keep it down or else I would have been burning the retinas of the other poor tourists down at the falls that day. :laughing: It is a good thing I was wearing pretty undies that day, just in case. ;)
:rotfl: about the pretty panties. I only buy cute panties. Life's too short to not wear cute panties! Plus, they cost just as much as the plain ones anyways (if you find a great sale).
That double rainbow is so cool! I gotta keep my eye out for those next time I'm there. Which is hopefully in a couple of weeks cause the weather has been gorgeous lately.
Oh wow!! Your beautiful pictures bring back memories!! I went to Niagra Falls my Junior year of high school (Spring 1996) on a choir trip. I will never forget taking the boat ride out to the falls in those blue ponchos--it was incredible!! As our boat was coming back it crashed into the dock and I went flying and bruised up my leg! Crazy--but definitely a memory!!
February 28 - That's when I can book excursions and Palo if I have paid in full by then
March 15 - Full payment is due
May 29 - The cruise!
The other booklet just has general information about documents you need to travel, air arrangements, packing suggestions, etc.
It is always exciting to get Disney mail!
The Maid of the Mist! I remember that too! I've only ever been on that twice in my life. I love that ride, but it's a bit pricey. I always go to the less expensive, behind the falls experience. Still very cool
You stayed at the same place I did last time I stayed there. Funny story - short version. 4th anniversary with the ex. (common-law) Made all the nice plans including falls side, high floor etc. Even got upgraded. By the time we got back to the room that night to relax and enjoy the view it was so foggy you couldn't see the street below let alone the falls. :rotfl: Guess it was a sign. We didn't make it to 5 years. :laughing:
Lessa if you ever get tired of nursing you'll have a career in photography. It may be just a point and shoot but you use it well! You capture more than just pictures. You capture a feeling. :goodvibes It's a talent.
The Crowne Plaza, formerly the Brock. The most historic hotel in the Falls. This is where I stayed the only other time I had visited. Unfortunately on that trip we were only there for one night and I was super sick so we didn't get to do anything. Our hotel was connected to this one as part of the Falls Avenue complex. The complex has the two hotels, the Hard Rock, Rainforest Cafe, Casino Niagara, Hershey Store, Coke Store, Arcade and Water Park all connected by indoor walkways.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/D1244.jpg
It was right around 7pm and we really starting to get hungry and we decided to eat at Planet Hollywood which was right next door. We stopped in at the Hershey Store first though. Considering how hungry we were (hadn't eaten since breakfast) we exercised amazing restraint. :laughing:
Unfortunately the doors to the restaurant were locked even though the sign said it was open. There was another entrance in the back so we went around that way but it was also locked. :headache: It was only 7pm! I guess Planet Hollywood doesn't get enough business in the off-season to stay open on a Wednesday night. Well that plan was a bust, so we had to find somewhere else for dinner and hope that it was open.
I know you all have been dying to know where we went for dinner since Planet Hollywood was so inconsiderate in not being open. ;)
Well we didn't want to venture far as we were starving and right next door was our hotel complex and part of that complex was the Hard Rock Cafe!
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/D1281.jpg
We crossed our fingers that it would be open and made our way in.
We were in luck! It was indeed open, not busy though, I think there were maybe 4 other tables occupied.
First thing we did was order some drinks. ;)
We ran into our elevator buddy from earlier. When we first arrived at the hotel earlier that afternoon we had to make our way from the parking garage to the hotel which involved taking two elevators and walking through two hotels. Well the entire way we had a stalker in the form or a very nice older gentleman. Well he just so happened to be eating with his wife at the table right next to us.
Our waitress saw us with our flat friends and she thought it was the funniest thing ever. She offered to take a group picture.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/D1293.jpg
Well it was a stroke of luck that Planet Hollywood was closed because our meal at the Hard Rock was awesome! Pricey but awesome!
Brittany and Kyah both loved their food.
It was all so good and very filling. My stomach hurt it was so full, I couldn't finish the potatoes even though they were so yummy.
After dinner we made our way back up to the room to get changed into some warm and comfy clothes.
Your Falls updates are bringing back so many memories. That food from the Hard Rock looks fantastic. We have one in Nashville and I don't know if it's been affected by the flooding or not...shoot...now I have to go look because I'm curious. :lmao: Great updates Lessa!:goodvibes
I went to Niagara Falls as part of my Gr.8 graduation trip and ate at the Hard Rock.
All I really remember was the high price....but they had AMAZING desserts
I haven't been back since. If I have extra cash, I should visit it.
The prices are high but the food quality is amazing! Taste is excellent and the portions are big.
The portions were enormous! It was a real struggle to finish my meal and I felt obligated to eat at least some of the potatoes since I had ordered them. I think I only managed a few forkfuls before I just couldn't eat any more. :laughing:
It stinks that PH was closed--but I think y'all came out much better at the Hard Rock. Those drinks looked SO yummy. The one reminded me of the Bon Voyage that they serve on the ships. And the food didn't look to bad either! Good for your friends for being such good sports and going back down to the falls with you...the night-time shots are gorgeous!
I agree, we were better off eating at the Hard Rock.
:laughing: I did that every morning! I always woke up hours before my friends (usually around 6am) so I walked from my hotel all the way down to Table Rock and then back again. I usually walked partway up Clifton Hill as well to get breakfast from Tim Hortons. I wonder how far I walked each morning?
I did not sleep well that first night in Niagara Falls even though I had a bed to myself (Britt and Kyah were the lucky ones who got to share). I don't usually sleep well out of my own bed and on top of that Kyah and Brittany were snoring like crazy. Both of them had stuffed noses so that just added to the problem. I was tossing and turning all night while listening to the "melodic" rhythm of their wheezing and snoring. :rolleyes: At one point I was asleep but got woken up when Kyah fell out of her bed. :lmao:
At 6am I just gave up on sleep and decided to start my day. The others were still sleeping so I had a quick shower and decided to go for an early morning walk down by the falls. I left them a note telling them were i had gone and when to expect me back so that they wouldn't freak if they woke up and found me gone.
It was really nice down by the falls that early in the morning as there was almost nobody else out, just a few joggers and some gardeners working in the park.
I took my time and really enjoyed the scenery and it was nice to be able to get pictures without getting in the way (or have somebody get in my way ;)) and I also didn't need to worry about making Kyah and Britt wait around for me while I took pictures.
It was chilly that morning but not too bad. I was nice and toasty in my college sweatshirt. The hood came in handy too as the mist from the falls that morning was really crazy, especially as I got closer to the Horseshoe Falls. I didn't need to take a shower that morning, the mist would have been sufficient. ;)
I really want to try that new experience, Niagara's Fury.
The newly renovated Table Rock Centre is so nice! I love the candy shop they now have in there. And the Tim Horton's!
I think it's so cool that flowers close and open to the sun. I've got a couple of tulips on my lawn and it's just so neat to see.
It was nice being down there by myself. It wasn't crowded during the day by any means but it was hard to walk without getting in somebody's picture or I would want to get a particular shot but there were people standing where I would need to be so I had to wait for them to move. :laughing:
I'm sure the mist feels great, when it is hot, 6:30 am when it is at the most 10 degrees (Celsius), not so much. :laughing:
Niagara's Fury was fun, we got the adventure pass so we could do all the activities.
Table Rock was very nice inside. I stepped in there after getting drenched by the mist to warm up a bit even though nothing was open I could still walk around inside.
In addition to two stops at Castaway Cay the cruise will include a sea day and a port day in Nassau in the Bahamas.
What to do on our day in Nassau is causing me a great deal of trouble.
I have always wanted to go to Atlantis. It just looks like so much fun and is a beautiful and well-themed resort. In order to go to Atlantis and have full use of the facilities it is going to cost $300! I don't know if it is worth it for a few hours. There is an awesome water park, beach, aquarium etc. there and lunch and transportation is included in the price.
There is the option of booking a room at the Comfort Suites near Atlantis for the day for $250 that allows us full privileges at Atlantis but then we would have to find our own way there and food would not be included.
The only other excursion that looks interesting would take us to Blue Lagoon Island which is a short boat ride from the port. We could opt for the dolphin swim there which would cost about $400 or we could just do the beach day for $140. I am hesitant about paying $140 to go lay on the beach as it doesn't look any nicer than Castaway Cay and we will be going there twice.
Third option, no excursions. Just stay on the ship that day and enjoy the pools and maybe get off and walk around the area near the port.
:confused3
I suggest you skip the excursions and just pay for a ferry ride there and back. I remember it was about $10 per person.
The water park is cool, but you'll already be getting a beach at Castaway anyways. The aquarium is free to look at. It's a big part of the hotel. And you can just eat lunch on the ship before you head out. Instead of paying extra to eat somewhere else
I can't remember if it was Nassau or Key West, but keep your eye out for a store near the port that sells colour-changing t-shirts! They have t-shirts that change colours with sun exposure. My family picked up a few while we were there.
There's also a store that sells family coat of arms. You can try looking for your own family name there. Pretty cool. Unfortunately, they didn't have any Asian names there....which made sense because Asians don't have coat of arms....
When I went on the Wonder to Nassau in 2006 I took the excursion that had a guided tour of the Atlantis resort. They had buses going back to the cruise terminal anytime we wanted to return and you could go to any of the stores and explore as much of the resort you wanted to after, just not swim i the pools. You can see all my picture from that cruise on my Flickr account here. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/11288498@N02/sets/72157622304650317/)
You are probably talking about Del Sol. I've been to their shops before, I even have a nail polish from their, it is so fun watching my nails change colour in the sun!
Time for another Niagara Falls update!
I arrived back at the hotel after my lovely early morning walk just after 8am and my friends were just getting up. The plans for the day were to go shopping! There are a bunch of outlets in Niagara Falls so we decided to spend our morning looking for deals.
This is part of our hotel complex that connects the Sheraton to the Casino and the Crowne Plaza.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8517.jpg
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8518.jpg
Thanks to the GPS we found our way to the outlet mall very easily with a quick pit stop at Tim Hortons for breakfast.
We were a bit early and the mall didn't open for another 15 minutes so we just browsed around looking at all the window displays.
I don't remember each store we went to but we shopped for about 4 hours. Amazingly, I only spent $25! We went into a chocolate store and they had a special on, 60 truffles for $20 and you got a big bag of chocolate caramels with your purchase. I couldn't turn that down!
I was also very tempted in the Coach store. They had a section that was 40% off and then that day they were having a sale where you get an extra 20% everything in the store. I restrained myself though as I didn't see anything I LOVED.
We stopped at an Italian restaurant for a delicious lunch and then it was back to the hotel for some downtime in the pool.
Walking through the Crowne Plaza
Everywhere we went in Niagara Falls we heard about Marilyn Monroe and how she visited Niagara Falls while filming a movie. I think we heard the story at least 10 times.
Wow, that's an amazing view from the pool. Did it have a hot tub?
I'm surprised! She was everywhere! :laughing: The story about her and the one about the little boy who survived the fall over the falls were posted and told EVERYWHERE! :laughing:
No, no hot tub which was disappointing.
Sorry I did get a response about the tour of Atlantis but I was away at the cottage for the long weekend. Anyway was the tour worth the cost yes for me because I wanted to see Atlantis and at the time I went on the tour I think the coast may have been cheaper then it is now. It includes a bus ride that goes back and forth to the shopping area by the resort and the port. You could leave at anytime you wanted. Also I think they said that we could use the beach but not the pools, keep in mind this was in 2006 so things may have changed.
That night we decided to have some fun on Clifton Hill which is basically the main drag with all the tourist trap type attractions.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8577.jpg
First we decided to play a game of Galaxy Golf! I LOVE mini-golf. I'm not any good but for some reason I just love to play.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8581.jpg
We were so pathetic that we had to stop playing halfway through to let two little girls play through as we were holding them up. :laughing:
We had bought a "fun card" that would get us into 6 attractions. It had three of the attractions we were definitely going to and paying for them individually would have cost the same as the card so naturally we went with the card.
Mini-golf down we went across the street to Ripley's Believe It or Not!
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8593.jpg
This place was a lot of fun!
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8611.jpg
There was this zany hallway you have to go through to exit. It is impossible to walk straight in it! It is black with coloured lights swirling around you. It was so much fun going through the hallway that we walked through 3 times! :laughing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qppgm4_C8P8
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8625.jpg
Next it was the SkyWheel which is like the London Eye but smaller.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8630.jpg
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8633.jpg
Well we were all a bit nervous and when we started to move we all freaked a bit.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8637.jpg
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8640.jpg
It was fine after a few minutes and we realized that we would not plummet to our deaths. :laughing: We had a great view of the falls all lit up but I couldn't get any good pictures because of the movement.
They let us go around 5 times. We were REALLY ready to get off.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8658.jpg
Next up we went to an arcade type area where we used our fun card for this ride.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8660.jpg
It is the same type of thing as Buzz Lightyear. You ride around and shoot at targets with your laser gun. Of course it was not as elaborate as Buzz but it was fun for what it was.
We decided it was time for dinner at that point. We didn't want to spend a lot of money so we just stopped at the Wendy's.
We then caught a really lame Clown ride but no big deal as it was included in our pass so we hadn't put out any extra money for it.
We were really wiped by then so we made our way down to the falls to get a few pictures and then off to bed for the night. We still one more attraction on our pass so we decided to save it for the next night.
Oooh, I really wanted to go on the SkyWheel! How long did it take for one rotation? I plan on getting the funcard next time I'm down there too.
I love Ripley's. I always go, even though they don't change it up a bit. I have a cousin that loves these records. I buy him the new edition of the book every year for his birthday.
The ghost blasters ride wasn't too scary right? I'm very iffy about haunted house type things.....Which is why it's strange how much I love the Haunted Mansion...but how can anyone not love those happy haunts?
No, it wasn't scary at all. It is only worth going if you have admission on your fun card, I wouldn't pay to do it.
A bit scary! This is the second bear in less than a year (that he knows of) that has been in the neighbourhood. I think I will be looking very carefully before I exit his house when we go to visit in a couple weeks!
So time for more trip plans!
I'm not sure if we are going to fly or drive down. I am tempted to drive simply so that I am not hindered in my souvenir shopping by airline/luggage restrictions. :laughing:
Either way I am thinking that we will arrive in Orlando a day or two before the cruise and stay at Disney. We won't go into the parks though, just hang out at the hotels and shop around Downtown Disney. Maybe have dinner at the Poly and watch Wishes from the beach.
We would then drive to the port the day of the cruise.
So what fun suggestions do you have for doing Disney outside of the parks?
Britt and Kyah were awake when I made it back but they weren't ready yet so I chilled and watched some Regis and Kelly and read the morning paper. The hotel had free copies of The Globe and Mail (best paper in Canada), the sign of a good hotel, they carry a high quality paper and not trash like the Toronto Star. ;)
Once the girls were ready we were off! We had to make our way down to the Table Rock at the Horseshoe Falls so that we could buy our Adventure Passes. The Adventure Pass costs around $40 and includes admission to the four main attractions: Maid of the Mist, Niagara's Fury, Journey Behind the Falls and White Water Walk. You also get free transportation on the PeopleMover bus which shuttles you around to all the various sites in the area. You can also get discounts on other area attractions with the pass such as the Butterfly Conservatory.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8820.jpg
They have it set up so that you can reserve a time to enter the attractions (except Maid of the Mist, that is first come first served). Not really necessary at the time of year we were traveling but probably very useful in the summer.
We decided to go to Journey Behind the Falls and Niagara's Fury first since both are located in the Table Rock centre where we bought the passes. First Britt and Kyah needed to grab some food. They hadn't eaten yet since they weren't productive early risers like me. :snooty:
Once their tummies were full we went to Journey Behind the Falls. At this attraction you get shuttled down behind the falls in an elevator and then you walk the tunnels to viewpoints behind the falls and then you can go out onto two observation decks. The lower deck was still closed so we only got to go onto the upper one, that was fine and the view was still great. The guide who took us down in the elevator made a big deal out of the fact that Marilyn Monroe had visited when she filmed the movie Niagara. No kidding! ;):laughing:
The picture isn't very impressive but that is a wall of water through that opening. It was VERY loud! There were two portals you could look out.
Journey Behind the Falls was neat but if you only have the money to do one of the "up close" activities I would go with the Maid of the Mist.
Next we went upstairs to Niagara's Fury. For some reason I thought this was a motion simulator ride. Instead it turned out to be a movie in the round like the Canada and China movies at Epcot but with water effects.
Everybody who enters is handed a souvenir poncho that you can keep or recycle at the end of the show.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8852.jpg
There is a cute little preshow where you are introduced to the main character of the film, Chip Flat Tail. He has to write a paper for school about the history of the Falls. He falls asleep on the books and that is when you are escorted into the main show room.
Just like at Epcot the movie plays all around you and you stand in the centre. The basic plot is that Chip is taken back in time and you follow along with him to see how the Falls were created. Along the way you get doused at regular intervals with water, hence the ponchos. It was a very cute and fun film and Brittany said it was her favourite of the four attractions we did that day.
My family has been behind the Falls TONS of times, but only on the Maid like...once....or maybe twice.... It's mostly because we don't want to park elsewhere.
I love the new Table Rock Centre. Got great new souvenirs and a candy store! Also, the food court is better arranged.
I'm going to finish the Niagara TR this week as I leave next Sunday to spend two weeks at my dad's house out in British Columbia.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After visiting Journey Behind the Falls and Niagara's Fury it was time to go on the Maid of the Mist! This is the one thing I was most looking forward to.
I suppose we could have hopped on the PeopleMover but it was such a nice day out and so warm so we decided to walk back down to where the Maid of the Mist docks which is almost right across the street from our hotel.
We got another set of souvenir ponchos and then made our way down to the bottom of the gorge to get on the boat.

I was juggling two cameras at once trying to get photos and video. Brittany and Kyah were too nervous to handle the cameras, they thought they would drop them or get them too wet.

Well I must not have tied my hood on securely enough as it went flying off once we started to get close to the Horeshoe Falls. I couldn't mess around with it though as I was focusing on keeping the cameras safe. Needless to say I got drenched. It added to the fun though and I was laughing like crazy. It was such a neat experience and hopefully I will get to do it again someday.

I definitely recommend that if you only do one thing when you go to Niagara Falls that you do the Maid of the Mist. It is a lot of fun and I don't think the price is too bad. I think it is $14 for an adult if you don't but the Adventure Pass.
There is an elevator that you can take back up to the top of the Gorge so you don't have to walk all the way back up afterwards if you don't want to. Of course you get dropped off in a dump shop where they have souvenir photos for sale that they take before you board the ship and all sorts of other touristy stuff. We bypassed all of that though and exited to find the PeopleMover bus stop as we were now off to the White Water Walk.

The Adventure Pass was about $40. White Water Walk isn't right there in the thick of things so I think it often gets overlooked. I really liked it though.

Great updates. Can you imagine that in all the times I have been to Niagra Falls I have never been on the Maid of the Mist? I was always too scared to go on, so I get where your friends were coming from.
Ever since seeing your pics I cant get going back there out of my mind, so my mom and I decided that if finances look good we will take a long weekend and go up there this fall.

We did not have to wait very long for the shuttle to arrive, I was surprised, it was really nice! There were only a few other people on the bus and they were all headed to the White Water Walk aka the Whirpool Rapids. The rapids are classed as Category 6, the highest level and are deemed to be unnavigable.
It was maybe 10-15 minute bus ride out to the rapids, they are not in the main tourist area which would explain why most people don't know about them.
Once we got dropped off we had to go into a little store where the shopkeeper is also the elevator operator. The elevator was so old, I kinda freaked thinking about having to ride in it!
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_8957.jpg
Once at the bottom you walk through a tunnel out to the rapids.

There is a wooden boardwalk you walk along that is about a 1/4 mile long. There were only a few people down there and it felt like we had the place to ourselves. It was very beautiful and a nice little walk.

I think we spent maybe 20-30 minutes down there, it was really nice and felt like we had discovered a hidden treasure.
We had to push a call button to alert the shopkeeper that we were ready to come back up and it took her about 10 minutes to arrive with the elevator.
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_9019.jpg
Now we just had to wait for the next shuttle to come and pick us up. We had 20 minutes to wait and right next to the bus stop was this really cool Buddhist temple/monastery.
A guy walking by saw us admiring the place and told us that it was open to visitors and that we could walk the grounds and go in the temple so long as we didn't take any indoor pictures. So that is exactly what we did.

We went into the temple and it was really cool. There were thousands of golden Buddha statues lining the walls. There was a monk in there praying so we did not want to disturb and so we quietly left.

OHHH! The Rapids! I've been there! In that uh.....skylift thing? That takes you above and across the rapids to the other side and back. Man...what is it called?
I'm definitely gonna check out the walk.
Oh my! I can't believe I've never seen that temple! Or at least I don't recall it...My family usually takes the earlier exit to Niagara, so we always pass by the rapids and the Giant Clock. But recently, I take the exit near Clifton Hill, so I've been missing it.
I must pay that place a visit. It's beautiful!

When we got back to the hotel Britt and Kyah just wanted to hang out in the room and watch tv. I couldn't do that, to me, if I want to just lay around and watch tv on vacation I'll just stay at home! :laughing: So I grabbed my camera and told the girls I was going out for a walk and to the Hershey Store.

I went back up to the room to drop them off as I didn't want the chocolate to melt.

I was starting to get hungry so I decided to head back to the hotel to see if Britt was back from the spa so we could all head out to dinner. This was our dress-up night as the girls wanted to head out to the bars/clubs after dinner.
We had dinner at the Rainforest Cafe and I felt a little odd eating there all dressed up but we didn't want to go back to the room afterwards.

Before leaving the museum you come to a hallway that says "Enter at your own risk" , of course we had to head down there.
It was meant to be super scary but I thought it was funny, Kyah was screaming the whole way through. :laughing:
Once out of the museum/ghost house we moved on up the hill to a martini bar called the Spicy Olive that our waiter had recommended to us, his friend's band was booked to play that night. We stayed there for a little while but it wasn't Britt's scene so she suggested we catch a cab over to the Dragonfly Nightclub at the Fallsview Casino. Once we got there Kyah and Britt decided they wanted to go to a strip club to see the male dancers. I told them there was no way I was doing that. Call me a prude but I just can't go to one of those places. They tried to convince me but there was no way I was changing my mind. I told them that they should go and that I would just go back to the hotel. It was getting close to midnight so I would just pack and go to sleep. Eventually I convinced them it would be okay to go off without me. We got a cab that dropped me off and then took them to the strip club. He was a very chatty cab driver and was going on about the history of the falls and we once again heard all about Marilyn Monroe shooting a movie there.
Back in the room I packed up all my stuff and then curled up in bed and watched an episode of Ghost Whisperer before falling asleep.
When Britt and Kyah got back they told me how the cab driver escorted them into the club and told the staff how it was their first time seeing strippers and how they should treat them nicely. :lmao: I think I would have died on the spot.
The next morning I was up bright and early again and went on one last walk.

http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu313/lifelongdreamer/Niagara%20Falls/IMG_9094.jpg
Kyah was still asleep when I got back so I decided to go for a swim, I had the place to myself. I miss being able to jump in the pool first thing in the morning. We had an inground pool when we lived in Virginia Beach and I definitely did not appreciate it until we moved away.
Once everybody was awake we jumped in the car and started our drive back. It was a good thing we were leaving that day as it started to pour.
We dropped Britt off at the airport in Toronto so that she could fly home and then we were home a few hours after that.
Overall I had a good time and I really love Niagara Falls and wouldn't mind going back someday.

Ahh Kingston, filled with students and prisoners. Is Princess street still under construction? It made it so inconvenient!

Ah, yes how could I forget about all that added colour, flavour, and ambiance that the college/university students and prisoners bring to our little town :lmao:
Yes, Princess St. is almost done :worship::worship::banana: In Fact Margaritaville ( Lone Star) is NOW REOPENED for business after the parking garage at Confederation Place collapsed (Hotel right next door). Last night after work about 10 of my co-workers headed over a refreshing drink or two, or three..... This is what mom does when the kids are away.:rolleyes1

Anytime Rosie, You are always welcome. Maybe you will find your Hot Italian :cool1: Kingston has a very large population of Greeks, Portugese and Italians, but first you will need to get a PASSPORT.
