View Full Version : 1BR snobs?

We have now made two great trips this year, staying in 1BR accommodations and loved them. Our group includes me, DW, DD11, and DD13.
We are currently booked in a studio next Easter week to save points during this high point season. But after staying in a 1BR, DW and I decided that we would rather not go on that trip if it meant staying in a studio.
We are going to cancel that trip and make our summer stay a little longer. We just decided that the extra room, full kitchen, washer and dryer, etc were too much a part of our enjoyment to "scrimp" on points and stay in a studio.
Now this is the same group that was very ecstatic to stay in a WL regular room a couple of times and no complaints. How quickly we become spoiled!!
I'm sure when we're empty-nested in a few years a studio will be a great choice for us, but with the kids......well, let's just say it wouldn't fulfill the luxury accommodation requirement that we wanted when we joined DVC. How spoiled is that?
And here's the kicker to all of this.....we are considering using those cancelled studio points to get a 2BR for the four of us next year to get the extra bathroom and space. Will we then become 2BR snobs, never to be happy with less????
I feel an add-on coming on!!:earseek:

Well join the rest of us snobs. DW won't even consider a studio. I am even considering a 2 BR for the 2 of us. Like that extra bath. That will really be the ultimate in snobbery.
You need to try the 1 BR at OKW some time.

To one snob,
THAT'S exactly why we have avoided the 1 bedrooms so far. We KNOW how quickly we become snobs, so we're trying to behave ourselves.
If I were you, I would resist the 2 bedroom with everything you've got!!!! Cuz you KNOW there is no going back then!
Even our DD (7) is becoming a bit of a hotel snob now. We spent 3 nights at Big Cedar last week and then moved to a residence inn for 2 nights in the interest of points (DH had racked up the marriott points this year). She walked in, looked around and said, "I like Big Cedar better".
Ahhhhh, remember those good old days when a holiday inn was living well???
From another,

We have used the 2 bedrooms when taking family but we, actually, find the 1 bedroom to be a "waste" of extra points when it is just the 2 of us and our 2 little ones. The studio works great for our family. That is just another thing that makes the DVC great...flexibility and various choices for different tastes. We are point savers whenever possible so we can stay longer.

I'm with you Granny! DH and I just knew we'd have to have the one bedroom, even though most trips it's just the two of us. Once I saw that tub in the model, we knew we'd better get enough points to book one bedrooms instead of studios!

We have been members since early 1999 and have not even tried or thought of using a studio. We love the extra space and always get at least a 1BR even if it is just my wife and I.
We have also used the GV's at OKW and HH, and we can't wait to try the Beach Cottages at VB next year.If we wanted to conserve and have a "small hotel type room", we wouldn't have joined DVC.

We also have become spoiled. We live only 2 hrs away from WDW & if we're only there for 1 night we'll slum & stay in a Studio but now that we've been doing the 1 BR with our 2 DS's(12 & 14) there isn't much turning back. Our boys have also become spoiled over the years. One time we stayed at a hotel that didn't have bell or valet service & they were apalled. I ope all of our children get their educations and good jobs so they can continue this lifestyle we've all taught them.
The 2 BR at HH was great when we were there last year. We haven't come to to the point where we get 2 BR's all the time, think this is a definite waste of points for the 4 of us but when we take friends or family we do.

We have been members for 10 years now and I have yet to personally stay in a studio. My father went down once and stayed in a studio and when we went down in a big group a couple times, we got a 2 bedroom and a studio. Of course the people staying the studio were usually 'visiting' us in our 2 bedroom.. ;)
But I have yet to try a studio. Of course, I have yet to try a DVC resort other than OKW too.. Maybe someday there will be a first for both...

We must be snobs too.... so much so that DH and I are getting a 1 bedroom for our trip this September.... for just the two of us. I justify it, by saying we want to check out the 1 bedroom layouts at BWV.... but really I love the extra room.... it is a real treat!
We are lucky, we have the points to get a 2 bedoom 2 or 3 times a year..... We will still do regular Disny Resorts just because i have to stay at all of them, but the bulk of our stays is DVC all the way!

I have spent a couple night in a studio when just me and my daughter went.
We stay in the GV with two couples and the common kids. It is often another couple with one kid. We get our own room, the other couple gets their own room, the kids get the third, personally, I couldn't imagine doing it any other way.

There are only 4 of us on vacation, myself, DH, DS and a buddy of his that has always come on vacation with us. We, too, thought we got spoiled with the 1 bedroom. Unfortunately, this last trip in May there were other family members traveling at WDW and we thought we'd want to entertain in the livingroom and didn't want to be climbing over teenagers luggage (or sleeping teenagers, LOL). So we got a 2 bedroom for the 4 of us.
Now we're completely ruined. The 2nd bathroom, the ability to enjoy the livingroom all were wonderful. I now have directives from DH and the boys to get us a 2 bdrm for the next vacation. What's next, a GV so the boys can each have a bedroom?
You can never go back.

I have switched many times from a 1 bedroom to a studio and then back again, and I don't mind the studios at all. My DH prefers a studio to a 1 bedroom, as he feels for us it's a waste of points. (We don't need a lot of room.) And staying in a studio will allow a nice looong vacation next year--2 weeks in Dec and 4 weeks in Jan/Feb--all in a studio. To each their own--that's the beauty of DVC! :D
(I will admit to being a "studio snob"--I find it difficult to stay in a regular hotel room without my kitchenette!)

I dunno....our first DVC trip was in a 2-bdrm, the next was in a studio, and our Oct. stay will either be a studio or a 1-bdrm. The bigger villas *are* nice, but for us, not a necessity, at least not yet. ;)

Obviously, "1BR snob" is a tongue in cheek kind of phrase...nobody is suggesting that the studios are not great values. So I hope nobody is offended by this lighthearted (but unfortunately true) thread.
But I can now see how people who stay in a larger accommodation develop this feeling that they "need" to stay in that size from now on. I think its a DVD plot to sell more add-ons!
Richyams....I was wondering if we'd hear from you since we know you really focus on the grand villas. Lord help me if I ever become a "grand villa snob".
And MdmMim....I like the phrase "studio snob". I know what you mean about the kitchenette. I remember asking about renting a small refrigerator when we stayed at WL the first time....my gosh, for what they wanted to charge we could have bought one and thrown it away at the end of the trip and still come out ahead!
And mikesmom...I think it's that second bathroom that could really sink me if we stay in a 2BR. With me and three females, bathroom space seems to be at quite a premium!

Don't be worried about Rich! How could anyone who has "common kids" ever be any kind of a snob? :p:) :p
I am a resort snob in that I will only stay on WDW property when I am at WDW. But I am definitely not a 1 BR snob. The majority of my trips are myself and another adult, we eat out every meal but a light breakfast in the room, we are staying in a deluxe DVC resort with room service and every other amenitity we could want and are minutes from parks and restaurants--a studio is perfect for me. Also by getting a studio I can get twice as many trips out of my pts so instead of going on 2 trips a year it is now 4. Every three months I am more than happy to stay in a DVC studio in the land of Mickey! Works like a charm for me!

We haven't even stayed at a DVC resort yet and we are snobs. We knew ourselves and bought enough points to be able to stay in a 2 bedroom for the 4 of us. Part of the reason is that I have a boy and a girl that won't be able to sleep in the same bed for too much longer (they are 5 and 6). So hows that for a snob, haven't even stayed yet and can't go back.

I smell a 100 pt add on.;)
Granny, let me know when your end up like us and hit 6 add-ons in a year!!! We kept doing the what if we want/need a 1BR/2BR senarios until we settled on just the right number of points. We stayed at HH in Jan in a 2 BR and decided we needed enough points there for a 2 BR every summer. The WDW resorts (VWL and BCV) we've decided we'll be OK in a 1BR.......... unless we bring extended family. We've only mentiond the word studio if we were staying a short stay and were going to eat out a lot. We really make use of the kitchen. Nothing like some crispy corned beef hash before a big day at the parks.:p
Good luck with your add-on ;) Johnnie

   Pick me!!! Pick me!!!!! Add my name to the "1BR Snob List". Stayed in a studio at OKW once, and while it was great, and much better than a regular hotel room because of the little kitchenette area, DH and I still do a 1BR, and it's just us, no kids. We are going to get more points, so we can do a 1BR more often!!!!

There's just the two of us now (retired), and even though a Studio would work out just fine, we still prefer the 1-B/R simply because it feels more like 'home'.
When points are tight or it's high season, we'll get a studio, but mostly only if it's BWV, VWL or BCV because I feel their studios feel more like 'suites' like you'd find in some other hotels.
Even though we're OKW owners, we don't especially like the OKW studios, even though they're physically larger than the other resorts. The double beds just makes it seem too much like a hotel room. (I know, they're not, but with the kitchenette and bath tucked away back in the corner, the "room" part with the two beds feels like a hotel)
But for 1-B/R villas, OKW can't be beat. For us the best use of points is a 1-B/R at OKW, or a studio at any of the other WDW resorts. When it's more low point seasons, then we want a 1-B/R no matter where we're at.

I don't know that "snobs" is the best word. Maybe we realize that life is too short to scrimp on a much-deserved vacation.

joepoe...I think we're poking a little fun at ourselves by using the word snob. I originally used it because evidently a number of DISers on other boards seem to think the DVC people are snobs! So rather than get upset with them, we take it in stride and have some fun with it.
You are right, I think most DVC members came to the conclusion that quality vacations are an important priority in their life.
But back to the thread topic. I really am worried about that first stay in a 2BR will make it hard to go back. It's that second bathroom, I'm telling you....I can see it now. It won't help me much (I still have to go down to the lobby when I need it), but prying my DW and two daughters away from the 2BR will be like trying to take a piece of meat from starving lions!
I'll let you guys know when we get that add on going!

I gotta say the peace and harmony that you will experience with 2 bedrooms/bathrooms, for your girls.... is well worth the cost of an add on!!! Trust me! :teeth:

I hear you!!! We stayed in a studio one time after staying in the larger units, and decided it wouldn't happen again!! Now we go down with 4 people in a 2 bedroom and stay longer for one big trip instead of two week long trips. Yep, spoiled!!!

We make two trips to OKW each year, and always stay in a 1-br. About 6 months after we joined we stayed in our first 1-br with our neice, and we've never looked back :)
Last August was our 25th anniversary, so we decided to do a long weekend on our anniversary weekend. Only three nights, we thought, so we'll do a studio.
Before we even got to bed the first night we were moaning and groaning about what a dumb idea that was! For the two of us it's 1-br forever! :sunny:
P.S. Of course we're spoiled -- we're DVC Members :)

And the most spoiled of all is the 2 bedroom at OKW. Because of a split stay we ended up using the 2 bedroom both at BWV and OKW. Now we love our "home" at BWV and the boys (age 19) LOVE being where all the action is, but oh my, there was a lot of room in that OKW 2 bedroom!

Count me as one of the "snobs" too. We stayed in a studio our first two trips to OKW because we didn't know better - we always stayed in a "hotel" room. We went to the one bdrm and now can't stand anything less. In June we stayed in an off-site hotel for three nights (part of another timeshare thing - disaster) and couldn't wait to move into our one bdrm at OKW for the rest of the stay. I get up earlier than the rest (DW and two teenagers) and it is no fun having coffee in a dark room and cramped space while thay sleep. My snobship doesn't just apply to DVC though. We need to stay in one bdrms where ever we go.
To Laura - my other Big Cedar pal - we will be at Big Cedar Wilderness Club Friday in a two bdrm cabin - can't wait.

HI! My name is Pin, and I am a 1 bedroom "snob" ;)
I never thought I would say that, seeing how I USED to be so happy just staying at WDW at an All Star, but boy has DVC made a changed woman out of me.
Right now I have a studio booked at the BVCs for next Easter for just the DH and myself. We just returned from a wonderful stay in a 2 bedroom with 4 other friends there. After that stay, I am almost convinced to change my studio into a 1 bedroom. Ahhh the thoughts of sinking into that Jacuzzi after a day at the parks and a dinner at the YSH................
I'm even thinking about starting the vacation in the studio and spending the last day or two in the 1 bedroom. Decisons, decisons.....
Right now I have a call into my guide to do an add on there. I doubt if I will EVER have enough points....
Is there a support group out there for people like me?;)

We on the other hand have never stayed in anything bigger than a studio yet. We do not feel the need to currently IMHO waste extra points on something we only sleep in.
This is not intended to offend any of you, as I'm sure that when my son is older we will to join the 1 bdrm crowd, but at the moment I would be to a certain extent not making the best use of my points.
Add me to the list. Just changed our BWV studio to less nights at BCV in a 1 bedroom. We also want that "homey" feel and just don't feel that we'll get it out of a studio. Besides, the thought of coming home with dirty laundry was starting to get to me. Now all of the suitcases will be packed with clean clothes!!

We always stay in a studio and that seemed fine, but on our last trip they upgraded us to a 1 bedroom and we will probably never be able to go back to a studio again. I feel an add on and coming.
DDs are now 10& 11 and we could definitely use the aded space and the convenience of the washer and dryer.:earsgirl:

Imagine having your first stay in a GV!!!! and then having to size down. Our first stay was with some friends and we had just joined and had two years worth of points so we booked a GV at OKW. Boy that was heaven. Now we don't do anything but a 2 bedroom. Someday I will get back to the GV, but you have to try one once. We can live with a studio when it's just my hubby and me for a short time. We usually eat out or sit by the pool and down those pina colada's, who needs a kitchen. But with the kids, two girls, one 15 and one 21, definitely need the second bath.
My kids hate a regular hotel room now. We do a lot of traveling with my daughters soccer team up and down the east coast and she hates staying in a regular room. SPOILED to the gills.
Add us to the 'snob' list.

Same thing happened when we joined. Two year's worth of points. By the second day of the stay, we realized the we were going to need the GV every year, so we added 200 points during that first stay in '93.

Hi Granny,
Funny you mention that we stayed in a 2bdrm last year with friends that are dvc'ers and thus became ones ourselves. This year we stayed in a 2bdrm with friends as the dvc owners.
When DH and I took the Tour we talked about all we would need is a studio as there are only 3 of us. To tell you the truth, I would rather invite people to come with us to justify the extra space than ever stay in anything else.
Have a great day,

I bet all those "2BR snobs" out there are laughing their heads off at us in this thread! "Oh look, Lovey, they're all getting such a thrill out of their 1BR's!"
I carefully planned out the economics of staying in studios before buying. But as a newcomer six months out I put myself on a waiting list for either a studio or 1BR. The 1BR came up first, so that's what we've got. Will we go back to a studio next year? It would be a hard sell....

DH and I stayed in a studio last Oct. and really enjoyed. Even managed to fix a few meals in the micro! Loved having the extra space and DH liked having the sofa instead of the extra bed. This Oct we're booked in a 1-bdrm at BCV and are really looking forward to joining the ranks of "snobdom" :p :p
I know DH is going to love the jacuzzi, that was a selling point for him.
Many on these boards have told me we'll never go back! Am anxious to see!!

Ah, yes....we'll stay in a studio to save points, or to make a trip longer....but that 1br can't be beat.
I can see a day when its just me and dh....where we might get a studio....but before that day comes we'll be needing a 2br because we don't want to be bothered with the fold out in the living room, and we have a girl and a boy who are 5 years apart in age! So we'll probably have plenty of points by then to just go ahead and always stay in the 1br.
Yep, I'm spoiled like crazy......and I like it! Call me a snob if you want....lol.....I'll be in the jacuzzi tub!;)

When we joined in 1997 we had every intention of staying in a studio when it was just the two of us. Our first DVC trip was OKW 2 bedroom with another couple. We wanted to keep the living room area available for relaxing etc. and provide everyone with privacy and their own bathroom, so we opted to reserve the 2 bedroom. BIG mistake, we are SO SPOILED we have NEVER stayed in a studio! If just the two of us, always a one bedroom. If we bring along another couple, always a 2 bedroom. We've never been more than a party of 4, but I know that if we decided to bring along 6 people, we'd be trying to reserve a grand villa. Altough we don't do much cooking in the room, we just love the relaxing atmosphere and "at home" feeling the villas provide. The washer/dryer allows us to pack very light..a great bonus when dragging stuff through the airports! We've added on points twice to support our "one bedroom" habit!
It's really tough to stay in a regular hotel room since joining DVC.
A snob? No, Spoiled? Yes -- and enjoying every minute of it!
Hey, this is your vacation....go for that 2 bedroom...but you're right, you'll never go back to a 1 bedroom again!

One bedroom are great, can't do any better than the super size bathroom.
We have boy and girl 6 and 10. Very hard to put them in a queen sleeper. I wish OKW had cots. We used an areo bed one year, but the kids fought over the pull out.
The 2 bedroom are almost too big for 4 people, but we need the beds.

There are three of us (adults) and we always stay in a 2 BR. The space and privacy is worth the points. We had a GV for 5 nights to our selves when friends couldn't stay the whole time with us, just did not want to switch. We will be in a VB beach cottage in 43 more days. Can't hardly wait.

I think there's a natural progression. My first Disney resort was Port Orleans (now French Quarter) back in early 1992. At that point, I was happy with staying onsite.....so much that I never stayed offsite since.
Over the next couple years, I had booked All Stars, and if I have a choice, I'd avoid them over getting a moderate. I've also repeated my moderate resort stays, but had a deluxe thrown into the mix.
Now, if I can get a great AP rate on a deluxe.....I won't stay at a moderate. LOL!
The kicker: I bought into BCV during the pre-sale in February, and I'm not going "home" for the first time until December.
I do have a trip to the Polynesian coming up in three weeks, and I just *know* that DVC will spoil me silly.
In December, I'm staying my first two nights (Friday and Saturday) at the Wilderness Lodge, courtyard view (AP rate), then the next three nights at Old Key West (studio), and then the next five nights (including the weekend this time....go figure!) in a 1 BR villa at my "home" resort......Beach Club Villas!
I know that my only non-DVC resorts from now on will be during weekends, paying cash. :)

When we bought into DVC, we made a trip to WDW and stayed at VWL in a 1-BR for 3 nights. I had planned on doing the studio for the first few years and then moving up to the 1-BR, possibly with an add-on. We loved the 1-BR so much that DW never even wants to try a studio! ;)
Our first trip was in a 2-bedroom with our 2 girls and we have never even thought of staying in anything smaller unless it is just the 2 of us. With 2 teenage girls we definitely need the extra room and bathroom. I love having the livingroom free for early morning coffee and late night drinks. When my husband and I go we always get a 1-bedroom. I think that we would really miss the tub and the laundry area if we went with a studio. And yes, we are part of the group that rents a grand villa when there is only 6 of us. We did that just this past May when my sister and her husband joined us for the week. It probably wasn't fair since that was my sister's first trip to WDW. They ended up members before we came home.:D

IMHO the studio doesn't even compare to the one bedroom. My DH & I love the full kitchen in the one bedroom. It makes life easier for us to feed our DD 6, DS 3 & DS 3 mths. It has most of the comforts of home. The two bedroom is nice but if you are trying to save points & there's four people the one bedroom should be fine.
