Does anyone know what this means: 'crown - porcelain fuse high noble metal'?
The dentist told DH he was using metal since it was for a molar. When you look at the tooth all you see is metal. The insurance company says that the dentist used porcelain which costs more and is considered cosmetic on a back tooth. Is it possible that porcelain is under the metal?
I'm hoping someone can help me out before I start my round of phone calls to the dentist and insurance company again tomorrow.
Thanks,
Jeannie

I have gold crowns, mainly because the dentist said they're stronger & the insurance pays the same amount - whether its porcelain or gold. (I broke a porcelain one, so he had to replace it with a gold one - you can see it a little when I smile.)
Good luck getting it straightened out.

I am in the process of having a crown put on. The description you gave sounds like what I am getting, a porcelain crown with high noble metal (gold). However, mine is gold on the inside with tooth colored porcelain on the outside. It is a molar but my DMO pays 80% so that was no biggie. It sounds to me like the description and what your DH received are two different things.
Good luck!

I think ALL the metal, if any, is UNDER the porcelain or, onlay. Molar or not, they work wonders and, Look Great! Hope it works! :)

That does not make sense:confused: . All mine are porcelain on top of the metal. They look like a real tooth, they even match the porcelain to my exact tooth color. I am in the process of getting a broken crown replaced:( . Call your Dentist and see what is going on! Even my temporary looks like a tooth:teeth:

....and asked the woman who does the billing to explain the type of crown my DH got. She tells me metal underneath, porcelain on top so that it matches the other teeth. Nope, sorry, I tell her. It is all gold - no porcelain. Oh, well it doesn't matter she says, it still costs the same. She tells me she will talk to the dentist and then call me back. That was 4 hours ago. I'm still waiting..............
