Today I sat on the treelawn outside my house -- camera in hand, of course. ;) I was determined to get a picture of Mom & Dad Bird feeding their babies. I've spotted it a few times over the last few days, but have not had my camera with me when it's occured. It's been such a cool moment that I wanted to share it with all of you! I figured if I camped out, I might finally catch it on film. And I did! (The key word being "finally" -- I waited for an hour before they decided it was time for "lunch"! Yep. I know what you're all thinking: "My name is KaraKW, and I am a bird-a-holic." ;)) Seriously, though, I've been enjoying the bird-watching! :)

Note - Sorry that the quality of the pictures isn't as great as usual. I had to use a different camera in order to get the zoom I needed from that distance.

This picture is what I call the "All Clear" -- Dad was checking out the area before he ducked under the porch roof and began to feed the little ones!

<img src="http://www.russellwray.com/kara/Feeding-4.jpg">

Dad and Mom take turns feeding, but as you can see, the birdies are impatient for Mom's arrival!
<img src="http://www.russellwray.com/kara/Impatience-2.jpg">

"Decisions! Decisions!" Which little mouth to feed first?
<img src="http://www.russellwray.com/kara/Feeding-5.jpg">

<img src="http://www.russellwray.com/kara/Feeding-7.jpg">

Now well-fed, one birdie stretches his wings before he resumes his nap. By the look of those wings, he'll be flying soon!! :o
<img src="http://www.russellwray.com/kara/Stretching-Wings.jpg">

Zzzzzzzzz! ;)

As always,
Your Bird Correspondent,
KaraKW :wave:

What a WONDERFUL series of pictures, Kara. I can't believe you actually caught all that on film!!! Incredible!!! Are you going to sit out on the treelawn with your camera and wait for the first flying lesson??? I know all of us on the DIS will be sorry to see those little ones fly away.

Do you plan to "camp out" when they are ready for fledge too? That would be a cool picture if you could get it! A picture of a baby leaving the nest for the first time!

Thanks Kara for sharing those pictures with all of us. Just unbelievable how mother nather works. Those birds are growing in leaps and bounds and like kids they will go on there own soon. I wonder if they end up coming back to mom and dad when the going gets rough. LOL :bounce: :bounce::Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Laurabearz -- LOL!

As for the question of camping out when the birds begin their flight lessons, I will endeavor to do what I can. I don't feel my bird "documentary" would be complete without pictures of that great event , but I can only hope that timing will work out fortuitously, in terms of me being in the right place at the right time!!

I'm going to be keeping a keen eye out, though, because I suspect that time is drawing near -- especially with the way that one bird was stretching his wings out!!!

No they can't leave the nest. Quick build a cage!;)

What happens next? Do they build their own nests nearby? Do mom and dad already have a second nest built that they sleep in. Do they only lay eggs in the nest and use the nest for the birdlings, but the adults don't need nests, they just sleep on their feet all night? Is that what the babies will do? Fly away and sleep on their feet all night? :confused: :confused: :confused: Anyone know? :teeth:

LOL, kejoda!! :D

Maggie -- it's funny you should ask about that, because today I surfed the internet in an attempt to find out what would happen "next"... Here's what I found:

BRANCHERS are fully feathered and tend to want to stand on the edge of the nest or a nearby branch (thus their name). They often fall, jump, are pushed or predated. (The parents will feed them even if they aren’t in the nest.)

FLEDGLINGS are ready to leave the nest. This is a natural event, and it doesn’t matter how many times you put them in the nest, they will immediately jump out. They don’t fly well for the first day or two. The parents will lead them to nearby bushes for cover, and will feed them, show them how to hunt for food, and how to recognize predators – including humans.

Thanks for the information Kara! I kinda knew that about fledglings. We always see baby birds on the ground around here. I called the wildlife center one time to see what to do about the babies on the ground (I thought the ferral cats were getting them). They explained to me to leave them alone. Even though they look abandoned, their parents are nearby and taking good care of them.

What I wonder is, once they fly, do they search out their own territory? Do they build nest for themselves or just for laying eggs. Will they stay with their parents for awhile? Aren't I a pain? :teeth: :earseek: :teeth:
