Know of anyone whose hair type has totally changed during their teens? I might expect darker and oily, but this it totally different. Oldest DS is 15 and in the past year his hair has gone from medium brown, thick, course, and slightly wavy to almost blonde, very course, and downright curly! It's driving him crazy and he keeps getting it cut very short, but no matter how little there is it still curls.
It isn't the end of the world, of course, but I wondered if anyone else (maybe stylists) had heard of this.
On a funny side note, the other guys in the trombone section in his H.S. band told him it can't be helped. When you start playing T-bone you start looking weird:crazy:

My middle DS's hair changed during this time also.
He used to have poker straight cornsilk hair, and it's now a lot more coarse and it has a wave to it!!

<font color=navy>Ahh, those 'supportive band friends' ;)
My dd's hair changed - it went from very fine, straight, smooth-as-a-curtain hair, to thick, wavy, needs-to-be-managed hair....

My sister's hair changed about that time. When she was little, she had hair that was mostly straight with just a little wave. Now it's incredibly curly.

LOL, my hair didn't change at all. But my oldest. LOLOLOL She went from stick straight, it wouldn't hold a curl if you left the roller in, to looking like she's had a spiral perm that needs help. It's great when she just washes it and combs it once. After that it isn't so great anymore.
Her hair used to be all blonde, now the top is blonde, but she has dark roots and she hasn't ever bleached it, the underneath is turning red.
She doesn't know what to do with it.

 You guys are frightening me! I like my kids hair the way it is now! 7 yr old DD's is blond and straight, like mine. DS's(11) is dirty blond and straight. I have never heard of this!
DS and DD both had thin straight hair up to about age 11. Then their hair became very, very curly; almost wiry. Fine for DS but it drove DD nuts until she grew it very long and learned how to blow dry it straight.

As a stylist I have seen several kids hair change during puberty.

I wasnt quite in my teens but, yes, my hair changed. When I was young my hair was straight as an arrow and fairly thin. Around age 10 it started getting wavy, frizzy, and THICK! I get so sad when I see old pictures of me because I would kill for that hair now.

Hey, if it makes your son feel better, I'm a 17-year-old girl and I love curly hair on guys. He should be proud. ;)
My hair was always curly but it did curl a little more when I hit puberty. I bet it's pretty common.

Yep, this happened to one of my sons.
As a child he had white-blonde, silky, straight hair. It's now a dark brown, very, very corse and very curly. In junior high, when it started to change, his friends used to say it looked like a bird's nest (see, band friends aren't the only ones who are supportive, LOL!).
Last year he stopped cutting it, and grew an afro to rival anything from the 70's! I thought it looked horrible but just bit my tongue until it almost bled. He finally cut it short again before we had a family portrait taken and he is back to keeping it short. I think he realized how much easier it was to deal with short.

My hair didn't get lighter, but it sure got more curl as I hit my teens. I got a perm when I was 14 and wondered why a year later my hair still seemed curly (my hair never held perms for more than two months before then). I realized later it had gotten much much thicker and curlier. Even now at 25 it is getting more coarse and more curly as time goes on.
