Good Morning Everyone.
Numbers for March 126.7 miles.
Ashleigh: Glad you enjoyed your extra time with DS. Have fun with the new stroller.
Shan: Enjoy your trip to WDW. What a great deal on the GA Marathon.
Jeanne: Enjoy the sunshine. You still have plenty of time to ramp up your miles before October. Slowly but surely and you'll get there.
Jason: I hope the training for the 5K is going well. It is fun to run the same race for a second year to mark your progress.
Lauren: Hope the allergies are behaving.
Suzanne: Have you decided where to go for your family vacation? We started a list recently because it hit me that with my son turning 8 we really have only 10 more summer vacations before he is out and on his own. Scary. On our list are: NYC, DC, Grand Canyon, NC Outer Banks, Canadian Rockies, Hawaii, Alaska. I'm not sure we'll get to them all, but it's nice to think about it.
Megan: Hope all is well.
Joanne: Congrats on working at the Marathon. I agree, I hope I don't see you either, at least in a medical capacity.
Angie: How cool that you make your own maple syrup. I've always wanted to do that, but since we have only 1 or 2 maples in our yard I don't think it would be worthwhile. Now if I could find something to do with acorns or pinecones I'd be in business.
I rearranged my schedule this week to get my long run in on Sunday since the weather forecast was for torrential rain for Monday. Thank goodness I did. I had a wonderful 20 mile run in sunny and cool temps. I am now officially in taper mode for Boston. Unfortunately I sometimes translate taper for slacker and I am having a hard time getting motivated to finish off the training. I put off my tempo run from yesterday partly because I was pressed for time, more so because it was still raining. Today's forecast is much better, so I am planning on getting out there at lunchtime.
Have a great day everyone.

I haven't posted in a while and I need to get caught up on older posts :)
Things are going GREAT! I am pretty happy with my miles in March.
30 miles walking/running plus 4.5 hours XT (18 miles) = 48 miles total! :cool1:
My conservative C25K is going really, really well. Today was the last week of phase 2, or W8D3. I made the transition from running in 30 second segments to 1 minute segments this week since the run/walk times were same as last week. I am still amazed at how I notice improvement at each and every session. :thumbsup2
As for the "side effect" results, I was down 8 pounds as of Monday and I have lost a full size. :yay:

Hey everyone!
March miles: 44 *bleh*
I've been pushing myself on my speed and I've gotten up to running a ten minute mile for a little while (a very little while) before I have to drop back down. Good progress I thought. But I woke up this morning with knee pain, which I've never had before. I wanted to get you all thoughts? Man up, take some Advil and run today anyway, or leave it alone and see what it does? Just wanted tos ee what the more experienced folks though. :goodvibes
Todd: You were in the hospital?! :scared1: How did I miss that? Glad you're back home now!
Here's to this month being better than last for all of us! :yay:

OK, back to the real world, or at least home. I didn't work today, but I grocery shopped for Easter dinner, etc. and did other errands. I did get in 1000 meters at the pool and a 20 minute wog (jog 3, walk 2). I'm 5 days in to my self-imposed, self-directed tri training camp and I've made every workout and every distance in the plan. The real test will come next week when I return to my regularly scheduled life!
So here is my drama... I bought new running shoes last week. They are the 'next generation' model of my old shoes. I loved my old shoes, but I didn't buy the new ones blindly. I went to a real running store, with real runner salespeople. I tried on other shoes. I ran on the treadmill in the store. I did all the 'right' things. Well, today was my first wog...and my right foot cramped up something fierce. Ugh! Now I'm afraid that I spent $120 on shoes that aren't right.
Suzanne: Where are you thinking about vacationing? I've lived in every corner of the country (at least once) and been across it several times (East-West or West-East on 3 different routes, and N-S or S-N on each coast), so chances are I've been there. We turn our cross-country moves into vacations with stops along the way, so we've seen a lot! In fact, I actually counted and in 2007, my family visited 17 states (including Alaska and Hawaii)!

Sorry I've been away for so long, my Goofy friends. I coulda sworn I posted here about the Princess Half, but in reading back over the March thread, it appears I failed to do that.
Here's my long overdue race report: I was slightly injured (sore left shin) so I RICEd it for 2 solid weeks prior to race day. The leg was sore on race morning so I set my sights on simply finishing the race, slapped on some Biofreeze and made my way to Corral B. (That's right, B! It was amazing to almost be able to see the staging area for a change!) Since I was in B, my plan to do a 2.5:1 run/walk ratio and shoot for just a "don't get swept" time goal flew out the window. Much like Suzanne, I think I also ran the first mile without a walk break, but mostly because I didn't want to cause a 10-person pile-up when I stopped to walk.
The shin felt OK once we got moving, so I started having delusions of possibly beating my PR. But I stopped for lots of photos and developed both sore hip flexors and epic blisters. So despite having a goal of just finishing, I ended up pushing myself -- while still counter-productively stopping for photos --- and then felt disappointed when I missed my PR by 4:13. Therefore, I crossed the finish line with lots of mixed emotions. But the good news is I shattered my "course record" by over 25 minutes.
The blisters and still-present shin soreness have kept me away, but I think I'm slowly getting back on track. I'm assistant-coaching a Couch to 5K program with TNT, so that's getting me out there at least once a week. My total March miles, even after doubling for the Princess, come to 30.7 (not counting the theme park walking I did during our WDW vacation).
Welcome to the newest Goofs and congrats to all on your March miles. I hope we're all healthy (esp Todd ) and can be as active as we'd like to be this month. Enjoy the spring weather!

Hello Goofs!!
I am in the process of updating miles for March so if you have any to report, please post them!! So far, I have miles from Maura, M, Jeannette, Lauren, Kim, Cindy, Jason, Shan, Rich, Angie, Jeanne, Ashleigh and Todd.
Spring is here and all of my beautiful flowers are in bloom! I took a picture of my front yard yesterday and will share it later. Here in Florida, we go from Spring to Summer very quickly and then its too hot for most flowers so I love the few weeks inbetween.
As for vacation, we are almost decided. On the short list, Alaska, Hawaii or fly to Baltimore and take an 8 night cruise with stops in Canada, Maine and Boston. Hawaii is in the top 3 on my life list so we are most likely headed in that direction. Next summer, we are going back to NYC for my daughter's 16th birthday by her request. We were there last summer and she loved it!! I promised her a cake/cupcake/pastry from Carlo's bakery in NJ (the Cake Boss guy from TV) on her birthday.
17 years ago today my husband and I got married and both families said it wouldn't last!! How long have each of you been married??
Two races coming up for me, a 10K on the 17th that benefits the Susan G Komen breast cancer foundation and a 5K on May 1st that benefits Habitat for Humanity. Whats on your race schedule?

Good afternoon Goofs!
Got out this morning to a 15 mile run. I don't know how long it took, unfortunately - it was raining, so I hit "lap" at the halfway point, took the Garmin off, and put it in the Camelbak. Within a minute or so, the "stop" button must have been pressed, because it recorded nothing beyond that. Oh well. I can double the distance easily enough, and I recorded the time when I finished, so a little math will give me the time for the leg back. It was definitely slower, because it rained more, and it was into the wind. Fun run though.

Hawaii is beautiful - we went to Maui and Oahu. I lived in Alaska for 5 years, so ask away if your travel plans take you there!
Happy Anniversary Suzanne! How long have I been married? Almost exactly 15.5 years. Next week will be 16 years since we were engaged. No one said it wouldn't last (at least to our faces) but we did get a lot of "Aren't you young?" We were 21 & 22 when we were engaged, but we had been together for 5 years, graduated from college, had real grown-up jobs and had moved away from home (almost 4,000 miles from home!), so we weren't sure what else we were supposed to wait for. :) We got married on my 22nd birthday.
Race sched: two tris later in the summer - SheRox Philly 8/1 and Nations Tri 9/12 & I'll be running hte WDW Half again in January. DH is running a tri in July and DS11 wants to run one or two sprints. He would like for me to run a sprint with him again this year, but I think that is mostly because he smoked me on the run last year. The kid runs 7 minute miles!

Hi all! Hope everyone is ready for a lovely holiday with their families! I am...and as an added bonus, it's my birthday, too!
I got my new jogging stroller yesterday. We took DS to the zoo in it yesterday afternoon and I loved it for that! I was going to go out for a run with it this afternoon as it was 84 degrees outside and DS would stay warm, but then a cold front moved in and the winds were gusting and blowing dirt all over the place and the temp dropped to 56! So we had summer this morning and then spring this afternoon. Needless to say, I did not take the jogger out for my run. And my run was not much fun...at least the parts when I was running into the wind! Running the other way was nice, though! I am in week 4 of C25K and it is going great! I have repeated a few weeks because when I do the week once, I focus on increasing my endourance. When I repeat the week I work on increasing my speed. It has been working out really well for me, so I think I will stick with it.
Have a nice Easter tomorrow all you Goofs!

Hey Goofs, remember me? It's probably been close to a month now since I've posted. Sorry about that but life has been insanely busy lately. I had to put in a lot of hours at work before our trip to Los Angeles last month. After I got back, I've been struggling to get caught up. With all the projects here, I've been putting in a lot of hours from home too which has killed my DIS time. Things should be slowing down in the next two weeks and life can hopefully get back to normal.
We had a fun time in LA though. We got to go to Disneyland and DCA a day each and competed in my first super sprint triathlon just before coming home.
I doubled those miles and with my other miles I had 98.8 for March. I wish I could have done a lot more but my workout time has been limited lately too.
I'll try to catch up on past posts but just wanted to wish you all well and say hi to our new members.
Take care everyone! Talk to you soon.

Lauren Hope your knee is feeling better. My answer to your question of wheteher to run is "It depends". I know that I get occasional aches/pains (like onset of IT band issues or strained tendon/ligaments) and I can run through those. The key is--I don't have any pain or discomfort when I run. If I do, then I don't (run, that is!) A day or two of rest won't mess up your training schedule, so take it off.
M Can you take the shoes back? If ou've only run in them once, I would like to think the store would be accommodating.
Kim Congrats! That's still a good results for you. I hear you about the pciture thing and burning time--I have never stopped for pictures at any of the Disney races I have done. Too concerned abut my time.
Jason Swing sets are a killer (and taking them down is no fun either--but don't think about that !) Good luck for finishing.
Suzanne Happy belated anniversary. My DH and I have been married 25 years---and he still doesn't like DIsney!
Rich 15 miles...is this marathon training?
Steve Glad to see you back. I was doing some advance scouting for my DL trip yesterday. Trying to deicde whether I want to splurge and stay at one of the DL hotels. I hate to say it, but I can't get too excited by the thought 'cause they seem so ordinary and not "resort-y" like WDW. I guess I'm spoiled by all the landscaping/scenery/space at WDW.
As for me.
Went cycling yesetrday and 8 miles today (which were tired). Easter dinner prep starts soon and.....

Suzanne - Happy belated anniversary. DW and I have been married almost 11 years, and together for about 13.
Maura - Yep. I have the Illinois Marathon next month. I am woefully undertrained for it, but a couple good weekends will turn it less into a death slog and more into a decent run.

Joanne, that is awesome that you'll be in the med tent at the Boston finish line! DH volunteered at both Boston and Marine Corps when he was in podiatry school. I asked if he had any advice for you, and he said to bring a lighter and a safety pin for blisters. Did you see the latest Runner's World? There is an article with a great map detailing the medical tent. What an impressive set-up!

Getting in full out planning mode for our WDW trip in June. We are staying 7 days so will need to get some training miles in a couple of times. Anyone have any good maps of running trails/sidewalks/etc. around POR and OKW?
I've seen a few online but they are all pretty short (1 to 1.5 miles). Probably looking to do a minimum of 3-4 miles. Ideas anyone?
Thanks!

Jeanne, there is a terrific path between OKW and SSR that goes past the Treehouse Villas and the canal. You can extend it through to Downtown Disney to get you mileage up to whatever you want. Here is what it says on WDWinfo: A jogging trail winds its way from the streets of Disney’s Old Key West Resort to Saratoga Springs Resort. Pick up the path along the canal to Saratoga Springs between buildings 54 & 55.
Ashleigh, I think I'm right behind you on Couch to 5K. Since I'm basically starting over again post-injury and post-half-marathon, it's been a bit of a struggle and quite humbling. I'm going to try to work on my speed during the run segments just like you're doing for your second time through each week. Sounds like a good plan to me! I just did Week 3 Day 1 last night and am happy with my speed but not with my lack of endurance. I was really huffing and puffing!

Good evening Goofs, hope everyone is having a great week. My daughter is on Spring Break this week so I feel like I am on vacation also!! In the last few months I've realized that I am a very visual person so I made a calendar that sits next to the computer to log my workouts. Its done wonders! I started logging on March 1st with a goal of more workout days than zero days and to lose atleast 10 lbs before vacation. I am happy to report only 5 zero days (one was the day before the Princess 1/2 and one was the day after) and I've lost 5 lbs!!
Happy belated birthday Ashleigh!!

Well done on the five pounds, and I love the calender idea. We're leaving for vacation on Saturday for ten days to DL with ABD. I've decided to bag my training until then, and I think a calender would really help me refocus when we get back. I thought I was going to train this week, but instead apparently I've decided to run around like a crazy person, which I don't think counts as training at all! ;)

I would not call myself hardcore at all:lmao:, however with 8 of the 12 of us on this upcoming trip being between the ages of 23 and 16, early mornings probably will not be 'their' thing. Great time to get a couple of miles in when all the young adults are still sleeping. Funny you should mention Costa Rica...we passed a billboard about timeshares in Costa Rica yesterday and my husband mentioned that it would be a nice place to visit. A guy I worked with a very long time ago and am now friends with on facebook decided he wanted to move there a few years ago. It took him about 2 years to sell everything he owned including his car and get everything in order and then just bought a one way plane ticket and moved. Yay for NYC, Joanne! (But boo for the bounced check. Sorry.)
I get to run today! I haven't felt this way about running in a long time. For the past 9 months or so, my attitude had gradually become more "Ugh. I have to run today." I'm really enjoying doing Couch to 5K all over again and pushing myself hard during the run intervals. A 5K PR might be in my future if I can just stick with the faster pace as my intervals get longer. Of course, that's easy to say at the end of Week 3. We'll see how I feel when we get to 25- and 30-minute intervals.
Another happy belated birthday to Ashleigh. I hope it was a great day!

Winter returned here yesterday, with weather in the 30's and snow. Fortunatly none of it stuck to the ground. The sun is shinning today, but it is still very cool outside. Not uncommon for the beginning of April, but very cruel after 70's just about the entire time I was off of school. I guess I will just have to bundle up a little for my run instead of wearing shorts and a t-shirt...:sad1:

Had a pretty good run today. This was my first repeat race and I got a PR for a 5K . 19:07 which was over 4 minutes better than the previous year. Pretty excited, but bummed too. I really want to break 19 minutes, and it's going to be at least 2 months before I get another chance and then I start training for the two half's and full I have for later in the year.
I forgot the best part of the race though. They were doing raffles from their sponsors and I got a free hotel night at a Hampton Inn right near the airport. It will come in handy when we leave for Vegas in a few weeks. Can't beat free stuff.

Hi guys,
Joanne Congrats on getting in to NYC. I'm sure our other WISH'ers who have done it will have some reports/advice to share. Especially Jeanne (jeanneg). Her race seemed like fun!
Kim Glad you're feeling the love for running again. It does ebb and flow with everyone, I'm sure (well, okay, there are probably some fanatics who ALWYAS love it!)
Ashleigh I still haven't taken my snow brush out of the car--and won't until May! It's just the way it is with winter.
Jason Great result! 4 minutes for a 5k is a phenomenal improvement. You should be thrilled. And nice little prize, too.
Busy weekend for me. Today I went to a service for a frien's mom who recently died. Always makes you reflect on who you still have in your life.
Yesterday I decided to substitute the local Martian 1/2 Marathon for my scheduled 10 mile LR. Here's a link to my race report.
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2439029
But long story short....I PR'ed by 11 minutes and finished in 1:50:10, and placed 3rd in my age group! Totally shocked, even though I was secretky hoping to beat 2 hours. And so I have met one of my goals for the year (sub-2:00 1/2) and can now move on to one of my others....enjoy races without always trying to PR.
Heading out to California this week for a school visit. Hope everyone has a good week.

Did my first 8 mile'r today since last year. Didn't feel too bad, we'll see how the legs feel tomorrow. Let's keep hoping the nice spring weather stays around! Easier to get out and do miles in the 60's/sunny weather.

Joanne - Congrats on making it into NYC!
Ashleigh - Happy belated birthday!
Steve - congrats on your first super sprint triathlon!
Kim - congrats on the course record at the princess. I would love to get pictures when I am at the half next January, but I will have to see where I am at that point. Right now, I just hope to not be swept!
Suzanne - Happy Anniversary. My DH and I have been together 14 years as of Jan 15th and we will have our 14th wedding anniversary on 9/10. We were married by a JP and did not tell anyone for two weeks (expect our best friends who were witnesses). I thought our mothers were going to kill us! LOL; Also, congrats on the 5 lb loss!
Jason - Congrats on the PR! That is awesome!
Maura - You substituted your long run with a half marathon event AND PR'd! Love it! You continue to inspire me :) Have a great time in Cali

Maura, it is funny that you had that substitution, because I did something similar, but with different results. LOL
I posted this in my blog too; since it is such a long-winded story, I will just copy and paste it here. :)
Well, Saturday was certainly interesting. I decided to do a 5K. A couple of days ago, while I was looking at a website for a local running store, I saw that the American Cancer Society Run/Walk was taking place this weekend. the company I work for used to sponsor this and paid the entry fee for any employee who wanted to participate. They stopped doing it last year (lack of interest I think), but I had done it all the prior years.
I thought about registering the day of the event, but wasn't really sure if I should. Well, yesterday morning, I woke up and decided I would go. I showered, put on my workout clothes, new shoes, and put some music on my new Sansa mp3 player (it is tiny and I love it). I headed out to Warner Park, registered, and waited for the event to start (about an hour since I had gotten there early).
My plan had been to follow my normal scheduled workout plan, which included 8 min of running. Well....it did not quite go as planned. See, I have never run outside before. Since I started this two months ago, I have only used the treadmill. I knew that running outside would be different, but I was not sure how different. I have heard some people say it is harder to run outside, and others say it is easier. Well, it was most definitely harder for me. It did not help that we had a strong wind (other than that the weather was perfect). I was able to run 4 one minute segments. I just was not able to do anymore than that. I tried, but it was too much.
Even though it was harder to run, I was able to really push myself on the walking. I actually beat my previous best pace. It was 17:27, but my average on Saturday was 16:46! I actually did the first 2 miles in 32 min, which is a 16:00 pace! My overall time was 52min.
Towards the end of the walk, my feet were hurting a bit, but other than that and being tired, I was feeling pretty good. When I crossed the finish line, I headed over to the food/water stand for some water. After I slowed down, my leg muscles started quivering. That has never happened after my treadmill workouts. I drank a bunch of water, stretched a little and then headed home.
Here comes the BIG MISTAKE!
I had noticed that Valvoline was having a one day special for $19.99 oil changes. I really, really needed to have mine changed and so I decided to stop on my way back home. I thought I would get a "quick" oil change and then go home to eat lunch. OMG! I waited in line for nearly an hour and a half!!!!!!!!!!!!! The whole time, sitting in my car. At least it was a really nice day out and I had the windows down and radio on.
Unfortunately, what I did not realize at the time was that as I was sitting in my car, my muscles were tightening up. When I finally got home and got out of the car, my legs HURT!! I don't mean they were just a little sore, it hurt to move! I barely got up the stairs. And, I hurt all day. I tried to do some stretches throughout the day, but the damage was already done.
Also, I was really tired the rest of the day. I think that might have been because I only ate a small amount for breakfast. I had a banana and half a bagel...and then did not get lunch until almost 2pm.
Today (Sunday), I am feeling much better, but I do have some soreness still in my legs and I have mild shin splints.
So, overall I am glad I did it, even though I learned several lessons the hard way.
Lessons Learned:
1. Eat a decent breakfast before a race and have a snack with me for after the race.
2. Bring water with me; there might not be any water stations along the route (like on Saturday).
3. It is harder to run outside (at least for me). My goals need to be more conservative than they would be on a treadmill.
4. When I am not on a treadmill, it is really hard to determine what pace I am walking/running at until I pass a mile marker. I need to learn how to pace, otherwise, I am likely to overdo it (which I think I did on Saturday).
5. Recovery after a race takes longer than after a normal workout. I need to stretch more, and take my time before leaving.
6. Do not sit for a long period of time after a race.

Oh, I should also mention that I finally went to a running store on Friday and got some new shoes. They did the foot-strike analysis and I hope I have something that will work well for me. They are the Saucony Progrid Ride 2. Doing my first 5K in brand new shoes was not the smartest way to break them in, but they seemed to be ok. :rolleyes1

Good early morning Goofs! Congrats on everyone who has been racing, great race reports!! Maura, I saw a couple of pictures on facebook, you look like you were out for a quick stroll around the park!!
I am doing a 10K for breast cancer on Saturday morning and then we have tickets for Bon Jovi on Saturday night!! I can't wait!! We bought the tickets almost 6 months ago so it seems like forever!!

Joanne - Congratulations on NYC. You must be so excited.
Jason - Great job on the 19-minute 5K. I'm not even close to being that fast.
Maura - Great PR. Wow! Have fun here in California. Which cities are you visiting?
Jeannette - Congrats on your first race! I loved reading your report. If it wasn't for the hard way, I'd never learn anything! If I could chime in on your lessons learned:
1) Eat a decent breakfast but make sure you don't have too much fiber. Dairy can also be a problem. I love a PB&J and banana about an hour and a half before race time. I also try to eat carbs and protein after a race. I usually stash another PB&J for after the race too. Don't tell my dd where all of her Uncrustables have been disappearing to! :rolleyes1
2) I always check the site for water stops ahead of time. When in doubt or if there aren't enough, I bring my own. Experiment with different types of carriers as some are annoying or awkward.
3) It is recommended to do your treadmill workouts at a slight incline to help mimic the uneven terrain and wind resistance you will have outside. There is no indoor substitute on how much harder the pavement is. Outside takes it's toll on me a lot more than treadmill, but I find I can go faster outside for some reason.
4) It's hard for me to keep pace outside, even with my Garmin. I tend to let my ego get the best of me and try to pass people, especially those young, skinny in-shape people. Of course, they end up passing me a mile or two later after my fat butt has run out of gas!
5) Always try to walk for at least five minutes after your race and then take your time doing stretches. I usually grab water and start walking and then come back for food which I eat while stretching.
6) Sitting for a long time is a big mistake I made several times. It's hard when some of the bigger races I've done are well over an hour from my house. I was more sore after sitting in my car for most of the day after a 10K than I was after the WDW Marathon because I went back to the parks after that and walked around for several hours. Stay moving and stretch a lot and you'll feel much better!
Suzanne - It sounds like you have a great weekend coming up. Have fun!
AFM, I had a busy race weekend. Yesterday was a 5K trail run on a beautiful but brutal course in one of our forests. It was a blast and the first trail race I've done since this race last year. I sure miss these. Training on trails just isn't the same as racing on them. I shaved 3:11 off of last year's time but the course was a little different.
Today was the extreme opposite experience. It was the most boring race of my life. It was a quirky race that counted in our local running club's circuit standings which was the only reason I competed. This was a timed race - one hour on the track at our local university. How ever many miles you could complete in that hour is how you placed.
I already felt fatigued after what I put myself through yesterday. I did my best but came up about 430 meters shy of 7 miles. Now I'm kicking myself for sneaking off the track to look for an unlocked restroom (couldn't find one). I probably lost three minutes which should have put me at that 7-mile finish which would have had me ahead of four other runners, three of whom I've never lost to. Grrrrrr! :headache:
Oh well, at least yesterday I finished second in my age group and had a first place finish in my AG today! Okay, there were only two of us yesterday and I was the only one today but still, my mom would be proud.

Jeanette Congrats on your firt race and I think there were many positives or you to take away from it.--you got the feel of run/walking on pavement, you discovered something about your pacing (WTG on the fast walking!), you learned a thing or two about post-race activity (don't forget to eat! Your body needs the carbs and protein to help your muscles recover). So that was a pretty productive race! And glad your shoes are working out. I also run in the Rides.
Steve Congrats on your races. Trail races are tough! And your track total was still pretty impressive. I don't think I could ever do back-to-back races (so why am I keeping an eye on the Goofy registration?) We are just going to LA. DS got into USC, and we are going to check it out. (Wish it had UCLA's location...or better yet, Pepperdine, but no such luck!)
Jeanne Congrats on your 8 miler. It is always a good feeling to build up your miles again.
I'm going to swim today. Have a good Monday, everyone.

Great job on all the races!
I had a half marathon, I had a course PR but not a PB. Tough course, lots of hills, but got it done. Sunblock worked fine on my arms and legs, but I sweat it all off my face and now look like a lobster-racoon mix! Blistered again, dont know what else to do, have tried 7 different brands of socks, 2 brands and 4 styles of sneakers, have bodyglided, vaselined, put goengo pads in my sneaks, used nothing (all at different times)...never blister in training, but always blister in races...AARRGGHH! Also, this time had severe cramping, have had minor before, but this was rough, one cramp dropped me to the ground (how embarassing!) Wow, kinda whiny huh? It wasn't THAT bad! Nice shirts (blue for the guys, pink for the girls...but I got blue so it would fit) and finisher medals, love that bling!
I joined a gym, the running coach at our local clinic suggested strengthening my core, said it would help w/speed and distance, worth a try, right? So far I've done a cardio challenge (tough) and a zumba class (tougher, but so fun!), tonight I have a training session to learn the machines. If nothing else, hopefully it will help get some pounds off...
Keep on running!

Maura - Congrats on your son getting into USC. At least he's close to the airport and Disneyland. Two big pluses for mom for future visits!
Angie - Great job with your half and course PR. I can just see you limping around, blistered, sunburned, and cramped, trying to explain to people you run because it makes you feel good. :rotfl2: Non-runners would never understand us, would they? ;)
Have fun at the gym. I'm definitely not a gym rat but I was lucky enough to find a small location I love and that offers two things I really like doing - spin classes and CrossFit. Be sure to experiment with everything there to find something you enjoy enough to make you get excited about going back. Ours just started offering Zumba and everyone here seems to love it.
AFM, I just added two more races to my calendar this year. I'll be doing my second triathlon in August. It's a 500m swim, 12-mile bike, and 5K run. I'm not worried about the biking or running but the swim is more than double the distance I've ever swam at one time. It will give me something good to train for and to get me back in the pool as I haven't been since my tri last month.
My wife and her friends have been talking about a girls-only weekend to go wine tasting and to a spa. I have been putting my foot down with a firm "NO" until I thought of something I could get in return. All is fair in love and war, right? :confused3 She can't leave me alone with our 4yo DD until she comes down off her Easter basket high!
I finally gave in last night. "All right, you can go...but you know, there's this race I would really like to do..." Being the kinder spouse and overall better person, she was happy to agree. So now I'll be running the Rock 'n' Roll San Jose Half Marathon. It will be a me-only overnight getaway in my birthplace and hometown of the greatest hockey team to rarely make it through the first round of playoffs, my beloved Sharks.
I've really wanted to run a Rock 'n' Roll race. Course-wise, this one is not very exciting but it's only a half-day drive from home and should be a lot of fun. It's a flat, fast course I should be able to PR in but it's only two weeks before I'm doing a hilly full marathon so I think it will treat it as a relaxed training run and just take in the atmosphere and experience.
Maybe next year I can bargain my way into doing the Rock 'n' Roll Seattle or San Diego. ;)

Hey Goofs!
I will post congrats and well-wishes later (for PRs, good runs, and so forth - I read, but don't always post), but I wanted to share my running geek moment - I got to run with Dick Beardsley. (Yeah, the 1982 Boston Marathon, Duel in the Sun, Dick Beardsley.) The local running store (well, semi-local - a couple towns over) had him in for a fun run and a speech, so I trekked over there and got to do the fun run with him. And not in the "yeah, I vaguely saw him in the distance" but the "I ran beside him for close to a mile or so" way.

Angie, congrats on your 1/2! Any pictures?
What a difference a good treadmill makes! A friend moved into a new apartment complex a month ago and I went to visit yesterday and to use the treadmill in their fitness center. Huge, expensive treadmill with a belt about double the size of mine. Didn't shake or creek when I walked fast. Was on for an hour and didn't think I was going to fall over when I got off. My husband said to check prices about buying one. I am pulling money off of the tree in the back yard and will get right on that!
Have a great day everyone!!!

Good Morning Goofs.
Suzanne: I hope you have a good crop on that money tree this year. Good luck with your race and enjoy the concert. My DH and I have been together 16 yrs and married for 12 ½. Did people actually tell you right from the start they didn’t think your marriage would last? Congrats on losing 5 lbs.
Rich: Very cool about running with Dick Beardsley.
Steve: I love how you and your wife negotiate time away. My DH and I are very similar. And I hear you about the Easter Basket high. We finally took the candy away because our 5 yr old twins were bouncing off the walls every night instead of going to sleep. I wish it gave me that much energy. Congrats on all your age group placings. It doesn’t matter that none of the other racers your age showed up. You still placed.
Angie: Congrats on your course record. Sorry to hear about all the blister problems. I have nothing to suggest. Do you have any ideas about what caused the cramping? Was it hotter than usual? Were you eating sports beans or Gatorade?
Jeanette: Congratulations on your great race. I’m glad you were able to learn a lot. Glad you like the new shoes.
Jeanne: It is so much easier to get out there when the weather is nice.
Maura: Super time on your half marathon. Congrats on taking 11 minutes off, that’s nearly a minute per mile. Awesome. Have a safe and fun trip to CA.
Jason: Great job on your PR. 4 minutes off a 5K is amazing. Congrats on the raffle.
Ashleigh: Belated birthday wishes. I hope the warm weather has returned to PA.
Kim: Great attitude about getting to run vs. having to run. I hope it lasts.
Joanne: Congrats on NYC. I haven’t heard of many people who did get in. You will have a busy Fall, but it will be all fun stuff.
Lauren: Have a safe and fun trip to DL.
AFM: Just 5 days away from the Boston Marathon. I think I’m ready, though I woke up this morning feeling a bit stuffy. I’m hoping it’s just allergies and not a cold. This would be a really bad time to be coming down with a cold. I plan on going to the Expo on Friday. The weather forecast is good: mid 50’s and partly cloudy. Sounds like good running weather to me.
Have a great day everyone.

Cindy Good luck at Boston! I see that Universal Sports will be broadcasting live, so I am planning to watch. Not quite the (very) old days of "Chet and Natalie" on Channel 5, or whoever is doing the local broadcast these days, but I am looking forward to it. DD is working the early shift at the merchandise area--not sure which day, but she is happy because now she may get a volunteer jacket that actually fits!
Suzanne Will you send us all seeds from your money tree? ;) Hope you can find a treadmill at a great price.
Rich That's neat about running with Dick Beardsley. I don't think I have ever been near "running royalty" before.
Angie Congrats on toughing it through another race and improving your time. I hope you find something to help with the blisters. I am also looking for something to help fix my foot problems--not blisters, exactly. Guess it's just a lot of trial and error.
AFM....heading off to LA today (Temp in MI is supposed to be warmer than LA!). The may need to plan a qucik trip to Texas, since DS got a (late) admit to U of T (Another horror story as to why it's late that I will spare you!) Time to go to the gym first and pedal.

Rich - Running and chatting with Dick Beardsley must have been a great experience. Good for you. That is one of the things I love about running. I can't think of another sport where normal folk like us can actually compete against the world's best and can get in to the bigger races because of field size. We can't exactly register for a PGA or pro tennis tournament on Active.com. Granted, they are probably in the hotel showering by the time I get to the first water stop but at least I can say I competed against them!
Suzanne - I don't think your Florida money tree would survive the cold, wet climate here but I'd gladly turn my backyard into a mini-orchard! I hear you about the treadmill. I couldn't figure out why, after my wife joined the gym, that she refused to get on our "death trap" as she called it. I know it needs a tuneup but come on! After I tried one at the gym too, now I won't get on ours either. Their treadmills are much larger, have TVs, and can decline as well as incline. I'm lucky enough to be able to go on my lunchbreak two days a week.
Cindy - Have a great time at Boston. Best of luck! I guess "break a leg" isn't a very good thing to tell a runner, so break a sweat!
Maura - Safe travels!
AFM, I'll be leaving later today for a business trip followed by some time to visit family. My wife and DD are coming with me so it should be a fun time. My DD really misses her cousins. I'll be going for a 10K training run with my sister who has been training for her first half marathon we will be running together in July.
Have a great week and weekend everyone!

AFM--I have a half marathon at Rutgers University in NJ this weekend. So excited, as there are quite a few WISHers running as well..can't wait to see everybody! For those of you that don't know, I also play goalie on an ice hockey team and our playoffs are starting..Sunday night to be exact! My team finished up the regular season in 1st place!! Back from spring break at WDW. Actually, got back this past weekend! I survived this week of "re-entry". Although, I've yet to look at our pics from the camera on the computer. :rotfl:
We had a great time. The weather was absolutely beautiful and our Give A Day fastpasses were like GOLD! We've been many times in April, but this was the first time spring break hit on Easter. WDW had lost of various Easter activities going on, so that was nice.
Anyone want to estimate how many miles of walking I did at WDW? We went into the parks seven days. I just have no clue, but I would like to count some of it toward our GOOFS goal, yes? ;)
This week I got in 12 miles. My knee is bothering me again and I'm having doubts about the full in January. Trying to stay positive! I do feel like I peaked back at the WDW half in 2009. My pace is so much slower. Keep telling myself this will not be about time, this will be about completing the distance.
How is everyone else doing? Did I miss anything exciting?
I see Joanne got into NYC and Suzanne had her anniversary. Very nice!
Have a great weekend GOOFS! :cheer2:

Cindy-Good luck in Boston!
Thanks for the birthday wishes, all! The warm weather returned during this week, but it is cold again this weekend...gotta love spring! The temp springs up and down and up and down...
I only got in one run during the week this week...we put our house on the market last weekend and had a bunch of showings, so we were either out of the house or cleaning up the house in all our spare moments...but it was worth it...we accepted an offer yesterday! They don't want to move in until May 26th, so we don't close until then. So, yeah about that! And now that we won't have showings every night, I don't have to worry about keeping the house looking immaculet! No excuses this week, though...gotta get the runs in! Hope everyone has a good week!

Laurie Hope your race went well and that you got to meet up with lots of other WISHers. Good luck with your hockey playoffs.
Shan I think going to any park is a minimum of 2 miles, and if you walk around World Showcase, even more! Try not to "worry ahead" about the race. There is so much time between now and then for you to get in great training. You will definitely be ready to do the full.
Ashleigh Congrats on your house sale--and to have it sell in one week! That is great. I think I will dread the time we ever sell our house--who wants to have to keep things so clean. It's like a full-time job.
Well DS and I are back from California and it would seem that we will have a USC Trojan in our family starting this fall. He seemed to like the school and the program they put on for us was good. So maybe we're coming to the end of this saga. I hope so. And a final pox on U of M for not admitting my son. I still can't fathom it, but am trying not to waste any more brain cells on them.
Did 8 miles today and grocery shopping. Now time to go watch the Wings.

Just a quick drive by for me:
Had the Rutgers/Unite half marathon today. I was so excited about this race because there were going to be quite a few WISHers there! It was an inaugural race and at my alma mater, Rutgers University, so I knew I couldn't pass it up. Overall, it was a great race, lots of course support which was fun. It was pretty well organized, my only complaint was that the t-shirts were sooooo... small. I ended up finishing in 2:46....not a PR by far, but my goal was to finish no faster than 2:45 to save my legs for my playoff hockey game tonight! I feel great right now, just hoping the legs hold up for my game!
Sorry so quick here...gotta head to my hockey game...will check back in later!

Rich...I say double your miles the whole time!
The Bon Jovi concert was amazing!!! This was the 4th time seeing them in concert and it only gets better. We took my 14 yr old to her first real rock concert and she loved it!! Only bad part, my husband lost his iphone somewhere in the dirt field where we parked after the show. $217 later, he has a new phone.
I did a 10K on Saturday morning that I saw on active.com. I will post a report and a picture or two later but I've decided that I will stick with the Disney races and/or the races from one of the bigger running stores in Orlando. Maybe I am spoiled but when things are listed as included with your race registration, you don't get an email a week later saying the info was wrong or they changed their minds. Oh well, you live and learn.
Have a great day everyone!!!

Ugh...gotta shoe question. At first, I thought these shoes were going to work great for me. They seemed to be fine during my 5K, but since then, I have had nothing but problems. Each one of my treadmill workouts has been painful...in my feet, ankles, and knees. (I have never had pain like this in my feet...it is a sharp pain on the outside edge, midway between my heel and toes.) The pain starts fairly quickly and I have to force myself to finish each running interval. I am still only on 1 min intervals, so when I start watching the clock at 20 sec, that is a problem. I was hoping that perhaps I just neeed to get used to them and that perhaps part of the pain was getting used to the increased incline that I am now using.
Well, yesterday I had the best workout I have had since starting this conservative C25K program. Guess what? Instead of wearing my new Sauconys, I wore my NB 805s that I had been using. NO PAIN! At all! I enjoyed my running intervals again. It felt absolutely amazing.
So, here is my question. Do I give up on the Sauconys and see if the store will take them back or do I give them more time? I bought them based on the saleman's recommendation after a foot strike analysis. I have worn them outside and they are a little dirty so I am not sure how likely they are to give me a refund.

If the only different between the two workouts was the shoes, get rid of them. The store may take them back, especially if you say that the Sauconys are really hurting, but the New Balance ones aren't - it certainly cannot hurt to try and return them.

If the store won't take them back, try going straight to Saucony. Write them an email or something on their website. Let them know your problems. They might give you a different pair/type to try. Worked for me with Asics before when one type really bothered my feet because of too much motion control.

When I checked the sign today, there was a new addition that said (basically), "If you want to turn around and head back to the west after finishing, you may continue to track your miles." So I am going to double them for at least that much. I'm not in the lead (about 40-50 miles behind the leader, actually ), but I should finish by Saturday. It's 272 miles, and I have 141 (non-doubled) done. Tomorow I plan on doing a very long bike ride, and maybe biking again in the evening. It will hurt, but I want to get it out of the way before the race on May 1.
Cindy - we want a race report! (No, I am not impatient or anything. It has nothing to do with the terrible covereage of the race this year. Really. Honest.)

I had so much fun yesterday. I was incredibly busy to my 4:45 AM start until I got home close to 8 PM. Lots of hypothermia and dehydration plus all the muscle cramps. I had 4 medical cots along with PT and ATC. I did not have one empty cot from 1 until about 6. The day flew by and I saw no familiar faces:yay:
I will either run the race next year or medically volunteer again.
Congrats to all who finished:worship::love::cool1::cheer2:
Training for my BQ race starts today:scared:
I am now extra motivated to be there in 2011!

Good Morning Goofs.
Sorry for the delay in reporting my race. Overall it was such a great time from the Expo to the finish line. Along the way there were some tough patches. The Expo was amazing. I bought a new jacket, a light belt for running at night and a nice Boston Marathon poster. My DH and I spent 3 hrs roaming around.
Race morning went well. I stayed at my sister’s house the night before because she lives just 3 miles from the drop off point out near Hopkinton while I’m 20 miles away. The bus ride to the Athletes’ Village took about 45 minutes (to go about 5 miles). That was a bit rough since I was on a school bus in the seat with the wheel well so my knees were up to my chin the whole time. The AV was amazing. Just so many people lying and sitting around waiting for the start. They had tents set up and had bagels, bananas and coffee available. Tons of porta potties, though it still took 30 minutes in line. People were very friendly and chatty, so the time passed quickly.
They gave the call for us to head to the starting line about 40 minutes before we were to start so I began to make my way. I had to drop my bag off in the baggage busses then walk about ¾ mile to the start. With all the crowds it actually took a lot of time to get there, so I made it to the corrals with about 5 minutes to spare. That was probably a good thing since I didn’t have a lot of time to worry. The gun went off and it took 2 minutes to get to the starting line, but once we were there we were running right on pace from the start.
The first half mile is down hill so I ended up going way too fast. I kept trying to slow down, but it was almost impossible with all the people cheering for you. I felt like such a rock star. I had put my name on my shirt so people were calling me by name. Just watching the crowds and listening to the roar of cheers just kept making me go faster. I did manage to slow down a bit, but probably not enough. By 7 miles my legs were already feeling tired. By the half way point I knew I was in trouble because I felt like I didn’t have anything left. I managed to stay near pace until 18 miles that’s thru 2 of the hills, but from that point on my pace slowed significantly and by the time I was over the other 2 hills I was shuffling to the end. I ended up finishing in 4:17:11. I’m OK with the finishing time, I’m just a little disappointed that I didn’t run a smarter race. I spent the last 6 miles looking at my feet and just trying to get thru it instead of really soaking it all in and enjoying being there. During the race I was thinking that I would never again run another step in my life, but 2 days later I’m thinking wouldn’t it be great to run it again next year with some fellow WISHers? (Maura, Joanne, any others??)
Thanks for all the encouragement leading up to the race. I greatly appreciate it.
Have a great day everyone.

Good evening Goofs!! Hope everyone is having a great week and staying healthy.
I did a 10K on Saturday and still have mixed feelings about it. I'm glad I did it but was given wrong information a couple of times from the race director. Right before the start, the race director was talking to the runners, telling us where to turn and what streets to run on because she didn't know if there would be anyone directing traffic out on the course. Of course this was in a town that I've never been to before so as she was saying, take a right on 4th, go down to Main, take a left.....I had no idea what she was talking about. I tried to stay with a group until we got to the out and back. The thing that made me the maddest though is at registration and on all the event pages, it states a shirt and medal to all finishers. I even verified this with the race director herself before registering. After registering, got an email saying the cut off date was wrong on the website and if I wanted a race shirt, I would have to pay an extra $5 at packet pickup to have one mailed to me in 4 weeks. When I got near the finish line, I could hear the awards ceremony going on for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placers in each age category, no big deal to me as I was towards the back. But, I later found out from my daughter and friend who were waiting for me that the director was getting impatient waiting for the final 17 racers and told the crowd she was not waiting for the final finishers, we were taking too long. Then, after I crossed the finish line, I was told there were only enough medals for the first 75 people to finish. What?!! As a back of the packer who will never finish 1st, the shirt and medal are very important to me. It would have been one thing if this was stated anywhere so I would not be expecting either but this was not the case. I emailed the lady on Saturday and have not heard back. I called her today but her voice mail box is full. I will be calling again. Sorry if I am whining, I just want my medal!

:wave2: Hi everyone! I'm brand spankin' new to the group and was directed to post on this thread.
Just a little intro: My name is Nicky, I'm 32, and am a fledgling runner (jogger is a much more accurate term). To be completely honest, I've read through the rest of this thread and am terribly intimidated by all of your running accomplishments. I have never run a race, but I am signed up for the Wine and Dine half marathon. I have always been active, so it's not a complete stretch. And, hey, I have to start somewhere, right? I would like to get an official 5K and/or 10K done before then.
I'm really looking forward to training for my first [and hopefully not last (I highly doubt it, as I am way too competitive...and the bling is a nice touch!)] race.
I bought a Garmin 305 last night and tried it out for the first time today...I love it already!:lovestruc: I think it is going to be the ideal tool for me!
Anyway, thanks for allowing me to join your group!

Suzanne - Ouch. That's harsh. I would have words with an RD who pulled that kind of thing, and would probably avoid any race with which they were associated in the future.
Nicky - Welcome to the Goofs!. You signed up for a race, therefore, you are a runner. The only difference between a jogger and a runner is a registration form and a bib. The Chicago area has plenty of 5k and 10k races over the summer, so you should be able to get some races in before the Wine & Dine.
Make sure you post how far you are from the Happiest Place on Earth - as a team, we are seeing if we can accumulate enough miles for all of us to have run/walked/biked/whatever to WDW.

Welcome Nicky!! I am planning on doing the Wine and Dine 1/2 also, just waiting to send my $$ in. I bought a Garmin after my first race, the Minnie 15K. I jogged most of it with one of Angie's (pungodingy) sisters and she had one. I was hooked and have not walked/jogged/ran without it even since.

Welcome Nicky! Glad your here to join this group! Please don't be intimidate by this group, there are fast runners, slow runners, walkers, cyclist's, etc and some of us who don't know what we are (like me):confused3. However we all share the love of Disney and the being fit! I just started running two years ago and completed my first half last October. I'm training to do a full this fall, but am having second thoughts on it. 26.2 miles is a LONG way.:scared:
Suzanne I'd be just as angry as you are. It's not right that they publicize one thing and then do something else. Then make it seem like the 'back of the packers' (which I am too) are not as important. I'd also make it known that it's unacceptable and stay away from those events again. That is exactly the attitude that scared me away from running events in the past. However I haven't experienced it yet so lets hope it's few and far between. Hang in there!
As for me, well working on a fitness challenge I got at work. Our company supplied pedometers for anyone wanting them, we upload our steps to VirginHealthmiles as often as we want. This weeks (5 day) challenge is to complete as many steps as it takes to run the Boston Marathon...which they calculate to be 52,800 steps. (Cindy you already win:goodvibes). Well, two days to go and I'm up to ~42,000. Hoping to complete the 52,800 after tonight's run so I can take tomorrow off. I plan doing a long run on Sat of 10 miles so would like a day of rest before. I'm glad that my company is doing these challenges, it helps keep me motivated to not take too much time off.
Have a great week everyone!

Welcome Nicky!! I'm registered for the Wine and Dine Half and Mickey's Halloween 5K that morning. Up to now, I've never done any official race. I will be doing a couple of 5Ks this spring and hopefully something longer over the summer. I feel a tad under accomplished with this group at times as well, but they are certainly friendly and supportive. And I remember that everyone started off new at some point.
Suzanne - That just doesn't seem right. They say one thing, yet do another. I'd be peeved as well. Grrr. Being a newbie, I wouldn't know whom to contact to voice my issues and displeasure.
On top of last night's jaunt, my mom requested I cut her grass. I forgot how clunky and heavy her old mower is. And how unlevel her lawn is. And how much larger her yard is than mine. But it was nice, I feel it a bit this morning, but its a good feeling.

Cindy - Congrats!!
Joanne - Sounds like an interesting day! I may have to look into volunteering at a couple of races. I am thinking it could be a good learning experience.
Suzanne - That really stinks. I would definitely write in and complain.
Nicky - Welcome! Don't worry, I am as newbie as they come. You are definitely not on the bottom of the totem pole there!
Well, I made another transition this week. I am up to 12 min running/18 min walking on my conservative C25K. For the last month or so, I have been running 1 min and walking 2, then repeating that cycle. With the increase this week, I had to change the timing a bit in order to fit everything within the 30 min. So, I am now walking then running every other minute until I complete my running segments, then walking the rest. My first C25K workout this week was on Tuesday. I got through it,though the last couple of segments were really tough. My thighs started quivering when I started my cool down walk. My second workout is this afternoon, and I am expecting it to go well :) Next week is a maintenance week, so I will repeat this week's workouts; though I may go ahead and increase the incline again. I am at 1% now, but I am considering going to 2%.
I will stay with this interval plan for a few more weeks at which point I will need to increase the length of my running segments. I am not sure if I should go with 90 sec or jump right to two minutes.

First, welcome to our newest Goof Nicky! You'll fit in great here. We have people with very different fitness levels. I'm somewhere in the middle I guess and am in awe of my teammates. There is a great wealth of knowledge and support on here. You picked a great race to choose as your first half. I would try to do a shorter race before then just to give you an idea of what to expect. You don't need any more pre-race jitters than you will already have. I also have a Garmin 305 which I LOVE. It's a little big but I love having all the screens available to me while I run. Best of luck with your training!
Laurie - Great job at the Rutgers race. How are the hockey playoffs going? We can sure use you in net in San Jose. Nabby hasn't been the same since the Olympics.
Shan - I hope you had a bast at WDW. I sure miss it and it unfortunately looks like it will be a couple of years before we can get back. I wore my GPS there and generally did anywhere from 8-12 miles per day. We usually park hop though.
Ashleigh - Congrats on selling your house!
Jeanette - Sorry to hear your shoes are giving you problems. Do you have any idea why that might be? Is there too much or not enough arch support or something? I have to wear orthotics so I can't just buy any running shoe out there as they don't fit that well. I had a pair of Sauconys. They were pretty good but I only got about 300 miles out of them and then they started falling apart. I had a pair of Nikes before that which I loved and went back to and I've been buying those ever since. I hope they do take them back and let you try something else. Running shoes aren't cheap! You are doing great with progressing in the C25K. Keep it up!
Cindy - Thanks for the report. Sorry you got tired so soon. I struggle with starting too fast almost every time. There is just something about all the cheering that prevents me from running at my normal pace. 4:17 is an awesome time!!! I'd love to get under 5:00 someday.
Suzanne - That sounds like a horribly disorganized race. That was terrible. I get really excited about shirts and medals too and would be really disappointed if I ever went through that. Stay on them!
Jeanne - Keep up the great work with your fitness challenge!
AFM, I'm stuck at home with my DD4 who has the chicken pox. Fortunately she feels great and only has minimal itching. She is just going stir crazy being stuck in the house and not getting to see her friends. She is also missing the last week of swim class when they give out report cards. The instructor already told us she can progress to the next class though.
I'm doing a half next weekend and we have a campsite booked near the race. Hopefully all the windstorms we are having are gone by then! The weather has been crazy here.
Take care everyone,
-steve

Cindy Congrats on your Boston finish, although I can understand if you are somewhat disappointed. But at least you got to run it!
Suzanne It does stink that they changed their tune on shirts and medals. And even though they started the awards before everyone finished (not at all uncommon), it is rather rude and tacky to actually make a point to mention that to the crowd!
Nicky Welcome! Don't get intimidated by anything on the WISH boards. Everyone has their own personal story and journey. You will make yours work for you!
Jeanne It's neat to have a challenge like your one at work. Helps to keep up the motivation. WTG on nearly getting there.
Todd Your mom's lawn sounds like ours--in need of some help. Fortunately for me, DH is the designated lawn cutter!
Jeannette Congrats on your C25K progress. It's great that you are pushing the limits and ready to adjust your training. Go with the interval you feel most comfortable with.
Steve Watch out for those Chicken Pox. My DS (age 45) just got over a case of them. Kid's diseases are definitely meant to stay with kids!
AFM, a fairly short tempo run for me today as I wind down my spring trainig plan. Thinking about a solo bike ride tomorrow instead of pedaling in the gym. We'll see.

Shoe drama update:
Ok, so I had posted a reply yesterday, but apparently it got lost somewhere. Steve, in response to your question, I have been wondering why the Sauconys were not working for me. They do not have as much arch support as my NBs, so I was thinking that might be part of it. Also, I was wondering if there was not enough support along the sides for me.
I did some research and saw that the New Balance 1063 was the NB counterpart to the Saucony ProGrid Ride 2. Since I have had luck with NB in the past and I found them on clearance, I decided to give them a try. I wore them for my morning walk at work yesterday and definitely noticed the difference in arch support and side support. When I got home, I compared the inserts and the arch on the NB insert was much higher. One of the features of the shoe is mid-foot support on the sole and the upper.
I decided to at least start my workout with the NB 1063s. I figured I could switch to my NB WR805s if I had problems. Well, the workout went pretty well. I had no pain in my ankles or knees, which was the problem with the Sauconys. My feet did hurt though. I thought it was just because they were new. I now think it was also because I had them laced up way too tight.
I am going to wear the NB 1063 pair as much as I can over the next few weeks to break them in. I will also start rotating them with the WR805s for my runs. The only downside is that the lining is part wool (I did not notice this when I bought them)and I am allergic to wool. I will just have to make sure to wear thick socks, and I won't be able to wear the "no show" length.
If this works for me, I will probably try an insert with the Sauconys to boost the arch support and see how much difference that makes. Hopefully I can either use them in my rotation or at the very least keep them at work for my walks. I need a new pair for that anyway. :)
Thanks for help and advice everyone! Looks like I might be nearing the end of the shoe-capade!

Nicky - Welcome to the GOOFS!!! :goodvibes
Steve - Thanks for the info about the GPS and walking at WDW. We are a fairly active bunch, so if you say 8 -12, then I'll count 10 miles per day while we were there this month. :thumbsup2
Hope your daughter's chicken pox is getting better!
Cindy - CONGRATS! You rocked! :yay:
Joanne - And you rocked for volunteering! :yay:
Ashleigh - Congrats on the house offer! That is wonderful. :cloud9:
Maura - Congrats on your son and school! :teacher:
Laurie - Congrats on Rutgers. I think you met my friend Lisa there?
Suzanne - You better get that medal! I guess we're all spoiled by the Disney races some, uh?
Jeanette - I have the Ride 2, also. I've also been having problems, enough so I ran once last week wearing an old pair of shoes. I thought it was the extra weight I'm carrying, but maybe it is the shoes?!? Anyway, I found your post very interesting...
OK, so I got 12 miles in this week. It is getting warm and I'm feeling it out there! My youngest is having her Brownies bridging ceremony tonight. She is all excited so I guess we're in for junior girl scouts next year. I was kinda hoping to let this be the end since she has to start all over with a new vest and all. Oh, well! Looks like more cookie sales in my future. :lmao: We did go ahead with the gymnastics team. I know I told you guys I was struggling with the price and hours. She loves it so much I caved in. Thanks for the warm wishes everyone! I already feel at home.
So far I have gotten 3 runs in this week, two since I bought my Garmin. I've used the HR feature both times. Both runs I did were 5K. After I uploaded the info from the first run, I was a little surprised as to how high my HR was throughout my run. The data said that I was basically sprinting throughout most of the run. Believe me, you wouldn't have mistaken me for sprinting if you had seen me!
I'm one of those people that will constantly push to be be better or go farther, so for today's run I made sure to slow it down a little at the beginning and try to keep an even pace. I felt good throughout, never felt like I was pushing too hard or anything. But again, the data showed that my HR was pretty high.
I know one of the things I need to work on is pacing. But what to do about this heart rate business? How concerned do you think I should be? It's not as if these were my first two runs ever, in fact they were a little shorter than what I have typically been doing. I have been running relatively consistently for 4-5 miles, 3-4 times weekly for a couple of years. The only difference is that I was primarily a treadmiller and now I am taking it to the streets. Could that have made such a significant difference? I did take a break earlier this year to try a different fitness routine, but even then I still did cardio 3x/week.
Maybe I'm just impatient?

If you felt like you weren't pushing yourself but your Garmin showed your HR was high, I would first confirm you entered your numbers correctly.
Also, I don't know if by high you mean compared with what a treadmill readout showed or if it was really high compared with your max heart rate.
My max is about 185. There are several calculators out there but they all seem to point to this based on my age. If you don't know your max, you can get a ballpark number by subtracting your age from 220 but there are some good calculators out there online.
For 5Ks and shorter or during the last mile of a longer race, I will push my HR to about 175 but for longer races, I try to keep it to about 155. This is the only way I can maintain enough energy to finish.
My HR is considerably higher for my leg speed when running outside versus the treadmill. To get my HR up to 150 on the treadmill, I have to practically sprint. The way I get around this is to do my treadmill runs on a slight incline like 1.5 or 2.0 which brings my HR up closer to where it should be.
It could be that your outside HR is where it should be and your treadmill HR is just too low.
I hope any of this is helpful to you. Enjoy your new Garmin!

I have decided to defer NYC until next year. We are going to Costa Rica in Feb and I would rather spend the $ then. I have registered for Baystate instead as a BQ (fingers and toes crossed!) I will be running with a friend who will also be trying for a BQ.
I have been out running every day in preparation of starting to marathon train. Rather interesting with my 7 year old who wants to come with me. I swear she has ADD when she goes with me: oh look a pretty rock- lets stop, oh look a really big stick- lets stop so I can carry it with us....you get the idea but I would not trade it for anything:love:

I have not used my HR monitor in some time, but I remember that it was always a little wonky, and that the breakdown used by the Garmin software used the "220 - age" calculation.
The "220 - age" is, really, no better than a ballpark estimate. Formulas range from "220 - 1/2 age" to "220 - (age + 10)", and there are probably a couple that include the phase of the moon or the atomic weight of mercury. Some people are "hummingbirds", who hit a pretty high heart rate without much effort, but can stay there. Some people have a lower max heart rate than would be indicated by the formulas, but can stay there for hours.
The best way to really determine your heart rate takes a treadmill, a stopwatch, a nurse or doctor, and a bucket. Basically, you run intervals, faster and faster, at an increasing incline, until you pretty much puke and/or pass out. (Hence, the nurse or doctor - they can also take your pulse during the recovery periods of the intervals.) I'm exaggerating there, but only a little, which is why I do not know exactly what my max HR is. According to my Garmie, and the treadmill, I have a max HR somewhere close to 210, but I don't trust those numbers much.
The better way to run (I think) is using the perceived effort scale.
Level 1: I'm watching TV and eating bon bons
Level 2: I'm comfortable and could maintain this pace all day long
Level 3: I'm still comfortable, but am breathing a bit harder
Level 4: I'm sweating a little, but feel good and can carry on a conversation effortlessly
Level 5: I'm just above comfortable, am sweating more and can still talk easily
Level 6: I can still talk, but am slightly breathless
Level 7: I can still talk, but I don't really want to. I'm sweating like a pig
Level 8: I can grunt in response to your questions and can only keep this pace for a short time period
Level 9: I am probably going to die
Level 10: I am dead
Keep most workouts in the 5-6 range, long slow runs in the 4-5 range, intervals at 4 for the slow, and 8 or 9 for the quick, and you probably going to do okay.
On an obligatory running note - I have been keeping my miles low, since I am supposedly in taper mode for next weekend, but earlier today, I officially finished the "Pedal Across Lower Michigan" challenge, so I will be adding 272 (doubled to 544) biking miles for the month. And yes, someeone did finish before me - she finished up on Friday. But now I can relax, and just run, instead of doing running and biking every day.

Had an interesting workout yesterday. Learned two things: 1. I can run more than one minute at a time :cool1: 2. It is not a good idea to run when I have not eaten for six hours
Yesterday was one of those dreary, lazy Saturdays. It was cool with periodic rain/drizzle and I was tired...all day. I get those days once every 3-4 months when I just feel run down and all I want to do is sleep.; which I did yesterday...a lot. I took a nap mid-morning and then pretty much laid about the rest of the afternoon. I was feeling better at about 5 and I decided I had better get my run in before the feeling went away. I got started and was still feeling good after my warm up, so I decided to test myself and see how long I could run without walking. I walked 2 min and then started running. I went slow, but I hit 7 min. I was still feeling pretty good and I could have done more, but I decided to walk a couple of minutes and then run the remaining 5 in a single set and then walk the rest at a good pace. Heh, well...my energy plummeted once I started walking again. I walked 2 min and started running again. I got 2 min in and had to walk. I was only half way through my workout and I was already beat. Those last 15 min were among the hardest I have done. I really had to force myself through it. I did cut my cool down short though. My calorie burn was a whole lot lower than normal too.
Lesson learned; guess these things really can only be learned from experience. I know that fuel is needed for exercise, but I underrated its importance since I am still only at 30 min (well, 45 with warm up and cool down) and my pace is still slow (I was at 4.5 but had to slow down to 4.0 when I increased the incline). Obviously I don't need to fuel up like I might for a race, but I cannot perform well if I am on empty. Performance is important for improvement and calorie burn.
I leave for the world on Wednesday. I am debating on whether I should try to get my runs in or not. I tend to have plantar fasciitis flare ups when I am there; I think it is all the standing. I don't want to push my luck with that, but I also am afraid of losing the progress I have made. My planned workouts would be Thursday, Saturday, and Tuesday. I will be home Tuesday afternoon and so I can workout then. It is just Thursday and Saturday I need to decide on.

Good early morning Goofs! Hope everyone had a great weekend. It was beautiful here until a few hours ago when the thunderstorms, heavy rain and winds started. Glad I got home from work just in time and didn't have to drive in it!
Update on my medal from last Saturday's 10K...I was finally able to leave a voice message on the race directors cell phone on Wednesday. I said that I was following up on the email I sent and would like a response either by email or cell phone. Didn't hear back and was tempted to leave a bad review on active.com. Finally got an email on Sunday morning asking if I needed the "ribbon" also or just the medal. I responded that I needed both and asked if she needed my mailing address. Wondering how many days until she response or if I will ever get the medal. Still hoping though!

Not sure why you think that such a funny goal. I provide primary care to the homeless- I think it would be a great wellness program for anyone including those without a permanent place to live.

Yikes,
I could have sworn I posted something this weekend, but apparently not. Maybe it's because I don't have much to report!
Shan Hope DD's bridging ceremony went well. My DD was a girl scout til she finished eight grade--even went to Mexico to a GS place in Cuernavaca. She enjoyed herself. And here'shoping your energy holds out for the summer!
Nicky Glad the others have given you something to go on re: heart rate--I run without a watch or monitor, so I am absolutely no help. I think I would be afraid to see what a monitor said!
Joanne Good luck on training for Bay State. I am still on the fence on doing a BQ race, but if I do it will be Free Press marathon in October (same day--so if I do it we could be virtual training buddies!)--need those cool temperatures if I'm ever going to have a chance! I had almost ditched this goal, but then I ran Martian half and started to think again....
Rich That exertion scale cracked me up. Level 7 is me when I'm having a hot flash! Congrats on finishing the Pedal challenge--and for contrivuting buckets of miles towards our Disney goal!
Jeannette Glad your workout taught you something--and WTG on the running piece! As for training at Disney, I must admit that I tend to let it go. I consider all of the walking I do as XT. If you do that, don't stress too much about losing progress. You'll be fine.
Joanne (again) I have actually seen something on TV about a program for homeless runners. I can't remember where, but when I Googled to try and find out, there were LOTS of results. Looks like it is not an uncommon thing.
Suzanne Hope you get the medal sooner rather than later. Sounds like it will come.
As for me....place the deposit for my DS at USC, and now am considering the logistics of getting him to Orientation, getting him moved in, etc. This will take work--and be pricy! You'd think there would be cheap tickets to LA. Did a 7 mile LR yesterday. This is a taper week for me, and then try to PR the 10k on Saturday. Some days I feel like I'll do it, but others--meh. Wish I could have a "who cares" attitude, but I guess I'm too competitive with myself!

Maura, My DS20 is 5 hrs away at college , can't imagine having him 5 or more States away!!. Good Luck, no matter what college is pricey. Hope your 10K goes well.
Jeanette Some workouts just go weird sometimes, esp if you stop to walk and think it will help, but it makes you just more tired. Had one of those days last week. It's an UGH day. Thank goodness its not always like that.
I did a 10miler on Saturday, didn't feel too bad. Then did a quick 3.5 with my hubby on Sunday in the rain. He runs faster than me so it makes me run faster. Now this morning my knees are acheing a bit, so may not run tonight, well see.

Sorry, hope I didn't offend! :) I did not realize you did that and were completely serious. I agree that running could be good for a lot of people, no matter their economic situation. I have to admit, though, I have never really thought about it in that way. I volunteer for a group that gathers donations for the local shelters and exercise apparel (running shoes, sports bras, etc) is not something I see very often.
I used to volunteer at the VA and I remember there was this homeless old veteran named Frank who used to come in. He was one of those crotchety old men who actually has a really good heart. He had some amazing stories. Anyway, when I read your statement, the first image that popped into my head was of a young, overzealous runner dressed in color-coordinated running apparel trying to drag Frank along in his long coat and fedora. That image brought back some good memories and amused me for the rest of the afternoon :)

Maura- you should totally go for it! You are way closer to getting a BQ than me- you missed it by 3 minutes!
Roselark- no problem. Most homeless don't fit the typical profile. I read an article a few months back in Runner's World where a woman managed to round up some homeless, run with them, and convince them to train and complete a half marathon. Very inspiring! The accomplishment even got a few to stay and remain sober.

Hey everybody!!! Checking in to see how everyone is doing. I haven't run since my half at Rutgers last weekend. I hope to get back into a groove this weekend. My hockey team is still alive in the playoffs. We had a bye in the first round but then lost in the 2nd round to a team that we beat 4 times this season..ugh. Luckily, the playoffs are double elimination so we still had a chance. Last night we had to play our arch rival in the league, and it was an amazing game!!! We ended up going to OT and it ended in a tie, and by the league rules, if it ends in a tie, the team with the higher seed in the tournament advances. So, we made it to the FINALS!!!! We have to win 2 games in a row to win it all. The good news is that both teams in the finals qualify for the HNA League Championships in Toronto in June...so we will be heading there!!!
Other than that, not much else going on...I have no races on the schedule as of right now, and I want to find one. While at the Rutgers race, my fellow WISHers got me thinking about going to do Cali to do the DL half!! So, tonight, I am going to check out flights and see if I can swing it. May have to be a solo trip for me, but I am hoping I can find a reasonable flight, because I REALLY want to go! Will any other Super Goofs be there?
Shan--Glad to hear you had a great time at WDW! Yes, I did get to meet Lisa at Rutgers! It was so cool to meet a new WISHer!
Ashleigh--Congrats on getting an offer on your house so quick! That is great!!!
Maura---Good Luck with all the college details.USC is a great school! I am sure it will all work out.
Suzanne-so jealous that you got to see Bon Jovi in concert..the are my favorite!! And, I would be so mad if I was you after that race on Saturday. Like you, I do the races for the t-shirts and medals, and if they are promised, then you should get them. I would keep after them and get some sort of answer. I see you got some response...let's hope you get the medal now!
Jeannette--Hope you got the shoe issue figured out, sounds like it definitely was something with the shoes. Have fun at WDW!!
groovygirls--sounds like a crazy day at the Boston Marathon, I think it is awesome that you volunteered! Good luck training for your BQ race!
Keep up the good work everyone!!!
Cindy--great job at Boston!!
Nicky--Welcome to the team! Everyone here is great!! Good luck with your training for Wine and Dine..wish I was going to be there!
Steve--Playoffs are going great....I wish our NHL playoffs were going better, we are big Devils fans, and well, you know how that went in the first round. Hope you DD is doing better with the chicken pox!

I've been enjoying the weather and getting to run 2-3 times a week outside. I'm doing all my tempo runs outside and interval training on the treadmill. Found a great race to do in a couple of weeks, which is put on my a local HS. Their kids run is on the track and my son is excited to do the 1/2 mile. It's an evening run so that will something new.

Quick fly by (since I am posting from my plane...total geek moment here).
I got a great run in yesterday. Since this may be my only "real" workout this week, I decided to really challenge myself. I increased the incline to 1.5% for the first 10 min. I was really feeling the burn in my legs, and I did not want to over do it too early, so I dropped it back to 1%. Technically this week is supposed to be a repeat of last week, but I decided to follow next week's schedule. I ran every other minute and got in 14 min of running. Also, for the last half of the workout, I increased my speed a bit. Overall, it was challenging and felt great! :cool1:

Hey Goofs!
Having a really busy week. Had to move my runs all around, so I got them in early this week. Got new brakes on my car, my oldest got braces, I helped with the end of the year Brownie party today, tomorrow I'm helping with field day at my youngest's elementary school and Saturday my oldest is having a swim meet I'm timing. Wow! And somehow I still managed all the regular stuff we do. :confused3:lmao: Anyway... I got in a little over 10 miles, doing a R10/W1. Sunday we're going to Mary Poppins. I can't wait!!!
Hope my fellow Goofs have an awesome weekend. :grouphug:

Long time, no post. But I have been running and I guess today's the day to total up my miles. I just checked in with Garmin Training Center and it looks like I'm at 28.41.
Once I'm done with Couch to 5K on May 15, I will have to bite the bullet and find a half to do. I'm actually jonesing to start doing long runs again, but I know I won't do them unless I have a race on my calendar. Is it too soon to start training for Wine & Dine?
Laurie and Maura, best of luck at DL. I loved it last year!
And best of luck with your hockey playoffs, Laurie!
Joanne, I read that article in RW about the homeless running group. I can totally imagine you doing something similar. Best of luck!
Goodness, I feel privileged (and to be honest, quite slow) to be in the company of Boston Marathoners and about-to-BQ runners. :worship: You guys rock!
My personal goal -- ever since the gosh-darn Presidential Fitness Test in high school -- has been to run a 10:00 mile. I've accomplished that only once or twice thus far, so you can imagine how thrilled I was to have done a 9:21 mile followed by a 3-minute walk and a 10:00 mile (on the nose!) during Wednesday's run. For a moment, I felt as proud as a Boston qualifier!

Hey Suzanne. I just realized I didn't post my run totals for April. It was 34.54. Course, that is not counting all the walking we did at WDW for spring break. Steve said he checked once with a GPS and they were putting in 8 to 12 miles a day! If I added 7 days X 10 miles that would be 70 miles walked at WDW?!? :confused3:lmao: That just seems kinda high, although we do stay pretty active. I dunno... I'll let you be the judge. ;) 34.54 + 70 = 104.54.

This month was just horrible for me, so only four miles. But May marks a new month, so it's time to lace up the shoes!

My April miles are 62.99, and I also had 8 hours of cardio training at the gym, but I can't remember how we're converting that....can someone tell me (yes AGAIN)
Thanks!

Hey Goofs!
I'll figure my April miles tomorrow. Got in earlier tonight from running the Illinios Marathon - warm, muggy day, and lack of training really hurt my time, but I had a lot of fun, and tried to look at the race as a 26.2 mile training run for an ultra coming up in a couple of weeks.
