Hot yes.... but worth it.. That is what pools are for.

But I'm still contemplating trying to go at the end of September :)

I would miss Disney for a baby! :rolleyes1 We'll be 'off site' at Bonnet Creek. Do you find the heat bad? What do you do to cool down? Is it hotter than Toronto hot???

We're thinking of going at the end of August. Depends what kind of deal we can get. We want to stay at a moderate or deluxe - but have had alot of expenses this year, so don't want to break the bank in going.

We're there Aug 7-14! We always go in August. We're Canadians, we're tough; if we can stand the frozen tundra of the north, we can take a bit of heat. Besides, helps melt the last bit of ice off my moustache each summer so I can get a fresh start on freezing it again when I get home.

I've never gone in Aug. I know Florida residents are back in school. How are the crowds then?

We stayed at Fort Wilderness last August. The first two weeks of August were somewhat busy as different schools headed back. Some schools went back the first week and the remainder of local schools went back the second. During the last 2 weeks of August, the place was almost empty... most of the RV loops were no more than 20% full. The cabins however were full.

Keep in mind that free dining started around August 15th, so the parks were a little busier but not as busy as the last week of July or the first week of August and definitely not as busy as what we encounted a couple of weeks ago during March Break

We have gone many times in August and the heat is a nice change from the crappy Ontario summers we have been experiencing over the last 5 or so years. Remember that air conditioning is everywhere... your room, the buses, in stores, in most attractions, in most queue lines. If you are waiting for the mid-day parades, try and find a little shade... that is probably when you will encounter your worst heat situation. Remember to drink lots and lots of water and make sure the kids are drinking it too, even though they may say they aren't thirsty.

Enjoy... you'll have a great time.

We're currently booked for August 16 - 28th with the free dining bounce back offer. We were there September 5 - 18th last year.

Has anyone booked there flights yet? Are you flying out of Buffalo/Detroit or Toronto if you're in Ontario?

Oh how tempted I am to book it again... we have done the last two summers, spent two full weeks last year at Royal Pacific Resort and then Pop. The heat is intense, BUT after day 2 you start to get used to it. Lots of water from the spray bottle, water to drink, water to get wet, air conditioning, etc. and it works out. Breaks are important too.

Trying to go in May but DH is a teacher and doesn't think he can get time off. :-( Maybe I can convince him for August...August better than March break for those who know?

OK you crazy canucks- who is going with me in August to battle the heat? We will be at Disney from 15th-22nd. Anybody else?

We will be there (me, DH, DS20, DS16, DD13) at ASMu from Aug 23 to 30 (bounceback with free dining) and then 1 splurge night at Bay Lake Tower (from a 40% off pin) with a view of MK and hopefully the fireworks!

I'm probably one of the few people who LOVE the Florida summer heat :cool1:

I love it, too! It was really nice last year to know there was going to be a week of hot days after the cool summer.

Is it hotter than Toronto hot???

Personally, I don't think so but I think it may depend on the kind of weather you hit. In 2008, we arrived right at the end of Faye and it was really muggy for the first 2 days, then the heat and humidity seemed no worse than a really hot humid SW Ontario day. I thought I was just getting used to the heat. But, then, in 2009, we didn't hit any tropical storm weather and it really wasn't any worse than here.

It's very hot and sticky but manageable if you take breaks inside attractions, stores or restaurants and drink lots of water.

I've never gone in Aug. I know Florida residents are back in school. How are the crowds then?

We've found the crowds to be great! The popular rides/attractions can be busy sometimes but overall it's a pretty good time to go (which is why we're headed back for the 3rd trip at that time).

Has anyone booked there flights yet? Are you flying out of Buffalo/Detroit or Toronto if you're in Ontario?

I booked Southwest flights out of Buffalo the day (my DH would say the minute) they were available on Mar 23. We have a direct flight down for $104 each and a one stop but no plane change coming back for $69. I could have booked a direct flight home but it would have meant a ME pick up at 5:30 a.m. We did that last year and it's brutal. This flight meant a pick up at 8:30 a.m. which seemed much more civilized (and as it turns out, takes us to Ft Lauderdale first before heading home so the rest of the family might see a bit of Florida coastline they haven't seen before!)

My son and I are headed back to AKL CL, August 21-26th and hopping over to Universal/PBH to take in the WWoHP August 26-28th for the first time (First Time at Universal!)
Regretably, I was at AKL Sept 1-12th and chose to forgo the Bounce Back flyer in my room/offer of free dining for this summer's trip. I allowed my husband to sway me into thinking I would not be going back again for a long time! Little did I realize the strength of Disney Love, and here I am waiting and praying for a FD announcement!!
Looking forward to our summer trip though...airfare is booked, so not going is not an option!

We'll be there third week in August. Always have travelled to WDW in August to beat the crowds and get the better deals. Heat not a problem - lots of air conditioning to go around. So much so I often have to throw a sweater in my bag. Personally, I think they over-air condition but that just me. My husband thinks its fine. :)

I think the crowds are definitely better than march break. When I went in 2006, it was very pleasant and it certainly was nothing like those pictures of the crowds during June and July.

In fact, some parts of the park even seemed empty!

TraceyDisney2008, you may be able to stay under $1000 with the current Westjet and/or Air Canada deal... I booked tickets for August for $257.22 each round trip YYZ to MCO with Westjet.

I checked your dates and you could fly Westjet down and Air Canada back for a total of $1,062.09. If your dates are a little flexible, you could fly Westjet from August 24 to September 1 for $771.66 for the 3 of you.

I believe both the Westjet and Air Canada sales end tonight at midnight.

We are making a pit stop outside of South Carolina- we watch the show Diners, Drive In's and Drive By's on the Food Network channel and there is this crab shack that is apparently to die for. We're detouring by 1 hour to go there! I remember one time when I was younger with my parents, we drove down we saw 16 fellow Canadians that we knew from our community. (township) It was crazy! It is about 4000 km each way, and according to Expedia maps it should be around 36 - 37 hours. We are going to try and do it in 2 days...DH and I are going to take turns driving and we will stay one night in hotel, most likely in Chicago. We are going to be leaving Saskatchewan at around midnight and driving 20 - 24 hours the first day and then the remainder of the trip the following day. We used to take a 16 hours road trip every year so we know that we could do 20 hours easily. We will take turns driving and sleeping, we just want to try and get through as much as possible the first day.

We got the Decals from Sandy Lion warehouse which is located in Markham just north of Toronto. They are the "bedroom" decals.. they were VERY hardy, and survived the whole 4200km round trip, the torrential downpours we drove through and everything..

We also did the sides of the car, and each of the kids got to decorate the area under their window.. Then we painted the windows with Crayola Window Markers (Not quite so hardy.. we hit some rain in VA and the color all disappeared..)

It's great fun (and fyi, I am a MAN .. and I loved it!!!)

Hi,
We hope to go Aug 23 to Sept 2 (or 3). We are waiting for free dining and reasonable airfare from Buffalo or Detroit. Hopefully, Carribean Beach Aug 23-27. We have Hard Rock Hotel for Aug 28. AKL concierge for Aug 29, (Waitlisted for AKLconc for Aug 30 and 31). Beach Club Aug 30-Sept 1. We will add days if needed--plus maybe cancel AKL and change it to Beach Club so we don't have to move around any more than we are it depends on the waitlist. I'm open to comments re: our plan.

Love the decorated car.
Just waiting until tomorrow to book air-sothwest from detroit.
I want to go that last week of aug/ending at Labour day
I have been having bad pain in my hip (broke it 7 years ago) and have an appointment tomorrow at the specialist- want to make sure I'm ok to go first

Then what to do??? Its just me and my 2 kids dd11 and ds7-always rents a car
I'm throwing around these
1) Bonnet creek -a 1 bedroom at 100 per night-then would have to pay parking but would save on food
2) find DVC points to rent I think at 10 the cost wold be the same-Board walk or AKL villas (the cheap ones) but it seems too expensive on weekends so i probably will have to move
3) Hope for a sale/pin for a MODERATE thinking corondo or Port of orleans?? Not sure. I want to keep my room cost at around 700 for 7 nights. If we stayed on site I think I would go for the counter plan- or just pay out of pocket-with the car we can go off site to eat too

Thoughts??

For the road trip, I don't know if you've done this yet, but you should pick up some roadtrip bingo cards from Chapters for your children!

They usually have it near the stationary. They come in a pack of of large "bingo" cards and you punch out the things you would see along the way, so no messy markers and the cards are reusable! I've always wanted to buy them, but don't really have a reason to....

There's also one for airports and flights.

We are heading down in late August....again. I am a person who has a real problem dealing with extreme heat and it is not holding me back.

I will admit that last year I was very worried about going to Florida in August but, except for one day at the Animal Kingdom (humidity like you wouldn't believe:eek:), I enjoyed the entire vacation and coped really well with the temperatures (as high as 34:scared:). Don't let it slow you down.....go and have a great time....I know I will:banana:.

Regarding the crowds....it wasn't bad at all. As each day progressed the lines got longer but if you are there for park opening, most rides are practically walk-ons........for the first few hours at least.

Thanks! I have been worried about the heat and the crowds, as I have never been in August. Lots of people seem to like this month, so I am feeling quite a bit better.

Those of you who have driven from Ontario before... Where do you usually stop? Do you stop for 1 or 2 nights? We have never driven and will be doing it with 1 driver.

I am a Road Warrior, having driven 7 times, and planning the next drive for Aug 1!

Depending on where you are departing from, what time you leave and how resilient the driver is...

I drive from Toronto, leave at 3 pm and generally drive straight through. I make stops at Erie PA for dinner, a small town in (i don't know the name but the area is familiar) Virginia for a stretch and a quick rest (30 minutes?) and then again in the morning on the Florida/Georgia Border rest stop.

This is where the family gets out to stretch their legs and run around taking in the fresh air for an hour or so while i take a power nap. Then we continue on to the World. That's a straight 21 hour drive though.

I know a lot of people break it down into 8 hour drives.. but that would take 3 days!! even doing 2 12 hour days just sucks way to much time from Vacation!! (at least for us!)

The best thing to do is to get a GPS, take it at your own pace, and if you need to, pull into a hotel on the way. Most GPS's can provide Hotel info while you drive, provide the phone number, and you can call about 20 miles in advance and have a nice room all ready for you when and if you need it.

We did the drive in in 2 1/2 days on the way down because we had the time. This put us in Orlando just after lunch on the third day and we stayed at a DTD hotel the first night in order to rest before starting our on-site stay. The drive down with the kids wasn't all that bad because they were looking forward to Disney but we intially dreaded the drive home until we found out about the autotrain. If you are looking for a great way to get back, I highly recommend the autotrain. We caught it in Sanford (near Orlando) in the afternoon and got off in Lorton (near Washington) the next morning. It was then just a one day drive back home to Ontario. It wasn't cheap but the kids really enjoyed the ride, it seemed to continue the vacation and it cut nearly 1200 km off of the drive.:thumbsup2

We will be at Pop from Aug. 10 to Aug. 20. Pin Code Free QS Dining. We are driving from Barrie for the 4th time. This will be our second time going in the summer. Very Hot and Humid, balanced by more time in the pool or at the water parks.
