View Full Version : Disney Rumor Alert!

Rumor has it that a survey is currently being conducted in Epcot. First was a multiple choice question asking which country you would most like to see added to World Showcase: Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Russia or Other. Following this, the next question asked guests which country would they be least upset to see removed from World Showcase. While I see no need for a country to be removed, I think Disney ought to check out the post I wrote to my blog on this subject a couple of weeks ago, http://disneygene.blogspot.com/2010/03/expanding-epcot.html. I created the whole thing for them, right down to the restaurant menu!;)

I love the idea of Russia!
I think it would be really distinctive, and interesting. I know how hard it is to visit there at the moment, so getting a slice would be fascinating!
Great idea!

Russia! Anytime the idea of a new country has come up that has been my answer. I would love to see it. And it is so very different than anything else that they have there already... It would be great!
Add Australia and pull the plunger on the Outpost. In my opinion that is dead space.

I too would like to see Russia added, it would be nice to see and Eastern European (well technically it's half Europe and Asia but you know what I mean)...Having said that it would be great to see an African Country (other than the Outpost) represented and if they did South Africa justice then that would be cool as well (meaning not just the colonized culture, but the original culture)....But one word sells me on the Russia idea...VODKA..Woooooo!!!!

While I'm guessing this isn't happening anytime soon, unfortunately, if they DID add a country, I would LOVE to see Egypt. They could do so much with it, IMO.

...depends on how you view the question.
Should they build a country that is least represented geographically?
Should they build a country that is better represented by park patrons?
Should they build a country that has a fast-growing US population?
Will the food be desired by Epcot patrons?
Can the actual country support the pavilion financially and with staffing?
I think the answer to all of these questions can only be one of two answers: Russia or India.

Egypt would be great. Any country that the could use to create some kind of major attraction for the World Showcase would be great. Some kind of roller coaster cruising through the pyramids? Nice. Of course, that might be a little too much like IoA's Mummy ride.

That is interesting news indeed. In fact, I too wrote a blog last year that covered some of this. I mentioned Russia as well as another one that was buzzing around at the time (Switzerland). Its interesting to see that they're doing some research into this.
It all makes sense as well, since the Magic Kingdom and Studios are both getting some new things. Epcot is now in need, and with Future World being recently refurbed, World Showcase needs a litle attention as well.

I'm not sure I understand the attraction behind Russia as a choice. Is it just due to the history?
I'd like to see them keep the current countries and just add another. They definitely have the space back there to do so. Part of me is thinking they should avoid places like India and African countries because they are already represented at Animal Kingdom Lodge. I'd like to see something completely new.

I can make cases for lots of very cool places, and I especially think Brazil would be great, but today for some reason I'm all over India. A nice dose of Bollywood, saris for sale, some great food...I'm in! It could be a totally different representation than what's at AK.

In my blog I listed why I'd love to see Russia. The great architecture and the easy tie-in for an E-Ticket attraction rank very highly for me, as does the fact that this is a very unique and distinct part of the world not currently represented. We have India, Asia, and Africa at AK, and mush of Asia, Western Europe and several representatives from the Western Hemisphere in Epcot, but I believe Russia would be very unique. But before I retype my whole blog, go check it out! :)

I think Russia would be an amazing choice. I have a degree in Russian though, so I am a little biased. I think it would be really cool to showcase the very unique arcitecture of Russia (onion domes are so cool!) Also, Russia is an incredibly diverse nation. It is so close to so many nations that there is a lot of cross-culture that happens, and it is pretty cool.
Their history is a truely tragic one, and as an American visiting I was very affected by the realities of war. We are lucky in America that there has never been a devestating war on our soil. So much of the country was destroyed during the war, it made me appreciate our good fortune. The city that I lived in was completly destroyed. Only one building remains from before the war, and it is NOT in good shape (missing a few walls) Just a facinating country to me.
We (as a whole, not pointing anyone out here) tend to sterotype Russia in the USA and link it only to Moscow and communism. The culture of Siberia, the caucaus region, and of course St Petersberg are all facinating. I would like to see it

First of all, if there is anything that needs to be replaced/removed from the WS, it's the Outpost. I can't imagine the WS losing any of the existing countries. :confused3
Now, if we are pulling the plug on the Outpost, I would love to see the addition of Peru to the WS. There is so much that could be done with the Amazon rainforest and the Andes, not to mention the fact that it was home to one of, if not the, oldest known human colonies in the Americas. There is a very rich history to this country and I think that it would be a fascinating addition.
Of course, if you ask my wife, she would say with no hesitation, Australia.

Yeah you're right my bad for some reason I always think Middle East when it comes to Morocco mainly because of Islam. I tend to forget that much of North and West Africa were converted to Islam...But still it would be nice to see a Southern African Country and showcase the Pre-Modern Religion influenced and pre-colonized African Culture (minus the female mutilation of course) ..... But I agree a South American Country such as Brazil or even Argentina would be good as well :goodvibes

I have the video from the Epcot Opening special, featuring Danny Kaye and Drew Barrymore. There was a segment where they showed the plans and talked with Alex Haley about the Africa pavilion. But alas as we know it never came to pass, like other announced expansions.
I don't get the question about removing a country though. There is room to do it without removing one.
With India we can get a walking tour of a Dell call center :goodvibes.
I'd have to resist the urge to dope slap someone though.
India I do think has a broadbase food appeal.

I agree the Outpost needs to go, it never really flowed with the rest of the WS- it feels like a filler.

Greece would be fiscally irresponsible in fronting any money for an endeavor such as this. I'm not sure that Russia would be sound in coming up with funds either. Based purely on willingness to pay, India would probably be a good choice or Jordan.

Their history is a truely tragic one, and as an American visiting I was very affected by the realities of war. We are lucky in America that there has never been a devestating war on our soil.
You must not be from the south and have evidently forgotten the little thing we like to call the War of Northern Aggression where all them Yankees burned down or otherwise devestated so much of the South. ;) Big difference being the Civil War only affected 1/4 of modern America and it was 150 years ago and we've since rebuilt most of that (though any drive through the back roads of Georgia, the Carolinas, Alabama, or Mississippi may convince you otherwise).
If they go with India they have the automatic cost saving measure that all CM name tags can say "Kevin" or "Steve" since invariably that's who I talk to when on the phone to customer service for any company I try to work with... he sounds like Ranjit, but he says his name is Kevin, so... :lmao:
I would love Russia. I love Russian architecture and history, so this would be just fantastic.
India would be cool, I'm sure, though I don't eat Indian food or care much for anything else Indian - just not my style.
Greece would be great if they had any money.
Egypt would also be very cool.
Brazil or Argentina would be nice to have some So. Am. representation. (They could recreate Buenos Aires so that you could visit Paris in the France Pavillion and the "Little Paris" in the Argentina Pavillion.) And you could have a Churrascaria for the restaurant - mmmm, roasted meat on a sword!
A dark horse country would be Turkey - tons of history and culinary variation, the intersection of Eastern and Western culture, home of Troy, the Ottoman empire, etc. and they have been much more open to the west than other "middle eastern" countries in recent years.
I remember seeing a few years back concept art from Disney Imagineers of an Australian pavillion which was considered for World Showcase. Obviously, it never made it, but the drawings and plans are out there and currently shelved in Burbank, CA.
If I remember correctly, a replica Sydney Oprah House (smaller version) was hanging out over the World Showcase lagoon. I'm going to see if I can find the concept art and post it.

A mini red-square might be kind of cool, I loved the buildings at redsquare and I think it would fit well into Epcot. Walking through red square with the sun setting can be breathtaking. The colors were beautiful. however during my visit I enjoyed our time in St Petersburg much more. Every where we went there was a lot of bueaty. It has been quite a while since we were there. And to be honest I have forgotten just where a lot of it was. But there were lots of beautiful gardens, fountains, cathedrals, etc.

I read somewhere (in one of the many many Disney guide books I've read the past month) that Epcot is actually designed to hold more pavilions than there are. I forget the exact number - I want to say 3 but I could be way off.
Someone also posted about a Roller Coaster in a pavilion - and in the same book (really wishing I could remember the title now) they said there was supposed to be a rollercoaster in either China or Japan (I know they are way different, but the details are fuzzy to me!!) but there just wasn't enough funding for it - because the pavilions are corporate sponsorships, I'm pretty sure.
Anyways - I'd add my vote to Greece. I think the colors and the architecture would make for an incredible pavilion - not to mention Athens/ruins! Greece is definitely on my bucket list, so I'd be a happy camper if I could get a taste for it in the world showcase for sure!

I know of 5 "segments" of the area around the world showcase lagoon that can accommodate a full pavilion:
- Between Mexico and Norway
- Between China and Germany (the Outpost) - bigger than all of them
- Between Germany and Italy
- Between Japan and Morocco
- Between Morocco and France
There is also the Millenium Village which could be reclaimed.
The only problem with this is it would get rid of some of the breaks between the countries. The only fully adjacent countries are Norway and China - the American Adventure pavilion has tree breaks between it and Japan and Italy. The exception is the Outpost, as the frontage is big enough to keep a break between, plus the bridge between it and China.

Whatever happened to Switzerland? Once upon a time there was talk of putting in Switzerland with a Matterhorn type ride. I'd vote for that...plus think of the swiss cheese and the chocolate!! They can chuck out Morroco or the Outpost or both...don't care for either. From the list of options on the survey I would go with Australia.

Think of the merchantainment tie in possibilities with the Philipines....A store that would rival Imelda Marcos' shoe closet.

The WS already is over-focused on Western Europe, so Switzerland -- which would be very diffcult to do justice to without creating a relatively involved and very costly "vertical" pavillion (read: mountains) -- is pretty much DOA.
And while the focus here is seemingly on growing continental variety, another potentially important other issue to take into account is the ability of a new country to offer great, well-known storylines (not just themes, stories) as the basis for what is really missing in the WS: a true "e" ticket attraction (which by the way includes approaches that go beyond just adding yet another "themed" coaster - why do so many people limit their view of "hot attraction" to that? )
So let's go through the lists of presumed favorites here, taking into account other variables that affect the likelihood of a given country "making the cut."
Egypt: great themes (pyramids and mummies) and while some interesting characters (Cleopatra, King Tut) no real "stories." Also, anything done on the "archeological ride" track (particularly adding a coaster) would just be seen as trying to copy the Mummy attraction at US.
Greece: more great themes and some engaging potential storylines based on mythology. Challenge: I'm not sure (as others have mentioned) that sponsorship would happen given the deepening economic crisis over there.
India: an interesting case; has great themes, and some wonderful stories (yes we all immediately think of the Jungle book). However, most of the most leveragable opportunities for theming and attractions relate back to the British colonial era (yes, blame Mr. Kilpling), which raises all sorts of "PC" issues.
Russia: for some reason, this one strikes me as both full of possibilities and simultaneously a big risk. I'm not convinced a pavillion focused on "current" Russia would be particularly engaging or attractive -- but a pre-revolution, "Dr. Zhivago" version of the country could be absolutely amazing. Frankly, I can see that featuring a state of the art "Peter and the Wolf" attraction using "Univeral Spiderman" technology!
Brazil: theming isn't a simple as it may seem: would this replicate Rio De Janeiro beaches, complete with skimpy swimwear? Or is the focus on the Amazon regions? This is probably the best example of a major country that most Epcot visitors would have a pretty much "blank slate" perception of - which would make it that more challenging to theme effectively. There also really aren't a lot of true story opportunities here (yep, "The Girl From Ipanema" would be a real family ride...!) ;)

Shoes! Did someone say shoes?
Come to think of it, why aren't great shoes sold in the Italy pavilion?

This was on display at a Vinylmation event over the weekend. Vinylmations usually come in sets of 12, so they needed something to fill the twelfth slot. Brazil is an interesting choice.

interesting...starting at the WS entrance from Futureworld, all those are clockwise the correct countries in order...but it would place Brazil someplace between Canada and Mexico...if it had been positioned somewhere else, I'd think a bit more about something being up...

Brazil for the tour groups.
It has a built in KLAXON which automatically detects when it's 3am in your particular time zone, and at that time BLARES for an hour unabated. If you place it outside, it will pound on your door until you let it back in.
These vinylmations are getting more and more advanced.

Australia is nothing more than Texas with too many things that can kill you. Brazil would be cool. Brazil contributes a major number of fans to Disney each year and the Amazon rain forest is one of the few areas of our planet that is for the most part completely unexplored. South America is also the only MAJOR (multi-countries) continent that’s not represented at EPCOT.

DO we really need an African COuntry... I mean, it's pretty well covered at DAK...
I'd like to see Australia, but NOT at Epcot. I think it would be better at DAK.
Countries I'd like to see. Russia would be cool, Brazil makes a lot of sense due to the large amount of visitors and ease of getting brazilians to come and work there... I think Egypt would be cool, but I doubt it would happen... Spain....

I read your blog... interesting ideas. I'm not sure that St Basil's cathedral would end up in there though... I can't think of anything overtly religious at Disney... For example, we don't see Notre Dame in France or the Vatican in Italy.. both equally well known and stunning land marks. I agree it would look awesome, I just don't think they'd do it.... which is a shame as its probably the most identifiable russian landmark... hopefully I am wrong though.

I'd love to see Israel included. There is SO much they could do with it. Maybe they could even have some good kosher restaurants so we won't have to order sealed caterer meals reheated in the microwave! They could represent ancient history or even better, Israel today. As a 2nd choice, Russia would be cool because there is so much of Russian history and culture that most Americans don't know anything about. And, its too difficult for most to visit.

I had this thought... and since it was me... and since it was obviously a Disney thought... which tend to be larger than Texas.... what if.... we lobbied.... not like K street lobby.. ok... maybe like that... to get a Kosher table service restaurant at WDW!! What would it take? Some place that actually cooks fresh food, right there. No pork anywhere in sight! :dance3: Where you don't have to ask... cause you know....popcorn:: If they had such a restaurant, it would be popular. On the disboards, I've encountered non-Jews who choose kosher for health reasons and some who choose because they know it means quality. Because they expect more of kosher food. I was surprised, but :)

The one pavilion I would eliminate (only if I had to) would be Italy. There isn't much to see there.
My Russian born daughter would love a Russian pavilion. I think a South American one would be more appropriate though. Chile, Argentina, or Brazil would get my vote.

I believe the rumored rollercoaster was for the Japan Pavilion. It was supposed to be a Mt. Fuji-themed attraction similar to the Matterhorn at Disneyland California called "Journey to Mt. Fuji". However, it was rumored to be scrapped because of Disney's relationship and sponsorship with Kodak. I found this information from numerous sources on the internet. However, remember it is only a rumor until Disney confirms. :wizard:
Also, every few years there are rumors about a new country "planned" to be added to World Showcase. They've even posted signs in the past of coming pavilions that never made it past the planning phase (Australia, Russia, Spain, Venezuela, United Arab Emirates, Israel and Equatorial Africa). Can they hurry up already and choose a new addition! They've been asking those same poll questions for year about new countries. I was polled two years ago!
Personally, I think Russia and India would be on the top of the list. They have to think from a money-making point of view (restaurants and shopping). Then, they have to think of the aesthetics of the pavilions. Both Russia and India have some amazing architectural landmarks (Taj Mahal and Saint Basil’s Cathedral). I would be very pleased with either country. I think they would make a great addition to World Showcase. :thumbsup2
For the person that said they don't think Disney would put anything religious into a pavilion, have you been to the Italy, Norway or Morocco Pavilions? Italy has St. Mark's Campanile (associated with St. Mark's Basilica), Norway has the Stave Church and Morocco has a Minaret (associated with a mosque). :wizard:

Supposedly, Fujifilm was going to foot the bill for it, but the Kodak relationship got in the way. Now that Kodak is apparently out of JII, I wonder if this can be reconsidered - but then again, what is Fujifilm doing any more? I don't think their marketshare of flash cards is sufficient potential business for the expense...

On the WWOD special on EPCOT Center's opening, they said right on the program that Equatorial Africa would be build and opened shortly, and even spoke with Alex Haley. That's about as confirmed an announcement you can get, and it didn't happen. At this point, I wouldn't believe anything until it's at least 80% built, and I can see it. And even then... :rolleyes1
I'm hoping for a place that serves a good curry. :)

Actually, I believe the planned Israel pavilion was cancelled due to mutual Disney & Israel funding issues (Disney - Eisner not wanting to put more cash into the money sinkhole Epcot; Israel's need to up their defense budget). Thus, the Israel exhibit in the Millennium Village: cheaper, and no security or political issues.
Yes, the kosher counter service places in Hershey and Dutch Wonderland are a pleasure for the Kosher family.

Whatever it takes. I wrote to Disney (when I was more naive) and suggested a Coney Island-style Kosher deli for the Boardwalk area. I thought that it would be great for Epcot and DHS visitors, and might even entice Kosher travelers to stay in the Boardwalk or Beach Club. However, the response was the typical "Thank you, but we don't accept Imagineering suggestions from civillians like yourself."
I know, I know.... I will be updating my blog now that the combined Halloween/Christmas season at Disney is here. Thanks for keeping an eye on it!

We know about the kosher restaurant at Hershey Park and Dutch Wonderland. I've only been to it once because usually we end up going up on Saturday and alas, it is closed for Shabbat. That said.... the last time we went to Hershey Park, I think it was 2 years ago. We couldn't help but compare everything to Disney and it wasn't that favorable. Probably because the bathrooms just don't measure up to Disney standards (or mine). Clean bathrooms is very important to me. The whole cleanliness of the park and upkeep just didn't compete with Disney, so we couldn't help but feel disappointed. Years ago, when we used to go all the time, we didn't have that problem because we hadn't BEEN to Disney! We hadn't been spoiled!
Whatever reason Israel is not included, I think its too bad! It would have been a great addition. They have the muslim country of Morocco. Did you know that when the Declaration of Independence was signed, Morocco was the first country to recognize us?! little historical factoid.

As you know, Israel was represented at the Millennium Village in 1999 with Israel funding more than $1.8 million dollars on the pavilion. There was a BIG debate on whether Jerusalem would be portrayed as the political capital of Israel. Disney has always stated that the Millennium Village was a non-political event. However, The United Arab Emirates, a group of leading Palestinians and The Arab League were all onboard to boycott all Walt Disney products and all its affiliates. It was estimated that this would be a $100 million dollar loss to Disney. The Disney company president Al Weiss met with Arab leaders. Shortly after that, Jerusalem was kept out of the Israel pavilion at the Millennium Village. Coincidence? I think not. Disney had a contract with Israel for the Millennium Village. So, they kept the agreement. However, after reading numerous websites on the matter, Disney really didn't want to get "political" and add Israel as a "permanent" pavilion. Look at all the trouble they had just for an exhibit! I also wanted to comment that back when all this was happening, a member of the Saudi royal family and major shareholder in the EuroDisney operation in France, Prince Al Walid bin Talal, said he had intervened personally with the Disney chairman, Michael Eisner, urging him to change the theme of the exhibition. I checked and Prince Al Walid bin Talal is still the major shareholder of Disneyland Paris. He currently holds a 10% stake in Euro Disney SCA (Disneyland Paris). So, I wouldn't place bets that Israel will be at Epcot anytime soon ... :confused3

There's no doubt about what you said, but the "Coming Soon: Israel" went up and down the same times as the "Coming Soon: Spain" signs. It is well known and documented that Eisner saw how much money Epcot lost in its first few years and wanted to stop putting money into it. So, while Morocco and Norway were allowed to be completed, new projects like Israel, Morocco, and the expansion of World Showcase behind its west side were shelved.
It's a shame that Disney caved to a threatened Arab boycott. The other big companies that were threatened by or experienced an Arab boycott tended to do just fine. (Nestle since 2006, Coca Cola 1968-1991, Mattel, Motorola, Ralph Lauren, Nabisco - even the NY Yankees! plus tons more.) I understand the desire to avoid politicization of the parks, but if it comes from a threatened boycott regarding a state that was in the middle of pushing forward with the Oslo peace accords and working towards peace, then something was seriously wrong there. Clearly, the Arab League and the Palestinians were much more interested in not allowing Israel any representation not because of politics, but rather out of a desire for delegitimization. If not, why make such a fuss about a country that you are deep in the process of making peace with?
Anyway, I have a feeling this may be delving into a political discussion. So, I'm just going to say that there could have been a wonderful pavilion made for Israel without it being politicized, but some out there would have politicized it anyway. It's a shame that Disney would cave to those people.
