I'm going, are you?
I know, it hasn't officially been announce yet. I would hope that they continue it, especially with the great turn out they had this year. It was my first half marathon and I plan on continuing it as long as Disney hosts it.
Check in below and we can use this as our training/discussion thread.
Look forward to seeing everyone again!
May 17 - UPDATE -

Whoo hoo! I will be running the Half Marathon. ;) It'll be my first time running at WDW. I'm currently training in New York City, doing Couch to 10k (first 10k is June 12th) and then Hal Higdon's Half Marathon (Novice) training.
Can't wait to get down there, though it seems so long away on my ticker. We'll be staying at Poly or Beach Club.

I will be back for #3!princess:
DD skipped this year..she said after her first year ( and her first half ever) she wouldn't do it again, but after watching me this year she is back in for 2011 and in 2012 she wants to do the WDW Full Marathon.

I plan on being there! After having such a wonderful time this year, I knew right away, that the Princess was something that I would definitely be back for!
By the way, if I remember correctly, the dates for 2011 were printed on the back of this year's Official Storybook Program as March 4-6. I can't wait to see all you Princesses again in 2011!
Thanks for starting this thread, mla1977!!!!

This will be my first ever half marathon... I am not a runner or jogger but I am trying to accomplish this... I am so torn between this half and the WDW half marathon in Jan...
I just started training again a few weeks ago and I can walk/jog 3.25 miles in 50 minutes but my pace is way off I have a pace of 16'23' a mile... I know I have some time left but my concern is not being able to maintain the 16 min a mile pace... maybe with some encouragment I can do it so thats why I would love to join this thread

I think you can definitely do it. I started out not being able to run pretty much any distance at all, and still can't for that matter. But I went with the Marathoning for Mortals guide, using the walk/run plan, and I was able to finish. I think if you find a good plan and stick to it, then you will definitely be able to do it. You already have a good foundation going with being able to run the 3.25 miles.
You'll definitely find lots of encouragement here on the boards, so anytime you have questions, or need a little push, we're just a post away! Good luck--you can do it!!!

Count me in! I am in week 9 of a C25K. I plan to run in a few 5K's in the next few months and a 10K on Labor Day. After that, I am going to prepare for the Princess Half using Marathoning for Mortals. I followed along on the 2010 thread, and I am so excited to have the 2011 race as my goal. The Disney race experience and crossing the finish line will be a great reward!

I'll hopefully be coming along, I'm up to week 7 of C25K. I was wanting to do marathon weekend, but we have a wedding on. So when i learnt about this race, I got all excited again.
Just need to convince hubby!

I will be at the Princess 2011. My daughter and I did the 1/2 marathon at Disneyland in 2009 and now we want to do the Coast to Coast next year. I can't wait. I've never been to WDW, any advice???

Hey Megan.... hahaha. Corinna and I were just talking about this very thing.
Mel got me to thinking and I just may do this again. Why not be perfectly Princess, make it number three? Put me on the "about 90% sure of doing it" list. Most likely won't sign up/register till closer in. I have more races in front of that to $$$$$ for.

Tracy's in! Yay!
I do recall you being one of those that pushed me over the edge and convinced me to do the Princess again. Let's be Perfectly Princess together!
I wonder which DVC resort I will stay at next year...

I'll never be "Perfectly Princess" in any respect, having missed the first one and having very few princessly aspirations, BUT I did have a blast at the 2010 Princess and know a lot of people (especially from the Biggest Loser thread) who are planning on 2011, soooo even though it is a rough turnaround after training in the winter for January, I am thinking that I'll do this one again in 2011 if I possibly can. It is going to depend somewhat on school issues, I'm afraid.
Thanks for starting the thread, Megan! :flower3:

Welcome Princess Elly!
Since you've already done a half I can say that you won't have to worry about first race jitters. This race is great because it is focused on women. There are some men who do the race, but they are more than likely doing the race to support their princess. There were only 200 the first year and about 400 (correct me if I'm wrong) this year.
As I said, this was my first half marathon and doing it again this year felt great! I loved being on the course knowing that it was something I could complete and trying to do my best while I was also doing the race with some new friends.
If you have any specific questions about the race just post them here. I'll do my best to answer them and you've got a bunch of Dinsey race veterans on here who know the in-and-outs of Disney races.
Welcome (or welcome back) to eveyone!

To everyone who has done the Princess before... (boy, that doesn't sound right, does it? :wizard:)
Where did you stay? (host resort or not?) We're planning on staying at the Grand Floridian for the week, but would consider a split stay with Poly or Beach Club if it's really THAT more convenient to stay at a host resort. I suppose I could walk to the Poly from the GF and get on that bus, if it's allowed.
You can easily walk to the Poly form the GF, htere's a nice path past the WP.
I would rather stay at just one hotel rather than move just for a bus one morning.

My first Princess I stayed off-site (mom paid and I wasn't complianing). This year I stayed at a host resort (SSR). I liked staying at a host resort since I didn't need a car. Transportation was much better than January too since people weren't rushing to the busses.

Count me in! 2011 will be my 2nd year participating in the Disney Princess and I plan on making this a yearly event as long as Disney will keep it going!!! It was so much fun and didn't feel like a "real" race. I keep checking for registration to open up!!! I think I will drive myself next year instead of relying on Disney transportation....at least I can sit in my car instead of standing in the cold waiting for the bus!

From what I understand the first year was just as cold as this year and this year was pretty darn cold. I purchased a cheap jacket to wear and once I got warmed up tossed on the side of the road. Disney donates all the clothing and there was a lot of it!!! Next year I will also bring some throw away pants, hat, scarf, and gloves. My hands were freezing!!!! I actually ended up putting on some gloves that had been tossed on the side of the road, ewww!
Yes, there were men running. Not a lot but they were there. Some were even dressed up like a princess, some of the "evil" characters, and I even saw a frog prince! Lot's of encouragement for everyone at this race!

I think this year was slightly colder than last year, but it could be that I was more prepared and aware of how my body would react to the weather. I'm also better educated on the gear that I need. For both race though, I wore a cheap Walmart poncho. It kept the heat near my body and I was able to throw it away after a mile or so.

ABOUT HOTELS:
First year, non host hotel and drove to race-pro-you can stay in your car until you go to the start
This year, host hotel-con-you are out in the cold once bus drops you off.
We stayed at All Stars Movies and I would NOT stay at an All Stars again-too many bus issues, but would stay at a host hotel again.
MEN:
Yes, they do run about 200 the first year and 400 this year-many "cross dressers" Both years I started next to a Snow White and this year he had on full makeup! But it is fun. You can go to the results page and see how the men did or someone in your age group.

Leleluvsdis You won't be running alone. You will be running with 11,000 other "Princesses Sisters". Closer to the race others on this board will start talking about their pace and will hook up and run/walk together. There will be a meeting time and place the night before the race to meet others also.
It was a lot colder this year than last.
Last year I did not need to go into medical because I was so cold like I did this year.

Hi! I'm super new to this. I did the 5K back in January, but thats about it. I'm currently 7 months pregnant so won't be starting to really train until summer. I'm hoping to make the Princess 2011 my first 1/2 Marathon, it times perfectly as I will be 2 years post cancer and on my list I made when I was first diagnosed I said I would run a 1/2 marathon at 2 years! :) DH is running it with me (I haven't told him its mostly women, but he won't care, haha). My whole family will be in town, we're doing the family 5K together also. We own DVC so will be staying at one of those... hoping race dates are announced soon so we can book and start planning.
Can't wait to read more. I feel kind of clueless.

Stephanie - 2 years post-cancer. What a way to celebrate!!! Congratulations on that and the new baby coing!
OK, I'm in teh 90% sure range. Provided I can fund the trip, but I think dh will do all he can to ship me off. I mean to let me go again. :rotfl: That would make me nothing like a Princess, but "Perfectly Princess" as far as th race goes.
For anyone who is decidign between January and Princess, I would say do Princess. A great race, seems liek more entertainment than January and they really make you feel like a Princess. (Even for people someone like me who ain't no stinkin' Princess. ;) )

Stephanie Congrats and congrats! I'm sure you will accomplish your goal of a half--piece of cake after cancer and birthing a baby!
Welcome to all and I agree with Carrie, if you are looking for a half I would choose the Princess as my first ( and I did). So many women with all different paces and lot of distractions with all the on course entertainment.

As far as the hotel, I work for IHG so I stayed at our newly reopened Holiday Inn across from Downtown Disney. The rate was too good for me not to! ;) It took us 15 minutes to drive to Epcot and park. The traffic wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and we actually passed a lot of the buses from the host resorts.
Yikes it was cold! I dropped the idea of wearing a running skirt the night before and wore my running capri's, my sleeveless running shirt under my Princess in Training long sleeve shirt, gloves, my Nike Sportband helped me keep pace, and a hat. It didn't keep me that warm but it was okay. I ditched my gloves at mile 9, but never took off the long sleeve shirt. It just didn't warm up and I just don't heat up very much with running so I have no idea what the plan will be next year. I guess I have plenty of time to decide. :)
I loved seeing all the guys that were running (most were running to support their significant others, moms, etc.) and the sense of humor out there was awesome. The shirts, the costumes, just the overall mood was incredible. Just like others have said, you were really never alone. There were always people around and the volunteers cheering us on were amazing! The only gripe I had was with the porta potties...granted I could have done what many others were and just gone on the side of the road. :rolleyes1
For those that did the Princess last year...what were some of the things that you saw or did yourself that you would recommend people didn't do next year? One thing I can think of is not carrying any extra water or sports drinks. I thought that Disney did a great job at spacing the water stations and it wasn't necessary to have the extra fluid. Plus, it was just one more thing to carry...

Just saw this thread was started!!
I ran my first 8K on March 20th and was hooked... so now I'm excited about actually doing this. It took me a LONG time to be able to run 5 miles without stopping, and I did a lot better than I thought I would. Goal was under an hour and I made it in 53:08!
Now I want to try a half and the Princess looks awesome!! I got my mom on board (to go with, not run!, she's 62) and we're both doing the 5K (walking) and I'll do the Princess the next day.
I actually just bought new running shoes and some other stuff at the running store tonight, and ordered a Garmin 305 yesterday! :cool1:

Disney, IMHO, had always done a great job of having plenty of water/powerade stations. So, I would have to agree. Plus you will most likey want to carry a camera in your hand, so the less stuff the better
As for a weather comparison. This year was WAY colder for the Princess. Last year I had a running skirt and my v-neck top and a light throw away jacket. We drove to the start that year, so more time in the car. I was just a little bit chilled at the start, but not too bad. This year was capris, L/S tech shirt with WISH vneck shirt on top, gloves and a throw away poncho.
Hoping to stay "Perfectly Princess" even though as Carrie and Mel have stated, I don't consider myself Princessly what so ever. The company, however, is nice. Nice to be around women who all have the same goal ahead of them.

It is a perfect race to start with! It was my first half and I would highly recommend it. The thing about this race as compared with others is that it is walker friendly so this isn't one you have to run the entire time unless you want to. I would recommend the Hal Higdon Half Marathon training plans. He has them for walkers, and for runners of all different levels. Oh, and as far as shoes, make sure you go to a running specialty store to get your running evaluated. That way, you get the best shoes that work with you. The right shoes make a big difference!

Most people around here use, Higdon, Galloway or John Bingham's MArathoning for Mortals (MfM). I swear by MfM. DOn't know much about Galloway, but Higdon's plans seem a bit much for me. I am only about gettign to the finish line, though. Probably teh laziest amrathoner you will ever meet. ;)
As for water, it all depends on how you train. I take water every half mile. (I know, extreme for most people.) Therefore, I must carry water. If you can go fo 1.5 to 2 miles w/o, you should be ok. However, while it should never happene again, there have been marathons adn half marathons that have run out of water. Never hurts to be prepared. JMO.

I have a fuel belt, but it has always been a little more than snug on me. After the race in January (my third wearing the belt, I decided to try a hand carried bottle. It is the kind from the fuel belt company with a little strap and a zippered pocket for a gel. I ran out of water with it, but that was because I like to carry a few pretzels to snack on and I need to wash them down. Not wearing the fuel belt made a big difference in how I felt. I may try it again when I lose weight, but in the mean time, it has been put away. There were enough waterstops during the race so I wasn't concerned about the water I was carrying. If it were an exceptionally hot day, I may reconsider and carry more water though.

I too, carried my own water. I actually used a Camelbak belt that was pretty handy that carried a good size water bottle. I was afraid that I would get too thirsty in between the stations, so I wanted to be safe. It worked out well for me as the one that I have has a zippered compartment which was great for carrying my camera and extra gels, and another elastic comparment to hold more gels. I think I will definitely run with it again next year as it turned out to be quite handy and was pretty comfy to run it. I had never trained with one, and waited until the week before the marathon to even buy it. So, I was a little nervous about it "weighing" me down, but it ended up working fine.

I will also be turning 40 that weekend next year! What better way to celebrate??????

That's definitely a great birthday party!
Re: water... I usually run/walk in my training for about an hour without water, or every 4-5 miles. So I'm not planning to carry water, but will rely on Disney's water stations.

OK, so my big debate for my very first half was between the one in January and the Princess but this thread just made up my mind... I'm in for the Princess!! I'm currently in week 3 of C210K and will be running my first 10K in June. I lost 100lbs after having my son in July 2007 (and my little girl is almost 6 months old) so looking back, I can't believe I WANT to run this!

My best friend and I are considering doing it. The only problem is we'd have to miss some school for it but we're working on convincing our parents. it's a good cause, it's healthy, it'll be tons of fun, we'll be perfectly safe, we'll talk to our teachers in advance, yada yada yada. I think my dad actually might end up doing it with us so we'll see!

In December, when I joined DIS, everyone was talking about marathon weekend...I decided running at WDW would be perfect motivation to start running again! I mentioned this at Christmas and my SIL, who is a big walker, would like to try running and is going to do it with me! I have always been a princess, so this race is right up my alley!
Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

I just wanted to pop in and say congrats to all of you who plan to run this next year! I really wish I could run it again (I mean, really, really, really), but I'll be getting married 2 months later so a March trip to Disney just isn't in the cards. (Although that won't stop me from scheming a way to make it happen ;))
If anyone is looking for some inspiration to get them going, check out my new running blog (in my signature) and read my loooong race report. Last year when I was training for the race, I searched high and low for race reports to get me motivated, but there weren't too many out there. I know it's still early, but I wish you all the best of luck with your training! The Princess 2010 thread - and everyone in it - was such a huge factor in keeping me motivated to run. Thanks!

I vowed to never, ever do it again after I finished this year. But, it's alot like childbirth. That first week after you swear you'll never do it again. 2 weeks out you think, that wasn't so bad. A month later you're trying to figure out when you can do it again.
So, I'm in and trying to run more than I walk this year (and being able to walk after too).

Why are iPhones discouraged? Because it's a phone? I was planning on bringing my iPod- I listen to it everytime I run and usually during races depending on who I'm running with (if anyone). If there's a lot going on though I might not bring it for the half.

Wow! Congratulations X 2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aw thanks :goodvibes Mine's from 84 too I think!! My first trip to Disney, just around 2 years old. I tried to start running years ago but added too much too fast, hurt myself and just gave up. I started again, building really slowly and it's been so much better. And yes, it's SO exciting!! To go from not being able to run a quarter mile to being able to finish 5 miles without walking once, it's amazing. I would love to be able to run the whole half but I'm sure I'll end up walking. Just to complete one for me would be amazing.
Question for those who've done the princess before... how does it work with pictures? I see a lot of pics of people with characters- are they on the course? Can you get someone to take your pic for you if you're running alone? Would getting a really small camera be worth it? I have a small P&S but could get a smaller one to make it easier to carry. I'm worried it will weigh me down too much.

About the iPhones/iPods: In the Endurance series chat last year they said that they are allowed, though they'd just suggest not wearing it. I wore my iPod (as did many others), though it wasn't on all of the time. It was necessary for miles 7-10 though! That part was long and boring and I really needed my music to help me. And for the record, I carried my iPhone in my SPI belt.
Men running: Men are absolutely allowed to run! My fiance ran and loved the race, even though it is geared towards women. The race tshirt is women's, so he's giving his to his mom. The expo is geared toward women as well, so as long as you don't mind all that, feel free to run. I liked seeing other men running!
Pictures during the race: There are photographers at several areas of the course, and you can buy those photos after the race, but they're really expensive. (I paid $79 to download my entire gallery of photos!) There are characters all along the course and you are encouraged to bring your camera with you! I brought my small camera and expected to keep it in the pocket of my running skirt, however I ended up carrying it the entire time because I took to many pictures! I didn't even realize I was still holding on to it until later in the race. I was surprised that it didn't bother me to hold it. At the areas where characters were, there were one or two cast members there. One would take your camera and get it prepared, while the other took a photo of someone with the character. When that person was done, I would run up and the person with my camera would take my picture while the other cast member was getting someone elses camera ready. It was a good system for keeping the short lines moving along very quickly. Anyway, my fiance and a friend of ours ran the race as well, but they are both fast so I hung back and went at my own pace. Whenever I would take my own picture, someone would always jump in and offer to take a picture of me, whether it be a Disney race volunteer or a fellow racer. At the mile marker signs, a lot of us solo runners became pros at the camera exchange with another runner, taking a picture for them and then them taking one of you. Basically you should have no worries about getting plenty of pictures if you bring your camera!

Race website says it's for safety so you can hear race officials. I also didn't know how people would do 13 miles without listening to something. I really depend on my iPod during training! I actually e-mailed one of my more experienced race friends to ask how she got through races without listening to music. But this race was exciting and had a good amount of entertainment - I didn't put on my iPod until mile 8. You can also just put in one earbud if you are concerned about hearing what is going on around you.
Photos - I also found it easy to carry my point-and-shoot camera in hand. I took a photo of every mile marker plus character shots.

Most of the course had some sort of entertainment, bands, characters, DJs ect. There was one very long stretch after the Magic Kingdom where I wished I had my MP3 (and I don't listen to music while running!). But other than that they did a really good job with music and entertainment.

The characters were along the side of the road and they all had a "handler" who would take pictures. The longest I waited for pictures was maybe 5 people; it was awsome, I got great pictures!

I think you're right there are always a few WISHers at POP, though this time most of us did end up at the All-Stars because of the bus situation, I'm guessing.
I usually train with music - one earbud in and one out. I feel like I can always hear my surroundings quite well. However, I had used my shuffle extensively on the treadmill this winter, since I barely ran outside at all between November and, well, Yesterday, and when I turned on the music around mile 2, I was like "ugh - this sounds like...Treadmill!" I was so pleased with how much entertainment there was on the course, though - I really barely needed it at all. I turned it on for a few miles during that slow middle part after the Magic Kingdom resorts. Mostly the race was too fun to drown out with music, though. This was NOT the case in January, incidentally!
Pictures - I ran with a small camera - they do not have official photographers with the characters on the course, so if you want a picture with characters, you MUST bring your own. The official race photographers get photos of you running on the course, in front of the castle if you're lucky and/or stop and at the finish. The only time I had a rough time with carrying a camera was at a valentine's day race here in Minnesota this winter. I should have left the camera home, as it was about 15 degrees and it made my hand too cold. This was thankfully not a problem at all at the Princess half! :) I have carried it by hand and I've had a little pocket on my belt in the past - I felt the belt pocket was too much trouble, overall.

You can bring your devices but just be sure to keep the volume down on the headphones so you can be aware of what's going on around you. I brought my phone to txt hubby/kids updates and my iPod shuffle which I didn't even use! I have never run without music and to do it on a 13.1 run shows you that Disney really knows how to keep you entertained, even on a long run! There was so much to see and take in that I didn't want to put them on and miss anything. Plus I had a wonderful running buddy that I "met" on this board.

Oh, I forgot to say for the photos - there is always a "handler" cast member there who is taking photos during the half marathon. During the 5K, there were a few lone characters with no handler, and in that case, runners who wanted photos would take them for each other or hand the camera to the person behind you in line, etc.
As far as spectators go, there are limited places in the parks where spectators can be, and outside the parks as well, it is limited more by where is accessible by car and foot, but some places are closely controlled as well. The times I have seen Mickey, it has not been in areas where there were any spectators.
Mickey and Minnie were by the castle and at the finish this year. There are often some character photo ops after the finish where you can get a shot with friends/family. A lot of folks will hit the parks in the afternoon with their medals and get photos with the characters there, as well, after the race is over.

Ooooh a T shirt is a good idea. Now it is warmer I have been wearing a t shirt over my workout tank instead of my fleece type jackets.

I carried my iPhone - it really helped to have music while we were waiting for things to start and distracted me from how cold it was! I had my earbuds in the entire time (mostly because they kept my ears warm and the volume down really low and didn't pay attention to the music) There were some runners around me that I could tell had their music on a really high volume but I don't think it was necessary. Just like others have pointed out, Disney did a great job of distracting you. The only time I think I got a bit bored was going up the bridge back down to Epcot. But, it was just about the end of the race so that could have been the reason! ;) Not one person seemed to care if someone had their iPod, or whatever. I didn't see anyone texting and the walkers were more apt to talk on their phone. I saw several people chatting on their phones which I thought was a little crazy. Everyone knew not to call me until they saw me running across the finish line. Although friends and family want to know how you are doing, I think it is really rude to answer you phone during the race. They have that automatic tracker that you can sign up for letting your friends and family know how you are doing and where you are so there is no reason you should have anyone calling you to find out where you are. Sorry - I just thought it was so rude and should be grounds for getting disqualified from the race. 3 1/2 hours is not a long time to ignore your phone.
My friends were able to get a spot at the finish line and didn't have a problem with finding space even with not getting there very early. So, I would recommend if anyone is to cheer you on, I think it would be most fun to see them at the finish line. :)

Has anyone done the Princess and stayed at SOG? I think I read somewhere that the Poly is one of the host hotels. Because it is right across the street (well, down the path, across the road and through the Poly parking lot...), I was wondering how that worked for people. I'm considering it because the room rates would probably be less than a mod for me, and a little more than a value...
Thanks!

I swear that when I first searched for the Princess Half I found the 2010 thread but now I can't find anything. In it, it had the prices for each hotel for this past year. Anyone remember what rates they gave? Were they discounted much from normal? If they were, I'd think of upgrading to the Poly if it's not too much (we normally stay at Riverside every year in September).

Resort Hotels they had some rates, but they weren't that good. I got a pin code that help a lot (I paid $95/night for value and used all Disney transportation)-hopefully I will get one for next year. The value resorts were around $125/night-I don't know about the others. Perhaps this is good if you take ME from airport and use all resort transportation.
The host hotels for the 2009 and 2010 were different-so who know what they will be for 2011.
leeshiebean
04-07-2010, 12:24 PM
I'm fairly certain the hotels for 2009 were different than 2010, so next year will probably have different resorts as well.
The prices were discounted off of regular rates, but I actually used a pin code and it ended up being cheaper than the race rate. I believe a lot of people used the buy 3/get 4 deal that came out as well. It's best to just 'shop around' and see what the best price is for you. Also, when the race discounts came out, they were whatever price, but then a few months later they went up, so book early if you plan to use the race discount.
The race discount on tickets, however, can be used whenever. In fact, friends who ran with us decided they wanted one more day in the parks, so the day after the race they ordered a park hopper ticket online via the race discount website, and picked it up at the hotel desk.
I thought it was beneficial to stay at a host hotel. There were regular coach buses that took us to the WWOS for the expo. Otherwise, you would have to catch several connecting buses to get there, and that can take awhile. Also, the transportation on race day morning was great. It was one less hassle to worry about, and free! (For the record, we had to take a cab from Epcot to Port Orleans Riverside and it cost us $13! That's only b/c we were running late for our Magical Express bus on the last day there.)
Oh, and I had said the host hotels came out last year in May but I was mistaken. I believe they were released in June.

Yeah, I read back into the thread, the host hotels were announced July 1.
I think we're going to vacation at WDW the week AFTER the race. So we'll aim to get there Friday night, late, and stay through the following weekend. That way, I can train normally at home, do a short run on Saturday in Orlando, and be prepped for Sunday without being exhausted from the parks. Then, WDW Sun-Friday, Harry Potter on Saturday and home Sunday.

That's something I was thinking about too. Is it better to vacation BEFORE or AFTER the race on Saturday? And if it's AFTER, when is it best to arrive in time to pick up packets and stuff?

I would say before - although don't overdo it the day before. You don't need tired legs before you run the race. :) The day before the race we saw Alice in Wonderland and played a bit at DisneyQuest and Downtown Disney. I went to MK after the race, but only for a few hours. The lines were long at many of the attractions and standing up that much afterwards didn't help my body recover any faster. Next year, I will go straight to the Spa after!

After is definitely the way to do it, for us. I was exhausted for about three weeks when I got home from Disney this time, and I didn't even run! There's no way that I'd be able to vacation before, have as good a time as I'd want to, and then run a half marathon. Waste of money!

Totally agree. We're always exhausted after!!
I want to do the 5K with my mom the day before, but we're walking it. She doesn't run but likes to walk so we figured it'd be fun to do. Then do an easy day at a park or relax at the pool. Then do the race Sunday (mom as a spectator of course :)) and I could go back to the resort to nap / lay in the pool and my mom could either relax or go to a park and we could go later on in the day. I'm hoping I'll have trained enough by then to handle going to a park that afternoon and the next day??
The more I think about it the more I want to stay at the Poly!!

This may be silly and prideful, but I want at least one or two days after so I can wear my medal at the parks! :) I'm going with a friend, so we are just doing a long weekend, but I don't want to leave until Monday evening so I can enjoy the bling!

Go to the parks - but don't go crazy in the parks - it was so much fun wearing my medal afterwards in the MK. But, there is no way if you run a half that you want to do the usual go on every ride type of visit. You get tired and your body gets tired. So, at least for that day take it easy and play it by ear. It all depends on how you explore the parks. We get the crazy itinerary going in my family and especially for those who will be running in their first half marathon next year, keep in mind that you may feel great for an hour or two, but you need to take it easy.
I would really advise anyone that is doing the Princess as their first half to do a half closer to home beforehand so that you can anticipate how much recovery time you will need. Then, take those lessons learned to the Princess and then you can go crazy in the parks. I saw plenty of Princesses in the park afterwards but most were taking it easy by watching the shows where you could sit - not standing in a myriad of lines, walking miles, etc. Plus, keep in mind the day of that you will be up since about 2 to 3 a.m. so you will get tired pretty quick after the adrenaline leaves you. But, I would relax for a few hours first - maybe take a nap after the race and then go back to the parks. Oh, and take a cold shower not a hot one before you brave the parks! You will need it! Then, the day after go back to your regular running around the parks.

Although I am usually a "cram as much as possible in while at Disney" person, I am planning for the half-marathon to be a laid back trip in general. When I said I wanted to wear the medal in the parks, I just meant I wanted to stay for a day or two to enjoy the experience. Other than doing the Keys to the Kingdom tour the morning after I arrive (before the half), I am just planning to go with the flow and enjoy being in the World!

Ooh, the KTTK tour is one of our *must do* things for the next trip :-) We don't have to go as commando next time, because we SO did that this year, but I want to fill up the week with experiences.

It is a must-do for me during the Princess trip b/c I won't have my kids with me. Since you have to be 16+, I have never done the tour during a family trip. Doing the tour and the half will be such a wonderful experience that anything else will be icing on the cake!

Then you have a good plan. :thumbsup2 I can't tell you how many people I talked to in the corrals while we were waiting that were treating the half as a three hour fun run and then go back to our regular programming of cramming the parks in right after. I saw a few at the finish line with ice taped to their legs. So, if you are taking it easy, it shouldn't be a big deal. The race was my main reason for going to Disney World at that time so I went to MK to ride the new and improved Space Mountain, eat at Liberty Tavern and see a few of the parades and do some shopping. But, then I was done. I was sore for the next few days so there was no way I was going to enjoy the parks the usual way. But, obviously it wasn't that bad since I will be back for more! ;)

Two questions for those "in the know":
1. I'm running my first 10k on June 12. If registration opens before then, should i wait to register until after i can submit an official time, or can I fix my corral later?
2. Does anyone wear glasses and have issues with them slipping as you run?

You can submit your time at any time through the expo. Chances are that registration will be open for a while so waiting shouldn't be a problem. If you were to do a race in the fall, you could submit that time too. Submitting time is only for corral placement.

Hm... We own DVC and were hoping to stay at Animal Kingdom Villas in a concierge room. :( I don't want to stay at Saratoga or Old Key West. Is it really that difficult parking on race day? We will have a car, or can even just get one of my parents to drop me and DH off.
I'm not sure if we'll be staying before or after. We'll be in the middle of a military move so will all depend on how dates work with that I'm sure. I don't want to be tired in the parks, but don't want to be tired for the race.
It's easy to park for the Princess, its hard for the jan marathon.

I have fogging issues and so I don't wear my glasses. My distance sight is okay, but my I'm very blind close up. I got a text message while waiting to race the Princess and just asked some nice girl standing near me to read it to me-very humbling "Good luck Mommy, I love you"

My DMom, DSis and I wogged (walked/jogged) the 5K this year. It was my first 5K ever and I had such a blast. My DSis is Marathon-er and Triathlon-er so she suggested the 5K last year as I was finally taking control of my health/weight!
My goal for this year is to finish losing the weight and wog, or even dare I say, run (slowly :rotfl:) the Princess 1/2 next year! :woohoo:
BTW: thanks to everyone on this thread and the 2010 official thread. it was a great help for motivation and information for my first race ever!

You won't have that issue most likely. It was so cold that I really didn't see anyone sweating until maybe the very end when it finally started to warm up. Have you ever worn a sports headband to keep the sweat under control?

I hope to be in for the Princess 2011 also- I've done the half and full in Jan but will be cruising the Pananma Canal this year so am moving to the Princess. DD#2 will probably be doing it with me (I have to check with DD#1, and DD#3) also SIL #4 may also be along- not sure if they will bring the whole family or just her DD or no one with her.
As far as the glasses issue- I run in sun glasses anytime there's sun- but wear my contact lense. Sometimes the glasses fog up- but I've never had them slip down my nose. I'd like to state though that a headband wouldn't help my slippage issue because I sweat everywhere (including my nose, cheeks, and around my eyes.)

I was not a runner but started the C25K program in January. I will now call myself a runner since I completed my first race (a 7K) in March, will be doing a 5K next weekend and actually even registered for my first 1/2 marathon for June 6th (this is going to be a bit of a stretch).

Those are the dates that were printed on the back of the Official Storybook Program that every participant received at this year's race, so I wouldn't think that Disney would publish it if those weren't the correct dates.

I know! I just booked AKV since that is one of my home resorts. It would be nice to be able to stay there and see the animals but, if not, I'll just take this as an opportunity to try a new resort and keep my fingers crossed at the 7 month mark. Is it ok come saturday and not friday or do you miss alot? I was thinking getting to disney early sat. and leaving tuesday. I need these minor details to try to convince my mom that this is a great idea. She is not a crazed disney fanatic like us so she needs a little work.

Congratulations - and good luck convincing mom!
- you don't have to stay at a host resort, but if you don't you just need transportation - at about 4am in the morning! (so rent a car, or schedule a taxi, etc...this year, we had our car, worked out fine) if you aren't at a host hotel. If you choose to stay at a "host hotel" - they offer transportation for you to the expo/and event. Keep in mind you'll be getting there super early race day (ex: 4am, race starts 2 hours later) - and they close roads, so that's your choice -- host hotel/their transportation --- other hotel/your own transportation.
- the expo this year was both on Friday and Saturday - either day is fine, and you won't miss anything

Yeehaw, have you stayed at SOG for the Princess before? We're eligible to stay there and are thining about whether it is do-able (assuming that the Poly stays as a host hotel...) LOVE the size of the rooms at SOG but can't eat there!!
Thanks!!

I have not done the Princess, or jogged more than a block, before, sorry. But the last time we were there we stayed 5 days at SOG and walked to the Poly to catch the monorail everyday. It's not a bad walk, and the price can't be beat!

Just an update to let everyone know. I am doing it! My mom has agreed that if I start training she will take me to disney! I am so excited. I am so thrilled that this can be the first 1/2 that I do what place could be any better. I have started my journal and am going to join the incredibles team.
yeah for you! you'll have a blast....this year's Princess was my first 1/2, and Disney was great inspiration for me as well....so glad you get to go with your mom :thumbsup2

wow we are almost identical!:thumbsup2 Maybe once I actually convince my mom to go I can talk her into friday night. Are you and your mom walking the 5K? I think from reading it sounds like a host hotel is the way to go. Do you know when they announce the hotels?
I saw you are def joining! Great!! Yeah my mom and I are walking the 5K. She's 62 and doesn't run but walks everyday. She is excited at the idea of doing it, and honestly I don't want to run the day before my first half!!
I thought someone said they announce the hotels around July? I know signup starts in May. I'd LOVE to stay at the poly, esp since we're doing a shorter trip than normal. We always go for 9 days in September and stay at POR but we stayed at the poly about 18 years ago and LOVED it. It would be so great to splurge or be able to get a good code or something to stay there

Thats sound like fun for you and your mom. We most likely will fly in that morning so we wont make the 5K. I would agree running the day before might be a little much. I think it will be awesome for your mom to feel a part of everything too!
I heard the same dates for the hotels and registration too. I am excited to see what hotels are the hosts. I am thinking we will go value just to save money but I would love the poly too. Maybe I will be lucky enough to get a code. that would be awesome. Are you a part of any of the wish teams?

Hi mommyof2pirates!
Welcome!
Actually to be a member of WISH, you just need to post on the boards. Many of us who have been on these boards for a while already have WISH gear (shirts and hats), but you don't even need that in order to be part of WISH.
We usually have meets on the weekends of the different races. For the Princess Half for the first two years, we met at Port Orleans Riverside. For the people who travel to the races in January, I believe that the meet is usually at Pop. There are also smaller meets for the different teams. The teams are just smaller groups that some people take part in, but are not required. (I'm a member of the Super Goofs, but I'm not very active with them.) Let me know if you have any more questions about teams!
***********
I hope everyone is doing well with their training. I just had my last TNT practice for the Broad Street Run (this Sunday!!!) here in Philly. I have been focusing more on running and will run a majority of the race. My run is still slow, but it feels good to be using muscles that I have ignored for a long time (walking certainly uses different muscles in your legs!). I hope this will help me a lot and maybe for next year's Princess I will run the whole thing!

It's been a while since I've posted and just wanted to pop in and say "Hi". I really wish they would hurry up and open registration for the Princess Half. I was ready to sign up before I even finished this years since it was so much fun!
For those that have not done it before it really is an amazing experience! There are runners, walkers, and runner/walkers! No one is left out and there is so much support from fellow racers and Disney staff. I think it's a great first 1/2 marathon experience. I would recommend doing some local 5K's just to get a feel for how a race is but if your thinking about it do it!!! You won't regret it :)

Thanks for explaining the teams. I live not too far from philly. Bethlehem which is about 45min to 1 hr. We are huge Eagles and Phillies fans. Glad to see someone else on here who is "local". I cant wait to hear about your broad street run. I was thinking of doing that next year if I didnt make it to disney for the princess but it looks like disney it is! Well actually if the broad street is in may again next year I just might do both! Nice to meet you!

I didn't know what the wish teams really were! I'm in a weight loss support group thread on the WISH board but not really a "team". Are you? Are the teams those Incredibles, etc teams?
My mom and I have been talking about the poly for years so I'd LOVE to stay there again! I can dream... but once the prices come out that's when I'll probably realize it's too much :sad2:

I am not an expert on this stuff yet but yes the incredibles are one of the teams. If you go to my journal there is a post from vernRDh telling me where to go to sign up and where to go for the incredibles board. There are many teams on here to join. There are a few women on the incredibles team that are doing the princess 1/2 too! On the first link it will explain the teams a little better.

DD and I plan on joining the group of perfect princesses. Can't wait to do it again. Right now, I am training for the Indianapolis 500 mini marathon. It's the biggest half marathon in the country. It will be my first half marathon that I will be doing without my daughter. Hope those itunes keep me moving!

Hi there I am going with my daughter also, however, I am the one pushing her to go. We ran the 1/2 marathon in Disneyland last year and I am ready to do the Coast to Coast next year. She not to sure about the whole thing, but I still have some time for her to see it my way. I am planning to stay a week after the race. Has any one been there after the race? How are the crowds?
The crowds aren't bad at all. It is a great time to go. It doesn't get crazy busy until Spring Breaks start and Easter is when it gets crazy busy! :)
As far as staying at a host hotel, I decided to stay at one of my company hotels since it was too good of a deal to turn down and drove up from Atlanta, so I had my car. The traffic wasn't bad at all and I honestly got there in less time than the buses. I was surprised. I hear that the January 1/2 is not as easy to drive to and park. Only a few days before registration starts!

ooooh! i really, really want to do this! of course, it will take some training as i am currently a couch potato. :rotfl: i have lots of time to prepare though! and what better motivation than a trip to WDW! :thumbsup2
That's exactly where I was when I started! Dh and I went from couch to full marathon in 10 months just for a trip to WDW! (Now, I don't recommend teh way we did it, but from 0 to Princess starting now is completely do-able)
We now have 5 full marathons and 11 halfs and 5 tri's under our belts. If we can do it, anyone can!

I did the 5K on Castaway Cay last year and it was a great experience. I even walked most of it but they do not care at all. The guy who was in change of it for Disney was really encouraging and supportive. I am looking forward to running it again when I cruise in 2011 - I know that I will be able to run the whole thing this time....5K ought to be a breeze after doing the Princess!

Great goal to have! The princess seems like it is going to be an awesome race for us 1st timers! That sounds like a great idea to do on the cruise. Dont worry about walking even in alot of the 5K races Ive done there are always a big group of walkers and walkers/runners! Great job on getting started....thats the first step.

This may be a silly question...
I'm running the Princess alone and I know I want to shoot for 2:30 which is a huge leap for me, since I'm running about 11 min miles in training and ran 10:40 at an 8K (I have a 10K coming up next month). This is my first half. So I do have a goal but want to take in all the sights, sounds and want to get pics with characters :wizard:
Will this totally kill my run time to stop and get pics taken? I doubt I'll be doing all that many halfs/marathons at Disney so I want to make the most of this opportunity!
I think you really want to take photos, so I would stop saying I want to do xx:xx:xx time.
Do that at a different race, beleive me most races have nothing to look at yet alone photo!!!!
You might get lucky and not have a long line for the photos you want, but any stop will affrct your time, if you think thst you will be able to pick up your pace inbetween photos than you could still make you time goal.
A lot of people run Disney for the photos, there is nothing wrong with that, I look at everyones photos and wish that I could stop and take some, but to me racing is a job so I can't.

Maybe my math is really off, but an 11 minute pace is way under a 2:30 half.
KarenAylwood

Maybe my math is really off, but an 11 minute pace is way under a 2:30 half.
11 min/mile x 13.1 miles = 144.1 minutes
144.1/60 = 2.4 hours or 2 hours and 24 minutes. So yes, 6 minutes under.
I've never run further than 5 miles at a time at this point, so I'm assuming I won't be able to average 11 min miles for 13.1 miles but who knows where I'll be by March!
It is possible the stops could be like a rest period I guess- which would allow me to run more and walk less. :confused3 Anyone else have a problem making their goal with stops?
You are correct it is, but if you put the pace for the 8K in to a running calculator, then the 1/2 marahon time comes too:2:28:38.

I missed by goal by 52 seconds in January and I stopped for a picture in front of the castle. I'm not sure how much that stop really affected me when you consider the horrible weather conditions. I beat my goal by 1:20 at the princess. I didn't stop for pictures, but I did stop for Tylenol which seemed to take as long as the pictures did.
If you can maintain 11 minutes miles for 5 miles right now, you should be okay. Try to get some speed work in and I think you can easily make your goal.

Hi All! I'm new to the boards and I'm planning on doing my first 1/2 marathon at the Princess 1/2 in March. I was a cross country runner in high school (about 22 years ago!), but had to stop at the end of the season due to shin splints and knee issues. Now here I am... 36, wife, mother of 2 boys and out of shape! What am I thinking!?! I had some health issues and a sleep disorder over the past few years and have finally gotten things under control. I have lost about 22 lbs over the last 1 1/2 years, and have started running again. It is addictive, and that same runner's high from high school has returned.
I am currently doing 5k runs on my own about 4 days a week, and hope to sign up for a 5k race soon. Unfortunately, my shin splints are starting to return, but I just went yesterday and had a shoe fitting. Apparently, I have ultra-high arches. I got some supports and a great pair of shoes. I'm trying to take it easy and just do the elliptical until my shins feel better. I'm praying that I will be able to continue training, adding mileage and finally run in the Princess 1/2! :goodvibes I'm really looking forward to the info and support from this board.

:cheer2:great job on the weight loss and getting back to running. I too have 2 boys ages 5 and 3. I was not a runner in high school but played bball softball and field hockey. I am not just getting back into being active again. My goal also is the princess 1/2. I hope to see you there. These boards are very motivational so I am sure we all will help you reach your goal. shin splints are the worst. I hope your legs feel better soon. Hi Everyone!!
I am the one who called and spoke to Disney Endurance, who said that on May 1st the run was opening - however it could be that since it was a weekend they are waiting until Monday (tomorrow).
The run was larger than expected this year, so next year they are expecting it to close sooner then this year.
I was supossed to do Broad Street 10 miler this am, and when in disney last week I twisted my knee in heels on the lovely contemporty marbel floors - UGH! So rather than tempt fate and be injured and not sore I bailed out of the run this am.
Philly was 90 with 90% humidity so overall I know I made the right choice.
I will be back again for the Princess, hoping for a 2:30 finish - this year was my first 1/2 --- 7 months post op from spine surgery and got 2:45 --- just have to get on the ball and keep going one foot in front of the other.
Anyone considering doing the Food n wine?

I am signing up for the Princess 1/2 marathon. I have started a fitness plan that includes some competitive running events. October i will be doing the Army 10 miler but I really want to do the 1/2 marathon. I will be signing up as soon as it opens. My family will be making a trip with me to support.
I found a really good MP3 training program on Amazon that start with just getting people up to running a mile. It was really good.

I hope registration starts on Monday!! I am debating about doing the Food & Wine. I am debating if there is enough time for me to recover from the Disneyland Half before doing the Food & Wine. I don't want to overdo it. I don't like getting up early - especially as early as all the races usually require you to so the Food & Wine is very tempting!!

I spoke a representative just now and she said as far as the Endurance team was told, registration was supposed to open May 1st. They do not operate the website so they are not sure why it is not open and believe it might be a technical problem. She said to just randomly keep checking the main website.:confused3

I'm a member in another discussion board that talks about the disney races, and I have just read that someone else talked to an endurance team member and they had said the registration will open in "early summer". So now it went from May 1st to "early summer", which seems to make sense because disney usually tells us when registration opens! They don't just suddenly post the new registration link, they tell us when it will open just like they did for the WDW Marathon Weekend.

Technically, early summer is the end of June. That is how the Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter is opeing up in spring 2010 on June 18. June 21 is the first day of summer (I think).

I finished in 2:50:41, but I was also nursing an injured thigh and weak ankle in addition to being distracted on the Speedway, so I'm hoping to seriously cut down my time. They had Disney at the Expo, and I saw the medal for this and decided I wanted to do it. Plus it gives me close to a year to train and prepare.
I also ran Indy with my parents, and I want to try this race by myself...I've discovered I'm not a very good social runner. And my dad is just too competitive. I almost have my parents convinced we should do this (because while I'll run by myself, I still love Disney with them), so I'll just keep bugging Mom about it!

Not to mention, this is something that I do for me :lovestruc

DH and I did the 2010 Princess Half - it was our first time and we went with another couple. We had a great time! DH could have run ahead, but he stayed with me and we got lots of photos with the characters. We walked/jogged the course. The other couple caught back up with us at mile 7 - she was just trying to finish and did not stop for any photos. DH and I would jog ahead, get photos and catch back up with them and we all crossed the finish line together. :cheer2:
We were all very sore later that day, but so proud of our accomplishment! We're all 50 and this was our first.
I didn't think my girlfriend or I would even consider doing it again, but we all got together last night and she and I decided we would do it again but we'll wait until July to make the final decision. We are going to see what date it will be and how that will fit in with our families' schedules. If we do it again, our hubbies won't stay back with us - we all will just try to finish at our own pace.

Still in Magic Season for DVC points ($$$$$)
And it could mess up b-day celebrations for the ILs. :guilty: (Actually, wouldn't mess up the celebration, but my ability to go to Princess. Ugh)

I DON'T like the new date at all!!!!
My college daughters want to run (they did it the first year and want to do it again) and it has been falling during their spring break..which works out great--We get to spend time together and run the half together..this is just not a good date for us. You can see us on the top of page 20 in the Official Storybook Program.
Now that I got that off my chest...I am going to have to work on some kind of plan to make this work. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions feel free to share.....

I feel the same way. Its only a week earlier but I can see Im not the only one this is bothering. I was hoping to get to see the epcot flower and garden festival. I believe that usually started the first couple days of march. My aunt has just decided to join our trip and I was excited for her to see it as well. She has never been to disney before....never:scared1: Can you even believe that and shes 59. I told her she has no choice but to come. Hopefully the new dates work for her. Anyone have any idea what kind of weather to expect?

I still plan to run, but I was REALLY hoping to see some of the Flower and Garden Festival! I wish they would've left it in March!

I couldn't believe they changed the date - and was shocked to get the e-mail. A week later would have been better or a month! ;) I am not worried about it being close to anything else, but just hoping that this doesn't guarantee freezing weather like this year. That was the only thing I didn't like about the race.

Everyone - try and remain positive!
They did change the date, and I bet the race will still fill up - and maybe turn out larger than this past year.
On a positive side, it is very possible that Disney changed the date to make some changes like an after party - a bigger expo -- more hotels to choice from and/or more special events.
Remember this - disney spent alot of money in advertising for the 2011 MARCH race, now the date has changed and all that money is now gone.
If I had to guess they are planning something BIGGER than this year, because of the demand for the race :)
I will be there with my gf (we leave the dh's home w/the kids) and several other friends want to run too.
Sending some pixie dust your way to see this maybe a good sign of great things to come this race in 2011:wizard::wizard::wizard::wizard:

I appreciate your positive spin, Swim-Mom.
But, I hope that they don't tie it in with the ESPN weekend which I consider to be a guy weekend and I hope people don't rush to sign up in July. I think if we all wait it will send a message to those that thought it a good idea. I won't be able to sign until Nov. after my girls get their spring semester schedules. An extra party and events wound not be in our favor as we will only get a short weekend, IF we get to go at all.

Joan - I'm with you. DD had her heart set on this, and it lined up with her college spring break perfectly. We'd already tentatively planned our 2011 Disney trip around the race, and now it won't work at all. So everything goes out the window. No Princess for us!

Hi everyone, i haven't chimed in yet, b/c i was not sure if i would do 2011 due to finances..
However, getting the date change email probably sealed the deal as a "no-go" for me.
I for one - not only go for the race, but for a nice weather break from new england. Early March is shaky enough weather wise down there -- but to move it back even a week just kills me... That is one huge reason we don't do the january race -- when i spend the money to travel to FL. i want at least a good chance of some nice weather.. If i were closer and it was just a quick weekend trip, i wouldn't care so much.. but for me to spend my money for a vacation ------ i need the nice weather. ;)
Guess i will sit this one out.. mabye a race next Oct. would be better for me!

Jackie, is there any chance your daughter is still on winter break for the January races?
Amy - First, classes start just as race weekend begins. Plus, she saw the medal at the Indy expo and decided she absolutely HAD to have a Princess medal. And we've been in January for the past 3 years and just wanted something different. After freezing to death during the 2010 Goofy, I thought it would be nice to enjoy a little warmer weather and a different sort of race experience. DH and I may still go in January, and DD may end up skipping classes for a day or two so we can do the races, but we won't get the week-long family vacation that we were looking forward to with the original Princess dates. It was just too perfectly timed!
As it happens, her birthday falls over the January race weekend every year, so it looks like she may get a marathon as her 20th birthday present!

Jackie - What a bummer! To think things fell into place so nicely and plan on it and then..... :( Being college age, you won't have that chance again too often. Or, it might not be the same. I'm sure your family will make the bestt of it, but it is a bummer!
Swim-mom - I wish I had your attitude. I always see $$$ behind the changes they make. Like going from Minnie in a low DVC point/price season during F&G to Princess, a pricier race in almost teh highest point/price season bummed me out to begin with. So, I'm skeptical. I do admire your thinking, though adn need to try harder myeself. :goodvibes
To try to be more like swim-mom, I already know that the date change has opened htis up to some others that could not go before. Glad they will get the chance.
As fro weather, anything goes. We have had 85+ degree weather in January. Last year was unseasonably cold fro FL the entire winter. That should mean better luck this year adn end of Feb could be very nice. Just never know.

MouseDogMom--I vote we just go in March anyway. Remember on the run w/ you and Brenda when I said it is possible to have vacation without running.....
I don't like Donald Duck. I adore almost everything Disney, but that particular character is not included. Plus, even though I like the attention marathon weekend gets, I just never really felt the need to be a part of it. I think I'd be a bit more positive about this if I hadn't just broken up with my boyfriend of two years, but right now I'm just mad at Disney. They can't hand out postcards with the date as March 5 and then just change it. They just lost my registration:confused3

You guys keep the "GLASS HALF FULL"!!! :wizard::wizard:
This year I fly down on the late flight on Friday with a friend and then my other friend flew in on Sat and arrived to Saratoga at 10am -- went to breakfast, did the expo and eat at Cali Grill. Were back to the room and in bed by 11pm.
Sunday work up at 3am (ish) did the run/race back to room for a shower & lunch and just walked around then we flew out at 9pm.
I have four children and my friend who has two (who flew down on Sat) agreeded we had a great time without causing too much childcare issues with our hubbies.
Next year I will only fly out the day before on the 6am flight and fly home the next night on the late flight after the run.
It may not work for everyone, but I get to experience my time and a mini vac with a great friend while not killing the budget of my family :)
Just a thought for those of you who never considered a short stay:goodvibes

swim-mom, if that works for you -- that's great! However, i can't see flying down from RI to WDW for 2/3 days... financially. That will be school vacation week here - and i would assume that flights would be high.. And, personally, i can realistically only afford to pay for round trip air for me and my dd for one trip / year --- so that needs to be worthwhile.. at least a week. ;)
IF i had more financial ability, i wouldn't think twice about flying down for a weekend! :)

Well crudpuppies!
Now it's at the end of February Vacation week for New England -- it's going to be impossible to get good airfare or room rates, and the Parks will be full...I really don't get this, the goal must not be to draw people when occupancy is down -- and it's going to be very hard to convince dh and ds it's a good idea for me to go do Princess when we had planned to do family trip to Phoenix and the Grand Canyon...

I have an advantage - Spirit airlines is only 15 min from my house and with low airfare anything is possible. We are DVC members so my room is paid for, so my only expense is food and air --- and anything I get at the expo. The race I figure is paid for in advance so it does not hurt the pocketbook that hard -- which is why I want to reg asap to get it done and over with.

Hello,
As you can tell by my posts, I am new here. I hope you don't mind me jumping in here.
A couple of months ago, my sister said, "Let's run the Disney Princess Half Marathon". Ever since, I can't get it out of my head. I really want to do it now, but she has a bad knee and her orthopedic surgeon discourages it. She's working on talking to a sports medicine Dr. to see if it's feasible.
A little running history, I was overweight and decided it was time to eat right and exercise for me. I started my weight loss journey (rejoined Weight Watchers for the umteenth time) 3 years ago this month, I have lost 65 pounds and have been maintaining since. A month later, and started running the C25K program and have been running since. I have never run further then 10.5 and have only done that once. I will be 50 this year and I have a personal goal of running a half marathon. I am trying to convince myself that I.CAN.DO.IT!
I see the w/e has changed, and I know how that effects peoples plans. That's unfortunate. Having never been to Disney, I don't know what other effect changing the w/e has. Does it change it to a prime times down there. It there another big event going one then too?
Sorry for all the questions. I appreciate your insight on this.
