Covert Operation to Discovery Island. He did post in after thought that he didn't know about the gators or ameoba. But he got some cool pictures.

Wow. That is something. How people think of this stuff? I bet it was pretty eerie on that island, but the pictures were very, very cool.

& he wasn't lunch for an alligator?
He's nuts... he might have been run over by one of those mouse sprites... those are more dangerous than some unseeable ameoba... :scared1:

That is so cool. I remember always wanting to go to Discovery Island as a kid, but I never got to go. I am pretty sure I would be way too spooked by the island to go now even if I didn't have to swim through the lake to get there!

Then, without warning, we were charged by a large, rampaging polar bear !
We thought all was Lost, until a man dressed in a burial suit and top hat pointed out the way to the smoke monster, who was providing us with fish biscuits and told us to be wary of The Others.....

I have some fond memories of visiting Discovery Island, it made for a very nice day away from the hustle and bustle of the parks and I was disappointed when they closed it.

WOW! There is no way I would ever be brave enough to try something like that. Those photos were great, but they kind of reminded me of the beginning of a horror movie "we found the island abandoned and the cages empty...
 and swimming at night in ANY body of water in FL that is not of the cement pond variety filled with chlorine :scared1: Gators, snakes and relocated Bull sharks is ALL I would have been able to think about :faint: Those are 3 very brave souls.

I feel the same way.... but replace the words 'brave enough' with idiotic enough!!
Hey it's their call, but don't expect Disney to come save you if you did something stupid! If one of them got hurt, how would they get back onto the mainland?
Sure it is interesting, but Disney doesn't want you there, probably for a reason. I hope they do something with it in the future though.

What idiots! I'm guessing that is the kind of thing that could get you bounced from Disney for life. To me that's scarrier than gators.

There are also poisenious snakes. Remember when Walter & the guys went fishing from a boat. They posted a video of the guide telling them they'd move from a certain area because she saw a snake that would "rock your world".....

How exciting! I defintely wouldn't have the nerve to do that but what a cool adventure for those guys (and slightly stupid for the reasons posted above). I'm glad they had no incidents and were able to post the info!

They're totally nuts. I remember going to Discovery Island as a child and, although it was cool to see again, they risked quite a bit. The whole preserved snake in a Coke bottle was startling though.

Cool blog, and pics! Creepy too, the way the pics look....kind of reminds me of one of the Jurassic Park movies - I think 3, where they hit the old abandoned Ingen facility on the "other" island! :scared1:

Wow, I can't believe how crazy some people are. It is interesting to see what was left behind though. I can't believe they didn't at least empty the buildings. Isn't Disney always saying how proud they are to be environmentally friendly.

Whoa! I agree with Joshua_me... that is totally LOST island! Creepy, weird and erie!!!! The run down cages and snakes in the bottles topped off the creepy LOST type factor.
But yes those guys are crazy/stupid. I'll admit I didn't know about the amoebas before listening to the podcast...but I did know about alligators! Yikes! They got very lucky. Very interesting though.

That would be a Water Moccasin. And yeah you don't want to tangle with one of those.:scared1::scared1:

Wow. What a couple of idiots.
At least the fellow admits he didn't think about the alligators or know about the Amoeba. And he's telling others not to do it.
Thank goodness.

I didn't even notice that until you said so. It seems this guys M.O. is sneak into an abandoned building, train station, park, air strip, etc and take nude photos. I could just imagine if the Disney Security found them out on Discovery Island with a nude model!

A few years ago on a fireworks cruise our boat broke down and while waiting for the rescue boat to come we were drifting very close to Discovery Island. I was totally freaked out. It was very dark and there were lots of noises from the birds and you couldn't pay me to be on that island at night, nevermind swimming across in brain sucking critter infected water. This guy must be nuts! Drifting in the dark on a broken boat was close enough for me!

This reminds me of all those River Country pictures that came out.
My question is how can Disney just abandon areas like that? The River Country pictures had trash, pictures on the walls, employee of the month awards on the ground, etc.
Kinda OT, but...
This also reminds me of the Legendary Years at POP. It's such a creepy looking area at night.

So how long has Coke been using that shape of Coke bottle? I don't think it has been that long. Does that mean someone is out there recently putting snakes in bottles? Please tell me I am wrong....

I hadn't thought about that! Good eye :magnify: I am curious to, as to how and why the snakes ended up there like that. Maybe they staged it for a creepier photo op? :rotfl:

Those pictures give new meaning to, Exile Island. There is no way I would've swam there. While we are riding the boat over to MK, I'll glance about looking for gators. But they are nocturnal IIRC, and feed mostly at night. You guys were extremely lucky not to get caught or come across something hungry or ticked.
I wondered what it looked like there. The pictures are interesting. But I don't know what Disney would do if they came across those. There has been a lot of litigation after the fact with the internet these days. Something to think about.

I did a search on Google and it looks like that bottle design came out in 1994. So, most likely it was that way the day they abandoned it.

Scary that someone would do something like that.
Many moons ago, Dh and I went to Discovery Island a couple of times - and River Country, too. It is a shame that they are closed.

I was in the college program when they closed it in 1999. I don't know why it wasn't completely cleaned up but I am sure some people could find a castmember to give them a tour rather than risk their health and future Disney visits like these guys did. It was neat to see - definitely a bit like an episode of Lost, but I am sure that won't happen again. Disney can probably figure out who these guys are if they haven't already. I would never want to be blacklisted by Disney. :sad1:
