My family is so excited about our (hopefully) July trip to Disney so I'm ready to get started planning and ask you all lots of questions. Let me share our story.

My daughter, Adri, is a spunky little toe-head that is quite the princess and never stops talking. In early January she had a weird spell of staring into space... we found it strange but she did it 3 times the next day so I called the doctor. They said to bring her in and she actually did it while we were there. The doctor felt pretty sure she was having absence seizures and scheduled an EEG. I have some cousins that had childhood epilepsy so we were prepared for that diagnosis. Six days later we were keeping her up late for her scheduled EEG and the seizures got longer and progressively worse. We called 911, were rushed to the ER via ambulance, had a CT scan that revealed a lesion, had an MRI that revealed a brain tumor, were admitted to PICU and had surgery 4 days after that. Her surgery was 2 days shy of 2 weeks from the first time anything abnormal had happened at all. It was truly a whirlwind! We were in the hospital for 2 weeks then once week after we left, we closed on our old house, bought a new one, and moved all of our stuff! In the midst of that my husband was juggling his dissertation proposal and we had a then 4 month old. Our life was C-R-A-Z-Y. We're just over 2 months removed from that time and I wonder how my head is on straight.

The good news is that the tumor was grade 2, not very aggressive, and the immediate follow-up scan showed that it was all removed from the resection. There was one tiny spot that was somewhat questionable that will be watched closely. Her first follow-up MRI is in a month. If you saw her today you'd think I was telling you a lie because she looks and acts like any other 3 year old. It's really remarkable how resilient kids can be. If the tumor comes back or if any is still there she will have another surgery or chemo. Hopefully neither!

Some friends of ours had a similar story with their 14 year old a few years ago. She did Make-A-Wish and that was the first time I realized that it wasn't just for terminal patients. She referred us, they got the information to our doctor, and then we got a letter in the mail few weeks ago telling us that Adri was eligible. We were so so so excited!

I knew without a doubt that she would pick Disney. She is quite the princess and was Cinderella for Halloween. We actually took a quickly planned 4 day Disney trip last spring. I was 16 weeks pregnant and it was one of those, "well we may as well go while she's still free" trips. We had fun - but being pregnant and taking a just-turned-2-year-old was exhausting. We didn't do any character meals or anything like that. It was fun and we were so glad we did it, but we definitely didn't get to do it "all the way."

When our wish granters came out, they talked with us a little about the trip and told us that we'd be staying at GKTW. I think I may have heard of it but didn't know much about it. The more I read and find out, I am just giddy with excitement. I know that this trip is going to be an amazing opportunity for our family. And after the month from hell and having to watch your 2 year old go through brain surgery, it's nice to have something to get excited about!

My husband is a school administrator and is finishing up his PhD. Yesterday we realized that the dates we initially put down as our 1st and 2nd choice were going to be the weeks leading up to his defense of his thesis, which is bad timing. I called my wish granters and changed our preferences so that's where we stand now. I'm so anxious to find out for sure when we'll be traveling and get started with planning. I'm learning so much just by reading through all of your TRs and just this entire thread in general.

When we take the trip Adri will be about 3 1/2 and Cooper will be 9 months. We wouldn't do it without the whole family, but I hope that having a nursing baby in tow doesn't hinder Adri from doing everything she wants to do. I'd love any and all tips about traveling with a baby. Luckily, Cooper is a very very easy baby. Hopefully he'll adapt well and take naps in the stroller.

I guess I'll update this thread with our for sure dates and keep questions going. Thanks for following us on this exciting journey!

I asked our volunteer about her meeting Cinderella, since that was her wish. She called the office for me and said that they are working on something but that it will be a surprise in our itinerary. So tonight I went ahead and make reservations myself. She'll go to BBB first and then we'll go have lunch at CRT. Since I know I'll be refunded my money as long as I cancel two days out, I wanted to go ahead and get those things on the calendar since that's the main reason we're going.

I'm so excited! I can't wait to start planning.

One question: all I was told today was my dates. Should I assume that we'll have the 3 day Disney parkhopper, 2 day Universal, and 1 day SeaWorld passes? I want to start thinking about which parks to hit on which days. I booked CRT for Tuesday (day 3 of the trip).

That's just like us! Catherine wished to meet Sleeping Beauty, but I have no idea if MAW has something up their sleeve for that. We just went ahead and booked BBB and CRT just like you did. I don't want to miss out on reservations that were really important to us, so we just made all the plans we wanted. Everything can be changed. :goodvibes

Is it silly that I'm already stressed about how to fit everything in? I want to experience all that GKTW has to offer, I want to make the most of Disney, I guess I want to do SeaWorld but I'm not sure if that's the best fit for a toddler and a baby, and I don't know enough about Universal. Ahhh, help me! I KNOW that so many people say that you can't do it all and I realized from experience last year that when you try to squeeze too much in it = no fun for mommy and daddy. But, can you guys help me prioritize?

Cooper won't care about anything, he'll just be going with the flow. I have a morning appt booked at BBB with lunch following at CRT. Should we take a day to go to GKTW? Is there enough to do there to spend one day just hanging out around the village? What would you consider a "can't miss" thing at GKTW? I definitely want to be there when Santa comes. I haven't read enough of the spoilers yet (not because I want to be surprised but because there is so much to read that I'm a bit overwhelmed, LOL), so I don't know a lot of what to expect.

From all the TRs I've read, the village sounds like it has plenty to do for a full day. I'm planning to have 2 or 3 parts of days where we hang out for a few hours, but not all in one.
I've heard great things about the Cmas party, the bday or Princess/Pirate party sound pretty fun. The game night sounds great for school ages kids. Candyland game also. Most kids love the carousel. Mini golf, movie theatre, boats, train, dress up, character meets, etc, etc, etc

I think so many of us are stressed about fitting it all in, and the more I read other's trip reports here, the more I decide it's not worth stressing about! We have lots of "plans", but I think we really need to live in the magic of the moment for this trip. We can go to any of the parks again, but we will only stay at GKTW once as a wish family. :goodvibes

Well said, Laura. I was actually talking to my husband about the same thing. I want to sit down and just really weed through what the "can't miss" things are and just allow this trip to be laid back and fun for everybody. If I'm worried about cramming it all in it won't be as enjoyable.

I think I'm confused about what to post in my PTR and what to post in the Wish Trippers thread. I guess it's all part of learning the boards!

There was discussion about rental cars on the other thread, but it was all from people who have flown and then driven a rental to GKTW. Our chapter (SC) isn't flying anyone right now, so they gave us the option to drive our own car or a rental. Our van has 180K miles on it so we opted for a rental, but then I started questioning whether or not they'd give us a van. If they were going to rent a small car, then we'd much rather have a van. I called yesterday to inquire and our wish granter said they send everybody in a van. She was going to double check for sure.

Tonight I had a big "proud mommy" moment. Basically through some friends I found out that MAW is the philanthropy for Chi Omega. There is a chapter at Clemson University, where I went to college, so I contacted some of their members and asked if I could stop by and bring Adri by. They do huge fundraisers for the SC chapter and I thought some of the girls might want to meet a "wish" kid. They invited us to their end of year banquet and had a little slideshow of Adri from the hospital and gave me the chance to share her story and then presented her with a basket of goodies for her trip (a Cinderella doll, a notebook, some bubbles, a beach towel, and a bedtime book). She ate it up. I mean, a room full of about 75-100 college girls ooohing and ahhhing over her. I was so proud of her though. She just turned 3 so honestly I didn't know how she'd respond. She got up there, told her name, her story ("I was sick but Dr Troup took that ball out of my head and I'm all better now"), and what her wish was. It was great for us and them. They've asked us to take lots of pictures and come back in the fall to share about the trip.

So I've been reading some TRs and other threads and my wheels are spinning. I know I need to have a flexible plan in case weather messes things up (that happened to us last year -- we saved MK for the last day and a terrible storm came and most of the rides were shut down for a couple of hours) or MAW has a plan or whatever. But, I think I've decided that we're just going to commit to come back for naptime every day. With the button I think that's doable and I feel like our trip will be so much more enjoyable that way. Cooper is a great napper but I know a stroller nap won't be the same thing and I don't want two cranky kids. We have some very close friends that live in Tampa. Adri was the flower girl in their wedding last August. They are going to come over one day and keep Cooper for an afternoon/evening so we can have that time with Adri. Whatever day it ends up being, I know we'll be able to hit more things when it's just the three of us, so that will be fun.

Yesterday we found out that after her MRI (on Thursday), the neurologist wants to do an EEG before making any changes to her seizure meds. Adri started having seizures before her brain tumor diagnosis and an EEG had been scheduled for the following week. Kids are only allowed four hours of sleep before this procedure so we had a plan to keep her fully engaged and keep her up all night with lots of fun stuff. Well that plan didn't work because her seizures got worse and worse until we had to call 911. That was the worst night of our lives. But, last night I started thinking that by time we get the results from the MRI and get the EEG scheduled, we'll be getting close to our trip. So I'm thinking that we'll fill that evening with lots of fun Disney stuff. I'm trying to think through what some of that might be. I'm just glad we're going to get a "redo" on that nightmare experience from before!

Taking nap time at the village is a great idea. Dont forget the Wish lounges are available also. They have a couch and big pillows to get comfy on at the MK one.
Im glad you get a redo for the EEG. I hate those nights. Im sure you can come up with lots of fun Disney stuff to do. :goodvibes

I think that going back to the village for an afternoon nap is a great idea! I was trying to decide if we would be able to do the same!

There is so much information and so many things to do it can get overwhelming especially when you try to make plans that may or may not happen due to weather or kids getting tired. I bet whatever you guys decide will be perfect!

Okay, I have to share this fun news with you guys. MAW called me last week and asked me to email a picture of Adri. The lady explained the reason why, but honestly, they called in the most chaotic of moments, that I just emailed the picture without really understanding why they needed it. I then emailed later and asked her if she could tell me again why she needed it. I thought it was cool but didn't fully understand until tonight.

Basically there is a casting director out of Columbia (our capitol) who has casted for all the major reality TV shows. She is raising money for SC's MAW by setting up an online competition b/w stars & fans of the various shows to see which show can raise the most money. The event is called "Reality Wish" and it's going to be an annual event that they do. This is the first year. Well, Adri was chosen to be the child whose wish they are raising money for. So right now the competition is taking place and stars & fans from The Amazing Race, Big Brother, Survivor, The Biggest Loser, and King of the Crown are raising money for Adri. It's been going on a week and nearly 3K has been raised for her trip. The cool thing is that on the page, the casting director is keeping a photo album updated of all of the reality stars that donate money & agree to be an ambassador (meaning they will spread the word and tell their fans & friends to give as well), and there are so many of my favorite reality stars on there - donating to Adri! So cool. She also says that they are going to have a party and invite any of the stars that are close enough to come (probably none of them) to come meet her. So we are just so excited. You guys have no idea how appropriate this is for me. I am the biggest reality TV junky, so the fact that my kid is the first recipient of the "reality wish" is so fun for me!

The casting director contacted me today. They are about $1000 shy of her money goal so she has some ideas of other ways to raise money. She said she was going to be in LA for a week and would be getting autographs (I guess to sell for $?). She also said that a couple of the Survivors that are in tonight's finale want to give to Adri but have to wait until after tonight (a contractual thing). This whole thing has been so fun. The casting director has been super nice to our family and relentless in raising money for her wish. I don't know why she picked Adri but it has been so fitting for me. I love looking through the pictures to see who has given!

I don't know when her wish party will be, but we'll get to meet her then. I wish Adri was big enough to care about any of that stuff. Disney can be her fun, and this can be mine. :)

Thanks Lynn. Sheesh I can't believe I never posted that on here myself. Anyway, the totals are in. All of the money was raised for the trip ($5100 and some change) and her wish party has been booked. It's going to be a lunchtime thing just a few days before we leave, but we are more comfortable with that. We are fine with the MAW people and the casting director personally inviting anyone they want to, but we didn't want a massive facebook invite for anyone who donated. When we were in the hospital someone set up a caringbridge site that has had 55K hits since January. A "prayers for Adri" page on facebook that was set up has over 5K members. It's neat that some many people supported us - we don't know that many people!, so we have no clue why her story got so much attention - but we want to err on the safe side when it comes to posting information out there, you know? I had a weird situation in a CVS once, several months before her surgery, where a stranger told me to watch out because people take little girls that look like her (WHAT?!?!), and so I'm not as naive as I used to be and try to be cautious.

Anyway, not a big deal, just something that as a mom we asked if we could just let them personally invite any donors they'd like to and it would just be our family. I think that will be less overwhelming for Adri and allow her to really interact with the people who had the biggest hand in getting this money raised. We have had fun with all of this.

Adri's wish party is going to be next Wednesday at a local park. There will be pizza, cake, and some gifts. We are so excited! We'll then leave on Saturday. I am in full-on planning mode now. :)

I feel pretty sure I've said this before, but DH and I keep talking and we really want this to be a trip where we soak it all in instead of cramming it all in. We tried to cram last spring when we went and it just made for very tired mommy and daughter. Adri had lost her voice by the end of the week because we pushed her too hard. So our plan is to come home every day for a nap and then go back to the parks after that based on how the kids are doing. There may be a night where one of us will stay back with Cooper and the other will take Adri back to MK for a parade or something.

But we both agree that if we soak in everything that GKTW has to offer, get to do BBB and CRT as well as Cooper's first haircut at the Harmony Barbershop (booked that yesterday - so excited!), then everything else in the week is just going to be gravy.

So our loose plan as of now is to get there Saturday late afternoon and just explore GKTW, go to orientation, do Mayor Clayton's party, and get to bed early. Sunday will be MK day with a break in the middle of the day. Monday will be a Disney day but what we do is TBD based on how things went the first day. Tuesday is our day of ressies - Cooper's haircut, Adri's BBB, and CRT for lunch. We'll nap again and head back out to the parks that evening. Then Wednesday is going to be our very low key day to give the kids a break. We'll do Sea World that morning and then nap. We aren't going to make any plans for the evening. If all went well we may go to Universal for a little while, but maybe not. We may just play at the pool and explore the village. Thursday is going to be our Universal day to come home for a late nap and enjoy the Christmas festivities that evening. Then Friday we leave. We've decided to go home the long way (adds an hour to an 8 1/2 hour drive) so that we can visit some very good friends in South Georgia. Because of that we're going to spend a good bit of Friday afternoon with them and then drive to Atlanta to a hotel and make the last 2 1/2 hours home on Saturday morning. Then on Monday DH goes back to work and it's when he does his 10 hour days, he graduates the following Saturday, and Adri has her MRI the following Tuesday. It's going to be busy busy so we want to soak in all the fun while we're there.

The wish party was so much fun! It was perfect. Just perfect. We honestly had been a little nervous about the party. Adri didn't really understand the concept. I mean, she's 3. She knows she's going to Disney and she knows she wished for that, but she's been to Disney before so she isn't fully grasping that this is a special trip. But the idea of a party because of a trip she just didn't understand. In her mind, what's a party where none of her friends are there and she doesn't know anybody? So we've kind of been talking a lot about how special this is and how thankful we are and all of that, to build excitement.

We get there and it's just the Marketing Coordinator for the SC chapter and the casting director that did all of the fundraising. And honestly, we weren't sure if that was going to be it or not. We introduced ourselves and within a few minutes Adri was asking for lunch and Tona (casting director) said that one more special guest was coming. I wasn't sure who it was.

Turns out that Cyrus (from King of the Crown, which was the show that by far raised the most money $ from the competition) is good friends with Tona. He told her that there was a girl he coached in pageants that had actually been all of the princesses at Disney and was great with kids. So they invited this girl to the party. She couldn't be in Disney princess character because of her contract with them, so she was just princess Mikayla. But she comes walking through the park and Adri's eyes got so bright. Now mind you, it's noon in a very popular park in the area and there are kids EVERYWHERE oohing and ahhing over this girl. She comes up to our shelter that was reserved and Adri runs to meet her. She says, "are you Adri?" and Adri grabs her hand and they walk to the shelter together.

Once they got there, she gave Adri a princess book and brought pictures of every Disney princess (who actually, were all her - she has played every one at MK except for Mulan) and each of them had signed a special message. Then she taught Adri how to wave like a princess, curtsy (sp?) like a princess, hug like a princess, dance like a princess, play pat-a-cake like a princess and on and on. Then Adri sat in her lap and she read her a book. Then we had lunch, opened presents, and ate cake. And this girl - in blazing heat and fully decked out in princess garb did it all with Adri. And she was in character the whole time. It was awesome. Then after the eating and present opening, Adri took her to the playground where they did all sorts of stuff. She even convinced her to go down the slide with her in her big dress and crinlin. Her mom was there with her so it was just our family, the MAW staff person, the casting director, the princess, and her mom. But it was perfect. I think a big crowd would've been intimidating.

The girl and her mom were so gracious and I think the casting director and MAW staff girl had fun watching all of the interaction. Adri was in heaven! One of her gifts was a dress with matching crown, shoes, earrings, and wand, so they dressed up and posed together. Then she also got a princess teepee and they sat in there and had a tea party together. Honestly, this was like a wish for Adri. She's not going to understand when the Disney princesses don't just follow her around the whole time. Ha!

I'm going to edit some pictures and upload them but wanted to share the story. Tona said that they could've bombarded us with people (I guess a lot of the reality contestants actually wanted to come?), but I'm actually glad we did it this way. This was more fitting for the wish. She did invite us to a dinner that she is doing in September where there will be a "reality stars" table so that the people that gave will have a chance to meet her. She also had a bunch of signed pictures for us but had to check with MAW before giving them to us (something about national standards for MAW and not doing "extras" that could be considered a wish), so that will be a fun treat for me later. :)

We had the time of our lives! I kept a daily journal so that it wouldn't be so hard to do a TR once I got back. I'll try to get that soon. Here's a sneak peek:

Satuday: travel, explore GKTW, party w/Mayor Clayton
Sunday: MK!, special meet & greet with princesses
Monday: AK, DHS, long nap, MK & last minute ressie at CP - lots of fun!
Tuesday: MK including Coop's first haircut and CRT. Very fun beach party at GKTW that night.
Wednesday: Universal and some friends came to spend the evening with us. Adri sang in Village Idol - highlight of our entire trip!
Thursday: Islands of Adventure and Christmas
Friday: final goodbyes and headed halfway home, visiting special friends along the way
Saturday: finished the trip and took long naps in our own beds!

OMG, I can't believe we've been home 2 weeks and I haven't posted anymore than a tease yet. I kept a very detailed journal of each day of the trip, but we've had a lot of chaos in our home since we got back. Our car broke down, both computers crashed, I found out I'm pregnant (HUGE shock to us), my hubby graduated with his PhD, and school started back for him (he's an asst principal)... so I just haven't been able to spend the time on a detailed report. I did, however, get stuff on my blog for friends and family to read, but I was planning on giving you guys more details, as that post is written to people who don't know anything about GKTW or taking a trip to Disney with MAW. I'm going to go ahead and give a link to the blog report, which has lots of pictures and hopefully soon I'll have the time to get each day's report on here because I think that'll make it easier for people to read in the future.

Well you have been busy! Congrats on the baby and the Phd! Don't worry about not getting to a detailed report. It takes so much time. Just sticking around to answer others' questions is a big help. Going to go check out the blog now....
