Rent vs Taxi in StM, need to move 7!

Avis is not showing any availability for a van in St Marten on the day we are there. We need to move seven people around. I can get two cars for about $60 for the day. How close is the Avis desk to the port? Any other rental companies that have vans that folks have experience with? The other option I can think of is to try to hire a taxi for the for the day. How much? We want to hop around the Island.

Last year my husband and I hopped around St. Martin using a taxi. It was $22 a person, and we went everywhere. The French side was so much nicer, and since it was really HOT, the taxi with A/C was great to come back to. We shared with another couple, which was nice too. This year we're on the 9/21 eastern, and we plan to hire a taxi again. We'll stop at a beach this time and have them come back for us. Anita.

Avis' Great Bay Marina site (PH5) is about a 5-minute walk from the dock.

If you hire a taxi for the day, that means that it is $22 per person? So $154 plus a tip. Seems a rental would be cheaper, if we can get a van, or even two rentals. So what other rental companies, RELIABLE ones, are near the port, I can only find Hertz and Avis, will Eurocar deliver? I have noted some pretty wild stories from other folks about walk-up rentals on StM being less than safe, clean, covered.

We once had a driver on Barbados, hired for the day, who got pretty snotty by the day's end, because we did keep him hopping all day. How good are the cabs in StM? Anyone know particular drivers?
