I read on RADP that Caribbean Beach Resort was going to be closing for 4 months - starting Sept. 8th. It is for rehab of Old Port Royale. Wondering if anyone here has been told that. When I went on Disney.com for the dates that we already have reservations for it says to check a different resort or time!!!! We have reservations for October. Hope that this isn't causing a 'false alarm'!!!!!

I read this on the AOL boards too - we have Nov reservations for the first time there.
Any official word??

I think something is up. Just went on the WDW site and tried to book a ressie for both Nov and Dec. It came up to alternate resorts. Hope someone has more info soon. I will try to call first thing in the morning to get an official response.
This will now be the second time this has happened to me in one year - had a ressie for 1/02 for Pop Century and now this. Oh well, at least in Jan we were given an upgrade to AKL at the same price.

Yikes - I have a reservation for 1 night on December 6 before we move to BWV. I wouldn't mind an upgrade to Boardwalk Inn, even if we have to pay a little more.
I just checked Expedia and it shows no rooms. They had both promotional and regular rooms last week when I checked it.

I sure hope not! If that is true, why would Disney have included CBR in all the discount codes? Why not exclude like ASMo or CSR?
Looking forward to any news or confirmation....

If true will Disney accomadate guests who have current reservations at CBR for the same price they reserved at another resort. DS made reservations using codes for 5 nights beginning X-mas day. And does anyone know when they will begin to let guests know.

How come everything Disney does has to start as a rumor anyway? The affected people are always the last to know, CM's and Guests. I was at POR last year, less than a month before it was "unofficially" slated to close, and no one including the managers had any definitive answer. Thanksgiving is busy enough without them dropping the most popular resort from the inventory for that time period. (at least as far as occupancy percentage goes)

OK, just got off the phone. It is closing by Sept 8th & they HOPE it will be avail by Dec 1st. They are calling people by their arrival date & offering another moderate. Since we're coming at the very end of the scheduled rehab she said not to expect a call until early November.
I'm not happy about this at all, I don't want to be hanging out there until a month before not knowing where we're staying. I asked if I could switch over to AKL, but she said no AP rates were available & it was a big jump in price. So basically what I'm taking this to mean is that they're not offering anything to us until they call (on their schedule) to move us & if we chg resorts now it's on our own decision.

OK, just got off the phone. It is closing by Sept 8th & they HOPE it will be avail by Dec 1st. They are calling people by their arrival date & offering another moderate.
My trip is from Oct 24-28 at CBR. Does that mean I won't be able to find out where I am going to stay until I arrive? Then I won't be able to make room request and get the room I want!!!!
What kind of system is that????? I am starting to feel disappointed now. I wonder what happened to those who had a res at POFQ last time when it was shut down...
Looking for more confirmation. Thanks.

izzarelli,
Sorry to hear about your problem. It sure sounds like what happened to us with POFQ last year! We waited and waited for a call and it came five days before we were to leave! They gave us a great deal at AKL, but I think is was because they forgot about us! Also, they were not budging on placing people in another moderate. There were a lot of disappointed and angry people out there last year. I hate to see that happen again.
If I had it to do over again, I would probably switch to AKL right away. I can't believe AP rates are already gone. You might want to try again. You know how answers change with every phone call! Being up in the air like we were last year for a few months just waiting for "the call" really spoiled the anticipation of our trip, which is almost as much fun as being there.
Good luck with whatever you do!

Hi again :)
Well, I couldn't stand the 20 mins of sitting here not knowing so I switched us over to AKL. It's standard view for $22 more a night AP rate, this CM was a ton more helpful.
I've only stayed in the savannah rooms, how are the views from the standards? We're taking my dad for his first trip & don't want him to be disappointed.

It is happening again!! LOL When they closed FQ we had ressies there and now we have ressies for CBR and it is closing. LOL
I am curious when my dreams rep will hear something. We will wait and see.
One can only hope for a deluxe upgrade. :) If not, I would choose between FQ (stayed there before) and cs(never stayed there before) I have no desire to stay at por.

I learned it from Intercot that CBR will be completely closed during the renovation because Disney does not want traffic near the Old Port Royale....
My DU rep has just talked to CM at CRO and the CM said Disney will contact visitors...(when???)
I don't like the feeling of waiting. So I have asked my DU agent to chang the resort for me. Hopefully CSR will be available for the same rate because that was our first choice!! keep my fingers crossed XXXXX

BOO-HISS to Disney.
We have friends going at same time we are who have not made ressies yet. Now we have to tell them we have no idea where we will be!
Plus, we cancelled Dolphin reservations at a 155 a night rate to go with CBR because I specifically wanted a rehabbed room and it was still close to EPCOT.
I'm very mad that Disney included CBR in the round of Discount when you know darn well, these plans were on the board.

I just checked Expedia again and they show no availability for all of December. January 1 is the first date. December 1 may be wishful thinking.
I question this sudden decision. My guess is that they saw that room bookings are down for the fall and could save money by closing the entire resort and consolidating the guests into other resorts. Plus they could get the food court renovation done easier if guests were not around. If they knew they were renovating the food court this fall, couldn't they have announced this months ago? They didn't realize safety might be an issue months ago?

This is definitely one of the business strategy that Disney uses. They are just "testing the water." They don't want to annouce the news until they are sure that they won't lose any potential business by closing the CBR. I guess the attendence rate at CBR, or any other moderate resort is quite low so that visitors can be shuffled to a different places....
Disney is definitely receiving an email message from me.

We have a 1 night ressie at CBR for Dec. 4, then over to the Wilderness Lodge. (We just wanted to try CBR to see if we would like to stay there in the future) We too were in on the Pop Century deal and were upgraded to AKL for very little additional $. I'd take another night at WL for the same rate as CBR, but who knows, the rehab may be complete by then. I just don't like playing the waiting game-again!

I have reservations there in mid-Sept, so they better call me soon!!! I really wanted to stay there, but I'm hoping for a good deal somewhere else. The only place I won't stay is Coronado Springs (didn't like it at all), and the All-Stars (nothing against the All-Stars, I'm just bored with them since we ALWAYS stay there! LOL!). Hmmm, I think I will wait for the call and see what they offer! Kind of like a game of chance, I guess! Does anyone have a reservation right after Sept. 8th? You will probably get the first call and you have to report to us what they offer!!!

Heard on Thursday or Friday that Disney lost profits in the 3rd quarter. Do you think this has something to do with their food court renovation strategy?
If reservations were available a week ago doesn't that seem to be a bit weird that they are no longer?

I am very upset about this. I finally decided after 3 weeks of debating if I should spend the extra movey and stay at a Mod. resort to splurge and treat my family. I am planning a suprise vacation for my DH and I really was looking forward to d=staying at CBR. I really don't want to stay anywhere else. I am just so P...ed off right now. I am actually thinking of cancelling my plans. Does anyone have any photos of PO foodcourt?

I have reservations for Sept 12-15 at CBR.... it took me along time to chose where to stay, now I'm confused. Already did PO, and live 40 miles from Mexico, so I not too interested in CSR. Doing a Birthday Trip with my DD 17, and I have my reservation through DU.... I will be in contact with them tomorrow, find out what is happening... what a disappointment. Oh well, Just have to decide which Delux we want to stay, maybe I'll get a good deal..:p

Just called the Travel Co. which my ressies are with. I was told I'd be getting the phone call but since I'm going in early Dec. I 'll be last on the list. I mentioned to the CM that this had happened before with us (Pop Century) but we were very happy with the situation because we got AKL for $103.00 per night Standard and ended up being upgraded to pool view. I asked her if they were doing upgrades again and she said possibly, they should know more in a couple of weeks. By the way, I went on the official site, plugged in my dates and it came up with no availability. I also mentioned that I don't think I'll wait bcause then I may not get the alternate resort of my choice, and she agreed, its some times better to be pro-active. Anyway, I've rambled long enough. I hope this situation works out well for everyone. Friends of ours are going in Oct. for 5 nights (CBR) first visit with their 2 little girls. They are going to be very dissapointed.

Boy am I ever glad I changed my ressies from CBR to the Poly for Thanksgiving last week!! I cant imagine the mess we would be in if we hadnt decided to do a deluxe that trip. I feel so badly for everyone but especially those that are scheduled to stay there for Thanksgiving. Thats a big weekend at Disney and there isnt and wont be much available.
Now Im wondering if the reason CSR wasnt on the newest round of discounts is because this is the resort they will use to put all the displaced people at CBR???

I have to say, I am not surprised to hear that CBR will be closed in order to refurbish Old Port Royale. When I was there this past February, there was a lot of talk of them refurbishing OPR, and it was only a matter of when.
Within this past year, all of the rooms at CBR were completely refurbished, as well as the pools. Now after this OPR refurb is complete, the entire resort will have been refurbished. I honestly don't think this is a ploy to simply close CBR for financial reasons, in order to move people to other resorts.
I do feel so badly for everyone with CBR reservations. I know what it's like to have your heart set on this resort, or any resort really, and then not end up staying there. When planning our Feb 2002 trip, there was talk then of CBR closing, and I was NOT happy to think we'd be at a different resort because I was with relatives who had never stayed onsite before and they didnt want to stay anywhere else.
On the other side of the coin, I remember almost everyone being thrilled with the upgrades they were offered when those with reservations for Pop Century had to be relocated. I hope they do offer all of you good upgrades to one of deluxes, or better deals to move to one of the other moderates.

Hi izzarelli,
The views from the standard view rooms at the AKL are of the parking lot. You will not be able to see animals from a standard view room at the AKL.

I feel so bad for all of you. This is exactly what happened with French Quarter last year. I'd also like to second the opinion on Port Orleans, especially Riverside. This is an excellent resort and somewhat similar to CBR. And for those of you who are nervous about not getting your phone calls until the 11th hour, I'd call now and switch. I like to know exactly where I'm going too! :p

I have reservations for Septmember 16th, but was told it would be 2 weeks before I might receive a call when I called them a few minyutes ago. I booked through AAA. I plan on having my travel agent call them tomorrow and see if there are upgrades available.
Note to Disney people reading this: You should announce closures like this 6 months in advance, NOT 6 weeks. I realize that you need to rehab from time to time, but what could possibly be the justification for diddling with people's vacation plans on such short notice?

We have reservations at CBR 10/30 - 11/05. I hope we get an upgrade! I was torn about where to stay this trip, and we chose CBR because it is the only Mod we like and ASMO was not included in the code a few weeks ago. I am going to FORCE myself to wait for a call from CRO, even if it means waiting until 10/29! The longer they wait, maybe the better the chance the Mods will be sold out and they will offer us an upgrade for little money!

We have reservations for CBR 12/20 - 12/26 for two rooms. We decided to make an additional reservation for ASMu after reading all the news on the boards. We did this because we are worried that CRO will wait till the last minute to call us and we will not like what they have to offer.
Initially, we decided to make this trip because we already had AP's left over from our trip in January. We thought it could be a cheap trip so initially we booked ASMo. Then when codes came out we scheduled again for CBR because it was cheaper. When the bad news was released yesterday and with the uncertainty of whole deal we decided to book ASMu using the discount codes on the Walt Disney World Site. So we are now planning a very cheap trip of only $65/night (only Preferred was available).
The funny thing is I have been so nervous about using the codes, etc. that I have not yet cancelled the previous reservations. I currently have 6 reservations for the same week in December. I am planning on taking care of that tomorrow.

So, I am being pro-active. Yes, I am loosing the chance of a possible upgrade, but I like to know where I will be at during my honeymoon, NOW!

To all that had ressies at CBR and are disappointed, my condolences. Those switching to POR - you will LOVE it. I prefer POR anyway. The food court is great and so is the boat to DD. For me, I'm thrilled they are refurbishing OPR. That was my major disappointment this past July. I thought it really could use an update. I did not like thier food court at all. It's nice to see that Disney felt that way also. Now I just may go back to CBR after all. There were alot of CM's in meetings when I was there in July. It looked like alot of "bigwigs" walking around. Maybe this is what they were discussing.

We have reservations at CBR starting November 16th... I guess it will be awhile before we hear from Disney... I have two different thoughts on this whole issue...
1. It is wrong for Disney to take deposits from people for CBR when they knew they would be closing the resort... this seems to be a purely money driven decision. I think they feared that some people might not make any reservations if they knew in advance that CBR would be closed. Now people, like us, are locked in if they purchased plane tickets and Disney still gets your money and we have to take whatever alternate resort Disney offers. Don't get me wrong, Disney should be refurbishing their resorts... otherwise we would just read posts complaining how run down CBR has become... but they should not keep the plans to themselves and sell rooms at a discount when they know they are shutting the resort down.
2. The above being said, I am happy just to be going on vacation in November and to be in Disney World. I'm sure I will enjoy whatever resort I end up in and maybe even lucky enough to get upgraded to a deluxe resort. I'm not going to stress about this... there are too many other more important things to worry about in life.

Just got back from vacation only to find out that I won't be at CBR from Dec. 11-14!!! This was going to be my first stay at a moderate and I was so excited! Called CRO this AM and they said WDW would be in touch about ressie changes. Tried for POR or POFQ and they are booked (go figure!!). Ugh!!! I have had my reservations at CBR for Sept 21st - 29th since January. With a few changes and everything my room price for a King was $89 a night. While my fiancee and I would be okay with POFQ or POR, we really don't want CSR. We were really looking forward to a beach and hammocks. I just told my fiancee and he sounds heart broken, he had set himself up for CBR and doesn't take change well. I'm going to wait for the phone call and keep my fingers crossed that we get the bump to deluxe. I'd even be willing to pay a few (not many) more dollars a night, though it wasn't my decision to move.

I hope everyone doesn't book second reservations for the week of Thanksgiving. During a busy time, it's frustrating enough to be bumped from your first choice resort. But to then add the difficulties of lots of people holding multiple ressies "just in case" it might be real hard for others then to even get an option for their move. I hope it doesn't come to "We only have THIS resort for you, Mrs. Traveller--all the other resorts are booked at that time."

After months of deliberation about where the most romantic place for our honeymoon was that we could afford they go and close CBR after our ressies are made. Patience is not a virtue I possess. I had my heart set on CBR. Now I have no idea what to do. I really wanted our honeymoon to be special and romantic. I've got enough stress with the wedding without having to worry where we are going to be staying. It doesn't help that I got stuck with a travel agent that doesn't know disney world from disneyland. My comment wasn't aimed specifically at you--sorry if you felt it was. I was just reading on other posts that some people have 2 and 3 different reservations booked and aren't feeling any stress regarding this because "they're covered." Well, when CRO calls me to tell me what they can offer me and several others have "extra" ressies booked, it is going to limit my options. I know it's a very common practice with but it just adds to the dilemma of those of us in this unfortunate situation.

I feel really bad for all of you. I know EXACTLY how you feel as we experienced the same thing last year with FQ. Just to let you know, though, they were not generous, at all, with upgrading people to deluxe resorts at no charge. If you have a great code rate and want to go to a deluxe, if they follow the same plan, which it sounds like with the calls, you will have to pay to do so. Last year we had the FQ booked for $85 per night. I think they offered us AKL for $109 a night or something like that. Otherwise, we were told to switch to another moderate for the same price. That was it. Nothing else. Also, be aware that there were some people, while we were there, that showed up at FQ to find it was closed and then walked over to Riverside to find out what happened. They had been booked into Riverside but Disney forgot to let them know. They were not happy...and I don't blame them.
That being said, our DU agent was absolutely wonderful in trying to get everything sorted out. He really made a splendid effort and even called me by phone when he realized how upset I was about this whole thing. That was reassuring. And, Disney had the same attitude towards it as they seem to have this time. "We have a team working on it and they will be in touch. Until then there is nothing that we can do about it. You will be offered another moderate at the same price. And, possibly be able to upgrade to a deluxe for a little more." Their definition of a "little" and mine were completely different. I hope Disney learned something from last year and is a bit more flexible in what they offer. Good Luck.
FQ and Riverside, though, are both very nice resorts.

Especially for those of you who will be on your honeymoon. I know how lovely that beach is at CBR. I have seen many newlyweds in the hammocks. I hope everything works out for you. Did they note on your reservation that you would be on your honeymoon, or do you have a package?

Ok guys, I'm reading all the posts and now I'm wondering if my dates will be affected. We'll be there Dec. 14-19 and then WL from Dec. 19-24. I thought they were trying to have the renovations done by the end of November. And I have also read that they are not taking any reservations in early January. You think my dates in December will be part of all this? This will be our 30th anniversary and I was hoping for an upgrade at CBR, BUT...... you never can tell now. Any help?
I had the same thing happen to me last Dec with POFQ and I know it is frustrating but Disney will not leave you out in the cold and you will get the same rate at another moderate resort. I have stayed in them all and they are ALL very nice, and very romantic. Do not count on getting really great upgrades to deluxe resorts though, we were offered upgrades but at higher prices.
I also just stayed in CBR in May and I love the resort and thought the refurb on the rooms was wonderful but the one thing we did notice was the pools and the main building needed to be redone. The main pool only had one cannon shooting water and only a little water and only sometimes, and I noticed a lot of mildew on the pool tiles of both the main pool and the pool by Trinidad North.
Those that have to switch resorts will be getting a resort that every part is up to Disney standards and yes CBR is lovely but so are all the other Disney resorts. I got very upset in Dec with FQ closing also but we switched to CSR and had a lovely time. Don't sweat what you can't change--you will be in WDW and no matter which resort it will be great and you will be in WDW!!!!! :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

I am just so upset after finding this all out tonight. We have a ressie at CBR for our honeymoon from September 15-23. We have already had to change all our wedding plans from what we originally picked into something completely different. We were counting on our Disney honeymoon trip to make it all better. Throughout all the wedding "junk" it is the one thing that had been consistent. And now that has changed. I am not even mad about it, just very upset. I feel hurt and betrayed about this. So maybe they didn't know when we booked our trip back in January, but I am sure they have known for awhile now. Part of me just hopes that I will get down there and find out that this isn't real :(

ZPT1022,
I can totally understand your frustration since I am also one of the CBR visitors during this fall and I am also going there for my honeymoon.
Have you try to change your res yet? CM probably won't call you until next week or the week after that. But I am sure that you will be placed at a decent resort since all Disney resorts are equally magical. Perhaps CM might offer you an upgrade since you are on your honeymoon!!
Don't be upset!! Keep a happy thought!

Holy cow! I've been away from the DIS since Friday and I come back to this news. I was all excited about staying at the CBR in November, but as long as they put me in another resort (moderate or above) I'll be happy. I originally wanted CSR anyway, so maybe I'll end up there for the discounted rate and it will all be for the best. I'm actually kind of excited to wait and see what they offer. And if I'm not satisfied (I don't particularly want to stay at PO) I may just move offsite. For the honeymooners who have posted, if you haven't done so already I'd suggest you call CRO and have it noted on your reservation that you're on your honeymoon. I would think if they were choosing who to upgrade, you should be first on the list (I'm just guessing on this, but it would make sense.) I wonder if they actually have any guidelines about who to upgrade. Maybe it's just how nice you are when they call!
