View Full Version : DESPERATELY need HELP for August 17
Tinkerbells Magic
08-03-2002, 11:22 AM
Friends of ours gave us a this cruise as a surprise and a room (that accomodates 4) as a gift on August 17. Being a family of 6, we have tried to see if we could upgrade to a larger room and the rooms have been sold out for quite sometime. (Though we have kept checking in case of any changes.)
We initially made plans for our youngest two to stay with friends (who were quite happy due to the novelty of spending the night, ice cream, presents when we got home for them, etc...). Problem is one of them is chronically ill, but stable, and the friends who initially could take her and her sister have had a family crisis arise and will not be able to keep them. We have been able to find a close friend to keep one of the girls, but not the other due to her medical issues.
Our little girl, Grace, is 3 1/2 and requires nightly shots of interferon due to medical problems she came to us with from a Cambodian orphanage 2 years ago.
We have scurried around trying to find friends she knows and trusts and we know and trust who are also trained in giving her her injections (or capable of being trained), but to no avail.
Disney has said that she can come with us, but CANNOT be registered under our room due to the room capacity of 4 and the fire marshal rules. They said the only way she could accompany us would be for "friends" to register her to their room whose occupancy rate is not already full, under OUR last name and as OUR daughter. (We pay the additional fare too ) She would only be required to be shown present in that room during the mandatory on deck fire drill on the first night of the cruise. (They want everyone lined up with life vests and at their assigned location according to room during the drill) After that she can be with us 100% of the time, as they do not care who sleeps where and she would be assigned to dine with us as well as our responsibility for the entire cruise. They said it is not uncommon that groups or large families travelling do this because of occupancy rate limitations. THE DIFFERENCE HERE IS WE HAVE NO FRIENDS OR FAMILY TRAVELLING WITH US AND NO WHERE ELSE TO TURN EXCEPT TO THIS BOARD. We are hoping for an angel.
We are HOPING and PRAYING someone out there as a family of 2 or 3 registered in a room for 4 or a family of 4 registered in a room for 5, would be willing to add her on as a FRIEND, in our last name, to their cabin so that she can accompany us and I can give her her nightly injections (which she cannot miss) and be there for her. (They injections make her a little nauseous at times.) The cruise was originally given to my husband (and our family) due to ongoing health problems my husband has had that have prevented him from being able to work and have caused major changes in our family. The idea was to lift some stress and put some fun and *magic* back into his way of thinking. He cannot not go. I cannot not go, as he cannot take care of the girls from a wheelchair and walker for a whole week (plus all the meds he is on). We are in a quandary. The date can't be changed because of the Florida Resident Special our friend got. Anybody out there who can help or knows someone who might be able to, PLEASE ask them. We would be forever grateful to you.
Sorry to have had to ask, but I don't know what else to do.
Sincerely,
Liz and family

Wish I could help. We are going in October on the MAGIC.
Would an option be to see if you could move the reservation to a time when DCL has two adjoining rooms and you can take everyone?
Keep us posted.

Regretfully I'm cruising a week later, otherwise I'd be happy to help.
I can make one suggestion though--if you can't find anyone to help, but have a place for your DD to stay at home except for the medical needs, look into having the Visiting Nurse Association or another home care agency come in to give her her nightly injections and leave her with your friends.
One other thought, are the injections IM or IV? If they are IV, perhaps you could have a port put in for the week so the caregivers would only have to inject the line, rather than the vein.

Gosh, wish we could help, but we're not on that cruise. I just checked the cruise list and saw the following DIS'ers will be on that ship and haven't responded on this thread yet. Maybe you can send them an email/private message to solicit their help.

They may be very willing and able, but haven't been back to this board recently. Just a thought...

WOW! :) To say that we are overwhelmed with everyone's thoughts, prayers, and kindness is an UNDERSTATEMENT! :D
We just got back from out of town last night. I am writing this in the wee hours of the morning to reply to everyone. GOD BLESS YOU ALL for CARING SO MUCH! To turn on the computer and pull up DIS and see so many beautiful, caring posts FILLED our hearts and brought tears to our eyes. We just couldn't BELIEVE that so many people, complete strangers mind you, would extend such warm and kind thoughts to us. :) :) :) Thank you to ALL you WONDERFUL people from the bottom of our hearts!
The update, so far, is there is no family going on August 17 that has contacted us with less than full occupancy. (Can't imagine why ;) ) We knew it was a long shot. It sure was touching to hear from so many that wished they could help though. We are still hoping there is a family out there that hasn't read this yet or a family travelling on this date that can put the word out to others they know who are travelling then too.
In answer to both public and private e-mails, her shots have to be given nightly, they have to be drawn up (not pre-measured) and sterile technique MUST be followed in order to keep from introducing bacteria and other germs into her body via the needle and the injection site. Training someone properly and them being TOTALLY comfortable injecting a three year old child, and restraining her (so as to keep yourself from being kicked in the face or landing the needle somewhere other than intended) if necessary, is of utmost importance. It is awfully difficult to know and love a child that is not yours and find the courage and willingness to give them an injection that you know is going to hurt them, make them feel crappy inside afterward and make them mad as heck at you for the moment. Most people don't even like GETTING shots, much less the idea of giving them. Honestly, I wouldn't want to do it either (if I was in their shoes).
We have also looked into having a home nursing service come in nightly to do the injections, as was offered as a suggestion by someone. Complete strangers rotationally (different staff/changing shifts) would be coming in every night to give her a her shot. Different people unknown to her, coming nightly, is going to add quite a bit of undue stress and panic to her 3 year old mind, especially without the reassurance of her family. She has been put through an unbelievable amount of stress for being so young already. She had previously been placed with 4 other caregivers in another country, prior to us, been subjected to rural third world country "medical" beliefs and practices, that though done out of real love and concern for her, would be considered torturous and abusive by US standards, gone without her basics needs being met for weeks, and a whole lot more. The whole situation is very worrisome. The answer may well be not to go.
We have been tossing it around in our heads over and over from every which way. If it is not meant to be, it is not meant to be. I am thinking about sending a friend of mine in my place to help with the other two kids and make things go smoothly for my husband as well. He really does need this vacation, as do our oldest kids, who need a chance to loosen up and be kids for awhile again. They have taken on a lot of responsibility this year, though it was unintentionally and unexpectedly.
God always has a way of working things out. We thank you ALL for your prayers, warm and kind thoughts, and the true caring of strangers that came through so evident and strongly in the posts. God bless you ALL and THANK YOU for bolstering our hearts and minds. You have no idea how much we needed that tonight and the effect it will continue to have on us in the months to come.
I'm falling asleep. Got to go to bed before I make no sense at all! BLESS YOU ALL! :D :D :D :D :D
Sincerely,
Liz and family

Liz- Your compassion for your little girl is so warming to the heart! You've been thinking everything out! (even the rotating shifts of visiting nurses-which would be stressful to a little child) I'll still pray for a wonderful answer for your family!!

I just finished writing an involved update with the POSITIVE NEWS that our daughter, Grace, will be able to go with us on Aug. 17 due to the generosity and kind-hearted COMPASSION of Disney Cruise Line's "Mouse upstairs" and his VERY hard working resourceful assistants. :)
I don't know WHAT buttoned I pushed, but the original reply I just wrote is GONE, nowhere to be seen again, best I can tell. I will NEVER understand the complex relationship I have with this computer! It by far wins hands down, everytime. ;)
As I am bleary-eyed and tired beyond making sense at 3 am in the morning, I will write later today to try to reconstruct the post and include the MANY, MANY thanks I owe to the individuals, families, and people of this board that held us in prayer and sent pixie dust our way. Let me tell you, it REALLY did work true MAGIC!!!
Story at 11...or 12....or 1. Got to find a quiet moment away from 4 kids to write and compose my thoughts, but I will. Just wanted to update you ASAP, though regretfully only in part at the moment due to my computer error. Dreams really do come true and to say that Disney really is MAGIC is an understatement! Thank you all for holding us in prayer and thought and God bless! Will write more tomorrow. And also will be responding to today's days latest e-mails that included SO many TRULY wonderful, generous, strangers that said they thought they might be able to helpas well. Going to bed with PEACE in my mind, a full heart and thankfulness to God, for showing me, AGAIN, this time through the people of this board, how much GOOD really does exist in this world, that acts of kindness every day- all around the world - FAR outweigh the terrible, awful, unexplainable acts of a few. That kindness, goodness, and love still have the upper hand and always will. < smiling, knowing angels all around :) > Good night and God bless you ALL! :)
Most sincerely,
Liz and family :) :) :)

I finally have the time to write everyone. I apologize for not being able to sooner. 4 kids and a husband who does not get around well keeps me hopping! Our whole family sincerely thanks EACH AND EVERY ONE of you out there, known and unknown, who have held us in their hearts and minds and worked and prayed for a solution. :D What a RELIEVED (understatement), and still stunned, mother I am now! It is truly BEYOND words to figure out how to say thank you and fully represent the appreciation we have in our hearts for this incredibly generous and unexpected showing of true compassion and caring that was extended to us ever so GRACIOUSLY.
THE warm-hearted "Mouse" upstairs at DCL contacted us, having heard about our predicament, and said he thought he might be able to help our family situation by making it possible for Grace to come along too and thought it would be more ideal for her (and less worrisome) to have us administer her shots as we have always done up to this point. He said he wouldn't know yet, as it would take some time to go through the ship room by room and see what, if anything, could be done with the ship being a full sailing. He told us to rest assured, he had one of his best men...er "mice" who would be working on it tonight...and by morning he should have an answer as to whether this was possible or if other options needed to be explored. I have to say, I have never talked to a kinder, more down to earth mouse. He did NOT want credit, he simply wanted to help and see if there was anything in his power DCL could do to help our situation. (I did ask, however, if I may share their kindness publicly, before I wrote this.)
A kind and EXTRAORDINARILY dedicated staff worked together and pulled off the impossible, (NO small feat on a full ship!) finding a way we could all stay together and take our 3 1/2 year old WITH us, so we could administer her shots ourselves. Equally amazing was that we were upgraded and provided with a handicap accessible room for my husband (extremely helpful as it has multiple low safety rails, a lower sink, shower bench, room to maneuver without risking hurting his extended leg.) THEN, the "Mouse upstairs" connected us to a wonderful lady who had intuitive foresight and suggested we might need a refrigerator to be put in the room to keep our daughter's vials of meds. at an even temp., a sharps box so we wouldn't have to carry one with us, extra pillows, Fed-Ex documents sent ASAP to include Grace and please, if there is anything else we can do to be helpful, just say the word. Here's my number, just let me know." I just listened on the other end of the phone, STUNNED, my ear straining to detect the slightest hint of a relatives voice who might be behind this call and about to say "ha! ...gotcha, didn't I?!". :p (It is a long standing tradition in our family)
Wow, let me tell you, phone calls like the ones of that day, from the kindness of strangers, create incredibly comforting memories that carry you through the tougher days. It was like angels were visited on us. All the worry, the anxiety, the burden of what to do, who should go, who should not go, how will the older girls would take it if I don't go, how would my husband manage, would my older girls do well with a friend of mine along to help instead, would this cause resentment among the girls, etc...was GONE! Suddenly we were a family going on a sorely (another huge understatement) needed VACATION together. Phew!
We let our oldest two girls tell little Gracie. Together they told her that Mickey and Minnie had Tinkerbell (her favorite :) ) phone mommy and daddy and tell them that they specially wanted Gracie to come with us on the Disney trip next week. We watched her face turn from calm to WONDER and WIDE-EYED AWE, as understanding swept across her face. Frozen in place, she whispered so quietly "Tink-a-bell...???... invited...... (high ascending scream) MEEEEEEEEEEEE???!!!!!!!!!!" and flew into 7 year old Lily's arm's grinning so widely from ear to ear her eyes almost disappeared. :teeth: Lily, who had squatted down to eye-level to tell her in a more personal fashion, got knocked in the head so hard from the impact of Gracie exuberantly flying at her to hug her, that she landed flat backwards on the floor, legs splayed out, face wincing from the sudden, hard head banging. Lily lay there pinned, holding her face, trying to protect herself from further hysterical toddler injury. Gracie, still TOTALLY caught up in the excitement and oblivious to Lily's pain, jumped up and down on Lily's stomach, her legs squeezing Lily's sides and her arms tightly wrapped around Lily's neck, jerking Lily's poor head off the floor UP and DOWN with every bounce of her bottom on Lily's stomach. :Pinkbounc :bounce:
All the while she is yelling in Lily's face, "Lily!!! Anna!!! I goin' to see TINK-A-BELL!!!!!!!!!! and Mickey and Minnie and TINK-A-BELL!!!!!!!!!!!!" It was hysterical! :bounce: :D
Disney and it's wonderful staff and crew have certainly made our little Gracie believe in the true *MAGIC* of Disney and that "Tink-a-bell" really DOES exist and have true *MAGICAL* pixie dust that she can use to make wonderful, HAPPY things come true. Our entire family holds you all in the highest respect for the incredibly GENUINE, CARING, and GRACIOUS help you extended our family out of the KINDNESS of your hearts and the SIMPLE desire to help and affect a difference where you saw you could. GOD BLESS YOU, ALL! :) :) :)
Never, ever underestimate the power of prayer and faith. TOGETHER everyone here helped make this happen. What an AWESOME group to be a part of! :) Thank you for including us in your "family". :p
Most sincerely,
Liz and family :D

Pixie dust, the mouse and God. What a combo. I too believe in the power of prayer, and we were all praying for you. More prayers for you and your family as you enjoy your trip with tinkabell. With the sometimes bad things we hear of Disney Corporate, it's nice to hear there still is a whole lot of magic!
Let us know how Gracie enjoyed her trip, you have a good way with words. I cried and laughed when I read your post. God Bless.

Liz,
I am so happy for you and your family. What a beautiful name for such a precious daughter, Grace. I am sitting here at work with tears streaming down my face. This story shows how the power of prayer and friendship really does work. Great work on the part of DCL, Trinity, Osprey, all the Disers who kept bumping the original post up to the top and never gave up on trying to help you.
Liz, I hope you, your husband and the children have a wonderful time. It sounds like the really "BIG MOUSE" will be with you all the way.
God Bless!

Liz, ever since you wrote to me a number of weeks ago and we brainstormed about your situation, I've been thinking of you and your family and just praying that something would work out. I've been back and forth driving to MN and have been checking online at public libraries on the way there and back just to check on this thread.

We are truly inspired by the Mouse's generosity and wish to extend our thanks to all the people who made this happen. There is Magic at Disney and it lives in the hearts of all its employees.
The 'Tink-a-bell' story is absolutely touching and a memory to treasure. Thank you for sharing it with us. I hope the cruise will bring many more Magical moments for all of you and especially for Grace.

My son is diabetic and requires injections and we would never be able to leave him with someone else so I have complete sympathy for what you're going through. I truly thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown getting everybody and everything packed! All my "I'll get TOTALLY prepared ahead of time THIS time...flew out the window. Most had to get done today. Life has a way of not following the "plans" sometimes, doesn't it? Well Gracie was the positive side of that. :) Just got to stay in positive thinking when you get so tired and frazzled!
What a TRUE gift, miracle, and a huge burden and worry off our shoulders to be able to take her with us. :) :) :) Just wanted to thank you all ONCE AGAIN for EVERYTHING EVERYONE did to make this possible. I certainly will post a trip report, though I suspect I may be sleeping the first few days! We leave in three hours to take the dogs to the kennel at 7 am from here and drive the rest of the way. Then we overnight at the Radisson because it saves on parking fees.( PLUS, my husband is not one of those people who ever leaves on time, so I had to build in a "buffer" zone of this extra half day at the Radisson to make sure we board on Sat. before the ship departs. ) NOT ONCE are we ever on time. AHHHHHH! NO MORE! It wasn't until today he realized the ship doesn't leave on Friday, but Saturday. (Hey, but it got things done so we start out with less anxiety once we are ON THE ROAD!!! I told him I prepaid the Radisson, so I knew there was NO way he would consider NOT leaving tomorrow and try and bargain for another days time. ;) )
Thank you all once and again. At DCL, not only the "MOUSE" upstairs but ALL the mouse's staff and workers put much time into this. This was a major undertaking that MANY people at DCL pulled together with incredible grace, kindness, and generosity. THANK YOU! And thank you SHIRLEY too for your kind thoughts as I never did get a chance to get back to you. You have a HUGE fan club out there, you know! ;)
We will be back in touch and also give an update and report on COZUMEL NEEDY KIDS /Chrysalis Group. I will be meeting with one of their original founders and getting statistics, a write-up of their mission purpose, photos, etc...and try and get a whole, complete package of information that people can refer to when they are considering donating. For those who don't know, they are a great group of volunteers (founded by American women living there) that work on the sole behalf of educating the poorest children of Cozumel by making funds, supplies, and a family support system available to ensure success for the students they screen and pre-qualify. Many times these families have NEVER had anyone, ever attend school in generations. This is a chance to break the cycle of poverty, spark hope and change the present and future course of not only these children's lives, but their families.
Blessings to all!
Good night and BON VOYAGE! :)
Yippee! We are FINALLY going! Hard to believe the time is actually here! :) :) :)

Liz and Family,
I guess by the time you read this you should be home, so welcome home. I wanted to suggest that if you are not using Emla prior to Gracie's injections you may want to try it. My 6 month old has IS and requires a daily injection of a steroid and we use the Emla one hour prior to the shot and a lot of times he sleeps through them. It is a prescription cream that numbs the area of the injection.
Hope you guys had fun.

Liz and family on 8/17 cruise
Liz, The prayers worked! I was so excited to see you and your husband and 3 daughters on the cruise. We left home on 8/8 and I didn't know at that point if Grace would be coming on the cruise or not. I wasn't able to help you personally but I said many prayers for you and your family. That first night at Parrot Cay when I looked over and saw your family at the table next to ours, I couldn't believe my eyes! Every night at dinner I saw a happy family and it made my family also feel good because we had all discussed your situation when we were home and we all had you in our thoughts! I'm glad everything worked out so well!!!
Disney people are great!!!

Thanks Nana. I did see that one. Really, I need to just get a life and stop running to this thread to check everyday!!! I'd take it off of email notification, but I'm so afraid she'll do a trip report and I'll MISS IT !

Was there still a little girl who didn't get to go? Maybe I read wrong, but I was feeling sorry for the one that didn't get to go with the rest of the family.

I sent Liz an e-mail before the trip asking about the fourth daughter. She said that this little one is a one year old who was happy to be going on a "sleep over" with friends. I am not sure exactly how many months old she was, but she was small enough that the big deal they had made about the sleep over was enough for her.
I could not have left my baby but know people who do. We must each do what works best for us and our families.
Hoping Liz will write soon. If anyone finds a trip report elsewhere, give us a link to it on this thread, OK??

If Liz ever does post her cruise report - I would like her to know that Norm and I did go to the port and took pictures as she passed us - just tell her to email me a snelsonbrown@aol.com and I would be most happy for her to have them.

Unfortunately she doesn't accept email from this board...I did pm her but if she never comes back i guess she'll never get it...:( :( :(
to bad there were so many people here that were pulling for her and glad to hear it had worked out....
If any of the moderators could email her and let her know we all were wondering about her trip....I'm sure all the other DISers and I would be extremely grateful....

Well, I have never posted on this particular post before now, but I have read it and kept up with it from the beginning.. I guess I agree with a previous poster, that said maybe this didn't happen at ALL in the first place. I am always cinical, and I think it may have been a hoax. Now, when someone posts such a HUGE thing to ask of someone else, it's only natural they think of all the people who were SOOO willing to help them and they would have checked when they got home and gave an update. I think logic causes me to believe it was a hoax from the beginning..

I tend to agree, but why would someone go through all the trouble of writing a big ol' post, I guess the are DESPARATE just to get attention? Wonder if she's laughing reading our posts...
She may be overwhelmed from all what needs to go on when you get back from a trip (laundry, mail, groceries, life, etc) and her daughter's and husband's medical condition. Didn't someone see her on the boat, though? Didn't someone IM her?
If it was a hoax, shame on her...people don't appreciate being made fools at other expense.

I think jumping to the conclusion that this could have been a hoax is a bit hasty. People return from cruises and don't post for a while all the time. Besides the fact that she has 4 children and is probably a little busy.
Let's not jump to conclusions yet. :)

I corresponded with Liz via e-mail to let her know of the assistance being offered her by DCL. She most definitely was real and the assistance was real.
Unfortunately our lives get busy sometimes and I believe that is the case here. There could be any number of reasons why she has not posted. I know we all would love to hear an update on what happened, but that may or may not happen. I think it's time to let it go and move on.

Did you people that wanted to help do this for her or for yourselfs. I am amazed at how quickly a few of you have turned on Liz. How about the last post! If Liz posts another time great if not so be it. Anyone that was helping based on her getting back to you please next time include that in your post. Something like "I will help but you must get back to us within 2 weeks after your vacation or we will turn on you immediatly. We will call you a liar and an inconsiderate person." This way people will know what to expect.
Maybe as someone else said she is busy with her 4 children or she did not know it was a requirment that she must post back to the board. Get over it...give the nice lady a break.

Oh shoot, I deleted my "offending" post, and now it looks like Michelle is getting flamed:eek: She's the nicest person in the world, so ... I post once more.
No Mike, no one cried and prayed for Liz with strings attached. I had invested some emotion into her situation for a long period of time and just felt a bit hurt at being forgotten. It would be nice if she could start a new thread, if and when she has the chance to reply, that way there wouldn't be the daily disappointment of checking this thread for real news, and seeing non. It's OK if she does not reply.

It really doesn't matter what the real story about Liz and her family is. The outpouring of prayers and concern by the people on this board shows how terrific you ALL are.

I agree with our wonderful webmasters, and to Howardk613!!! We may not hear back right away, or at all.... never know!! But I do know that this is one incredible group of people here!!! I prefer to go on the assumption that this was not a hoax.... And would like to consider possibilities that have not been mentioned. Hey, it is back-to-school time, on top of back to work, back to 'life'... And with the medical concerns that were discussed, Dear God forbid that anything serious has happened!
Everyone on these boards seems to be the absolute greatest, as shown by this entire story!! I do not want to let a few negative posts (here, and one other recent thread too) change this opinion!
Hey, this is the Disney Cruise board!!! It is indeed all about happiness, faith, trust, and pixie dust!! sprinkle!!! sprinkle!!! sprinkle!!!

This thread was not a hoax. I met Liz on the August 17th Magic cruise. She was grateful to everyone for their concern and support. It overwhelmed the dear woman.
I called the DCL prior to leaving for the cruise just to thank them for their assistance. Why? Because I feel those directly responsible for upgrading Liz and her family deserve a thank you. We can wish all we want but DISNEY CMs fulfilled the dream of a distraught family.
Liz and her family have other problems they must deal with and she was secure enough in our meeting to share some of this with me. I cannot betray her confidence but rest assured that old saying is quite true - listen to someone else's problems and you will embrace your own.
Still not heeding my own advice, I called Liz earlier today and left a message on her answering machine. I advised her of everyone's desire to hear from her, even if but a few words, and perhaps she will be able to oblige us all. But if not, rest happy in the knowledge that your outcry of compassion truly helped a family in need.

To all of those that posted so much compassion, love, support and much more for what this family needed - someday the blessings shown will come back to each of you triple fold - Sometimes there is so much meanest in the world, that it does a heart good to see so much love and caring shown.
Buckroo - you did an awesome job on your post -
Thanks again for sharing and now we know that Liz and her family did have a wonderful time - a time to enbrace some magic in her profound life, even for a short time.
God Bless each and all
Always
