View Full Version : Sewing a purse strap

I have a purse that is the perfect size for me to use at Disney.

I've used it a couple of times but the strap isn't really long enough for me to comfortably use it as a cross body bag which is what I prefer.

So I'm thinking of sewing on a new strap. It won't need to be adjustable since I want it to be a cross body bag.

The current strap is made of some sort of nylon and since it is sewn around some rings that attach to the purse (one on each side) I was thinking I could replace it with a longer length on material easily. I'm not much of a sewer but I think I could do this.

I've never done this sort of thing before. Has anyone else tried it? Was it hard to do?

You shouldn't have a problem sewing this. :goodvibes

I would use buttonhole thread, which is stronger than regular sewing thread. Your local sewing supply store or craft store should have this. I would also use two lines of stiches, to make it strong. This is what I do on the purses that I make. I hate it when you come off of a ride with a broken strap! :rolleyes1

Good luck! I'll be around if you have more questions.

I picked up the buttonhole thread today along with the nylon webbing.

I just finished it up a few minutes ago and it came out exactly how I wanted it. I used your tip about the double line sewing.

It was so easy, I'm glad I did it instead of looking for a new bag!

No it's not hard, just try. You will find it is very easy.
