Thought I'd share something that i do....hopefully others will post some othre ideas...

I take a gallon size zip lock bag and put in it the items I would want during flight such as: gum, lip balm, book, headphones, soduku w/ pen, earplugs, etc.

I put the baggie in my back pack and when I board the plane I take the ziploc out and put it in the pocket in the seatback pocket. That way i don't have to keep going into/out of my backpack.

That is so simple, it's just brilliant.:thumbsup2 I am constantly digging in the bag under the seat in front of me. Someone wants gum (dig), someone wants chapstick (dig), where are the headphones (dig), nevermind they don't want the headphones (dig)...

Thanks for the tip!

I travel with kids, so I always take cups with lids for them (sippy cups! Even for the 6 year old!) so I don't have to worry about spilled drinks on the plane. The flight attendants are grateful, too.

Course, they have to be empty to pass through security nowadays...

Can't live without the wipies! Had a mother sit next to me on a plane and she wiped down every surface that her young child would touch. Thought that was a good idea instead of a mother who has to keep saying "don't touch that" over and over.

I keep a package of the antibacterial wipes in the "ziploc".. Its one of those packages that hold like #15 wipes in it. Right when we sit down I take them out and pass them to members in my party to wipe down arm rests, the latch for the tray, and the tray itself... sometimes the looks we get from other passengers is pretty funny:laughing:

A roll of papertowels.
Several quart size zip lock bags.

Those things are so handy. On the plane, DD10 spilled her drink. I had 1/2 a roll in my carryon that I grabbed and cleaned up the mess before it got worse. I stuck the used paper towels in the ziplock bag which I tossed later when the plane landed.

And the same thing in the car, one of the kids or DH spills their drink and it's easy cleanup.

I flew recently.. and in the sky mall magazine they had this organizer you can attach to the back of your tray it looked pretty cool (im one of those that digs for everything) I cannot however find it on the web site.. but I think it was only like 15 bucks.. I think something like this would be well worth it

Here are two from Magellens:

Slimline In-Flight Organizer Panel (http://www.magellans.com/store/In_Flight_Comfort___Entertainment___AccessoriesIF4 22?Args=)

Deluxe Seatback Organizer (http://www.magellans.com/store/In_Flight_Comfort___Entertainment___AccessoriesIF4 27?Args=)

I think you have to remove to put your tray table down, but i'm not sure.

I always take word search puzzle books. You can even get them for kids.

I have a big horking purse and a little shoulder bag purse. Soooo when I travel, I carry big purse and put little purse inside big purse. (Big purse is foldable and can be shoved into my laptop backpack if the need ever arose.) When I get to my airline seat, backpack goes above, big purse under my feet and little purse in the pocket! It works brilliantly for me and I have all my essentials close at hand.

Of course, if I know there will be massive walking involved and some of it may need to be speed walking, the big purse doesn't get to come out of my luggage to play. :sad1: My Kindle, wallet, Droid, and Blackberry can all be crammed, tightly, into the little purse, so I carry that and put everything else into the backpack. It's just easier to do the speedwalking thing and not be quite as rude when you're running up and down stairs and across terminals to get to your flight without a big purse.

May I expand on the ziploc bag idea for a moment. If you are traveling with young children who might need a diaper change while on flight, pack a ziploc with one diaper, wipe, disposable towel for him to lie on etc. I even found travel sized packets of Butt paste at Target which worked perfectly

If you have more than one child, mark each bag with their name or diaper size for easy access.

It is so much easier to grab the ziploc than to lug a big diaper back into the tiny bathroom,

I was a cloth diaper user so your tip makes sense... I always did that even for local trips/ errands. Each wet bag (just like a cloth ziplock) packed with a wipe, and diaper. Then I could toss the dirty right in the bag so no smells for me or anyone else.

Love the idea to put essentials in a baggie in the pocket. I kept some in my mini purse and pulled in out of the diaper bag and tucked it next to me. That sounds even better. Esp to have a bag for everyone.

Not just for the airplane but we save the straw cups from restaurants (Olive Garden, Applebee's, Red Robin, etc) I know fewer places use these now. Booo. Anyway, they are light and easy to carry, stackable, and contain juice in case of spills. And even big kids can use them. No worries about tossing one. I put my airplane juice in an empty water bottle.

Carry lollies for kids too young for gum. Keep the kids' Tylenol or Motrin handy in case their ears do hurt or other travel related event (I tend to get headaches when I fly) I've never needed the kids Tylenol but I remember a trip with a baby who was obviously uncomfortable and crying. Not a cranky-no-nap-bored-cry, an in-pain-cry.

If you take a carseat remember rubber bands to wrap up all the extra straps you won't need on the plane. Easier to carry that way. Stuff a light blanket or other small essentials under the seat padding to carry and board.
If the seat has a cupholder, use it to hold crayons (kept in a plastic cup with a lid- old abandoned sippy cups work well)

Early AM trip? Put your kid to bed in comfy clothes. My toddler wore a loose dress last year to bed and to travel. We brushed her hair and teeth after we checked in at the airport.

Know that strollers need to be folded at security.

Have your camera available for shots on the kids in travel.

:car:
Driving- practice packing your car so the front-seat passenger can reach everything. We use a basket with compartments. A cooler fits nicely in most cars on the back seat floor if the kids' feet don't reach anyway.

Bring out new toys or old toys that you've put away for a while.

Crayons melt in hot cars.

Window markers and clings are fun.

An old training potty might be useful along the highway :rolleyes1
