May 2011 trip - when to book?

We will be going to WDW 2011, staying at the Polynesian. Yay! When should we book? It looks like the past two years, Disney has offered 40% during our planned dates. How would I get this discount if I book before it comes out?

Well since we always get room only reservations, I am going to be booking our May 2011 trip when the new room rates come out which is usually in mid August some time.

How does that work out when Disney releases a discount?

When a discount comes out, you can go ahead and have them apply it to your reservation. If there is a package discount that is better than a room only discount, you can upgrade to a package (if you hadn't purchased your tickets yet).

We are going in Mid-May of this year (2010) and we booked in mid-December of last year (2009). I usually don't book until around 6 months out. Things always seem to change too much (both in my life and with airfare) if I book further out than that. :)
