Any good choices for a vegetarian daughter with the quick service dining plan? She's young (10), and very picky. I am thinking it may be better to purchase ala carte items for her, and use the credits for meals for the rest of us.

The only thing I have experience with here is that if any QS have a salad with chicken, you can ask to have the chicken left off. Don't know if she eats salads.

At 10 years old she is on the adult plan. Not sure what a la carte items you are considering purchasing for her that she couldn't get on the plan. If you are considering having her order from the child's menu you can pay OOP for those, but I don't recall seeing lots of vegetarian selections on the children's menus.

How picky is she? Will she eat veggie burgers? A lot of CS offer veggie burgers. As for places that I would recommend (I am also a vegetarian) for the MK Cosmic Ray's is a good choice. It has several options for vegetarians and LOTS of options for those who are not vegetarians. Veggie burgers, a veggie wrap and a salad are offered. Plus they have a wonderful toppings bar. Columbia Harbour House is also recommended often. While they do have a vegetarian sandwich, unless your daughter likes hummus - she might not like it. They do offer a vegetarian chili also. My husband and son (non-veggies) like the fish and chicken here.

Epcot is also good for vegetarian choices.. Sunshine Seasons has several vegetarian options including a salad, a tofu noddle bowl and grilled veggie sandwich. I tried both the sandwich and noodle bowl on my recent visit and loved the noodle bowl. If she doesn't like tofu, you can order it without. The sandwich also had some sort of hummus like spread. You could probably get it without. Liberty Inn in the American pavilion offers a veggie burger. And unless she is okay with chicken broth or fish broth you might want to steer clear of Lotus Blossom in China. Others might recommend Tangierine Cafe in Morocco.. I can't recommend this place myself. I couldn't stand my veggie platter. I only liked the olives. The food for me is very bland and unless she likes that sort of food, I doubt a picky kid would eat it.

I can't offer any suggestions for DHS, because we usually skip that park. But I know you can find menus to check out. The AK has some decent options. If your daughter likes fruit, Flame Tree BBQ offers a wonderful fruit and yogurt option. It was more than enough food for me. Pizzafari has a cheese pizza and Restaurantosaurus has a veggie burger.

Resort CS usually offers at least one option for vegetarians. So far the best CS for resorts for me have been Capt. Cook's at the Poly and the Mara at the AKL. Capt. Cook's has a very tasty cheese flatbread and a grown up grilled cheese sandwich, but unless she likes blue cheese - she might not like that one. The Mara had a very tasty and different veggie burger and they also offer flatbread and I believe they have a falafel pita.

Anyway! I hope this helps some! Have a wonderful trip! :goodvibes

I will look into the options given, and since I asked, I also found some other threads that look good. I will be spending some time scouting menus with prices. The main problem is she doesn't like vegetables, so a more accurate description would be a non-meat eater.

I'm confused....then what does she eat? I have never heard of a non-vegetable eating vegetarian! :confused3

I think on QS plan you might be pretty much limited to cheese pizza, but you could of course use her credits to buy her a pizza anyplace that sells one. It just may be that it ends up you have to go two places - one to get her meal and someplace else to get meals for the rest of the family.

There was a thread here about such a person not too long ago--I think in that case it was the poster's son's girlfriend, who was 20-ish. All she would eat, basically, were carbs, dairy, and chocolate. I felt bad for that poster, because she'd cooked a huge fancy vegetarian meal to welcome the girl into her home, and the girl wouldn't eat it--that's how she found out the girl doesn't eat vegetables.

Anyway to answer the OP's question, no, there is not a huge selection of carbs-and-dairy-only QS meals! Veggie burger, mac and cheese, and cheese pizza is probably it. There are a ton of salads and vegetarian wraps (I'd been going to recommend Fairfax Fare plus Picnic in the Park), but if she doesn't eat veggies then that won't do any good. Disney is a great place to be a vegetarian if you're a vegetarian who likes to eat a wide variety of different things and isn't picky.

Honestly, you might fare better with letting her use up the snack credits for side salads, fruits, fries, pasta, hot pretzels etc, then trying to find non-vegetable based vegetarian meals.

However here are some meal choices:

AK- Flame Tree BBQ has a fruit platter with yogurt dip
HS- ABC Commissary had an Asian salad (may have changed)
EP- Sunshine Seasons will give her the most choices
MK- Columbia Harbor House vegetarian chili with fries on the side is a good choice (if she'll eat chili)

There are some good articles on vegetarian dining at WDW on Allears.net

Agree.

And as a vegetarian.... I would not do the QS plan and I DO eat vegetables!! :thumbsup2

I'm not trying to jump on my soapbox...okay, maybe I am.
This is a little off topic but I just wanted to suggest to the OP that if you're kiddo isn't eating very many veggies or very much protein, you might want to talk to a nutritionist/doctor about her taking a multi-vitamin. Vegetarianism can be a very healthy lifestyle but if you don't eat enough protein (eggs, tofu, tempah, quinoa, etc) you can end up with a Vitamin B12 deficiency. And of course we all know how important fruits and veggies are.

Good luck at WDW! I know they serve Gardenburgers there so maybe buy some and try them out at home? See how she likes them? You can also get Uncrustable PB&J on the kids menu. Maybe now would be a good time to start trying to broaden her horizons at home by including tofu or vegetables in her meals. It might make Disney eating easier.

How can I find out if the yogurt at Flame Tree BBQ is actually vegetarian (no gelatin)?

I think they keep a list of ingredients for people to look at, but I'm not positive. I actually gave my yogurt to my son.

OP, I can empathize with you. Check out the menus on www.allearsnet.com. There are options if you look closely. It looks like WPE in DTD has noodles. There are a couple that have grilled cheese (on kids menu), Hurricane Hannah's at YC for one. Many have the PB&J uncrustables. Then, of course, you have the pizza. Some places will let you get a kid's meal even though she is on the adult plan. This is what we do with my picky DD. Village Haus had Mac/Cheese on the menu. The American pavilion QS has grilled cheese on the kids menu as well. You'll just have to go restaurant by restaurant.

I assume it's not, because the yogurt sold in the resort QS restaurants is not. The resorts just have strawberry Yoplait.

Being not a huge meat eater myself (I've been vegetarian on and off for many years), I've tried the Lighthouse sandwich at Columbia Harbour House. I've also had a few veggie burgers. Sunshine Seasons have some great selections as well. I'm sure you can find some stuff she will eat. Just look at the menus on allears.net. That will be very helpful. :)

You all have given so many helpful suggestions- and to those concerned about my daughter's eating habits, we are, too. I cook vegetables, beans, and healthy vegetarian food. The opportunity to eat is there, the willingness is not. We have bought some of the fake meat products for her to try, so hopefully she will start expanding her horizons.

I think the plan for now is use snack credits for her, and use the counterservice credits for my son and I. I also need to call and change our reservations. Thanks to this board, I knew to call and see if we had the quick service pin available. We did, but the reservation agent just put in the upgrade for regular dining, which does not seem like it would work very well for us. My picky daughter is definitely not going to eat $20 extra of food every day, and with regular dining you get fewer snack credits.

Has anyone else had problems with reservations upgrading (and charging for the upgrade) the pin offer to regular dining? I was not happy with the agent we had.

Hello, I was looking for more vegetarian/vegan dining advice for myself on our upcoming trip and came across your thread.

I'm in a bit of a different position as I am definitely a vegetable lover, but as far as non-meat food, you are probably going to be in the best position eating at Table Service variety and quality-wise. (I just thought I'd throw it out there since you said you currently have the basic dining plan.. I think?)

Most of the table service restaurants have at least one vegetarian option, and many will make custom dishes based on what you will and will not eat. It's just important to make sure it's noted on your dining reservations.

I don't think someone would be able to eat on Snack credits, although if you did go with QSDP, I'm sure you could find something for her to eat, maybe OOP, and like another poster said, maybe just at a different place than you get your food.

Hope I didn't misunderstand the Basic plan comment, nothing comes off worse than someone inserting their opinions off topic! Whatever you decide, I'm sure everyone will find something to eat and you'll be thrilled, you'll be in Disney World after all! :) Good luck!

That is so wonderful, Ginger! I hope I didn't sound rude when I hopped on my soap box there for a minute about Vitamin B12; my boyfriend has had to be very careful about this in his transition to vegetarianism. It is so wonderful that you are making vegetarian meals and supporting her decision; my boyfriend is 21 and his parents are still not so accepting!! I wish you the best of luck at WDW. I'm sure your daughter will start to broaden her horizons as time goes on!

I just wanted you to be aware that if you call the DDP and tell them that your daughter has restrictions (whatever they may be) they will try to accommodate. My SIL went to WDW back in 06' and my nephew has Celiac Disease and they accommodated him. I honestly think that they know there are people from all over the world in WDW and that they try to have a variety for everyone.

I have found that being 'Vegetarian' is actually a 'broad' spectrum some eat chicken, some eat fish, VEGAN is totally plant based with no animal products so depending on what type of vegetarian she is there should be a large selection available. You also could call your restaurants or look at the online menu's and see what alternatives there are for your daughter ahead of time. ;)
