I arrived at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas for an 8-night stay at Kidani Village. I have a 1-BR Savanna view room on the 5th floor of the Timon section (75xx). I walk of out my room and walk a few steps to the right, and I can take the elevator down to the Lobby or to Sanna. I turn left and walk a few steps and I can take the elevator down to my car. It’s a pretty convenient location. I like having the car out of the sun and weather.
I arrived in the lobby at 12:15pm and my room was ready. I was glad since I was tired from the 8.5 hour drive. I spent most of the day relaxing in my room, or walking around the resort.
A couple of weeks ago, my wife decided she didn’t want to spend the entire 8 nights here, but is only coming down for 2-3 nights. She says that 34 nights at Walt Disney World over just 6 months is too much for her. Pretty strange comment, eh? :confused3 Go figure!
I’m just glad to be here. I’ve been working 60 hours a week for the past few months, so I’m grateful I get to take vacations.
I had a nice meal at Boma tonight, with dinner plans for Jiko, Raglun Road, Koouzzina, Flying Fish Café, Kona Café, Citricos and bluezoo. Of course, I made these plans thinking there will be two of us, so I’m not sure if I’ll keep them all.
I’ve not had any time to play with my Nikon D5000 DSLR camera since the last trip, but I did buy a new lens and I’m hoping to try to take some dark ride pictures on this trip.
Oh well, I have absolutely no plans other than the ADRs, so I’ll just play it by ear.
Here are a couple of guys outside my balcony

You have been keeping a low profile lately. The 60 hours per week will do it.
Enjoy your stay at Kidani. We certainly did :) Have a great time and looking forward to your report and wonderful pictures.

Mike,
I just got back from Kidani today and I think you are right above my room as we had a fourth floor room and the view of the giraffes eating the leaves off that tree was right in front of my balcony as well. So glad you are posting a live TR as I do miss it already. We really enjoyed Kidani and being a VWL owner I was afraid I would miss the WL too much. While I did miss it just a bit, I loved sitting on the balcony overlooking the savanna each afternoon - what a treat. I will book Kidani again sometime. Enjoy the rest of your vacation and I am looking forward to your TR.

Great pictures Mike!
Have you had any trouble parking? We were there in Aug and were able to park ourselves the first few nights. After that the last section of the building opened and it became impossible to park. I was just curious if it got any better.

While parking under the building is very convenient, it does seem a pit packed, like there aren't enought parking slots for all the rooms.

popcorn:: I sure hope that weather holds until the last week of March! It's been the winter from you know where up here and this is our first ever spring break trip so I am COUNTING ON some sunshine & 78-80 degrees!! We're going down LATE on the 26th and I've been worried about the cooler weather down there this winter. (I'm so anxious I'm ready to start packing but can't until I can get an accurate weather forecast.)
Our plane lands around 10:25 pm that night and I expect it will be close to midnight by the time we check-in. Really nice to see the nighttime pictures so I know what to expect.:thumbsup2 Afraid we'll be so tired we'll be too out of it to notice how beautiful it is. This will be our first stay at Kidani and am anxious to compare it to Jambo. I really think my only concern is that we might miss the Mara...

Hurray!! Mike is back with a live report  Always enjoy your TR's and being able live it through you. I almost can understand your wife's feelings although I've only been to WDW 3 times (1997, twice 2008) - after my 4th day of being solo on the last trip, I "almost" thought I was done with WDW for awhile (maybe because I took 2 trips in one year) but then my DD & DGS joined me for the last 4 days and I got to see it through their eyes and that made it all fresh and new for me again.
I hope you have a great time being solo for a few days and that you both have a greater time when your wife joins you. Great pics of your room view!

Thank you so much for the beautiful pictures. My DH wants to move up our summer trip and your pictures just made him sigh. Guess I'll be making that call in the morning to see what I can get sooner.
I sort of know how Mrs. DVC Mike feels. I made 3 trips in 7 months to visit my DD during her college program. And then my DH asked to go this summer instead of going to Honolulu, wasn't keen on it until seeing your pictures.
Thanks again for taking us along.

Just echoing everyones thanks Mike!! Your pics brighten up what has been a very long and cold winter and make me excited for our upcoming BCV stay. I can't wait to plant some color at home in our garden!! If you get a chance, we really enjoyed getting to chat with some of the CM's from Africa at Kidani at night that would be at the Savana lookout and in the library area. They had such interesting stories from their home countries.

I ate at the Chef's table last night at Jiko and had a wonderful meal there. I've been to Jiko about 8 times in the past 3 years and always enjoy the food. Instead of getting the Filet Mignon with mac and cheese, I got the Salmon and it was so flavorful.
Watching the chefs prepare appetizers right in front of me was interesting. It was similar to eating at the Chef's table at Napa Rose in Disneyland.

Thanks for the dark ride pics of Pirates. That answers some of my questions. Nice camera. What were the settings you used for those pics? And I'm guessing you did not use a flash, right?

We loved Sanaa. We thought that since it's a bit out of the way, and Boma is so popular, that it would be easy to get into. Dh and I made it there one night about an hour before closing and still had to wait 45m to get in as a walk up. They were telling people that Boma would have an even longer wait. It was well worth the wait, and it was nice to be able to sit around the fire pit while waiting for our table.

OK, today I did something different. I decided to vist - not a park or a DVC resort - but the Disney resorts I have never stayed at. I apologize in advance to those of you who may love any of these resorts.
I first visited Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort (a Moderate resort). Wow, if you think SSR is huge, take a look at CBR! There are 2,112 rooms spread over 200 acres.
The exterior of the buildings just didn't do it for me, and inside is just like any Best Western motel room.

I next visited Disney's Pop Century Resort (a Value resort). This is another large resort with 2,880 rooms spread over 177 acres.
The exterior of the buildings is like a Motel 6, except they are boldly decorated - in a decor that just doesn't appeal to me.

I finally went to Disney's Coronado Springs Resort (a Moderate resort). Even though this is a moderate resort, it seems a bit more upscale than CBR (or Port Orleans), probably since it's also a convention hotel.
This place is also big - 1,877 rooms spread across 125 acres. However, it's actually a quite pretty place.

:lmao: I"m laughing because in 2007, we stayed one night at ASMU to see if we wanted to book it for our big family trip because we couldn't afford 3 rooms at the Poly for a week. We had taken the DVC tour at DLR and visited the SSR models. Let's just say, my DH made the DVC appointment to sign papers as soon as we returned to SoCal. He is spoiled by his DVC. And as a teacher, I have little tolerance for children running amok when I'm on vacation.
I've also stayed at POP with my DD for one night because I didn't want to waste points on just sleeping and she got a CM discount. Thank goodness, it was cold and no one was in the pool.

We've never done the stay at the values. I just couldbn't handle the smallest rooms on property for a week. We have stayed at POR and CBR. We liked them just fine. We did CBR for our honeymoon, so it was nice for seclusion in some places. We never visited the main pool, always the quiet pools.
We bought DVC after our first deluxe stay. We swore we never go moderate again after that stay at WL. We just loved it so much.
As always, the photos are excellent.
We really enjoyed Sanaa on our last visit. We have an ADR for it again this summer. However, we have discovered that the online system doesn't always let you book it online. We had to call Disney Dining to make our reservation.

I definitely have to agree with you on your comments on these resorts, Mike. I've never stayed anywhere else than BWV and I'm not a resort snob by any means but I'm considering adding 2 nights at the end of our trip & hoping to get a good rate at CSR (this is the only one I would consider over the values and other mods.) What spoils me is that I can rent points and stay at a DVC resort for less than a mod (at least Sun-Thurs stays). Great pics (as always)! The ones of CSR definitely sold me to try staying there.

Mike, do you remember approximately what time you took these pics? The pool area seems empty. We are planning a few pool mornings and am hoping we don't have to get up at the crack of dawn to get chairs closeby the pool. It will be first week of June though so assume AKV pool area will be alot more crowded then this week.

Never thought I'd say it but sign me up for the resort snob group too. We stayed there one night last Dec and I couldn't get us out of there and over to VWL fast enough. I will never intentionally return to any of the Values again.
On the positive side my one night stay at ASM reminded me of just how good we have it in DVC, even when staying at our lesser favorite of the resorts the grounds, lobbies and staff are all wonderful. ;)
Great pics Mike! They're beautifully composed and look to be extraordinarily clear.
I have a challenge for you if you're up for it: Find and photograph the Red River Hogs & Okapi. I treked over that way three times during this last stay and never even got a glimpse of them.

Very funny comments regarding the mega resorts. We have stayed at the values many times when our kids were very small. Once we were able to buy DVC, we haven't been back. I prefer to Priceline a room offsite if I need to stay somewhere besides my DVC. I can't see paying over $100 for a room at a value resort. That's just crazy, IMO. There are some great hotels in Orlando you could stay in for that much money.
Bottom line: I'm glad I have my DVC!
(either that, or I'm just spoiled).

If we can't spoil ourselves...;)
Great trip report and the pictures are FANTASTIC!!!

This was All Star Sports and this is where I was staying with my son in 2005. Was our first time On Property and was what I could afford at the time (or so I thought;)). Bored one morning so I took the DVC tour of SSR and signed on the SPOT!! Now, would I stay there again? Not at my age:hippie: and not as long as I have points to bank or borrow...
Our first trip was at this resort as well. We have good memories from that pool playing with our kids waiting for Goofy to squirt some water our way. We are blessed to be a part of DVC now but this All Star resort was a great place to stay when our kids were little and could fit in a small room. I will have to admit that we love the extra space we have now in our villas.
Mike, great pics so far - thanks for sharing!
If you have a moment and the inclination when passing by the Resort Airline Check-in desk, would you mind stopping and asking if they will be adding service for Southwest baggage check soon, and if so, when?
(Explanation - there's a report of a schedule for expanding to all resorts in March and April and a report that Teena, the new greeter at BC reported that SW bags will be included as of tomorrow.)
Danke :)

:thumbsup2 You said it all. Spoiled or not, I am SO glad DH started buying me birthday points 10 years ago. And Christmas points, and Anniversary points... especially after reading all the threads lately about the sports and cheerleading groups at the values. Crazy stories! :scared1: Love the more relaxed rhythm of our trips, knowing we will be back year after year. DVC is the best! Enjoy the rest of your trip, Mike. Love the pix! Great job Mike. Sounds like your wife and my wife would get along well. Sometimes she feels that there can be too much Disney.
Our first family on site visit was to the CBR. We enjoyed it, but after staying at the WL in 1994, I knew that we needed to stay at a deluxe. I like to spend more time at the resort than the parks, so having a nice place to hang out at was important. Looking forward to more daily reports.

I then went to Disney's All-Star Resorts (a Value resort). Again, another huge resort with 5,740 rooms spread over 246 acres.
I'm sorry, but this place just looks worse to me than Pop Century.
Verdict: I'll be dead before I ever stay here.

More beautiful pictures Mike - thank you. :thumbsup2
OK, today I did something different. I decided to vist - not a park or a DVC resort - but the Disney resorts I have never stayed at. I apologize in advance to those of you who may love any of these resorts.
:lmao: I love it!
Just remember that this was Disney's first attempt at creating a Value resort on property way back when.
I then went to Disney's All-Star Resorts (a Value resort). Again, another huge resort with 5,740 rooms spread over 246 acres.
I'm sorry, but this place just looks worse to me than Pop Century.
Then came these. I've stayed at both POP & All-Stars when that's all we could do. I don't care for them, but do appreciate what Disney was trying to do in creating them as the Value category. At the time though, I wished they hadn't bumped the prices on CBR, POR & CSR to create the Moderate category. Though I'd hate to see what they came up with if they tried to create a lower level of value resort...
Bottom line: I'm glad I have my DVC!
(either that, or I'm just spoiled).
:goodvibes
Oh well, many people swear by them, they just don't happen to be us. Like you, I've happy we have our DVC too. :)

Mike, I just love your TRs and the photos. I always look forward to viewing your photos and wishing I were there.
Thanks for the photos of some of the other Disney resorts, I guess I'm spoiled as well, I would stay off property before staying at one of those resorts you posted. We're planning on bring some of our friends to Disney next year and don't have enough pts for two rooms, from looking at your photos I've decided to stay at one of the Marriotts (also own Marriott TS) instead of staying at one of those resorts you posted.
Hope you have a wonderful day.

I guess I am spoiled or a resort snob but I have never stayed at the value resorts and do not plan to ever, My oldest son and DGF stayed at All Star Sports once and they came back saying never again :rotfl2: Once I tried deluxe resorts there was no going back for me , with the exception of CRS I booked there the day the resort opened, just to be one of the "first" to check it out.

Mike, just got home from a 3/5-8 trip at Jambo in the DVC villas. Friends and I went to cheer on runner friends and were at the finish line. We were walking around each other on Sunday at Epcot, after looking at your pictures! I have many of the same ones. LOL The weather was spectacular!
I didn't know there was a baby giraffe at Kidani's savanna! I should have come over there to take some pictures. I am enjoying extending my trip by checking out your photos.

The weather has taken a turn and the rest of the week looks very cloudy with rain off and on. Little did I know when I visited the Epcot Flower & Garden Festival that it would be the best day of the week.
I went over to the Epcot resort area and wandered around Crescent Lake, starting at Beach Club.
The skies were a dull gray and it was a bit drab and dreary looking outside; however, I am not at work but at Disney! I do miss the crystal clear blue skies of Sunday.

It started to drizzle, so I hopped inside the Boardwalk Bakery to grab a latte and a muffin, and I watched it drizzle under an awning.
After it slowed down, I covered my camera with my baseball cap and walked back to Beach Club.
I spoke with one of the lifeguards at Stormalong Bay. He said Disney is going to announce a 5th theme park at WDW. I forget, who is more reliable - the lifeguards or the bus drivers? I can't remember.

I must admit that staying in Deluxe Resorts and then joining DVC has made me a bit of a resort snob as well. I would, however, rather stay in a value resort than not be able to go! I wouldn't spend near as much time at the resort as I do at the DVC resorts but I would definitely still go!

Here I am in Walt Disney World, with four theme parks, two water parks, Downtown Disney, Universal Forida, and Seaworld all nearby.
So, what did I do this afternoon?
I read a novel. It was very relaxing...
I'm having dinner at Sanaa tonight. I called up Disney Dining and was able to find a slot.
I cancelled my other reservation at Kouzzina. I'd rather just walk down the hall tonight and have dinner.

I next visited Disney's Pop Century Resort (a Value resort). This is another large resort with 2,880 rooms spread over 177 acres.
The exterior of the buildings is like a Motel 6, except they are boldly decorated - in a decor that just doesn't appeal to me.

What a difference a day makes - or two. Those skies are definitely more dreary than Sunday. I'd still take a day at WDW! I'm happy they were able to get you into Sanaa. A walk down the hall will be much nicer than a trip to another resort, especially with the threat of rain.
Enjoy!

I'm having dinner at Sanaa tonight.
Last time, I had lunch at Sanaa and had the slow-cooked Shrimp with Green Curry Sauce and the Beef Short Ribs. I also had the Indian-Style Bread Service.
Tonight, I went with Today's Sustainable Fish (Artic Char) with Shrimp and Scallops served with seasonable vegetables in a light Curry Broth. I drank the Tusker Premium Lager.
I enjoyed both meals.
Ha! I wonder if I'm Bizarro-Mike? I'm also a Mike... also a DVC member... also staying at Kidani Village on the 5th floor of Timon section (75xx). But I'm in a 1BR Standard view. So if I walk out of my room and walk a few steps left I can take the elevator to the lobby, or I can turn right and walk a few steps and get the elevator down to my car. :P
Great trip report.

So, has this ever happened to you?
I entered Toy Story Mania with my Fastpass in hand, and when I got to where the line merges with the regular line, the girl there just smiled at me and let me keep my Fastpass.
Sweet! After my first try, I went and rode the ride again.
My best for those two rides was only 177,000 -- not a lot, but OK considering I only do TSM 2-3 times a year.

Nice bit of luck keeping the FP! I have walked past the first set of CMs a number of times thinking 'wow they forgot to take my FP' only to remember it's the CMs at the end of the line that gather them up! Oh well....enjoying your TR and hope you continue to have a great trip.

I haven't had it happen there, but have had it happen a few times when my daughter had injured her knee, and we had her in a wheelchair. We went up to Star Tours at our appointed fastpass time, and they brought us around to another entrance. Got us on, but never took the FP'es from us. After the ride, we were in a hurry so make a reservation, so we dropped some pixie dust on another family that was telling their daughters they couldn't ride since they only had 1/2 hour to get to something and the line was too long. Gave them the fastpasses and they were able to do both!

HS - one of my favorite parks! I am so glad the weather improved considering how gloomy it was yesterday :woohoo: Beautiful pics - great pick-me-up when I'm at work - thanks!
Have you ever visited Fantasmic by yourself? The only time I went was by myself back in Dec 2008 and I got a great seat third row up right in the middle. I almost decided to do the dinner pkge deal but didn't think I would like sitting over to the right. I videotaped it and really enjoyed it!
Do you find yourself doing things alot differently than when your wife is along or just a little different?

thanks for all the great pics and information. I enjoyed your tour of the other resorts. I've only stayed at CSR before. I know my DH would not enjoy the others. He is the one who pushed us joining DVC :hug: that's why he is my favorite.
I enjoy playing bus lotto also, esp when I'm solo.

Thanks for the great TR once again. Your pictures are fantastic. I will be in the market for a new camera soon and I will definitely check out the Nikon D5000.

I'm off to a park this morning. I'm not sure which one. Maybe I'll play bus lotto and take the first bus that shows up.

This is a great idea! I do this too except a little different. I go to the valet and the first car that pulls up I take the car and head to a park. It's a different car everytime!! What fun!!
I'm going to try the bus next time although they are bigger so it'll be a little more of a challenge going around turns.

Apparently, DVC is leaving flyers in rooms saying "you're invited to check out the view from the top".
They have this every day in the Top of the World Lounge. They show you a model room as well, and even a GV.

And for checking it out they are giving out fast passes?
I stayed at BLT one night in December after our cruise so I've been to the TOTWL and it is very nice. But I'd like to see a GV if the visit doesn't take hours.

I woke up Thursday morning to see it very overcast, with rain forecast for later in the day. In fact, there were a few sprinkles before I left the room.
So, I left my camera behind, not wanting to get my DSLR wet. Sorry, no pictures will be posted today!
I spent the morning at the Magic Kingdom, and had a blast. I came back to the room where I ate, and then I went back to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It really started raining around 2:30 pm and just got worse as the day went on. I decided to spend much of the afternoon inside, going to two shows I’ve never seen before: Beauty and the Beast and The American Idol Experience. Not only was it dry inside, but both shows were pretty good.
Since I had an umbrella, I left the park mostly dry, except my tennis shoes were soaked. I hope they dry out before tomorrow morning.
Most of the really bad weather (hail, tornadoes and the really heavy rain) was a bit north of WDW.
Tomorrow, more rain is expected. I’m planning on going to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, as I can still hit the safari, as well as two more shows – Festival of the Lion King and Finding Nemo – The Musical.
The weather should get better by Saturday, my last day here before I drive back home on Sunday morning.

Glad you still had a great day despite the weather. Hopefully you'll get to enjoy more sunshine before your vacation is over. And if those shoes don't dry out - you can always put them in the dryer on a low setting. They'll make quite a racket, but at least you'll get them dry! :thumbsup2

I have two more days at WDW - Friday and Saturday - and then I hit the rode on Sunday.
The company I work for has this unreasonable expectation that I be at work on Monday. :confused3

Sorry I am not posting this until this morning but if you stuff your tennis shoes with newspaper it will absorb the water and they will be pretty dry by morning. Just a handy tip I've learned on the boards!:thumbsup2
Enjoy your last couple of days!

Hi Mike, your pictures are nothing short of outstanding. I have a quick camera question. I considered buying the D5000 but went with the new Canon 12.1 MP for our soon-to-be Flower Festival trip. Just judging by cost, yours must be the superior camera, but will I be giving up a lot of picture quality especially if I stick with automatic settings?

In photography, there are a dozen or more possible combinations of shutter speed, aperture and ISO that will all produce "acceptable" exposures. When you leave you camera on full automatic, you're letting it pick one of those settings - but the camera doesn't know if you're trying to shoot a portrait of somone or a landscape setting, and won't choose the "best" exposure for what you're trying to create.

Well, another rainy day here at Walt Disney World… so no pictures today, since I’m not getting my DSLR camera wet.
I drove over to Disney’s Animal Kingdom this morning, and drove through the gates right at 9am. I was surprised to find maybe 20 cars in the lot – where is everyone? Are they afraid of the rain?
I got to the front gates and there were only a few people there. I went over to Kilimanjaro Safaris, where I just walked right on.
I’ve never done the safari in the rain before. Boy, are all the animals up and active! I saw rhinos sparring and giraffes running and elephants, oh my! If you’ve never done the safari during a good rain storm, give it a try.
Most of the rides were all walk-ons with no wait – only Expedition Everest had a 5-min wait.
I finally did The Festival of The Lion King, which was pretty good.
I arrived back in my room, my sneakers once again soaked wet. It was, however, very much fun!
The rain should be gone by tomorrow. If it’s clear blue skies, I’m going to the MK. If it’s overcast, I’m headed over to BLT to check out the tour.

The rain must explain it.
My favorite safari experience happened immediately after a rain (It was thundering while I was in line). Male elephant swaying back and forth (seemingly in sync to the music played by the safari "radio"), Baby giraffe nursing in the middle of the road (just had to wait, safari drivers are not allowed to make animals move), Saw a hippo yawn (huge mouth!) Lions moving, white rino walking next to our vehicle..

Great report and pics!! I am amazed at those pics of MK with no one in them. We had a day in January when it was sleeting that we had the park to ourselves and even though it was cold it was heavenly!
We took a last minute trip on Tues to Disney bc of 10$ airfare we got from Jet Blue..it was so nice to go see the flowers at Epcot. Have a safe drive home.:)

Again, many thanks for taking us along on your vacation! I love the pics with no crowds but I bet you liked the park with no crowds even better! :rotfl: It doesn't take long and before you know it they seem to come out of the woodwork (like little ants :rotfl2:). I loved the pic as you were entering MK - the two little boys on the left running - how cute!

Just the Angus Cheeseburger. It was actually pretty good, much better than most theme park burgers.

Great Pictures... Great Job...
Questions for you. You did a good job on the Pirates shots.. What was your ISO? And what setting did you use. Those are hard to do. I have tried before. With it going so fast, and needing to slow down the setting to let in the light. You must have had the ISO up very high. Do you mind telling me what your settings were? I shoot only Canon. I have the Canon Mark 3 and the 5D. but I would love it if you would let me know.
I haven't been to WDW since 2005. Just looking at your pictures, I want to go back. We own at SSR and have only stayed there once. Since then we have used all of our points at DL. Now that we have Grand Villas, we love it, but I want to go back to WDW so BAD..... Thanks so much for sharing the beautiful pictures.
I know why your wife doesn't like to go with you the whole time. You are a camera freak like I am. My DH HATES it when I have to take so many pictures. He gets so bored. But I LOVE it, and I can see you do too, and you are so good at it. Thanks for sharing with all of us.

I used the Aperture Priority setting on my Nikon D5000 and selecetd an aperture of f/1.8 and an ISO of 1600. In most cases, that gave me a shutter setting of 1/60, which was just enough to get a fairly clear picture (and the 35mm f/1.8 lens does not have VR/IS).
I went back at the end of the week and bumped the ISO up to 3200 and got pretty much the same results.

. . . . . I'm back home, ready to go back to work bright and early tomorrow morning. :(
Sorry . . . . but I too have found that the inconvenience of work must preclude a WDW adventure . .

I forgot that you were going to be there the same time that we were. We arrived on 3/6 and left on 3/13. Unfortunately, our last two days were the two horrendous rainy ones and we watched from the Orlando airport what a gorgeous day Saturday was while we waited to fly up to Newark. Unfortunately, we wound up sitting in the airport for 9 hours before our flight was allowed to take off.
I love your photos -- it's nice to see it the way I saw it since I was there at the exact same time.

So you didn't see any difference in 1600 and 3200? Wow, surprising.. But seriously they were good. That is very hard to do in the dark. I find my camera has a hard time focusing, because it is so dark. So I will try the different ISO. So you shot at 1.8 Pretty good. I do have 3 lens that will open that much.
thanks for the tips... Great Pictures, I LOVE your reviews... I just can't believe how fast you get them up. Are you shooting in RAW?

No, I don't have the patience to shoot in RAW and then perform post-processing of each photo in PhotoShop. I just shoot JPEG and never do any post-processing.
I could probably get much better photos if I shot RAW, but like I said - I just don't have the time.
