Camping but not.

I know there was some discussion some time back about renting campsites but not staying at them but can't remember the details so here's my situation.

We are family of 8 coming to the world at the end of July. We have always stayed in the cabins before (last time we stayed our youngest was under 3 and the DS's GF wasn't along). We debated getting 2 cabins but the cost is pretty high so I am wondering about renting one cabin and one campsite. No one is sure they want to stay in a tent in the July heat so we would probably make use of some air mattrresses in the cabin. I am very aware that space will be tight but we think we can do it. We are just concerned about policies with not staying at the tent site. We will put up a tent and put sleeping bags in it and probably even store some of our suitcases in the tent, we just won't sleep there. My son even says if the heat isn't too bad, he MAY sleep there.

I know all of the other options and if it were just up to me, I would probably rent points from a DVC member and get a 2 br villa at DAK but the kids REALLY like the campground and are adamant about staying there again. So..... will we run into problems with this plan?

You will be over occupancy at the cabins with eight persons. It unfortunately won't make it 'legal' to go over occupancy in the cabin because you rented an extra site and keep your 'stuff' there.:sad1:

It would be a shame for the person who needed that site and couldn't get it because it was booked by someone who wasn't using it.

We stayed in the cabins last year and it was tight 4 because of the pack n play. You are not going to be able to move at all with 8. plus 8 people to 1 bathroom?:scared1: I would just get 2 rooms at a value and camp another time

It is the fire marshall who gives limits to the cabins and all hotel rooms, over "stuffing" is a big no no.

We have done the 2 rooms at a Value resort, the extra bathroom will be appreciated. :thumbsup2

I kinda have to agree with a lot of what's being said here: I'm a pretty big "play by the rules, they exist for a reason" kinda guy so the notion of stuffing eight people into a cabin just rubs me the wrong way. As for getting a camp site and not using it... well, I guess if you're paying for it, that's sort of your option. Frankly, if I was stuffed into one of those cabins with seven other people, I'd opt for the tent... heat or no heat!

You'll be too crowded in a cabin with 8 people and it will be too hot for a tent. I have to say that I wouldn't get a campsite you aren't going to use - an actual person camping may need that site and there's only one disney resort for us campers. I'd check out your other options because I'm a "play by the rules" type of person.

I know this wasn't your question, but if I were in your position, I would consider renting a camper and pitching the tent on the tent pad behind the camper. The tent provides a place to store things and possibly extra sleeping space if the temps aren't too miserable. You would also have access to the comfort station. It still won't be cheap because you have to rent the camper and the campsite.

Shari, I think the idea of renting a camper is a great one!

Tina is a diser here that rents her camper to folks and I've always read good things about her. :)

They bring everything to the site and set it up for you and take it all away when you're done. What could be easier than that! Her site says the camper can fit up to a tight 9 but sleeps 6-8 comfortably. Even renting the campsite and the camper, it will probably be cheaper than a cabin or renting 2 rooms.

Everyone gets to be comfortable, no rules are broken, the kids are happy, and best of all- you get to stay at The Fort!

ETA: Staying in one of the campsites would be great for bathrooms too. You would have the camper bathroom plus the comfort station bathrooms (which are very nice). It would make it much easier and quicker to take showers when 5-6 people can shower at a time.

I can't believe you've stayed at the cabins before and are actually considering trying to get 8 people into one. We've stayed there with 6 (2 of whom were under 3) and we felt packed in like sardines.
Why don't you look into renting the big RV that someone here rents? That sleeps 8 easily, doesn't it? Probably cheaper than the cabin, too.

For their 50 bucks, Disney will allow them to wedge in two extra people into the cabins as long as they bring their own air mattresses and sleep on the floor. For another 25 bucks they can sleep 4 more out on the deck. You wil also be allowed to use a vacant barbeque grill and your kids can loop on their bikes, but only if you are a non smoker.

According to my most recent pricing from Tina, renting her RV would save you $975 over a cabin stay, assuming you are in a Premium site and stayed for 2 weeks at the end of July (or $1,228 in a full, or $1,144 in a preferred). Even with the premium site, that's enough savings to rent 2 (count 'em TWO!) golf carts from Kenny and still pocket some cash!

Thanks to those of you that tried to be helpful with suggestions. Some of the rest of you take too much delight in sniping at people.

When we travel, we often put a air mattress on the floor so sons don't sleep w/daughters(or son with girlfriend) and my youngest still sleeps with mom & dad(no comments please, it is what works for us) so we rarely fit the proper configuration for hotel rooms but we pay for what we would fit in. In other words, we always pay for the number of people we have, we just don't always sleep 2 per bed. If we switched to 2 connecting rooms at All Stars, we would still be 5 in one room and 3 in the other. I'm not sure why this is that much different. :confused3

We are still exploring the possibility of rigging up some air-conditioning for the tent and having 2 of the boys sleep there. We are driving 2 vehicles down so it will provide us a parking spot for our second car too. I found the other thread about renting a campsite and not occupying it and the consensus was Disney doesn't seem to care as long as they get their money.

You're missing the point, however, that there is a rule regarding maximum occupancy in the cabin that you would be violating if you have 8 people in the cabin. This isn't necessarily Disney's rule, but maximum occupancy rules are established and enforced by State and Local laws. Regardless of how you pay for the extra two people, 8 people are not allowed to occupy the cabin.

Yes, and you probably noticed that you read the same responses in the other thread as you got in this one you started, so I wonder why you act so indignant about getting similar responses to your question. See, you might think Disney doesn't care as long as they get their money, but others do who camp at FW. Just because you didn't get the responses you wanted, doesn't mean people are sniping you. They just don't agree with you. To get opinions, isn't that why you posted the original question? :sad2:
