Has anyone run in the Castaway Cay 5k? If so I have a couple of questions..

How hot was it when you ran? What time of year was it?
I am in the Mid West and it has not been above freezing here since November so I am not use to running in the warmth. I do worry about overheating.

Was it a race race or a more run at your own pace thing?
I have only been running for about 6 months (started with the Couch to 5k program). I am getting faster but I am still pretty slooooow. :goodvibes I dont want to hold anyone back or make them run slower because of my pace.

Are there racing numbers?
Am I being way too competitive there to wonder about racing numbers at Castaway Cay? ;)

Do you get a photo or a certificate for running?

If it is raining do they still do the 5k? I'll run in the rain!

Any other tips or suggestions?

Thank you!

Hi CoreyLe, I researched this recently on this board, and I'll try and come back to post a few links for you. Just a couple of things I discovered in my research (I haven't done the CC 5K but plan to when we go early April on the Wonder):

The race takes place in the morning hours, I think around 8:30 AM or so, there is a cast member who acts as the 'guide' for you on the race course.

I don't think you would get too overheated especially since it's during the morning hours in February (we live in Charlotte NC now, but I used to live in Chicago, so I understand not being used to running in warmer weather!).

I get the sense that it's not a huge race with tons of people doing it, maybe just a handful of people, so it probably doesn't get too competitive.

It seems you can run at your own pace, and I think I read that at times some people started walking during the race instead.

I don't think they give you a race number, you just sort of show up at the designated meeting spot and the CM gets you going on the course.

I am not 100% sure if you get a certificate (but I bet you do get one) or a photo taken.

Not sure if they run in the rain.

Hope this helps! Again, I'll try and dig up a few other links I found and post them.

Has anyone run in the Castaway Cay 5k? If so I have a couple of questions..

How hot was it when you ran? What time of year was it? I would say it was about 70 degrees outside. I ran this on the January 31st, 2010 cruise.
I am in the Mid West and it has not been above freezing here since November so I am not use to running in the warmth. I do worry about overheating.

Was it a race race or a more run at your own pace thing? It was more of a run at your own pace event. The cast member who ran with us didn't matter what we did. I ran and walked through the 5K.
I have only been running for about 6 months (started with the Couch to 5k program). I am getting faster but I am still pretty slooooow. :goodvibes I dont want to hold anyone back or make them run slower because of my pace.

Are there racing numbers?
Am I being way too competitive there to wonder about racing numbers at Castaway Cay? ;) Nope, there are no racing numbers. :)

Do you get a photo or a certificate for running? When I did this on the Jan. 31st cruise, we were given a blue DCL water bottle for finishing. I wish there was a certificate for finishing, but the water bottle is still good. :)

If it is raining do they still do the 5k? I'll run in the rain! I unfortunately can't answer this because it was sunny the day I ran it. I would think they would not run it if it was raining for safety reasons like slipping for example.

Any other tips or suggestions? There are water stations all around the course. This was helpful because I would stop at every station to get more water. I would get tired really quickly. ;)

Thank you!

My answers are in bold. Also, feel free to check out this article Dave did for info on the Castaway Cay 5K: http://www.disunplugged.com/2009/07/09/island-tour-on-your-feet-dcl-castaway-cay-5k/. I hope that helps. :)

If they offer it on our PC repo, I'll run it with you!

We ran it in March 2009 & October 2009. In March 2009 it was cold - I would be surprised if it was even 55 degrees that morning. It was perfect morning jogging weather in October though, probaby 65 and cool.

Was it a race race or a more run at your own pace thing?

It was a run. Everyone at their own pace. I always finish 2nd to last. My better half finishes first or second. There were even some jog/walk-ers there.

Are there racing numbers? Am I being way too competitive there to wonder about racing numbers at Castaway Cay? ;)

No race numbers. Nope, your not being to competitive. (If If I don't come in last, I like to know how close to last!! :rotfl:)

Do you get a photo or a certificate for running?

We got a certificate in our room afterwards in October but not in March. Probably depends on the CM.

If it is raining do they still do the 5k? I'll run in the rain!

Don't know.

Any other tips or suggestions?

FYI, for the run in March, the CM gave us the choice of running both bike trails, but the CM in October had us all run only the Tower bike trail. (The CM in March also was the first one to finish and the CM in October only ran half of it and then caught a tram back to the dock.) Again, it must depend on the CM leading the run.

We had about 8-12 people run either time. One cruise was 3-night and the other was a 4-night. I think there is also usually a powerwalk available on the island at 9AM, but the run is fun. It's a great break from jogging Deck 4 in circles 10 times!! :rotfl:

It's not much but I have two pictures of the run at the top of page 26 of my October trip report: http://home.earthlink.net/~runskyhy/TR20091124Asmall.pdf

Here's an older thread about it:

Have a great vacation!

Thank you!

Is the 5K run offered for every cruise that stops at CC?
