Hi Everyone,

Over the past 2 years we've seen this board, (The DIS Unplugged) grow. I've heard a few people call this board a "catch all" for all of the other discussion forums on the DIS. I find that comment strikingly accurrate. So much so, another great example has emerged. The title of this thread says it all; "WISHers".

As many of you may know there is another discussion forum on the DIS called W.I.S.H. I'm not exactly sure of the full story behind the W.I.S.H board, but as you will learn its all about attempting to keep DISers healthy and fit through working with each other by accomplishing specific goals. A great concept because trying to stay healthy and fit alone is extremely difficult.
Here is a link to the W.I.S.H. board
http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=59
And here's a link to one of Dave Parfitt's blogs about the Expedition Everest Challenge and some WISHers.
http://www.disunplugged.com/2009/08/20/expedition-everest-challenge-september-26-2009/

Many of the regular posters to this board may not know it, but we are part of the W.I.S.H story. Some of us have participated in the W.I.S.H story in different ways:
Dave Parfitt (Mouse Skywalker) writes blogs about the Disney Endurance Series and helped lead us through the Muddy Buddy in May of 2009.
http://www.disunplugged.com/2009/05/19/view-from-the-mud-pit-muddy-buddy-orlando-2009/
And Kathy Werling blogged about the Muddy Buddy as well.
http://www.disunplugged.com/2009/05/09/men-muscles-mud-the-adventures-of-six-dirty-disers/
Paul Lunny (launchpad11b) has also lead through example by telling (and showing) us the importance of staying active.

Many of us who used to be overweight, like myself, have been very fortunate to be a part of this board. Because we've kept in close contact, we've not only been able to shed pounds, but we've been able to do something even harder....Keep it off. Many of my close, personal friends on this board were in the same situation as me. Friends like Don (dpuck1998), Chris (crazydisneyman), Todd (jeangor), and even Dave at one point were overweight or not in shape, but through this board and our close contact we've managed to change our lives for the better. We've made health and fitness part of our everyday lives.

The purpose of this thread was not to "blow our own horns" or "pat ourselves on the back" but to bring to light what has happened right here on the DIS Unplugged board over the past 2 years. When special and unique circumstances happen they should be brought to light for the benefit of everyone. Additionally, there are many opportunities discussed on the DIS Unplugged board where you can participate in an endurance race. I know of some threads out there now discussing the 2010 Muddy Buddy and the Wine & Dine Half Marathon. I even remember one DISer who started a thread about his weight loss quest and continually updated us on his progress each week. A great idea considering we are here to support each other.

I would encourage you to become part of our story. participate in a Disney endurance or local community race; even if its just walking/running a 5K. Those races are just as fun as full or half marathons. Join our discussion threads when we are talking about races, exercising, or just keeping fit. We are all here to encourage one another. You would be surprised how keeping in contact with friends on these boards keeps you focused on the task at hand. Whether it's running, walking, or going to the gym every little bit helps.

As many of you are aware this is a very dynamic community. It's amazing what's been accomplished over the years. This is just another example of how the DIS can affect your life in a positive way.

Please tell us your story in this thread or on the Unplugged board. Tell us what you'd like to accomplish and what goals you have in mind. You can even post if you are interested in running in one of the Disney endurance races. Who knows, you may find another DISer interested as well and become partners or supporters. Maybe your motivation is for other health reasons. Either way, we'd love to hear your story. Just remember, every long journey starts with a first step and the DIS is a great place at not only providing that first step, but keeping you moving along the way. :)

I participate on the WISH boards quite a bit. My story isn't really all that inspiring but here it is.

I had to work my way through college. The job I had at the time had a mandatory minimum of 48 hours a week. I took between 12 and 18 credit hours per semester. I also lived at the time with my grandma. The combination of limited time and daily grandma food contrived to make me a bit out of shape and overweight.

When I graduated I got promoted within the company which necessitated a move to the Tampa area of FL. Going from the ridiculous schedule to a 40 hour work week freed up a lot of time and I decided I needed to get back into shape. I decided to look into how to eat healthier and started to exorcise at the gym in my apartment complex. I also started rollerblading every day from one office to the other (I had to be at two different offices every day that were about 3 miles apart) instead of driving.

I really wanted to run but couldn't go more then a mile without feeling like I was going to cough up a lung. I managed to lose the fat I gained in college and became a much better eater. Finally, one of my friends talked me into doing a 5K. I thought why not and trained for it. I finished my first ever 5K in February 2005. It was the 5K that is run as part of the Gasparilla Marathon weekend. I was hooked. I ran for the next 5 months and then moved back home. I had no desire to do anything longer then a 5K but after a while figured...why not a 10K. The cycle repeated itself for a half marathon and finally last October I did my first full.

Unfortunately I was already back in Ohio when I decided I was going to do a half marathon which would be the 2006 WDW half. I still had my pass from living down there which was good until Feb 2006 so I already had park tickets and used it to justify going down for the run.

I started listening to the podcast in early 2008. I think had just returned form my second WDW half in Jan 2008 and I am pretty sure I found the WISH boards with a "Disney running" Google search.

I will be doing the Wine & Dine half in October and the WDW full this coming January.

Ok, that's all I got.

I've been doing Weight Watchers for over a year now, but I've had some backslides because I've overindulged on three vacations in a row. The good news is that I've still kept off the majority of what I lost. This year I'm going to concentrate on getting back what I lost and continuing on until I reach goal.

If that's a year or two from now, no problem. It's not a race, but a journey!

I just got involved with the WISH boards recently. I'm a fan of the Biggest Loser show and found the WISH Biggest Loser challenge and signed up. I've already lost 10 pounds!! I didn't even realize how much I'd lost until our team leader PM'd me and told me that I'd hit that milestone!! I knew I was seeing a change in my body and how my clothes fit-but WOW.

I've been a swimmer my whole life (pools, NOT LAKES) but as I've gotten older I've gotten away from it and gained a lot of weight. Through the WISH board I've not only gotten the motivation to get back to swim practice, but I've also joined a group of folks doing the Couch to 5k running program! I'm in Week 5 and the support I've gotten from that thread has been amazing. I'm doing the ESPN 5k this weekend and I'm going to do the Mickey Halloween run in October. I can't wait to see the difference between the two and how much I will have improved between now and then!

I'm glad you started this thread, because lives are literally being changed because of the WISH board, and because of the DIS boards. This is a great opportunity for those of us who are experiencing those changes to thank Pete and everyone involved for giving us this wonderful place.

For those of you who want to live a healthier lifestyle-PLEASE come over and try out the WISH boards. The support and friendship you'll find there will really help you!

I'm mostly a lurker over at WISH, but I definately credit them with changing my couch potato ways. Less than 2 years ago I couldn't run a mile. I saw the couch 25K thread and was inspired. I always knew about the Disney races, but reading posts over on WISH made them seem do able. In the last 1.5 years I've done Expedition Everest 5K , TOT 13K, Muddy Buddy (with the very kind loan of a bicycle from a WISHer), WDW 1/2 marathon, DL 1/2 marathon, and WDW full marathon. I will be signing up for the Wine & Dine 1/2 and the Goofy in 2011. I guess I'm living proof that the internet doesn't lead to a more sedentary life. :thumbsup2

I am a VERY active member of WISH!

In fact, there are 8 of us DISers who met on a WISH thread 2 years ago and in 9 DAYS we are heading down to WDW to run the Princess Half Marathon together! (And I plan to blog about it for the DisUnplugged!) We are all so excited to finally get together, celebrate our successes and compete in the Half Marathon.

Me, my story isn't all that inspiring, but I will share it just the same. In my 20s, I was very thin and fit--an aerobics instructor in fact. Then, beginning at 30, I had 3 kids in 3 years. I just didn't give my body a chance to bounce back between pregnancies. So an extra 10 pounds from the first baby quickly became 20 after the second and 30 after the third. Of course, with 3 very young children, I didn't make the time to work out or eat right. So, those 30-ish pounds just stayed on. And at 5'2", 30 pounds really looks like a lot.

After taking a family trip to WDW, I was back home looking at our photos of the trip. And I saw this one picture of me with Figment and I was horrified. How had I let this go on for so long? So that day I went to the WISH forums, found the thread I mentioned above, and the rest is history. That was just about 2 years ago. And since that time, I have lost the weight, done 3 Half Marathons and 2 triathlons. And in all honesty, I owe it all to WISH! I still have about 7-8 pounds to lose and will focus on that once I get through the upcoming race, but at least I am comfortable in my skin again.

Here are my before and after pics:

Thanks for starting this thread! I started a journal on the WISH Journals sub-forum in December 2009.

I've been overweight most of my life. When I was in college, I lost 75 pounds. I felt great! After keeping the weight off for a couple of years, I started gaining it back. I gained 30 to 40 pounds after starting an office job and several more after my mom had a stroke. After she passed away, I turned to food and gained quite a bit of weight. Since college, I've gained 134 pounds. That was a difficult number for me to swallow, and it felt overwhelming to start the process of losing weight.

I decided to start a journal after planning a trip to Disney World (for February of 2010). The trip gave me motivation to start walking and eating healthy. I was encouraged by the amount of support received. When posting my ups and downs, someone was always there for support.

While at my trip to Disney, I noticed how great my feet felt compared to the last time. It was definitely a perk of walking everyday. Since the trip is over, I now have to get back to work on my journal! Thanks to the WISH forum, I have almost made it to one of my mini-goals!

My story is that it is thanks to the Podcast Cruise - and the incredible group of friends I made on that trip - that got me back to Weight Watchers and serious about it for the first time in my life.

I came back from that cruise wanting to be a better friend. And that started with being a better ME.

No journey is complete without bumps in the road, but today I hit the 28# loss mark, and that'll be doubled by PCC Todd.0. :goodvibes

Well, I guess I should jump in too. I'm in the Princess Half group that Erika mentioned, but I will be there in 7 days! :cool1: I found encouragement and support in this group of ladies. Along with that, many of us have become friends. It is rare that we go very long without talking.

My story isn't all that impressive. I've had some struggles, but I can at least say that I'm getting there. After the half, I will begin training for a tri. I never would have dreamed that. I can't wait to reach this goal.

Actually, I found the Disboards and the podcast due to WISH. My family are Disneyphiles, but I had happily used another Disney website for years and never even knew this place existed. Imagine that! In that time, we ran three Disney Half Marathons. So, when the email came regarding Expedition Everest, the best information I could find on the topic was from Dave Parfitt's blog which, of course, led to the WISH board and then the podcast. Although I have peeked into the boards for a while and was immediately hooked on the podcast, I only registered a couple of days ago. Since we have a short trip to Disney coming up, I thought this would be a perfect time to join in this great group.

Fitness wise, I run a little bit, do a few classes at the gym, and use at home fitness DVD's liberally - sometimes while listening to the podcast! When I get sloppy with my eating, I use the Weight Watchers online tools to get back on track. I have been doing that for the last few months, but my real goal for the year is to get stronger and to reduce my body fat in proportion to my muscle mass. If my running improved a little in the meantime, all the better. So far so good!

I hope to join in on the WISH board's threads as I become more comfortable with how everything works. I am interested in doing other Disney fitness events, including the Muddy Buddy and maybe some other running events. So I will use the board for advice on these. In the meantime, I will just be inspired by all of the great stories and learn from everyone's tips!

Thanks for starting this thread Aaron. I have not said much here or on facebook but I joined the WISH board in late December. The BL9 thread was posted here on the podcast board and I figured what the heck let me check it out. Then I also joined the C25K program thread because my husbands P90X was just to hard for me. Like PeterPan09 (sorry I should know your name by now but you dont have a siggy) both threads have given me great inspiration and support. I will say it here now but I didnt want to brag on the podcast board or facebook. I have changed so much in 2 months. I can run 2 miles straight (25 min). I could hardly go 1 min when I started. Everyone who has met me knows I am not a little girl.:rotfl: I have lost 18 pounds. I owe it all the WISH and the DIS. I love running who would have ever known. It is becomming addicting for me. I would have never even started if it was not for the WISH board. So come on over and join us. It is an awesome place to be.:goodvibes

Another active WISH-er here...I have a journal that helps me keep track of my progress.

I'm currently down 34 pounds and am running in my first 1/2 marathon shortly (Disney of course!)...who would have thought that I'd have come this far. I certainly didn't think I would have - but now I have a WISH journal to go back through and really see how I've progressed - and have made some new friends in the process.

I've lurked on DisBoards for a few years, but this year I finally started talking more thanks to DisUnplugged and WISH.

Aaron, what a great post. I wish that I could post an inspirational story when it comes to weight loss, but my weight is my biggest failure in life. I went to visit a doctor, and he told me that when I want to snack have a cucumber instead of chips. Well, I'm not completely stupid. I KNOW I should have a cucumber instead of a bag of chips, but I just can't seem to make myself eat that cucumber. I have been a little overweight ever since I was ready to get married. An aunt told me that I would be a much better person and happier if I lost a little weight before the wedding. To her, me being overweight was something to gossip about. I got in trouble for what I called her.

I have successfuly lost weight twice. The first time was with a friend, and I lost 40 pounds. She failed. I succeeded. I didn't want to let her down. She let me down, though, by not showing up to work-out and by cheating with the eating. So, when it came time to her wanting to try again, I couldn't do it again, because I knew it would matter if I let her down.

The second time was a small amount, but I have kept it off.

But, to me, the worst thing about losing weight is failing at it. My mom is a chronic dieter. She has been up and down more times than I can count. I don't want to be her. I've tried C25K, and while I did get to week 6, I believe, it bothered my knees, and I decided for my healthy I need to lose weight first and then try that again.

I am joining a new gym on Monday and I'm hoping that that will be a good jump start. I need to be a better example for my children. And, I really love my husband, and he deserves to be married to a better me. So, thanks for the inspiration. I hope one day I can post my story. :)

I love the WISH board!

I am doing my very first half marathon at Disney next Sunday (Princess Half) and finally really believe I can do it!

I am going to be mostly walking and have a LONG way to go before most of the world would consider me "healthy" - but at least I am out there working on it!

I need to do more with my diet to go with the exercise. I find the exercise makes me hungry! :rolleyes1

Thanks for starting this thread! Hopefully more folks will be inspired to hang out on the WISH board. :)

Cool thread Aaron. All of you who have gotten into shape are a real inspiration. I can honestly say, I'm not sure I would be able to do what you did. I'm forced to stay in shape due to my profession. Without that motivator, who knows. Keep it up guys. :thumbsup2

I don't participate in the WISH board but my weight loss is directly related to Disney. So here is my story.

At the beginning January 2006 we booked our first family trip to Disney. At that time I weighed 262.50 pounds. About 4-5 days after I booked that trip I started worrying about several things. The top two items were fitting into the airplane seat without needing a seatbelt extender and I also worried about fitting onto the rides. Within days of booking that vacation I joined Weight Watchers. When we went on vacation in March 2006 I was down 20 pounds. I didn't need a seatbelt extender and I fit into all the rides just fine.

When we went back to Disney in March 2007 I weighed 145 pounds. That first trip back to Disney as a family is what motivated me to lose my weight and I have kept it off since. If it weren't for that initial trip I don't know what would have motivated me to lose the weight.

My husband is now loosely following Weight Watchers and is down 25 pounds with 20 pounds to go. We are both working on getting and staying healthy. In the last 6 months I have started going to the gym 4 days a week and 2 of those days I work with a personal trainer.

Knowing that other people on this board (Dave and Nikki that I can name off the top of my head) help me remember that I'm not in this journey alone and that I'm not the only one who has been there. It's nice to know that! As of today I weigh 144 pounds and continue to keep the weight off.

Many of you know my story with weight. I lost 119 pounds and have kept it off for two years this March. The WISH forums were always helpful to visit. To me, it isn't hard to lose weight; it's more challenging to keep it off. I'm committed to it though and so far things are going well.

Congrats to all of you on your journey!

Suzette --- We have so much more in common than I realized. I weighed 264 when I first began losing weight. I'm now at 147. :)

I'm amazed at some of the stories everyone has posted. I feel like I could pull some aspects of each story and relate it to my story. Maybe, in some way, we all think alike in some respects. One thing we all have in common for sure is we all love the theme parks. :goodvibes

Keep the stories coming.

The thing that is so cool to me is how many WISH'ers use a Disney race or a Disney trip as their goal or reward for getting healthier.

At 34 I was about 20 pounds overweight. Sorry, not brave enough to post pics. Three kids, 9, 7 and 2, full time job and husband. I was a runner in high school and ran on occasion in college and between pregnancies. I was in decent shape before the last child but was struggling to loose it after she was born thus the 20 extra pounds.

I started walking around my neighborhood (1 1/2 miles). I walked for a few weeks in the evening and felt really good. But everytime I would see someone running I would be jealous, I wanted to be that person running...not walking. So my ego got the best of me and I started running portions of my route. I was embarrassed that I couldn't run all of it. But slowly I started making progress, little by little. I run while our daughter is in dance class, even if I only get in 25 minutes.

Last May, at 35 my husband and I ran our first 5k and loved it. He had also been working out and running with friends after work. It has been great that we both workout and encourage each other. It is hard to sit on the couch when you know the other one is out there running, you know you should be doing it too.

We spent last summer running several 5k races. At the end of last summer I completed a Triathlon Sprint. That was something I was really proud of and something I couldn't believe I could actually do. Being healthy and eating well is the example I want to set for my kids and it makes me feel good about myself. I don't do it everyday but I've stay on track pretty well. I have lost 15 of my extra 20 pounds, hoping this spring to lose the last 5 lbs.

A good friend of ours told posted on fb that she "Never regrets a workout" and that is very true.

Let me start by saying, those of you still working at it, keep it up. I think I'm still a work in progress, ideally I would be down another 15 lbs to hit my goal weight. I have ups and downs, good weeks and bad weeks, but keep starting over and keep trying. BUT! Enjoy life, if you do it, GREAT! If not, that is fine. Life goes on and don't let a few pounds make you feel any better or worse about yourself. Weight is something we notice about people, but after getting to know all the great people here, it isn't a big deal. Personalities count! I'd much rather hang out with a group of fun fluffy people than skinny angry models any day!

That said, my journey started at work. I'd been fairly active most of my life, playing basketball, football and doing most outdoor activities. One thing I NEVER did is run. I hate running, I HATE running!! Did I mention I hate running? We started a biggest loser contest at work and I joined. A little bit of my competitive streak kicked in and I wanted to win. Did I win? No! I came in second. We had another contest, Did I win? No, I came in second. My weight at its worst was close to 250. I lost about 20 lbs the first contest and about 10 or so more the second time. I did it by eating better and working out with a friend. We didn't do any running at that point, but we did a lot of cardo, free weights and other misc work outs. Everything from stairs, sprints, sled pushing. I was his guinea pig for testing work outs he was going to use for football conditioning. Love every minute of it. During the process I got stronger and put on muscle. Any one losing weight, let me tell you how much that helps. Your muscle burns calories for you, getting solid and working out will pay dividends in the long haul. In come the PodCast Cruise! Muddy Buddy talk, ugh. Guess what, I need to run now! So I added that into my workout and started running. What do you know, I can run. I'm slow...but I can run. I started with 1/2 mile, worked up to a mile, and soon was running 5K. When the muddy buddy came around I had training the full distance and my goal was to do it without walking. I was able to do that (Even though Paul had to wait for me). As I was running I realized how easy and effective this was as a workout. No need to go to the gym (Although I still workout more than I run) and I can toss on the iPod and run away the troubles of the day. I'm down to 200 lbs right now, still hoping to shed a little more. But now I know how to do it and what it takes and I don't think I'll ever be 250 again. I've run as far as 10 miles, I plan to run a Tri-spring in the spring and a full tri by the fall. My goal is to run a half marathon in the summer. This is from a guy that is NOT a runner! Never have been and never will be.

Thank you for cropping me out of the picture. :thumbsup2

What you said about enjoying life is true. I found I am in a better mood when I workout but I had a good life even with an extra 15 lbs.

And with the weight loss I have found different "problems areas"....no one is perfect.....okay, except maybe Paul. :worship:

Thank YOU Aaron for starting this thread and for our freindship.

I was slim until the birth of child #3 when I was in my mid-thirties, but I was never in great physical condition. I lost the baby weight pretty quickly, but a combination of middle age, less activity, and not paying attention contributed to a gradual weight gain. My highest weight was about 195 in 2000, and I have the fat passport photo to prove it! (Thank goodness I am getting a new passport this year!) It wasn't until my oldest daughter was in college in 2003 that my husband and I went on a low-carb diet, and I got more serious about exercising. I lost 25 pounds and kept the weight off for about 2.5 years. Then it crept back due to laziness and falling back into bad eating habits. :(

I lurk on and off on the WISH board, and I am also a big fan of The Biggest Loser show. When the WISH board had a spring Biggest Loser challenge from Jan. 1-April 16 (the day before I go to WDW for my birthday trip...and I'm not telling which birthday!) - I signed up. I also signed up for the February exercise challenge. While my weight loss since Jan. 1 hasn't been great, I've lost about 20 pounds since last fall. I've been doing a pretty good job of exercising since Jan. 1st, and I intend to meet my exercise goal for February. Having to report my weight each week to one person on the WISH board and posting my exercise progress has really helped me to stay on track.

I am NOT a runner, and I don't intend to start - at my age! ;) However, my goal is to walk a half marathon. If the Princess Half Marathon is the first weekend in March 2011 (same as this year) - I would like to register for it. It would be quite an accomplishment for me - especially as it would be about 7 weeks before a milestone birthday.

Another Biggest Loser 9 participant checking in!!

I never had a weight problem until I had two kids and 4 miscarriages in 3 years. I ate for two and two more and two more.

I got a Wii Fit for Christmas and started using it every day and I joined WW mid-January. I've lost almost 25 pounds in 2 months.

I have Lupus and in the past I have used that as an excuse to not exercise. Not anymore, baby! I love working out now. It's the highlight of my day!

I started doing the C25k program last month. I love to run and I am excited to do my first 5k in July and I hope to run in the Princess half marathon next year. :)

And I am really looking forward to using the fitness center on the ship in December and jogging around deck 4!!! Whoo Hoo!

Castaway Cay 5K!!

Ok, since so many of us have made great strides and others are well on their way, we should totally do the Castaway Cay 5K during Podcast Cruise 2.0!

For those who have never done a 5k before, make this your goal! I mean, how cool would it be to have that as your first 5k?!?!

PLUS, the best part is that you get to get off the ship first thing, before anyone else, and run the island while it is EMPTY. Just beautiful and pristine! :cloud9:

For those who are nervous or don't have someone to run with, I am going to set up running/walking groups so that you will have someone to go with, or even a large group. When the cruise gets a little closer, we can be more formal about things.

But for right now, my husband Jeff can coach (be support) for those running at the 7-8 minute per mile pace, I will draft our own David Parfitt to coach/support the 8-10 minute per milers. (And Dave, if you are reading this, I know I haven't asked you yet, but I also know that I don't have to! :goodvibes ) And I will be there for anyone who is at the 10+ minute per mile pace. That way, we will have Podcasters/Wishers at different places on the course as well as men, women, etc. so that everyone has someone they can feel comfortable with during the 5k! How great is this going to be! Woot! :cool1:

Again, we will start a specific thread for this about 3-4 months before the cruise.

And Frank, feel free to jump in as support staff, too, since I know you will be running that morning. ;)

Thank you for the invite but I won't be on PCC 2.0. I'm going down for marathon weekend in January and the cruise is just too close.

I did do the 5K on PCC 1.0 along with fellow DISers Dave and Don. There might have been a few others from the group but I can't remember. It is more of a group training run then a race so there is no need to worry about your time or pace. Just go out and run at your own pace. It kind of slots into the gap between training and an "organized" 5K for lack of a better word. For anyone who is close enough to also come for marathon weekend in January (or has a better travel budget then me) it would be a good warmup for the marathon weekend 5K...just sayin' :rolleyes1

If anyone has any questions about the run or any 5K in general I'd be more then happy to help out.

I'm in too.

I've recently begun to post on the WISH boards. I am by far not athletic. In fact I am far from being healthy. Thanks to the first podcast cruise, I started posting more and got interested in some things going on around the time of the cruise. I signed up for something I had never experienced before, a Muddy Buddy. I was on the third Muddy Buddy team with Chris (crazydisneyman). With the support and encouragement of the Muddy Buddies and cheer squad, getting to a better fitness level was much easier. Even though we crossed the finish line towards the end of the pack (mostly because I'm not too speedy), we finished. With a great sense of camaraderie, we finished. The DIS Unplugged gave me a glimpse at what I could be.

Since podcast cruise 1.0, I have neglected any sort of exercise. It shows. I'm a little rounder. I get tired faster. My mind moves slower. I don't like it. I want to change, to be a better, healthier, happier me.

A few things have kick started me on my way. First, hearing about and registering for the Inaugural Food & Wine Half Marathon this October and knowing that I would be there with at least two of my close friends. (Since then, I have learned of a slew of DISers that will be attending.) I am cheap/thrifty/tightwadish. After paying a non-refundable entry fee, I have some incentive to be ready to run/walk it.

Secondly, I witnessed Marathon Weekend. Awe inspiring would be an understatement. The air was charged with so much energy--life--excitement; all the while being barely above freezing and an unG~dly early hour in the morning. I was a spectator and I dashed around (using Disney transport) from the starting line to the TTC, MK, DAK, DHS, and back to Epcot and the finish line. Along the way, I saw thousands of people. All shapes. All sizes. All ages. All speeds. I knew right then, that I had no excuse. I spent a great deal of that weekend and the following week talking to Dave Parfitt (Mouse Skywalker) and picking his brain. He not only encouraged and supported my goal of participating in 2011 Marathon weekend, he shared his experiences and exposed me to some resources to help get me to my goal.

Even though I don't have any physical milestones, I am on my way.

**Found the answer: the registration fee for the Wine & Dine half marathon on Oct. 2, 2010 is $135. It will be HOT then. Good thing the race is at night. http://espnwwos.disney.go.com/events/wine-and-dine-half-marathon/

It looks like I'm going specifically for the race. The only way this would change is if Kim decides she wants to go over Anna's Fall Break at the end of October. Then I'd probably not go the first week of October for the race. Right now I'm about 90% sure I'm doing the 5K and/or the half relay.

Guess I'll tell my story too. I don't post on the WISH boards but I should go check them out.

I started Weight Watchers back in late summer/ early fall and have had a few set backs but so far have lost 30 pounds. Being stuck in the house for two weekends in a row did not help.

I did try the C25K but did not make it past week one, so I need to get back on that track this week or at least some form of moving around.

I'll offer the somewhat short version of my story. Those of you who've seen my on the WISH board or follow with me on facebook at all may well have heard some of this.

My path to getting healthier started a little over a year and a half ago now. A good friend and (now former) coworker of mine had been into 5k races and the like for some time, and was getting pretty stoked about the idea of training for a half marathon that fall. She always seemed so pumped about it, and it piqued my interest a bit. Hearing about the WDW marathon and the like helped even more.

Soooo... one day I was talking to her and said I was gonna try the whole running thing, because eventually I wanted to run a marathon. A few days later, after getting some basic clothing and the like, I headed out for some running and walking. I was winded after a minute or so, but on my way to my first 5K. Nine months, and 26.2 miles later, I felt like I could do anything.

I'm about 20 pounds down from the weight I started. For a short while I was making a more concentrated effort on the weight-loss side of it, but I found that to come at serious detriment to my overall training (e.g. feeling light-headed a lot, not having good energy when out running, etc). Now, my weight loss isn't specifically consistent or quick, but is slow and steady nonetheless. More importantly, though, my overall fitness, endurance, and generally well-being are pretty good.

Fast forward to last November, when my wife and I split up, and I found myself with an interesting combination of a lot more time on my hands, but a lot less motivation (at least for a while). My motivation has since come back, and the extra time I have is being put to pretty good use. At least three nights a week are spent doing running or similar high-intensity cardio (1 hour total workout time is considered short now), with a few shorter and/or strength workouts kind of sprinkled in at other times.

I haven't picked a spring marathon yet (that said, anyone with a good suggestion please let me know), but apart from that, next major event will be the Muddy Buddy in May. After that, I have something else on deck, a new level of craziness, but I don't want to say much more than that just yet.

Never too late to get into shape. Motivation can be an interesting thing. It's often said of running that it's a solo sport, and except for the super-elite, you don't really have to worry about competitors. One thing I've learned though, and it's actually the source of my own motivation, is that even in a solo sport, there is a definite competitor. One that is very real. My competitor starts running, much like I do, just as the gun goes off. Unlike me though, my competitor runs perfectly even splits, never once stops, and is always waiting for me at the finish line. My competitor is everyone's competitor, and ticks off one second at a time. A solo sport, yes, but it's always runner vs. the clock. There is no better motivation.

I told my story last year some time but don't mind sharing again. I was taking Cholesterol medication and one day, went to my doctor who gave me a prescription for a second BP med because I'd maxed out the strength of the one I was on.

That day, I began to change. It took a year but I managed to drop enough weight to leave all medication behind. I never filled the second BP prescription and have it hanging on my wall in my office.

My form of exercise was cycling. I bought a bike and began riding 2-3 miles per day. The culmination of my weight loss and what I'll feel was my personal finish line was my GKTW bike ride when I rode 116 miles in one day. I have several friends that can do double or triple that but none were over 300 pounds the year prior to that or hadn't been on a bike on years. That fundraiser did more for me that I did for the kids.

Oh, and no jokes about the kilt! :rotfl2:

Great job! I was thrilled after my first 5K and it really gave me a shot in the arm. Now I have to get back at it :)

Actually, I just went through that epiphany-I started working out after work and it has made a HUGE difference for me. I'm in a better mood, I enjoy the workout more and best of all-I actually DO it instead of planning for it and then hitting the snooze and skipping it. Sure, I'd love to be one of those people that gets up at dawn and gets out there-but it's just not happening.

Arrgg! I wish this weather would turn for the better. I haven't been on my bike in three months! I've put on a few pounds over the winter but not bad. I just don't like how I have to eat when I'm not riding.

It looks like Sunday will be 65F, I can do that.

Good morning unplugged wishers! I'm somewhere around Atlanta (halfway point). After I try to find some breakfast, I will be on the way again. My workout today will consist of yelling at traffic and outlet shopping in about 7 hours. I might resort tour too. I have been waiting for this extended weekend for so long!

I'd love to do that too. Our gym gets very, very crowded at the end of the workday. So much so, that you have to wait for weights (LOL) or you bump into people. Not fun.

Speaking of that, I can't find a good set of headphones to run with. I currently have the Nike running headphones that work good. Problem is with my new iPod shuffle the controls are on the headphones. The earbuds suck and I can't run without them falling out.

I haven't had any luck finding good earbuds. I bought a set of Bose QCIIs for lounging around at home, but use the earbuds that came with my IPhone. Problem is sometimes they fall out during cardio, or I get my hand/arm caught in the wires and they get jerked out of my ears. Gosh *(#*@!!! Is it just me or does that happen to anyone else?

Tuck the cords into your shirt thru the neck. It works for me while wearing the i-pod. I run in an underarmor shirt so it keeps the cord pretty secure. If you wear a loose shirt it might not work so well.

does anyone like earbuds?????????? :confused3
i HATE them.... not only do they not stay in, they hurt....
it's as if apple went out of its way to design something uncomfortable..
with every new ipod i get, i use the earbuds for about 2 days, then remember why i hate them and go out and buy a pair of comfortable earphones...

i've always suspected the only reason people use the original apple earbuds is so other people will know they're using an ipod and think they're cool (i suppose that works more here than in the US, where it's probably not that big a deal to have an ipod)...
or maybe there are people out there with ears shaped for those things?
for me they're an implement of torture...
and there's no chance at all they'll stay in my ears while i'm exercising...

Sort of a silly question, but do you plan on going back to your room to sleep? The 5K starts at 7 AM and the half starts at night with the party afterwards. It sounds like a long day.

Not silly at all. I think that is the plan. While being up for nearly 24 hours isn't an issue, running 13.1 miles at the end of those hours would be. A nap is most certainly in order.

Wow, impressive Todd. Do you plan to run that distance during training? I always wondered if I should run the full 13 before the race or if 10 was enough.

Most likely. I know the training guide I am using says that I don't have to, but I would feel more comfortable knowing I can do it.

That's kind of what I was thinking too. Not so much staying up, but combining it with 16.2 miles and it could easily be a problem.

That's kind of what I was thinking too. Not so much staying up, but combining it with 16.2 miles and it could easily be a problem.

Coming from a different angle, I'm going to make an argument for exactly the opposite. First off, you aren't going to sleep well during your nap (the same way you don't sleep well the night before any race). Also, having done the 5k earlier, particularly if you aren't very used to running long distances, staying up and moving may be better on your body than laying down sleeping. Muscles tighten up and soreness is actually sometimes worse that way. Lastly, the excitement and adrenaline of the event itself will likely be more than enough to keep you going anyway.

Just to back up a bit, to the discussion on 10 vs 13 miles... if this is your first half, I'd tend to argue to just work up to 10 miles. You have plenty of time, so if you're able to get to that point sooner, and have time to work up to 13, that's fine, but don't stress over it either. Particularly as your first half, more longer runs may not mean more experience, but may mean greater chance of injury before you get to the starting line. The "know I can do it" line of thought is pretty common, but I always like to ask what is the alternative? You get to the mile 10 marker on race day, and throw your hands up and say "Ah, forget it, I can't do it." Not gonna happen, I promise!

This is all just friendly advice of course :)

Great goal Todd. You've come a long way since the Muddy Buddy. I got 4 more miles in today. I'm doing more cardio lately. I'm still lifting pretty seriously as well. I'm currently 215lbs. I'd like to be closer to 205, although as long as I'm healthy and in good shape I'm not all that concerned with the number on the scale. I've always been a heavy guy. pirate:
