View Full Version : What's the crisis music for a "snow hurricane"?

Awwww, come on!
DW and I are supposed to fly out to Orlando tomorrow (Thursday) morning. This is an adult weekend getaway at Disney for us, as the "cool Aunt" is coming out from Cleveland to watch the girls.
I wake up to the paper this morning to see the following headline on the front page. I kid you not, this is verbatim: "Rochester area braces for snow hurricane".
WTH?? :confused3 I don't even know what a snow hurricane is. They're calling for at least a foot of snow between Thursday and Friday.
“It’s going to be a very nasty storm," said Alex Sosnowski, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.com, a weather service based in State College, Pa.
An AccuWeather press release said the storm “will be nothing short of a monster” and “may seem more like a ‘snow hurricane’ than a blizzard.”
Whipping winds with gusts up to 50 mph are expected in the Rochester region, he said, and could create hazardous driving conditions on tomorrow and Friday.
Wasn't it 50 mph winds that kept the Disney Magic stuck at Castaway Cay? Great.... I'm sure that won't be a problem for the "Cool Aunt" driving over from Cleveland.
I'm hoping we get out tomorrow before the storm hits.

Not that I'm trying to make this sound any worse than it is, but I would assume they mean blizzard. After this winter I've officially "had it." :sad2: The storm you are bracing for is only dumping an inch or two on us. I sure hope the beginning of March is much more tame than February has been.
Dave - I hope everything works out and you can get out of there, and your "cool aunt" can get out of Cleveland. Pixie Dust your way my brother. :wizard:

Hmmm... Gotcha. Well, whatever it may be I hope you get out of there and everything works out. You and Dana certainly deserve a nice weekend together. Get out early if you can. Keep us posted.

"Awwwwwww c'mon on!" were my exact words too! We are taking my brother on a suprise trip for his 40th birthday to the Seneca Allegheny casino in New York and I've been watching the weather all week, nothing about a storm until last night. :headache: Here in Cleveland, it doesn't look like (so far) that we are going to get it too bad, if your Aunt is driving today it looks like she will be okay. The sun is even out here right now. With luck, it looks like you should be okay to get out early Thursday morning, after that....... :confused3
and on the bright side, maybe the "Snow Hurricane" will get you an extra day at Disney :goodvibes

Unfortunately we can't really leave earlier. The main problem is Dana's sister driving over from Cleveland to watch the girls. She can't leave until Thursday because she has to teach. That means she'll be driving right into the heart of the storm in a little Toyota Prius - fighting driving snow and 50 mph winds. Uugh...

Dave, that really stinks! Here in the Ithaca area they are only calling for a couple of inches overnight but said that it could get more messy as the day goes on (cruddy for the commute home) for a total of 7 inches-ish. Maybe the worst of it won't hit until you get out? But it figures, ya know? All winter the storms have been mercifully tame for us in central NY. Why now?
I'm hoping for the best for you! :wizard:

I am all so sick of snow. We can't see to drive around corner, because the snow is to high. You need to be Paul Bunyan to throw the snow you shovel up on the snow banks. March is one of the months we get a lot of snow. I am not sure where we are supposed to put it. The bad thing, is the snow is not melting in between these storms. I am sure a lot of Mn. is going to have flooding. We will be fine, No water around us. :scared1:

If you can get through the drive, but not the flights, I will remind you we haven't gotten hit as bad up here...:rolleyes1
Flights would likely be able to get out of Toronto. (Hamilton doesn't fly to Orlando as often.)

As far as I can tell, it's a "snow hurricane" because the winds will be much stronger than a 'normal' blizzard. Lastest projections for our area of western NJ is 12-24 inches of snow.:scared1: In addition, my law firm is scheduled to move its offices to a new location over the next few days.

Fight back I say!! I've had all I can take, and I can't take no more!
I just went out with the snowblower and cleared all the snow from around my camper and in front of it. TAKE THAT! I just might put on some bermuda shorts, sunglasses and a Hawaiian print shirt (with Mickey on it of course) and sit out beside that camper with a beverage in hand and camp fire.:rotfl2:
Maybe cabin fever is setting in a little??

It's always something here in Western NY - we almost didn't make it out for DISapalooza in December.
The Buffalo weather service is saying that we could see 3-4 inches of snow starting in the afternoon here.
With that said - i think "super Aunt" will be able to get to you before it starts to get trecherous on the interstate.
If your flight out is early in the day I don't see any problems - :thumbsup2

They're saying here (south of you) that we're expecting an inch of snow by morning but that the snow hurricane is supposed to hit during the day on Thursday. If you have a morning flight (I hope so) you should be ok. I hope you have a safe flight and a fantastic vacation!

Okay, I feel really bad that this storm is coming your way. I do.
But the weather services are just making up words now.
To qualify as a "hurricane", there have to be winds of 74 mph. They're predicting 50 mph...which is a "blizzard". BLIZZARD, weather people! Stop making up words to try to make what is already a stinky situation seem even worse!
I hope it isn't as bad as those morons on TV are drumming it up to be, and that you are still able to take your trip.
Edited to add: at least your wife found the voice of reason in all of this.

I'm sorry ya'll are getting more snow..that's one of the reasons I won't move back home...the weather. As for us here, southeastern VA, we started to get rain an hour ago with cold wind....this morning on the news, I looked at 2 of our 3 local stations and one said that we could expect 2 inches of snow by tomorrow morning, and the other said a dusting, but it wouldn't last because the ground has warmed up. Now, I ask you...they all get the information from the same places, how could the two stations vary so much in their forcast? BTW, the one that said a dusting is the station that I trust.

The weather 'casters I trust most are the ones that say honestly, "We don't know. Too many variables at this time. It could be this, or this. We'll keep you updated." None of this nonsense of Snow Hurricanes. Just the facts, ma'am.
I so HEAR YA!!!! I surprised Chris with a cruise for hir birthday this weekend out of Port Canaveral...we fly out of Buffalo tomorrow afternoon!!!
The last time we were both flying on the same day you almost missed your dinner with Marty Sklaar and we sat on the runway for over 2 hours!!
Maybe together we are bad luck and we should start alternating vacation times!
I checked out of Toronto and nothing under $1000 a person....gotta love Canada and the freaking air taxes!!!!

Dave, I hope you're able to get out!
Looking at the map on Weather.com, it looks like we're going to get about 6-12 inches in the next 48 hours where I am, in the NYC metro area. My parents are freaking out because they're flying to Aruba on Saturday morning. Traveling in the winter in the North can be such a headache. :headache:

Thanks everyone for the good wishes. Unfortunately, we just cancelled our trip. I think DW and I would be able to get out on time tomorrow, but the big question mark was my sister-in-law driving from Cleveland to Rochester to watch the girls while we're gone. The plan was to put the girls on the school bus, we would leave, the girls would come home to friends and wait for the "Cool Aunt" to arrive Thursday evening from Cleveland. Everything we're reading says the Cool Aunt would be driving right into the teeth of the storm. It just doesn't look safe for her to be driving, and seems like a lot to ask of her. So we did the conservative thing and called it off.
**sigh** it stinks being an adult sometimes...
Sorry to hear that Dave, but it does sound like you made the right decision.

See, even God likes to play jokes on lawyers! :lmao: JK
However, God is also on the side of honorable lawyers. We live 58 miles from our office and our weather here is supposed to be way worse here than east NJ. For us, it could be a snow day when everyone else is trying to move.:rotfl2::thumbsup2
Blizzard, snow hurricane, whatever. The weather is expected to be bad. But calling the TV folks, weather people, et al, morons is a bit extreme, isn't it? I realize there is little love lost between those of us in the TV news business and the public we serve, but please, let's keep the name calling to a minimum. Or, simply change the channel, or turn the TV off.:thumbsup2.
Dave, you of all people should understand. Let's not blame the messenger.:rotfl:

How come all weather people jump for Joy when they can play the crisis music. Here in Boston a couple weeks ago they said that the area (Boston) was going to get 10-12 inches. Schools were canceled, and people sent home early. Quess what? NOTHING fell in Boston but a 1/2 inch or so.

For the same reason that the Weather Channel people can't wait to stand and report from the middle of a blizzard, hurricane, tornado, ice storm, etc. They're different from the rest of us and it's what they do. Plus they get paid to scare us.

Your snow hurricane has reached us this morning and has turned into a rain blizzard (no, not the Weather channel's words:lmao:). Winds gusting to 100kmh (60 mph) and 100mm of rain (~3-4 inches). Lots of areas with electricity knocked out, localized flooding and possible storm surge flooding. This is on top of the snow that we have currently on the ground covering the storm sewers, of course. Still, I won't have to shovel it:thumbsup2. Lots of delays at the airport but I don't think there will be many cancellations.

The weather here is been INSANE.
It snowed all yesterday. Heavily. From early morning to early this morning. It's finally stopped...for now. We had a huge branch fall on our roof (thankfully I don't think it damaged anything), there's snow past my knees, and multiple big branches that fell around our property. (Luckily they didn't hit anything.) There's also snow weighing down branches so badly they're touching our windows. I haven't seen anything like this in years. Needless to say, my work is closed - not that I could get out anyway. Some huge branches fell in our driveway, blocking my part of the garage. I'm scared to send my dogs outside! And we're supposed to get more snow and wind today! (Although it's not snowing now.) I'm going to stay inside and hope our power stays on.
On LI, it was a monsoon all day yesterday, switched over to snow in the evening and now we have 6-8" of wet heavy snow weighing down all the trees shrubs and power lines and it's still snowing. What a mess. :sad2:
I'm off to the moving to Fl. thread. I can dream, can't I ;)
