I had to leave work today to get home and take Micky (boyfriend) to the ER. He has a kidney stone that is 8 mm which is really big, and now his kidneys are swelling and not functioning right. They admitted him to the hospital to undergo some type of procedure tomorrow.

I know this isn't a huge deal compared to other things, but i'm nervous, I never saw him like this before.

And I've also haven't spent a night away from him in 6 years, so this will be a little weird too.

Any good thoughts you have will be appreciated.
thanks,
andrea

We had a friedn that had the laser-pulverizing done last summer. Worked very well and he was up and at our July 4th bash two days later.

I hope your boyfriend starts feeling better soon.

My Dad had lithotripsy(shockwaves to pulverize the stone) done last week. He had a large stone that was not passable and was in alot of pain. The procedure wasnt painful at all and he is feeling much better. So, if your boyfriend is having that procedure, its not painful.

Is the procedure the one where they will zap it so that it breaks up the stones???? Hopefully if it's that big!!!!

Oh, I wish him the best. I had a very large stone that had to be removed by cystoscope. You are under general anesthesia and they have to place a stint for a few days afterward - awful. They will probably put him on heavy antibiotics for infection.

I was told lithotripsy was not an option because of the size of stone - I could end up with several more still good size stones. 8 mm sounds huge.

DH also had stones and it was very painful for him - his was teeny, tiny and caused extreme pain.

Prayers & PD coming your way.. That can be a very painful condition so even though it will be hard for the two of you to be apart for a bit it's really in his best interest..

I feel so bad for you - is there someone else you could stay with?

Please keep us posted..

Hi everyone. First of all thank you all so much for your good thoughts! I left after I posted, and I just got home now and was so happy/touched to see all these replies.

Well, Micky is not having horrible pain anymore, (ahhh, morphine), but tomorrow morning at 11 he is having a cystoscopy where hopefully the doctor can grab the stone and get it out that way, otherwise we have to reschedule for a lithotripsy. I'm kind of nervous because they numb the lower half of his body and it lasts a few hours, and then they put him in a twilight sleep. The shot goes in his spine!! He had a choice between this and general anesthesia, but he doesn't like the idea of a breathing tube and all that , so he chose this.

The doctor is hoping that he'll pass the stone on his own during the night, but he hasn't so far, soooo........looks like it will be the procedure. Micky says it's weird, because all of a sudden, he doesn't hurt at all. (he was hurting before, even with the morphine)

Okay, well I'm hanging out here by myself tonight, and the dogs and cat have taken full advantage. I came home to everything and anything dropped all over the floor!:D

thanks again, and still think good thoughts please, we aren't done yet!!

My best wishes, Andrea, for Micky and you both. I never had stones like that but know several who have, and they were painful. But all were resolved just fine, in fairly short order. My prayers are with him for tomorrow's procedures and a full and comfortable recovery.

I know the pain from this is nearly unbearable. My DH had one at Christmas a few years back. He has to limit his calcium intake now to prevent one from forming again.
