I'm not sure if I should use :( or  . I've been feeling both of them for a while now.
In the past few months, there have been a few murders (unsolved) here in Baton Rouge. All women...and not bad women (ie, prostitutes, drug dealers, etc). Two were in college and one was a wife/mother who owned her own antique shop. And they did not happen in "bad" areas of town, either.
Yesterday, the news said that three of the recent unsolved murders have all been linked to the same DNA. :( Which means...serial killer. :( Two of the three girls had their throat slashed, one strangled. In all three cases there was NO forced entry to their homes
I've been terrified b/c DH is away this week. I've had to stay at a friend's house at night b/c I tried to spend the night home alone once last week and completely freaked out!! I'm so scared!!
Yesterday, the UPS man came by and I didn't want to open the door...I was scared! Finally, after I saw his uniform, the truck, the package was the right size, called a friend to have someone on the phone w/ me, and grabbed a dog, I opened the door. I shouldn't have to do that!!
I AM SO ANGRY THAT SOMEONE IS MAKING ME AFRAID TO BE IN MY OWN HOME!! I just want to cry! :( It's so frustrating!!
Gun sales and alarm system sales around here have increased dramatically (especially gun sales to women), because of all of this! It's just crazy!!
DH will be back on Thursday and then we're leaving for WDW on Friday. I definately need a break!!
Sorry for such a long, sad post this early in the morning. It's just that the more scared I get, the more angry I get!
{{Hugs}} to you Des...I hope you aren't feeling as nervous as I am! And {{Hugs}} to any other Baton Rouge DISers.

Sometimes when you're scared, it's good to have anger, also. That anger will help keep you focused on protecting yourself. I'm sorry you're so nervous. {{hugs}} I hope they catch the murderer soon.
 I think this is the the face we all feel lately.
Our world has become a scary place sometimes, especially when we are alone.

As you have been telling me this over the past few days, Allison, it saddens me to hear it again, and the fear somebody like this evil person can instill in a community. Continued {hugs}, Allison, and a prayer for safety.
Less than 4 days and you guys will be in the magic. :) Try to think happy thoughts.
((hugs)) skuttle...hang in there & keep that door locked..:(
It is sad what this world is coming to these days..

That is so frightening. I've been scared to the point of leaving the house, too, so I know how angry you are. Just keep safe. (((hugs)))

I don't blame you for being frightened. Try to stay alert to all your surroundings and keep your eyes open.
What you are feeling seems normal to me. When I was 16 I had a gun pulled on me and I was so mad at the man that put the fear of death into me. Unfortunately, they never caught him but I HATED him and wished death upon him for doing that to me. I can't understand how a person could have that much hate in their heart to do the things they do to people. OK, now I am ranting.
Anyway, calm down and take a deep breath. It sounds as though you are doing everything possible to stay safe.
Think happy Disney thoughts.:Pinkbounc

Well...I just called my landlord. Our house has a security system installed, but we never got it activiated because we live in a safe neighborhood and it's $30 a month. Well...I called the landlord today to get her to activate the security system. *sigh* It's worth the extra money if it helps me sleep at night.

It does sound like it's going to be worth it. I haven't heard anything about the murders... I'll have to warn my friend who is moving there this weekend.
I would see it as a good sign that there are no signs of forced entry. That probably means the man "talked" his way into the homes. So that might give you a little more control over the situation... just don't trust anyone. :(

<font color=navy>Hugs, Skuttle....
I know what you mean. When I'm alone & get in my car in the evening, I check the back seat & area, and if I don't, I feel all creepy, and have to jump out of my car because of the fear I feel.
I was tempted to start letting my 13 yr old dd take the bus home after school when it starts in September, but there is a rapist loose in our area (5 rapes in the past two months, w/the latest being a 15 yr old yesterday), and the thought of someone hurting my baby, and me not being around ... scares me too much, so she'll have to just stay in daycare until I get her after work.

{{hugs}} to you Allison and to all who feel unsafe in their own homes! Glad to hear though that you are able to get that security system activated. I hope you all can stay safe!!!
Any interest in a dog?
Ours went balistic the other night, turns out a dunk teenager was stagering home and took a short cut throung our yard. Dog was inside up stairs and heard him through a window.
Some how I don't mind barky dog so much anymore.

Thanks again everyone. It's so nice to have ya'll to talk to. :)
Zurg: I already have two small dogs (see my sig :)). They do bark at every little noise, but I still don't feel safe w/ just them. I probably won't feel safe until the killer has been found.

Skuttle and Mary Jo, I am so sorry to hear that both your neighborhoods have such awful things going on right now. Please do everything to keep yourself and your family safe. Yes, even if that means holding the dog when getting your UPS package...trust me, I have known some great UPS guys and since they work the same areas, I am sure he understood.
I hope that they catch the killer soon in your area Skuttle and the rapist in Mary Jo's.
Skuttle,
Don't open the door to anyone!!!!!
I was at the University of Florida in 1990, when 5 students were murdered in their apartments within 3 days. Everyone was really freaked out, especially when the last person to be killed was a very big GUY! All I remember was news trucks everywhere and trying to,live a normal life in the midst of chaos and my male neighbors sleeping in my living room with a shotgun.
We ended up living with a family from our church for a few weeks and then for the next 8 months had a secruity guard at our complex. EVERY time we went into our apartment, he had to go in first - to check everywhere. Even under beds, in showers, etc. This was a nightmare. I can't even type the murderer's name.
I lost count of how many times we called the police about noises (shaking behind a locked door). Even had a police dog run through our house once before we went in. Just a nightmare!
Please be careful!

I am sorry you are faced with this challenge and at a time when your family support system isn't around. It is amazing how our lives become controlled by idiots that refuse to be controlled by anything.
Take care and focus your energy on preparing for your upcoming trip. :)

The last time I felt that way was when I was visiting realitives in LA during the Nightstalker killings. I was probably 10, 5'3 & weighed less than 120. Most of my relatives left the windows open (as is the norm in SoCal in the summer) & I had more than a couple restless nights that season.
I'm now 26, just short of 6 feet & well over 200lbs, so I'm not someone who really fears for my safety, but I remember that feeling.
I hope they do catch this sick person & you'll be able to sleep at night.

:) Thanks so much everyone. It really does mean a lot to me.
DH will be back TOMORROW!!! YAY!!! I can't wait!! I'll feel so much more relaxed when he's here.
I'll probably still be scared coming into the house alone...I've been carrying a large kitchen knife w/ me when I leave the house. I put it in my car and then when I come back into the house, I carry the knife and my cell phone with me while I check the closets, beds, etc. Not sure when I'll feel safe enough to just walk into my house w/o going through that. :( It probably won't be until the killer is caught.
The news said that the brother of the lastest murder victim will be on the Nachman show on MSNBC to give the murder national attention. Maybe this will make the cops try to speed things up a bit more. I'm sure the police are doing everything they can, but I guess it will never seem "good enough" until the murderer is caught.
I never used to check the local news station's website...but now I find myself checking it several times a day. *sigh*
