Which do you think is a better computer and why?
I'm looking for opinions, testimonials, whatever.

I'm not familiar with Dells, but my first computer was a Gateway, I had to replace it in less than a year. That's also what they use at work, and they've also just finished replacing 13 of them that they've had less than a year.

DELL!!!!!

After doing tech support at a university for many years I cannot say DELL enough!!! I have had numerous issues with Gateway's quality and tech support and even though they have gotten better over the last few years, I still won't ever suggest someone buy one. Go for the Dell :)

DELL!

My mother didn't listen to me and bought a Gateway because there is a Gateway store near her. She didn't want to wait to get her computer. Anyway, now she regrets it! She said that she wants a Dell now. Before having the Gateway a year she has had to take it back several times and have major work done on it.

Personally I don't like either but if it is between those two, go for the Dell. We use them at work and the IT people hate them, but they always say it could be worse..we could have Gateways!

Well, just to be the odd one out, we have had two Gateways and have been happy with both. Yes, we had trouble with the first, but it was fixed right away and I have always found their tech support to be good. On the other hand, my husband has a Dell laptop from work and he likes it. We took it on our last vacation and played DVDs for our DD and it was heaven sent. So what does that mean? Do my votes cancel each other out?;)

Dell. DelldellDell!

I had a friend who had a Gateway that is nothing but trouble. Several of my coworkers have Gateways that have been a lot of trouble.

On the other hand, I had a few friends with Dells that, as far as computers go, were essentially no trouble and I've had a Dell for about a year now and couldn't be happier. We also use Dells at work and they're great. I'll definitely buy Dell again, but won't touch Gateway unless I can't have a Dell.

For the $$, you are much better off building a pc than getting a brand name.
But out of the two, definitely get a Dell

Dude, you need to get a DELL!

I don't have one at home, but our school uses them and my DH company uses them and I really wish I could chunk my e-machine to get one but I don't have the money righ now.

A good friend of mine has a Gateway though and it's been a big pain in the rear. He had a part break on it and in order to fix it he had to order the part directly from Gateway because they didn't sell it in stores. They were gonna charge him $160 for a power supply!!! That's like more than half the cost of a new computer! So he's gonna try to get a Dell.

I don't know that much about computers - other than how to point and click! :p However, we have 3 computers at home (all HP's) and we just bought a laptop for our DD for college - a DELL!

Funny you should ask, we just ordered a Dell from their on-line site. We "built" it so to speak, to get the gizmos/gadgets we wanted. Got a lot of "upgrades" for free etc. Right now, they are offering free shipping on select models.

Glad to hear all of you who are happy with them. There is a web page that is loaded with Dell coupons to apply at their site.

Can't wait to get it.

DS #1 has a Gateway and DS #2 has a Dell and we do to. I would say Dell. The customer service is much better in my opinion.

I'm interested in getting a Dell too...

What is the best way to order it from them?

Do you call and order it that way then give them all your CC info over the phone?

Or do you order it online, is their website secure to put your CC info on it?

How long did it take to ship it to you?

Can't speak for others, but, we ordered on line. Set up an account with them to finance (will pay off when bill comes) and just picked what we wanted to customize it. They sent us a confirmation with all the info. You can then follow your order. Ours went in on 7/24, it goes to a production phase, then it is shipped. Our tentative ship is by 8/7. They will notify you by email when it goes out. Also, you can go into your account and see at what point it is at, i.e. preproduction, production, testing, shipping etc.

We'll see how it all goes! I do believe you can order via the telephone also. Go to Dell's website, it is pretty easy to navigate.

Hope this helps a little.

I currently have both a Dell and a Gateway in my house. My Gateway is 5-1/2 years old and we had a small problem (that was my DH's fault) in the beginning and had excellent customer service to get it fixed. Never had a problem with the computer since. Purchased our Dell about 9 months ago because I had one at work and liked it and I am very pleased with it. Had a problem with it when we first got it with not being able to connect to the Internet, had some good customer service moments and some bad, after they sent us a new hard drive and we changed Internet providers, problems were resolved. I like my Dell and I like my Gateway, I like my Dell better only because it is newer and faster.

I recently bought a new computer and considered both Dell and Gateway... I already had a Dell from 4 years ago and was pretty happy with the performance and service. I considered Gateway but really didn't like what they offered and their configuration. I ended up getting the Dell. Just love it! :)
