Is anyone watching?
K.D. Lang was incredible in the Opening Ceremony.
Canadians are incredible people. What a diverse and inclusive country.
The sadness of the young luger. What a terrible thing to happen at any time.
Netherlands wins the men's 5000 speed skating so far...

I very much enjoyed the opening ceremonies.... tomorrow or some point this upcoming week I'll try and head to the downtown core and snap some photos. Apparently it was a madhouse today at the cauldron according to some friends.
The sad death has been in our thoughts. The crash had happened a few minutes before a group of us left to walk to the end of the block to watch the flame run past; when we returned 15 - 20 minutes later the sad news was released that he passed away from the accident. It was definitely a bitter sweet moment.

I can only imagine the chaos there! Exciting, but not so great for those who actually live there and need to get on with daily life.
Will look forward to seeing your photos!

you know... there are some road closures and traffic's heavier == heck at about 3am last night we even noticed the heavier traffic but all in all unless you need to be right down town, in Whistler or the Richmond Oval area it's not all that bad. I have however taken the next 2 weeks off of work 'just in case' it was horrible :lmao: since my office is a block from the Athlete's village. The spirit in the city has grown tremendously since the Olympics have started, even my hubby is really getting into spirit ((we had to stop and buy a Canada Flag for his vehicle yesterday lol)) and we may try and buy some tickets as there are day of event tickets being released every day. Initially we didn't go into the lottery pool to get tickets as we didn't know if we'd full on leave town or not.
I'll definitely post some photos or a link to some photos once I get some -- so far the only official Olympic photos I have is me holding one of the torches bought by someone I know.
I have a theory about traffic though -- I want to go out on the main street when Canada is playing hockey and see how bad it is. ;) I guarantee you that will be the best time to go down town if you need to... :lmao:

You definitely should. I forget sometimes how beautiful it is as I get about my daily routine and how good we have it.
LOL OK I have to say a local Canadian reporter wanted to ask the US VP a question as he is wandering around Whistler -- he was willing to answer a quick question but his press secretary or whomever was seemed mighty ticked off that the VP agreed to talk and even more ticked off that the reporter and the VP were joking about Canadian Women's hockey -- JEEZ take a chill pill woman. Anyways that was off topic but was just shown on tv ;)

Didn't she?! ::yes::
The US VP was a hoot on the one newscast where he and his wife were being interviewed. They were both very excited to be at their first winter games, and she for her first visit to Cananda.
It was nice to see two pols, ok one, :teeth: being excited about something we can all relate to.

OP-If you can get tickets to any Olympic event you should go. My husband and I were in Beijing during the Summer games. I am not a big Summer Olympics fan, I much prefer the Winter games. That said, we came into some tickets and had a blast. We are considering a trip to Russia in 2014, and would gladly go to ANY other Olympics if we happened to be nearby.
Also I must add, I LOVE Quatchi. I had a friend mail me the 8 Canadian McDonalds toys of the mascots they are so cute. I loved the mascots in Beijing, but the Vancouver mascots are even better. :thumbsup2

Oh we were so routing for Bilodeau! There was a big expose about Bilodeau earlier in the day by Rick Hansen and since we saw his story ((he had been a hockey player but changed to skiing because his older brother could still participate when he was younger)). It was a brilliant move for him to make now that he has Gold. :) :thumbsup2 That kid certainly is an inspiration to all. And to see his brother stand the whole time cheering was amazing as well. In the expose they were explaining that doctors didn't think his brother would be able to stand and walk anymore but he is still doing both.:goodvibes:goodvibes

I went to Canada once years ago. It was so pretty. I don't suggest a native floridian go in the dead of winter for their first real winter. But it was the greatest experience.
What surprises me most are how young some of them are... Some of them are only 17yrs old. I'm guessing most of them are home schooled so they can train all the time, but how cool would it be to go back during your senior year of HS with a gold medal?

DVC OKW: Yes the crowd was singing the anthem. We were impressed that BC Place was was chock full for an awards ceremony :)
Sandra as for the cold -- it depends on where in Canada you go. Vancouver is rarely that cold. Last year it was colder in Orlando in Feb than it was up here.
jjjmranch -- the BC commercials: do you mean the ones with Fox, Nash, McCormick, McLaughlan? If so yeah, that's a pretty good commercial

I missed tonight's skating as we were downtown to check out the Olympic Cauldron, rings in the water and the street parties. :thumbsup2 The only bit of skating I saw was Patrick Chan in passing.
We're going to head back downtown maybe this weekend after they've adjusted the fencing around the flame. I'll try and get some images up in the next day or so.
Another gold for Canada today. YIPPY!

Not figure skating. Speed skating...
The Vancouver filmed episodes will air next week. I can't wait to watch. At yesterday's taping Buble was one of the guests and they sung the Canadian National Anthem words with the US Anthem music... LOL Buble was talking on the local news channel earlier today about it and said "I told Colbert --- you don't mess with anthems.. we are going to P*** people off in both countries." LOL
Anyways another gold for home -- YAY! Now am watching Woman's half pike while waiting for hockey to start.

Oh, I'm so glad that we have the Olympics at home this time. Remember Canadians, "We were made for this" haha :) Olympians are pretty interesting people. I know one woman whos in figure skating and she does go to university. She obviously took this semester off but... I don't know how these people do it. Not much of a social life with 4-6 hours of ice time a day. I have a hard time arranging my schedule if i have two hockey games in one day lol

You're welcome. I was going to check out the camera this morning but seems the hubby took it when he left this morning. I don't remember what photos he took last night.... I think we got the Omega clock counting down and the museum. We didn't get to look around as much as planned last night as we got side tracked at the Omega shop checking out watches. lol
As for the mitts; those are the hottest thing in the city -- good luck if you can find an Adult sized pair anywhere. I am glad Mom bought them for all the girls in the family back in October or November.
We were chatting with a couple from San Fran last night who sat next to us at dinner and they mentioned going into the Olympic Flagship store -- they waited nearly 2 hours to get inside! On the news this morning they mentioned the Robson Square zipline waiting time is 3-5 hours. That is insane. As cool as it is I'll pass if I need to wait that long. I heard the Vancouver Art Museum is free during the Olympics. I want to head over there too. Too much to do in far too little time. In the end I am glad we stayed home and didn't head to WDW or Hawaii as originally planned.
I think a trip to the Richmond O Zone will be next and we'll need to try and get into some of the Houses... we just keep on getting distracted with stuff and never get inside!

I have a funny story about curling. I was talking with an acquaintance about one of our cousins who was a curling champion in Quebec. The other person knew someone who was too!
We talked for about 20 minutes when I realized his version of curling and mine were two different sports! He was talking about WEIGHT lifting!
I like curling if only for the sense of antiquity of it. ::yes::

Curling is great. :) And as mentioned just earlier, far funner when you understand it.
As a side note to team spirit, the Olympics, sports and sportsmanship ((you can see it coming can't you...)) -- One of my nieces had a Banner hockey game (Completely undefeated all season) the other day and here's a conversation that took place walking back to the car between Niece 1 (in banner game) & Niece 2 (younger sister who is beyond talented playing with the boys 2 years older than her and often offering game play suggestions to her older sister lol ).
Niece one: "So what do you think about that?! We got the Banner."
Niece two: "Eh. It was a boring game --- but do you want to know the best part of it?"
Niece one: "Sure" as she shrugs off her sister's comments of a boring game.
Niece two: "That shot you took. Where you raised the puck and hit the girl in the head and she collapsed to the ice. That was the best part of the game."
Niece one: "Thanks. I'll take that as a complement."
:lmao::lmao::rotfl2::rotfl2:

wow what a great Ski Cross race. Congrats to all the medallists.... It's nice to see a local girl win a Gold medal.
OK a Whistler girl but still that's local enough. :) She did go to school here at UBC so I'll claim her. :cool1:
There was a expose on her yesterday and she talked about an essay she wrote at UBC and the essay was essentially a letter to the IOC telling them they should allow SkiCross to the Olympics and here she is a few years later in the first ever Ski Cross event and winning gold. There's foresight for you!
Tonight the eyes will be glued to both hockey and to figure skater Rochette whose mother had a heart attack and died here in Vancouver day before yesterday. Amazing that she is continuing on; but she is doing it for her mother and because being on the ice is where she probably feels the most freedom.

Just finished watching speed skating -- what a wonderful end of a career for Clara Hughes to get Bronze and her 6th Olympic medal in her last race ever. What an amazing career with multiple medals in both Summer and Winter Olympics. She won today at the age of 38! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2
She is being interviewed right now and so humble. She was asked by the interviewer if we could now call her, "Can we now consider you Canada's greatest athlete?." Did anybody see Rochette's skate last night? How emotional... she did so well and had such composure and grace in heartbreak. I hope she can win a medal in honour of her greatest supporter her Mother who passed away of a heart attack just a couple of days ago. There were so many tears in the stands, on the coaches, both her own and other coaches, who watched on, one of the view boxes was filled with other Canadian skaters there to support Rochette who were teary eyed and of course Rochette herself.
There has been word from her coaches that Rochette will address the media and the nation after the final skate is done and I am glad that the media has respected her wishes to leave her alone right now. I so hope she can for her family and herself win a medal to dedicate to her mother.
Today it was in the media that the two mogul medalists are each donating $25K to charities. Heil to a charity that aids women in poorer countries get an education and Bilodeau to Canadian Association of Paediatric Health Centres in support of research into cerebral palsy. Such class acts hearing stories like this is what warms my heart.
Good job to all the athletes who so generously give of their time, name and monies to charities.

Are we all watching woman's hockey now? :cool1: Cold medal game. I am switching between the woman's hockey and Canada vs Sweden in curling. I am not certain what is on the third channel. I love it we have 3 mainstream channels basically 24/7 Olympics. When it was CBC it was just 1 channel 24/7. With CTV having won the Olympic bid we get CTV and their subsidiaries . I have to say I am enjoying being not only the same city but the same time zone so I don't need to wake up at 3am to watch hockey games. :rotfl2:
Edit:
Wmn Hockey Standings -- Great job to all the girls!
Gold - Canada
Silver - USA
Bronze - Finland

And there we go....
Canada vs USA in the Gold Medal game -- this is the game all of Canada has been waiting for. Granted we thought we'd meet Russia in the final. The US team has played very well so it will be a tough game. I am looking forward to revenge ;) ;) ;)
Sunday noon Pacific. :banana::banana:

OK. Apollo got robbed. He touches, gets disqualified. Two others in the same race touch and don't? Not cool. Seriously way not cool.
He is a true sportsman though. Gave his opinion through a smile and moved on.
Bronze for the team. Good job. ::yes::
And did your heart go out to the German sisters? One wins the gold and the other falls. Heartbreaking sobs from the fallen sister. Bittersweet moment for the winner.

All of my Canadian friends, who we have summered with every year for 14 years, are out of their ever loving minds for hockey. I'm neutral at best, but we all will be watching the hockey game. Fun for me because of them, seems a bit more like life or death for them!!

It's part of the game... a Canadian was disqualified earlier for a much shorter touch and no fall resulted from it. win some and loose some. It sucks that it was in the medal race but alas he accepted it so I've accepted it.

definatly very cool opening. I love the fourh arm raising.
I'm so sad it's over though. I've enjoyed watching every minute of it. I always had one of the four stations on.
And I finally understand curling... and it was something me and my friend could talk about. Now we won't really have anything to talk about...

so which commercials are you going to miss and which ones are you hoping to never see again??
I like the P&G ones, all of them fairly cute.
The mcdonalds ones were nice.
The GE say "AAAA".
I'll be glad see the AT&T snowboard in space gone.
The sienna "there's a diaper bag on the roof" and "mommy's taking a time out"
and even though it's not that bad, subway one... Only cause i can't afford to eat it all the time, and it makes me crave it.
I'm sure there will still be a few played afterwards, but not like every commercial break as they were during the games.

I loved the closing ceremonies! They had a great tongue-in-cheek self-deprecating tone that made me smile. :happytv: Plus, I loved the fact that they gave the fourth torchbearer a chance to light the Olympic flame, since she didn't get a chance at the opening ceremonies.
And how can you not like a ceremony with huge inflatable moose?

LOL ya I took it as tongue and cheek and laughed though I've had some friends take serious offense. WHAT-EVA! :confused3
Anyways.... so sad this morning as I look out my window at work and see the Olympic Rings turned off. :( :(
And from my vantage point one lone German flag which I assume was forgotten... Poor thing.
BUT the Paralympics start next week. :dance3: Hubby and I going to try and get to the opening ceremonies if he can get off of work.

Hey, I wasn't online during the Olympics -- too busy watching them. I enjoyed reading this thread, though, since it brought them all back.
I'm not in the same time zone and find I'm still overtired from lack of sleep during the Olympics. But, they were awesome!
Do you know if CTV is planning to broadcast the Paraolympics?

My understanding is yes, CTV will be televising them which I think is awesome. The Olympic rings were taken down on Friday and the Paralympic crescents were put up. The flame is going through Victoria today.

Here's a couple photos from last night courtesy of the Vancouver Sun of Roberto Luongo (Team Canada's Men's Goalie) lighting a Paralympic Cauldron in Robson Square

It is my understanding that the official flame will be lit tonight on the waterfront same as the Olympics.
Here's the article the photos are from. I will give updates when I can on the Paralympics and will post my own photos as we try to get to events.

And I don't know what sort of televised events locations will get but here's the official Canadian Olympic / Paralympic tv channel site that will have updates on events/results of races, etc.

It was the opening ceremonies tonight; I only got to see part of it as I was at one of my nieces hockey tournament tonight but they had it on the TV in the sitting area of the rink. There was an amazing dance routine going on with one person who has limited leg strength and had crutches. he was doing AMAZING moves mid air balancing on the crutches.
I am hoping some video will be on youtube soon!
For those of you in Canada, or at least the Vancouver area they opening ceremonies is being replayed Saturday at 2pm on CTV.
