View Full Version : DirecTV: signal loss with rain?

Okay, DirecTV users: EVERYTIME it starts to rain we lose our signal! We've had the system for a couple of years. It used to just do this when we had a really HARD rain, but now it's EVERYTIME it rains. It stays off for awhile and then comes back on.

Anyone else? Do I have a problem? If so - what might that be? (I'd like to have some idea before I call a service person.)

We have exactly the same problem. Sometimes it's not even when it's raining, just really thick clouds.
It drives me nuts!!!!

Have you used the remote to check your signal strength? That happened to mine one time, and the dish had just gotten slightly loose.

Like Rexfan said, it could be that your dish needs re-adjusting. We have to re-adjust ours every couple of years or so. Hopefully it will be a simple fix for you!

mine does the same thing and it doesnt matter what the signal strength is, the only good thing is that it goes out about 3minutes before the down pour so it gives us time to close windows or put bikes away etc. it does usually come back on after it adjust itself too the rain, but boy does it stink if you rented one of there movies and it goes out, so if it looks like rain I stick in one of my own movies.:p

Hey Dodie, I had the same thing happen to me about an hour ago, then the downpour started. I was just 15 min from the end of a fairly predictable and sappy movie about a plane crash victim's mother and a fisherman. Why do I allow myself to get caught up in watching this silly drivel and wasting away my day? I thought it might have been a sign to turn off the tv and get on with the cleaning!

We have trouble with very hard rain and snow. You get the slow motion, break up warning, then its poof!

That's pretty normal for those small dishes. It's called rain fade and effects you more if your signal strength isn't that good to begin with.

No trouble thus far, and we have had some whopper storms lately.

It's happened to us a number of times. Usually it's only out for a few minutes. Just like others have said, it's just before the big downpour, then just before it ends, the picture returns. The irony is that during bad weather we want to watch the Weather Channel to see what's out there. Well, at some point the picture will go out, which puts us in a quandry. Then we just have to hope the local channels are doing weather coverage. Ahhh, the irony!!!

You also might want to clean the surface and/or check for tree branches, both which might by themselves cause loss, but coupled with the rain, cause it.

Ours seems to be worse during storms but a tree isn't helping matters any

When we first got our dish it took a major rain to slightly distort the picture..... NOw less rain, more distortion or complete wipe out. I suspect we need to realign our dish....

It drives me batty.

We have not had a problem with the rain except on one occasion.

Here is what we were told and it seems to work:

Spray your dish with PAM. It lets the rain and snow slide right off the dish. DO NOT spray the "eye", only the dish.

We were told to spray it in the spring and definately late fall so the snow slides off the dish.
