View Full Version : Category12GTY or 11 sideways cabin?

My DH, DD and I are booked on the Wonder Apr 25th sailing. I'm between the Category 12 GTY or paying an extra $120 for a sideways Cat 11 cabin - room number 6521. Need advice - I like the sideways cabin and I like deck 6, but is it worth the extra $120 or should I pick the 12GTY and hope for an upgrade? I say hope but I don't think, from what I have read, that they usually don't upgrade 3 people in a Cat 12 - seems like most upgrades are 4 people in Cat 12.

I've been "upgraded" 3 times (at least) with 2 or 3 people booked in a cat 12. The upgrades were to cat 11 or 10. Whether they upgrade people with fewer than 4 people booked in a cat 12 depends on how many cat 12s they have booked and how many other cabins they have open. You DO know for sure that you'll get at least an 11 if there are 4 of you booked in a 12.

Should you spend the $120? I wouldn't. 2 pieces of logic--what else could/would you use the money for? How much time will you spend in the cabin?

I've been in one of the sideways cabins--they are nice, but again, very little time in the cabin.

I can find a lot of other things to do for $120 rather than spend extra on essentially the same cabin turned differently. I'd wait and see what assignment I got from the Cat 12 gty and then consider whether or not to try to purchase an upgrade at the port if I wanted something else...or even look at whether the 11 was available after assignments came out.

$120 for a 4 day cruise, works out to $30 per day.

I would say most people upgraded on a CAT 12 GTY ended up on deck 1 or 2, is it worth $30 a day to know you will be on deck 6, or do you care?

I usually book CAT 12, but only if it is saving me more than $100 per day. I have ended up with a 2 great rooms and a terrible room.

My upgrades were to decks 5, 6, and 7. BUT I didn't get an upgrade to a cat 9, only to 10 and 11. If you get an upgrade it will be to wherever DCL has an unsold cabin. Yes, if you get a cat 9, it will be deck 1 or 2. But if you get an 11, it could be anywhere on the ship.

My personal rule of thumb is to book the least expensive cabin you would be happy sailing in.

If you get your room assignment and you end up in a Cat 12, will you be happy with that, or will you be disappointed because you were really hoping for an upgrade?

I'd probably pay the extra $120 to get the assigned cabin on deck 6, but I like that location. Plus, while I know the sideways cabins aren't any bigger, I definitely think they feel that way.

If it were me, I would save the $120 and take my chances - especially if you still have the option to upgrade later if you don't like your cabin assignment.

There were 2 of us in a cat. 12 on the Wonder in early December, and we were upgraded to a cat. 9 on deck 2. I would've been happy in the cat. 12 because I like saving money, but I was very happy to get the cat. 9.

We are sailing on the Wonder March 4th. I reserved a Cat12 and was upgraded to Cat 11 on Deck 6 and we are a family of 3 (two adults, 1 infant).
