Today I decided to crunch numbers because I may change my reservation and rent points from a coworker. If I did that I'd have to pay for the DDP OOP at arrival (we've done this before and it isn't a big deal). So I actually broke down the package into parts since I didn't bother to do that with my previously booked code. So I called Disney and James the phone guy said the Basic 2010 DDP is $47 for an adult and $13 for a child!! When did that happen? Well, obviously in 2010 but I'm astounded. I know the aged old (well we'll call 2005 aged for the case of the following argument) argument about is the DDP worth it and for us it has been a break even since using it in year one. Fits our life, fits our travel plans. But this year, I just don't know. Is anyone else as astounded? I'm sorry, I thought there was a recession and 10% unemployment, this is crazy.
Yeah, we ran the numbers and couldn't make it work this year either. We did settle for the QSDP though, paying for 5 TS OOP, and using those cs credits for breakfasts.

While there is valid reason for sticker shock, check the current menus and see that menu prices have risen the same amount or more since 2005. Also, if you are traveling during a busy time many buffets and character meals have a holiday surcharge of $4-8 dollars.
It is a lot of money, so you have to decide if it works for your or not. Don't judge solely on the increase of DDP price.

The price you were quoted of $47.00 is during an 'upcharge/surcharge' time period, so this is the highest amount you will pay. As mentioned above, if you pay OOP at any buffets, you will then be subject to an additonal $4.00/adult and $2.00/child per buffet meal as well.
So, you need to crunch the numbers as all DPs have changed since 2005.
Good luck, Tiger

The price of the Dining Plan has gone up, but so has the prices of the meals.(Have you seen the prices at Tutto?). We considered skipping the dining plan, but when we ran the numbers, the average price of a TS for our family of 4 was easily $100. 1900 Park Fare was about $140!. If you are planning on a TS each day, then the Dining Plan still may be the best *value*.

If you rent points, be advised that DVC members are not being quoted the seasonal increased price on the basic dining plan. According to Member Services and the DVC Member website, DVC prices regardless of time of year are $41.99 per night per adult and $11.99 per night per child.

Really? We're using a DVC member's points during Christmas (Dec. 18-27), and since all of our dates fall within the holiday surcharge period, we planned to suck it up and buy the DDP. I planned on paying the $47/$13 price, but if we are charged the lower price, that would be great.

I just decided to drop the DDP from my August13-22 vacation. Since my dates start in the peak dining season, I was paying 47 per night for me and DD(12). I asked her what she would order at the restaurants we are thinking of booking and added it all up, not even close to the amount I would be spending for her. We are going OOP and still going to all the places we want. I probably would not even have questioned the DDP this year if it hadn't been $47. Everyone should see if it makes sense for their own trip.

I just called for a trip at the end of June and was quoted a price of $41.99.
We also ran the numbers and have decided it is a good value - not great but good. I only wish the BDP came with a refillable mug like the QSP.

Good point about renting points - I forgot about that. I have 2 DVC reservations for 2010, and we are only being charged $41.99/adult and $11.99/child as you mentioned. Our DVC seasons are different than Disney, thus no upcharge - this is what MS told me the other day. Not sure if that's the reason, but at this time, no upcharge for us DVC members.

So if I understand this right, if I am on the DP for our spring break trip then I would not pay the surcharge for the meals? Only if I pay for those meals OOP?

You will only pay the actual surcharge for OOP, but if you go during the upcharge time, Disney adds that surcharge to the cost of the daily DP.
Hope this clarifies, Tiger

The "peak meal surcharge" applies only to buffets and all you can eat or fixed price restaurants - the ones where you are charged per person and not per item you order. You won't be expected to pay an extra surcharge in cash if you on the dining plan. But if you are on the basic dining plan and traveling in the 2010 dining plan peak seasons (February 12 - April 10; June 4 - August 14; and December 17-31) you will pay extra for the dining plan itself. During these periods the basic dining plan goes up about $5 per night per adult and $1 per night per child.
There is no peak upcharge for the quick service and deluxe dining plans, it applies only to the basic plan, and it does not apply to DVC points reservations at all.
If you have a spring break trip and you're on the basic dining plan with a package reservation, you're more than likely paying extra for it.
