Disneyland Altered Letter Swap: Postal back to you!

Here we go…

Groups will be listed in post #2, this post is for the instructions.

Dates:
1st Check-in: March 19th
2nd Check-in: April 2nd
DUE April 16th

Altered Letters:

Groups larger than 6 letters, will be 2 letters per person (if there is an odd length group, someone will make one letter and one similarly sized embellished shape/Cricut icon, etc.)

Letters should be matted and embellished at least once. Feel free to use cardstock or patterned paper.

Letters: max of 2" (meaning the size you select on the Cricut dial is 2", with a shadow, it will be taller, that's fine. SCAL users, may find they have to set it larger than 2" to have a letter that is in the 2" range. Use your best judgement.)

Height: If you wanted to put your letter on another shape, I think we have room to extend the height some. If you have a 2" letter and want to mount it on a 2.5" shape, that should be fine. Also, if you want to have a 2" shape, and only a 1.5" letter, that should work too. Use your best judgement, thinking about how your letter might look with everyone else’s.

Width: The tough one, because the fewer letters are in a word, the wider we can go. In general, take 24" divide by the number of letters in the word and subtract a little. So Disneyland is 10 letters...24/10 = 2.4" So you want the width to be in the 2.25" range, so we will have enough room to lay them out. If the topic is multiple words, you only need to worry about the longest word. IE. Space Mountain has 13 letters, but we could put “Space” at the top of the layout, “Mountain” at the bottom, so just don’t make a letter that is wider than 4” (24”/8 letters)

Regular Element Groups:

Groups will be 6 people.
Make 2 elements per group
Pick your topic, but don’t duplicate a topic already chosen .

Element list – Standard list and standard rules apply. I’ve listed the most common, but if there is something else you want to make, just ask.

Title: Double matted and embellished. Standard 2x8 (other sizes okay too), welded, shadowed letters, paper pieced, letters on shapes, etc.
Pair of borders: Double matted and embellished ~2” in width
Paper Piecing (not a layered die cut): Handmade or Cricut. These are like the licensed characters on Cricut, with many pieces.
Library Pocket w/ Tag: Tag should be double matted, with eyelet or ribbon/fiber. Embellished.
Shaker Box: Embellished, be creative
License Plate: Double matted, embellished
Layered Die cuts: Three 3” shapes, with shadow. These are like the ZooBalloo or Animal Kingdom animals.
Lyric/Quote: 3 paper layers, embellished. Minimum 3x4.
Matchbook: Include paper inside for journaling. Embellished, be creative.

Mix & Match elements (select 2 from this list = 1 element):

Photo Mat: Double matted, embellished. Sized to fit a 4x6 photo, so 4.25x6.25 for top layer.
Frame: Sizzix dies okay, otherwise same rules as for photo mat
Journal Box: 3 paper layers, embellished, 3x3 space for writing
Tag: 2 x 3 double matted, embellished. Tag or ribbon/fiber in hole
TWO Embellished Shapes: double matted, embellished can me squares, circles, flowers, diamonds, etc.
Slide Mount: Embellished, be creative.
File Folder: Embellished, be creative.

Embellishment Suggestions: Die cuts, stickers, stickles, flock, ink, chalk, brads, charms, flowers, eyelets, ribbon/fiber, sewing, tearing, embossing, stamping, clipart, additional layers of paper beyond double mats (if it would look weird trying to fit in another embellishment), specialty paper (such as embossed, glitter, Bling).

Packaging:
Place your elements in a bag large enough to completely hold them and be closed. If you have a long title, saran wrap is a great alternative. Label with your name, DISname and Group.

Element groups: Place all your bags, in a GALLON sized bag (or larger if needed). Label with your name, DISname and Group.

Altered Letter Groups: You may put these in a smaller bag. Label with your name, DISname and Group.

Mailing & Postage:
You may ship to me by any method, but if you mail APRIL 12TH OR LATER , you must send with Delivery Confirmation and send the number to me. I prefer to send back to you with flat rate postage. The rates are: Envelope or Small Box (9”x6”x2”) - $4.95, Medium/Standard box – $10.70, Large - $14.50. Delivery Confirmation is an additional $.70, please include a DC slip if you want DC. Do not send Clik-it-ship it postage. Cash, check, stamps are fine.

Sorry to take so long to get back to this topic. I've been working on a gift album, and not paying as much attention to all the boards as I should.

How cool is it that you need elements to use with Walt's Apartment! I haven't been lucky enough to get up there, but I think they added it to one of the tours since I have been to DL last. I don't think Walt's Apartment would work as an altered letter group, because I'm not sure how many people have been up there. But what would work, is that you wanted to sign up for a "General Main Street" topic and then make something reminiscent of a Victorian parlor, but not something that specifically says Walt's Apartment?

Or if others chime in that they could use Walt's Apartment elements, we could do a small group. On that note, I do have Club 33 pictures to scrap. Does anyone else? We could also do a small group for that, and each person make one element.

I have the start of the groups ready, and I will be adding those to post 2. If there is something you don't see that you want, just let me know. I'll be working on the instructions next, but they are pretty much your basic instructions.

I wanted to point out, that some of the words have odd number of letters. For example Space Mountain is 13 letters. So for groups with those odd numbers, one person will make one letter PLUS an embellished shape/cricut icon. So for Space Mountain, you could make a star, Saturn, etc. This should be sized to be about the same size as a letter, so it could be used as part of the title. The odd number letter groups are marked with a **.

Oh, I haven't be up there! I wish! But I was just thinking if people have posed for photos right outside his apartment at the firehouse, I just thought that would be a cool idea. :) Especially since you could easily do something with the light in his window that is always on as an embellishment or something. I am just not sure how many people think to get a picture there (either posed with family or just the fire house all alone). Does anyone have anything like that? I think it would be cool to dedicate a little something to Walt in a scrapbook, using memorable quote to start off your book (or end it!). I only suggested it because I saw a post about it on the Disney Parks blog! :rotfl: If there is not enough interest, I am cool with that. ;)

1. For the altered letter groups in which we have two letters -- can our letters match, or would you prefer that the letters use all different papers and embellishments?

2. Are you limiting the number of groups? I have 12 letter groups I would like.

They can match or be different. I plan on doing some matching, some not. Kind of depends on what letters I get. If I two next to each other, I probably would go to different. If the letters are separated, I may go matching.

I have no kids, pets, or job, and I have multiple rooms I can fill with boxes...:lmao: So I can handle opening as many groups as we can fill. If you think you can handle 15 groups and be done on time, go for it.

The only thing is, if we end up with partial groups at the end, we can see about either fitting people into existing groups (so a couple people will only make 1 or they could do 1+embellished shape) or maybe in that group, people make 3 letters. We'll see where things end up and if that shuffling is even necessary.

So since I am not in the MK Swap, I haven't done these Altered Letters before. So I went ahead and did my prototypes for the 2 groups that are already done. I can see how much fun these will be.

Yeah, I realized that while I was making these..."what I really need to do is work on the ones still with open spots." I am annoyed, because I have some ideas using Blackletter. Which when I looked at FedEX tracking yesterday, said it was going to come today. Now today, it says Tuesday! So that took me right out of the creative mood.

Yes, almost all of it. Except the T in Frontierland, that is from the Pooh font. It's a nice cart, lots of useful stuff on the icon feature.

I know, shadows for some of those would be nice. Although, for this swap if you put it on something, or two layers of something, even though the rules say shadowed, it would be okay. If you look at my Big Thunder "T"...there is no shadow. Some of the things would be great to use, but I don't want people to start thinking, "There is no shadow, I can't use it." As always, "Do you love it, and think others would too?" If a yes, your good.

It can, if there is also an embellishment in some way. Let's say you have a letter with a shadow, on a horse...in that case the horse would be the "embellishment." Or you could have a letter, on a horse, and maybe the letter has a cowboy hat. The horse would be the shadow, and the hat the embellishment. But you can't have just one unshadowed letter, and one unshadowed horse. In other words, the horse can't be both the shadow and the embellishment. Does that make sense?

For these, nothing is welded. I just positioned stuff, so I could see how it looked together. When I make them, I will just be cutting everything individually (not using CDS).

2 of those groups affect me - For New Orleans Square, it seems there are way too many extra letters to fill in either through the swap or on my own at home. What if instead of dropping it, since there are 3 of us we just do N, O, and S?

I think I have everyone's latest selections. For the Small World, group I had stuck a D by my name, while you can see by the image, I was planning on making a A, so that was easy to figure out.

mycutiepatooties, DiT asked for Jungle Cruise & Small World first, so I put her down in those groups.

With those last signups we are down to 3 open groups: Main Street USA, Critter Country and Matterhorn. Tinkryansmom, had said that she would be willing to do more, so I am awaiting her PM back. I know two of those groups are hard for WDWers to pick up.

1. Fill Matterhorn
2. Get one more person for MS: USA. If we do, I will drop the icon and I'll do the last letter.

Tomorrowland: I made a space mountain for behind the "T". The "T" is pop dotted and has a metallic silver paper shadow. The "A" has a Buzz laser on it. Does it look like a laser? I printed a coloring page from the internet and reduced it a bunch on the copier then cut out just the laser blaster and copied it onto acid free cardstock and colored the laser with scrapbook markers.
What do you think?? Okay??

Susan, your letters can be arranged apart enough from Traci's that I think it would be okay for you to use the same paper. A way to make the letters more matching. But I'm not sure anyone else should use the same paper, without everyone using the same paper.

Alrighty, here is my first prototype for Group B - Disneyland. Let me start off by saying the lighting sucks in my room. The paper is actually a yellowy gold, not an icky greeny gold. ;) And the ribbon will be pink as well (like the thread in the picture), I just have to purchase it.

I modeled it off of the big, golden book in the beginning of the movie (which I watched today!). ;) And I know... I technically signed up for Sleeping Beauty's Castle, but I could not pass up this idea! So the next embellishment will be the castle, I swear. :) Or just throw some castle pics into it, that'll work too!

So here we go! It is a mini-book... the inside pages are 2x3 inches. I left them blank, so journaling may be added or some smaller pictures. The edges are inked and the golden rectangle is embossed. I was going to write "Sleeping Beauty" in instead of the silhouette, but I think I like this better. Or maybe I still can add it, "Sleeping" above and "Beauty" below Aurora.

Here's my T & E for Main Street. I was going to do a wheelbarrow of flowers with the E, but it just wouldn't look right. I was then going to put multiple flowers on the E, but it was just too much. It just looked better simple.

Also, the paper for the E isn't just a solid cream color likes it looks in the picture. There's also a blue stripe there, it's just not showing well.

For groups in which we have 2 letters, do you want each letter in its own bag, or can both letters go in one bag?

And, for the letter groups, for the larger outer bag, is quart size sufficient or do you prefer gallon?

Both letters (or 3 for the Critter Country Group) in the same bag.

You can use as small of a bag that will hold all your little bags. I plan on using jewelry size bags/snack size for my letters, and those would even all fit in a sandwich bag.

And that lamppost letter is fabulous!

Yep. Just think of it as a two element swap. Letter #1 = first element, Letter #2 = second element. Both elements go in the same bag. Then all the smaller bag go in another bag marked with your group number.

It's important to double bag, because I don't have a covered porch. If it rains, and I'm not aware a box is outside, or I am running errands, the swap pieces will be protected, even if the outer box gets a bit soggy.

We love the Matterhorn. When Banana was little she was afraid of the sounds coming out of it and so I turned it into a game that "Henry" was just saying hi to everyone as they rode and walked past. I used Distressed Stickles on the A -- it reacted weird wtth the flash, you really can't see the glitter in person. This is the first time I've used distressed stickles...not sure if I like them.
