View Full Version : River Country update
DisCamper
02-05-2010, 04:25 PM
As we posted months ago, there was a geological survey team doing their thing around River Country. About two and a half weeks ago, a second fence went up in front of the first fence closer to the entrance. It had signs all over it saying 'hard hat area'. Couple days later heavy equipment started moving in. River Country has historically been very well lit at night but for the past week it has been completely dark. I wonder if this means they are tearing it down?

they've got several pieces of heavy equipment back there going. And lots of security. As i was walking back there was an older couple headed there too. Well as they were walking back past the ticket booth, a security guy in a car stopped them and talked to them for a while. I was still at the pavillion, and kinda hid until the guy left. I was scared of getting talked to. He drove on the dirt path between trails end and the pavillion and on into a gated area and i made my escape.
But i did snap a picture of them tearing down the building with the bathrooms, they had part of the original fence open, but i couldn't see past it.
on the boat ride, there were a couple pieces on the far shore of the lake, so it was hidden by the trees until you were past it. They also have a fence up around pool area, dividing it from the lake. There's still everything it the lake, as far as i can tell. I haven't found any one to talk to yet though.

Shouldn't there be a plan on file somewhere?
I have read posts on this board where they list all the permits that WDW files with whatever planning commission.
It seems that whenever they do anything they have file a plan. I swore I read one that said something like
[silly mode on]
Plan to pick a paint chip to repaint the bathrooms.
[silly mode off]
so why haven't we seen these plans for what is major construction. :confused3
BradyBz12

maybe they don't need permits to just bulldoze/fill in the place, since they're not actually "building" anything or changing anything re: electrical, plumbing, etc. (lots of permits posted for that kind of stuff) :confused3

I thought I read a thread not too long ago (I think Carol posted it maybe) about renovations at the fort. It was very vague and nondescriptive. Maybe this is falling under that plan and the vagueness was to keep some big secret of some sort. I think we were all presuming it was altering the trading posts or something to that affect. I will see if I can find that thread.

the fence in front is the new fence. The building they're taking down, is the old cast office and the bathrooms. They seem to only be demolishing half of it, not the whole thing.
And on the right side, just above the front fence is the original fence that was placed around it. Just off to the side of the pic, is where they opened up the original fence.
There were like a half dozen people working back there, so I didn't want any one to come over to me.

Something is definitely up (obviously.) Its a matter of looking in the right spot to find where the permits are hiding.
Anytime someone does anytype of construction or demolition on Disney Property or anywhere else, there needs to be a permit pulled, detailing the who what where when and why.Its for a few reasons.
1 is taxable value.Anytime something gets built or demod, it changes the taxable value of the land.
2 is legality. When demoing,or building if something happend, the powers that be want to know who to send the lawyers after.
3 Safety, from a public safety standpoint, for example, when Walmart bought and remodeled a supermarket next to an exisiting store, near where I work, they took down a few walls, and rearranged the fire protection system more than once. They had to provide in detail in the demo and rebuild phase, exactly what they were doing, when and how they were doing it, as well as how long and where the temp standpipes and risers were, and how long they were going to be there.

I think what is most intriguing about this story has been the timing. First, just before the holidays, TCD does one of his best undercover investigative photo journals that is so interesting that it spills over into the main stream media. Then we mysteriously stop hearing from him in mid December. He does see some Fort Fiends and mentions he will be very busy and may not be posting for a while. Again sort of out of character from someone who seemed to visit several times a year and was able to uncover secrets on every trip. Now all of a sudden we have activity in River Country which has had nothing of substance going on since it closed some 10 years ago. My question to all of you is "are these pieces of the RC puzzle unrelated"? :confused3 I vote NO. Stay tuned. Where is Geraldo Rivera when you need him? ;)

I wonder why no one at Disney has thought to call this demolition land, they can charge the standard one day admission price. You get to operate heavy equipment, knock down buildings, dig big holes, bury stuff. pour asphalt and concrete, and then they can open construction land..... I know my kids would beg to go :rotfl2:

They arn't their own city though, from the Wikipedia page
The RCID includes the cities of Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista
What I was referring to was there is someone on these boards who looks up the plans that Disney still has to file with the local government. The last ones I remember seemed very basic like rearranging some trailers at FW.
My post about having to file a plan to pick a paint color was in jest, but it seems like anything that involves earth moving equipment should have a plan.

Wow, looked at the pictures. Fascinating, but I don't think there's any mystery behind TCD's disappearance. I'm assuming since the photos went public there is a cease and desist and the threat of prosecution for trespassing. Seems like there were numerous opportunities for TCD to get seriously injured and I'm sure Disney wants to make sure others don't take it upon themselves to do the same.

Yes, if you go to Mouseplanet.com and see their weekly update, they do search and post construction permits filings. However, the timeframe when the permit is applied for, filed, and actually posted on web varies greatly. Some of the more minor work is done and completed before it even shows up on mouseplanet. I would imagine that in the next few weeks, we'll see what the construction permit is about. However, let me note, that I read through over a year of construction permits notices before the updates began at Fort Wilderness, and nothing was mentioned except the expansion of 600 and the pool. So apparently, adding asphalt to existing sites doesn't count.

Speaking for myself, if a Cease and Desist landed on my doorstep the threats from Disney would be the least of my worries... it would be the threats from my wife that would force me off the boards! I would be pretty surprised if all of this traced back to him though, as he is very cautious about his real identity... almost as much as FtWildernessGuy is about his occupation! Unless of course he was caught on the grounds. Hopefully the reports of him expecting to be real busy are all that's behind his absence.

Maybe that's what the Disney Imagineers are up to.....creating "Lost Land" outta the old RC?? That's the place you can take family members that are irritating you...send them in....and a character representing "Ben" will banish them to "the island".....never to be seen or heard from again! I agree with Donnie I think TCD finished off River Country but its not his fault. Disney needs to clean up its own mess. I would rather them rebuilt it but it needed to be cleaned up. Maybe they can put in a counter service for us or a golf cart trail to the lodge there.

Dought it due to the fact that it has no parking lot so it makes it hard for people to get to from other resorts. But I wish they would due somthing cool with it and not just demo it and fence it off.

Oh dear Lord!!! TCD's pictures had absolutely nothing to do with the demo going on at RC. There were other websites that had similar pictures long before the ones that TCD posted. As to where TCD is...he likes to keep a low profile and in all probability lurks now and again, but has nothing of interest to post.
My guess on the R.C. demo is this....
R.C. was slated for demo long before now, but 3 hurricanes in 2004 forced Disney to use the money slated for the R.C. demo to the clean-up and restoration of the Fort. (Disney is self-insured, so no insurance $$$). Then, the remodeling/upgrade project (that was scheduled well in advance of it actually occurring) was done. Now that everything else is out of the way, the R.C. demo is happening.
Actually, I hope they turn the area into a food court and make Trail's End a full service restaurant.

But in all seriousness, I do think you are right. I hope he returns at some point, as I really enjoy his posts, photos and reports. But, and this is sometimes hard to remember, there IS more to life than the Fort and the DISboards, and I bet he's exploring other things and enjoying other campgrounds. I would hope they might put the third pool they have talked about for years, maybe something cool. And since I cant ride my skateboard anymore maybe they could put a skate park in for us old farts and the kids away from everyone.
Lots of ideas just hope they do something for US.

I found my old pictures of RC and will post them as soon as I find someone who still has a scanner. They are from the late 70's and early 80's

If Cheryle didn't drop her brand new camera we would have some great pics. I can tell you this all most all the trucks coming and going have magnetic signs that say River Country Project. The survey team started surveying about a mounth or two before TCD posted his pics so we can't blame him.

I saw TCD NYE and to my knowledge he wasn't in trouble. This was his biggest mission yet and I think he's just resting up for a new adventure. It will be sad to see RC bulldozed but like the train, produce truck and other things it's time is over and it's a breeding ground for snakes and mosquitoes.

Fact is stranger than fiction, Frank. In 1981 after 2-3 years of work to build I-75 from Tampa to Naples, a film company came to Sarasota & the State of Florida DOT asking if they could remove a newly built overpass in east Sarasota. In its place they would build an identical prop, blow it up, clean up the mess, and replace the original overpass. It brought lots of $$$ to Sarasota - so wish granted!
In 1981 a farming area of Sarasota near the interstate was painted PINK and a movie town was born. In the summer of 1981, the overpass was blown up by dynamite in a scene from the movie. Our home at the time was close enough to be awakened at 1:00am from the blast.
The name of the movie? Honky Tonk Freeway. We suffered with that "Pink Town" for years, cause the farmers thought it brought a lot of business their way. Maybe it did??

What will they do if I kayak over to Discovery Island?
I have rented a pontoon boat during a couple of visits to the Fort and can tell you the CMs that run around in the Boston Whaler patrol boats keep a sharp eye on RC and DI. On one excursion I wanted to get close to RC and see it from Bay Lake. I stopped with my binoculars. In no time a nice Bay Watch babe type CM raced over to have a chat. She didn't chase me off but did ask if I was OK. She claimed she thought I had broken down or something. I said no that I was just catching some rays. She didn't leave until I put it in gear and left. Her motives could have been sincere but I got the unspoken message "STAY AWAY!". Another year I undertook a similar curiousity seeking trip to Discovery Island. I pulled up close to the dock on the east side and in a flash I saw that familiar Whaler kicking up a rooster tail headed my way. This time it was a guy who pointed out I had violated the off limits area.
Unless you swim across in the cover of darkness, like the guy whose site was posted in another thread, I don't see a way to get to DI. Plus its got to be a dangerous trip. Gators? Bacteria? SNAKES! Who knows what else might be there to injure or kill you.
By the way TCD is my hero. I like his style. I tend to push the rules too. Like taking my golf cart down the broken down nature trail and nearly getting stuck! I had a heck of a time backing all the way out! WHEW! I was lucky nobody caught us that day. But it was cool to have explored something very few have seen or even know about at the Fort.

Last month while staying at the Fort, we took the Segway tour and we were told that yes they are tearing down the old water park and they have plans to extend the campgrounds.
Since Disney sold the huge piece of property at the end of Bonnet Creek Pkwy, the campgrounds can't extend that direction so they have to extend towards Wilderness Lodge through the old water park.
Course, anything you "hear" is a rumor so take what you like of that.

Now you are just making too much sense Debbie. :teacher: Go have a couple of Kungalooshes and come back when you aren't going to make any sense. LOL :rotfl:
I am wondering if maybe TCD has rejoined under another screen name so as not to be found out. Hmmmm, any thoughts on that on Miss gotta make sense of stuff? LOL :hippie:

This weekend while sitting in the hot tub at FW. A woman said the lifeguard at the pool told her that Disney was looking into tearing down the old River Country area and making more premium sites along the lakefront. What do you think? This this will happen?
I hope not- I thought it was pretty crowded this weekend almost every site was full and they turned over very fast. One hour they were empty the next someone had moved in. I think they already have the right balance of cabins and campsites.

It would be nice if they were able to keep the other pool at RC though. The two pools at FW tend to get filled up quickly and it would be a great spot, being near the lake and all.

It was basically just about people meeting Santa at Epcot and being embarassed because their kids would stop and stare or run over to him. It was pretty funny. I immediately thought of you after I read your TR since you spent so much time at Epcot. They were just wondering who you are. Someone later mentioned that maybe it was somebody from the camping board who looks like Santa(I'd already thought that before then :))

These notes were in Mouseplanet this week.
River Country – removal/demolition of the Nature Walk Boardwalk.
Fort Wilderness Resort Pioneer Hall – completion of the rehab.
I'm wondering if the demo up front is the 2nd item.
If you'll remember, when the massive rehab was announced in 08, they mentioned that "River Country" belonged to attractions and would not be part of the rehab.
I'm wondering if "attractions" released the buildings that were placed in front of the walls (the pavilion, the bath house, etc.,) that those building became part of the "Pioneer Hall"

I allways loved the walkway and the gazebo as well as the view of RC from the launch to MK it was an icon and gave me a sence of Disney past. Like the old condemed building down the road even if you were never in the building your imagination still runs wild of all the things that may have went on there.
But in the end this is progress just think of all neat old things that had to go to make way for the ones we love and some day even thoes will wave to step aside for something new and better.

Actually Todd, the hurricanes had nothing to do with the "shoe tree" being stripped of their shoes. I'm assuming a Disney "suit" thought it was an "eye-sore" and ordered the tree cleaned out. The shoes were there until sometime in 2008.

It's probably CPs or any one that's leaving water craft that tosses them there.
The Rivers of America are full of boots, a few tillers, a microwave, wheel barrel, a stroller, alligators here and there. Occasionally a shoe will float to the top and it's removed. But until they drain it, it's all sitting down there.

Some of the people in the office at Ft Wilderness have confimed that River Country is being demolished as we speak to make way for more ($) sites. I don't think our new Resort General Manager has any emotional attachment to it like those of us who vacationed there with our families. I have always viewed River Country as the "Cinderella's Castle" of Ft Wilderness. Some places are just too special to be bulldozed; and River Country is one of them. How about a protest?

Quite honestly, I'd much rather it be bulldozed than left the way it was. No way they're going to refurbish it, so might as well do something useful with the area.

Then I plan to walk back and see how far I can get into RC. I am no TCD, but I will do my best. In fact, who knows, maybe TCD or someone will get us some photos before I make it?????
Thanks so much. We will be anxiously awaiting any news! popcorn::

I don't know if it was posted on here but Mouse Planet posted in thier permits applied for that WDW applied to remove the water side board walk at River Country. Sorry I just got back from the Fort and hadn't read the whole thread yet,now I see that CLKelly already posted this.
